Structure and superconductivity of two different phases of Re3W

Two superconducting phases of Re3W have been found with different physical properties. One phase crystallizes in a non-centrosymmetric cubic (alpha-Mn) structure and has a superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of 7.8 K. The other phase has a hexagonal centrosymmetric structure and is superconducting with a Tc of 9.4 K. Switching between the two phases is possible by annealing the sample or remelting it. The properties of both phases of Re3W have been characterized by powder neutron diffraction, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. The temperature dependence of the lower and the upper critical fields have been measured for both phases. These are used to determine the penetration depths and the coherence lengths for these systems.

Crossover from paramagnetic compressed flux regime to diamagnetic pinned vortex lattice in a single crystal of cubic Ca(3)Rh(4)Sn(13)

We report the observation of positive magnetization on field cooling (PMFC) in low applied magnetic fields (H < 100 Oe) in a single crystal of Ca(3)Rh(4)Sn(13) near its superconducting transition temperature (T(c) approx 8.35 K). For 30 Oe < H < 100 Oe, the PMFC response crosses over to a diamagnetic response as the temperature is lowered below 8 K. For 100 Oe < H < 300 Oe, the diamagnetic response undergoes an unexpected reversal in its field dependence above a characteristic temperature (designated as T*(VL) = 7.9 K), where the field-cooled cool-down magnetization curves intersect. The in-phase and out-of-phase ac susceptibility data confirm the change in the superconducting state across T*(VL). We ascribe the PMFC response to a compression of magnetic flux caused by the nucleation of superconductivity at the surface of the sample. In very low fields (H < 20 Oe), the PMFC response has an interesting oscillatory behaviour which persists up to about 7 K. The oscillatory nature underlines the interplay between competing responses contributing to the magnetization signal in PMFC regime. We believe that the (i) counterintuitive field dependence of the diamagnetic response for H > 100 Oe and above T*(VL) (lasting up to T(c), (ii) the oscillatory character in PMFC response at low fields and (iii) the PMFC peaks near 8.2 K in 30 Oe <= H <= 100 Oe provide support in favour of a theoretical scenario based on the Ginzburg-Landau equations. The scenario predicts the possibility of complex magnetic fluctuations associated with transformation between different metastable giant vortex states prior to transforming into the conventional vortex state as the sample is cooled below T*(VL).

Two-gap superconductivity in Lu$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$: a transverse-field muon spin rotation study

The superconducting properties of Lu2Fe3Si5 with Tc = 6.1 K have been investigated using low-temperature transverse-field muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and specific heat measurements. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature is 353(1) nm. However, the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth is consistent with a two gap s+s-wave model. Low-temperature specific heat measurements on the same sample also show evidence of two distinct superconducting gaps.

Small-angle neutron scattering study of the vortex lattice in superconducting LuNi2B2C

We present studies of the magnetic field distribution around the vortices in LuNi2B2C. Small-angle neutron scattering measurements of the vortex lattice (VL) in this material were extended to unprecedentedly large values of the scattering vector q, obtained both by using high magnetic fields to decrease the VL spacing and by using higher order reflections. A square VL, oriented with the nearest neighbor direction along the crystalline [110] direction, was observed up to the highest measured field. The first-order VL form factor, |F(q10)|, was found to decrease exponentially with increasing magnetic field. Measurements of the higher order form factors, |F(qhk)|, reveal a significant in-plane anisotropy and also allow for a real-space reconstruction of the VL field distribution.

Intraplanar Magnetic Excitations in Na0.5CoO2: An Inelastic Neutron Study

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements mapping the in-plane magnetic interactions of Na0.5CoO2 reveal dispersive excitations at points above an energy gap Eg = 11.5(5) meV at the superstructural Bragg reflections. The excitations are highly damped, broadening with increasing energy, and disappear at hw ~ 35 meV, a strong indication that the magnetism is itinerant. Tilting into the ac plane reduces the value of Eg by 25%, suggesting that the dispersion along c is significant and the magnetic correlations are three-dimensional, as seen at the higher doping levels.

