Strong-coupling scenario of a metamagnetic transition

We investigate the periodic Anderson model in the presence of an external magnetic field, using dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the modified perturbation theory. A metamagnetic transition is observed which exhibits a massive change in the electronic properties. These are discussed in terms of the quasiparticle weight and densities of states. The results are compared with the experimental results of the metamagnetic transition in CeRu_2Si_2.

Quantum effects in the quasiparticle structure of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model

A new ``Dynamical Mean-field theory'' based approach for the Kondo lattice model with quantum spins is introduced. The inspection of exactly solvable limiting cases and several known approximation methods, namely the second-order perturbation theory, the self-consistent CPA and finally a moment-conserving decoupling of the equations of motion help in evaluating the new approach. This comprehensive investigation gives some certainty to our results: Whereas our method is somewhat limited in the investigation of the J<0-model, the results for J>0 reveal important aspects of the physics of the model: The energetically lowest states are not completely spin-polarized.A band splitting, which occurs already for relatively low interaction strengths, can be related to distinct elementary excitations, namely magnon emission (absorption) and the formation of magnetic polarons. We demonstrate the properties of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model in terms of spectral densities and quasiparticle densities of states.

Ferromagnetism in the Periodic Anderson Model: A Comparison of Spectral Density Approximation (SDA), Modified Alloy Analogy (MAA) and Modified Perturbation Theory (MPT)

We compare different approximation schemes for investigating ferromagnetism in the periodic Anderson model. The use of several approximations allows for a detailed analysis of the implications of the respective methods, and also of the mechanisms driving the ferromagnetic transition. For the Kondo limit, our results confirm a previously proposed mechanism leading to ferromagnetic order, namely an RKKY exchange mediated via the formation of Kondo screening clouds in the conduction band. The contrary case is found in the intermediate-valence regime. Here, the bandshift correction ensuring a correct high-energy expansion of the self-energy is essential. Inclusion of damping effects reduces stability of the ferromagnetic phase.

Dynamical mean-field study of ferromagnetism in the periodic Anderson model

The ferromagnetic phase diagram of the periodic Anderson model is calculated using dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the modified perturbation theory. Concentrating on the intermediate valence regime, the phase boundaries are established as function of the total electron density, the position of the atomic level and the hybridization strength. The main contribution to the magnetic moment stems from the f-electrons. The conduction band polarization is, depending on the system parameters either parallel or antiparallel to the f-magnetization. By investigating the densities of states, one observes that the change of sign of the conduction band polarization is closely connected to the hybridization gap, which is only apparent in the case of almost complete polarization of the f-electrons. Finite-temperature calculations are also performed, the Curie temperature as function of electron density and f-level position are determined. In the intermediate-valence regime, the phase transitions are found to be of second order.

Kondo screening and exhaustion in the periodic Anderson model

We investigate the paramagnetic periodic Anderson model using the dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the modified perturbation theory which interpolates between the weak and strong coupling limits. For the symmetric PAM, the ground state is always a singlet state. However, as function of the hybridization strength, a crossover from collective to local Kondo screening is found. Reducing the number of conduction electrons, the local Kondo singlets remain stable. The unpaired f-electrons dominate the physics of the system. For very low conduction electron densities, a large increase of the effective mass of the quasiparticles is visible, which is interpreted as the approach of the Mott-Hubbard transition.

Influence of spin-flip scattering on the stability of ferromagnetism in a two-band Hubbard model

We investigate the influence of an interband exchange interaction on magnetism in a two-band Hubbard model. Our main emphasis lies on spin-flip scattering which is often neglected but is neccessary to retain the full rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian. We find a striking dependence of the magnetization on the interband exchange coupling constant J and a substantial suppression of ferromagnetic order for a large range of values of J. The onset of an RKKY-like magnetic ordering mechanism is also observed.

The asymmetric single-impurity Anderson model - the modified perturbation theory

We investigate the single-impurity Anderson model by means of the recently introduced modified perturbation theory. This approximation scheme yields reasonable results away from the symmetric case. The agreement with exactly known results for the symmetric case is checked, and results for the non-symmetric case are presented. With decreasing conduction band occupation, the breakdown of the screening of the local moment is observed. In the crossover regime between Kondo limit and mixed-valence regime, an enhanced zero-temperature susceptibility is found.

Ferromagnetism within the periodic Anderson model: A new approximation scheme

We introduce a new approach to the periodic Anderson model (PAM) that allows a detailed investigation of the magnetic properties in the Kondo as well as the intermediate valence regime. Our method is based on an exact mapping of the PAM onto an effective medium strong-coupling Hubbard model. For the latter, the so-called spectral density approach (SDA) is rather well motivated since it is based on exact results in the strong coupling limit. Besides the T=0 phase diagram, magnetization curves and Curie temperatures are presented and discussed with help of temperature-dependent quasiparticle densities of state. In the intermediate valence regime, the hybridization gap plays a major role in determining the magnetic behaviour. Furthermore, our results indicate that ferromagnetism in this parameter regime is not induced by an effective spin-spin interaction between the localized levels mediated by conduction electrons as it is the case in the Kondo regime. The magnetic ordering is rather a single band effect within an effective f-band.

QSO Absorbing Galaxies at z<~1: Deep Imaging and Spectroscopy in the Field of 3C 336

We present very deep WFPC2 images and FOS spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) together with numerous supporting ground-based observations of the field of the quasar 3C 336 ($z_{em}=0.927$). The observations are designed to investigate the nature of galaxies producing metal line absorption systems in the spectrum of the QSO. Along a single line of sight, we find at least 6 metal line absorption systems (of which 3 are newly discovered) ranging in redshift from 0.317 to 0.892. Through an extensive program of optical and IR imaging, QSO spectroscopy, and faint galaxy spectroscopy, we have identified 5 of the 6 metal line absorption systems with luminous (L_K > 0.1 L*_K) galaxies. These have morphologies ranging from very late-type spiral to S0, and exhibit a wide range of inclination and position angles with respect to the QSO sightline. The only unidentified absorber, despite our intensive search, is a damped Lyman $α$ system at $z_{abs}=0.656$. Analysis of the absorption spectrum suggests that the metal abundances ([Fe/H]$=-1.2$) in this system are similar to those in damped systems at $z \sim 2$, and to the two other damped systems for which abundances have been determined at $z <1$. We have found no examples of intrinsically faint galaxies ($L < 0.1 L^{\ast}$) at small impact parameters that might have been missed as absorber candidates in our previous ground-based imaging and spectroscopic programs on MgII absorbing galaxies. There are no bright galaxies (L > 0.1 L_K) within 50h^{-1} kpc which do not produce detectable metal lines (of Mg II 2796, 2803 and/or C IV 1548, 1550) in the QSO spectrum. All of these results generally support the inferences which we have previously reached from a larger survey for absorption-selected galaxies at $z\simlt 1$.