The magnetic field and pressure dependence of the magnetic ordering transition in NaxCoO2 (0.6<x<0.72)

We have measured the magnetic field (H<90 kOe) and pressure (P<10 kbar) dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature, Tmag, in single crystal samples of NaxCoO2 for a range of Na concentrations (0.60<x<0.72). We show that in zero field, Tmag remains constant with decreasing x before magnetic order disappears at x=0.65. Heat capacity and magnetization data show that for x=0.70, Tmag is unchanged in an applied field. In contrast, magnetization data collected under hydrostatic pressure show that Tmag increases from 22.0 K at 1 bar to 25.4 K at 10 kbar. This rise is at odds with the behaviour expected for model spin density wave systems.

The effect of externally applied pressure on the magnetic behavior of Cu2Te2O5(BrxCl{1-x})2

The effect of externally applied pressure on the magnetic behavior of Cu2Te2O5(BrxCl{1-x})2 with x = 0, 0.73 and 1, is investigated by a combination of magnetic susceptibility, neutron diffraction and neutron inelastic scattering measurements. The magnetic transition temperatures of the x = 0 and 0.73 compositions are observed to increase linearly with increasing pressure at a rate of 0.23(2) K/kbar and 0.04(1) K/kbar respectively. However, the bromide shows contrasting behavior with a large suppression of the transition temperature under pressure, at a rate of -0.95(9) K/kbar. In neutron inelastic scattering measurements of Cu2Te2O5Br2 under pressure only a small change to the ambient pressure magnetic excitations were observed. A peak in the density of states was seen to shift from ~5 meV in ambient pressure to ~6 meV under an applied pressure of 11.3 kbar, which was associated with an increase in the overall magnetic coupling strength.

Critical points in the Bragg glass phase of a weakly pinned crystal of Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$

New experimental data are presented on the scan rate dependence of the magnetization hysteresis width $ΔM(H)$ ($\propto$ critical current density $J_c(H)$) in isothermal $M-H$ scans in a weakly pinned single crystal of Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, which displays second magnetization peak (SMP) anomaly as distinct from the peak effect (PE). We observe an interesting modulation in the field dependence of a parameter which purports to measure the dynamical annealing of the disordered bundles of vortices injected through the sample edges towards the destined equilibrium vortex state at a given $H$. These data, in conjunction with the earlier observations made while studying the thermomagnetic history dependence in $J_c(H)$ in the tracing of the minor hysteresis loops, imply that the partially disordered state heals towards the more ordered state between the peak field of the SMP anomaly and the onset field of the PE. The vortex phase diagram in the given crystal of Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ has been updated in the context of the notion of the phase coexistence of the ordered and disordered regions between the onset field of the SMP anomaly and the spinodal line located just prior to the irreversibility line. A multi-critical point and a critical point in the ($H,T$) region of the Bragg glass phase have been marked in this phase diagram and the observed behaviour is discussed in the light of recent data on multi-critical point in the vortex phase diagram in a single crystal of Nb.

Neutron inelastic scattering investigation of the magnetic excitations in Cu_2Te_2O_5X_2 (X=Br, Cl)

Neutron inelastic scattering investigations have been performed on the spin tetrahedral system Cu_2Te_2O_5X_2 (X = Cl, Br). We report the observation of magnetic excitations with a dispersive component in both compounds, associated with the 3D incommensurate magnetic order that develops below $T^{Cl}_{N}$=18.2 K and $T^{Br}_{N}$=11.4 K. The excitation in Cu_2Te_2O_5Cl_2 softens as the temperature approaches $T^{Cl}_{N}$, leaving diffuse quasi-elastic scattering above the transition temperature. In the bromide, the excitations are present well above $T^{Br}_{N}$, which might be attributed to the presence of a degree of low dimensional correlations above $T^{Br}_{N}$ in this compound.

Single crystals of the anisotropic Kagome staircase compounds Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8

Compounds with a Kagome type lattice are known to exhibit magnetic frustration. Large single crystals of two compounds Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8, which are variants of a Kagome net lattice, have been grown successfully by the floating zone technique using an optical image furnace. The single crystals are of high quality and exhibit intriguing magnetic properties.

Investigation of the field-treated magnetic state in Gd5Ge4

At low temperatures, the intermetallic compound Gd$_5$Ge$_4$ shows a sharp field-induced transition into a ferromagnetic state around 25 kOe of applied field. The material remains in the field treated ferromagnetic state even when the magnetic field is removed. We have investigated the character of this field-treated state by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The nature of the magnetization and the heat capacity are found to be different above and below a charactersitic temperature Tirr = 25 K.

Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity investigations of the unconventional spin-chain compound Sr3CuPtO6

The Heisenberg spin chain compound Sr3CuPtO6 is investigated by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. Sr3CuPtO6 has an unconventional chain structure in the sense that i) the spin half copper atoms are arranged in a zigzag chain structure, and ii) neighboring Cu atoms along the chains are separated by spin zero platinum atoms. We report that this compound shows broad features in the temperature dependence of both the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity and the magnetic susceptibility. Despite the unconventional nature of the spin chain structure, this set of data exhibits good agreement with theoretical models for a classical S = 1/2 Heisenberg spin chain compound. The values of the intra-chain coupling constant, obtained by different techniques, are found to be very close to each other. The low temperature heat capacity data (below ~ 6 K) exhibit a deviation from the theoretically expected behavior, which could be related to a small energy gap in the spin excitation spectrum.

Magnetic phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic pyrochlore Gd2Ti2O7

Gd2Ti2O7 is a highly frustrated antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice, where apart from the Heisenberg exchange the spins also interact via dipole-dipole forces. We report on low-temperature specific heat measurements performed on single crystals of Gd2Ti2O7 for three different directions of an applied magnetic field. The measurements reveal the strongly anisotropic behaviour of Gd2Ti2O7 in a magnetic field despite the apparent absence of a significant single-ion anisotropy for Gd3+. The H-T phase diagrams are constructed for H//111], H//[110] and H//[112]. The results indicate that further theoretical work beyond a simple mean-field model is required.

Field-Induced Magnetization Steps in Intermetallic Compounds and Manganese Oxides: The Martensitic Scenario

Field-induced magnetization jumps with similar characteristics are observed at low temperature for the intermetallic germanide Gd5Ge4and the mixed-valent manganite Pr0.6Ca0.4Mn0.96Ga0.04O3. We report that the field location -and even the existence- of these jumps depends critically on the magnetic field sweep rate used to record the data. It is proposed that, for both compounds, the martensitic character of their antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transitions is at the origin of the magnetization steps.

Oxygen Moment Formation and Canting in Li2CuO2

The possibilities of oxygen moment formation and canting in the quasi-1D cuprate Li2CuO2 are investigated using single crystal neutron diffraction at 2 K. The observed magnetic intensities could not be explained without the inclusion of a large ordered oxygen moment of 0.11(1) Bohr magnetons. Least-squares refinement of the magnetic structure of Li2CuO2 in combination with a spin-density Patterson analysis shows that the magnetization densities of the Cu and O atoms are highly aspherical, forming quasi-1D ribbons of localised Cu and O moments. Magnetic structure refinements and low-field magnetization measurements both suggest that the magnetic structure of Li2CuO2 at 2 K may be canted. A possible model for the canted configuration is proposed.

The role of electronic correlations on the phonon modes of MnO and NiO

The possibility of magnetic-order induced phonon anisotropy in single crystals of MnO and NiO is investigated using inelastic neutron scattering. Below Tn both compounds exhibit a splitting in their transverse optical phonon spectra of approximately 10%. This behavior illustrates that, contrary to general assumption, the dynamic properties of MnO and NiO are substantially non-cubic.

Specific heat investigation of the magnetic ordering in two frustrated spin-chain oxides: Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3CoRhO6

Specific heat measurements were carried out on the closely related spin-chain oxides Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3CoRhO6. Both compounds consist of Ising magnetic chains that are arranged on a triangular lattice. The spin coupling along and between the chains are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. Geometrical frustration is expected from the combination of these magnetic features. The present study reports that the specific heat data of these compounds exhibit similarities in the spin-freezing process at low T, whereas striking differences exist in the antiferromagnetic interchain ordering at higher T. These results are discussed in connection with previous magnetization and neutron diffraction data.

Specific heat and magnetization study on single crystals of a frustrated, quasi one-dimensional oxide: Ca3Co2O6

Specific heat and magnetization measurements have been carried out under a range of magnetic fields on single crystals of Ca3Co2O6. This compound is composed of Ising magnetic chains that are arranged on a triangular lattice. The intrachain and interchain couplings are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. This situation gives rise to geometrical frustration, that bears some similarity to the classical problem of a two-dimensional Ising triangular antiferromagnet. This paper reports on the ordering process at low-T and the possibility of one-dimensional features at high-T.
