Studies of Neutrino-Nucleus Elastic Scattering with Point-Contact Germanium Detectors at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory

The low energy and intense flux of electron anti-neutrinos from nuclear reactors provide the perfect stage to study elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering ($\nu A_{el}$) in the fully coherent regime. We report results from the TEXONO experiment using electro-cooled $p$-type point-contact Germanium detectors with masses of 523~g and 1434~g at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory. We report improved constraints on the $\nu A_{el}$ cross section with a combined exposure of 404(813.7)~kg-days of Reactor ON(OFF) data at an electron-equivalent threshold of 200~eV$_{ee}$. The Lindhard model, in which the quenching factor is parameterized by a single parameter k, is adopted to describe the suppression of ionization yield. At the benchmark value of k=0.162, a limit of $\rho<$2.0 at 90\% confidence level (CL) is derived, where $\rho$ represents the ratio of the observed to the predicted Standard Model cross section. Moreover the region k$>$0.205 is excluded at 90\% CL using the SM-predicted $\nu A_{el}$ rate. A bound on the neutrino magnetic moment from $\nu A_{el}$ at $\mu_{\nu} {<} 5.9 \times 10^{-10}~\mu_B$ at 90\% CL is also derived.

$\Lambda_b \to \Lambda$ Form Factors from Light-Cone Sum Rules with $\Lambda$-Baryon Distribution Amplitudes

We compute the $\Lambda_b \to \Lambda$ transition form factors using light-cone sum rules based on $\Lambda$-baryon distribution amplitudes, including contributions up to twist--6. The analysis is performed for pseudoscalar, vector, and axial-vector $b\to s$ currents and for different choices of the $\Lambda_b$ interpolating current. We find that only the pseudoscalar interpolating current leads to numerically stable and phenomenologically viable form factors. The resulting form factors are parametrised using a $z$-expansion and applied to the rare decay $\Lambda_b \to \Lambda \ell^+ \ell^-$, yielding predictions for branching ratios in the low-$q^2$ region.

Nonlocal form factor of chromomagnetic penguin in $B\to K\ell^+\ell^-$ from QCD light-cone sum rules

The branching fraction of the $B \to K\ell^+\ell^-$ decay has been measured recently by the LHC experiments, showing a deviation from theory predictions based on the Standard Model (SM). A major challenge in achieving a complete SM prediction and interpreting this discrepancy lies in the treatment of nonlocal hadronic effects. In $B \to K\ell^+\ell^-$, these effects are cast in a single nonlocal form factor, a function of squared momentum transfer $q^2$ to the lepton pair. One of the previously used methods provides this form factor in the region of spacelike momentum transfer, $q^2<0$, matching the result to the hadronic dispersion relation, which is then continued to the physical region. The calculation done so far was a combination of QCD factorisation for hard-gluon contributions with light-cone sum rules (LCSRs) for soft-gluon ones. In this work, we calculate for the first time the complete nonlocal form factor at $q^2<0$ for one of the effective operators, the chromomagnetic operator $O_{8g}$, applying the method of LCSRs with $ B$-meson distribution amplitudes. We compute, both analytically and numerically, the operator-product expansion (OPE) diagrams with hard-gluon exchanges, analyse their structure and hierarchy, and obtain their spectral density entering the LCSR together with soft-gluon contributions. This study paves the way for our next task, a complete calculation of nonlocal $B \to K\ell^+\ell^-$ form factor at spacelike $q^2$, including the dominant contributions of current-current operators, known as charm-loops.

Relaxation dynamics in excited helium nanodroplets probed with high resolution, time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy

Superfluid helium nanodroplets are often considered as transparent and chemically inert nanometer-sized cryo-matrices for high-resolution or time-resolved spectroscopy of embedded molecules and clusters. On the other hand, when the helium nanodroplets are resonantly excited with XUV radiation, a multitude of ultrafast processes are initiated, such as relaxation into metastable states, formation of nanoscopic bubbles or excimers, and autoionization channels generating low-energy free electrons. Here, we discuss the full spectrum of ultrafast relaxation processes observed when helium nanodroplets are electronically excited. In particular, we perform an in-depth study of the relaxation dynamics occurring in the lowest 1s2s and 1s2p droplet bands using high resolution, time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The simplified excitation scheme and improved resolution allow us to identify the relaxation into metastable triplet and excimer states even when exciting below the droplets' autoionization threshold, unobserved in previous studies.

FeCo Nanowire-Strontium Ferrite Powder Composites for Permanent Magnets with High-Energy Products

Due to the issues associated with rare-earth elements, there arises a strong need for magnets with properties between those of ferrites and rare-earth magnets that could substitute the latter in selected applications. Here, we produce a high remanent magnetization composite bonded magnet by mixing FeCo nanowire powders with hexaferrite particles. In the first step, metallic nanowires with diameters between 30 and 100 nm and length of at least 2 {\mu}m are fabricated by electrodeposition. The oriented as-synthesized nanowires show remanence ratios above 0.76 and coercivities above 199 kA/m and resist core oxidation up to 300 {\deg}C due to the existence of a > 8 nm thin oxide passivating shell. In the second step, a composite powder is fabricated by mixing the nanowires with hexaferrite particles. After the optimal nanowire diameter and composite composition are selected, a bonded magnet is produced. The resulting magnet presents a 20% increase in remanence and an enhancement of the energy product of 48% with respect to a pure hexaferrite (strontium ferrite) magnet. These results put nanowire-ferrite composites at the forefront as candidate materials for alternative magnets for substitution of rare earths in applications that operate with moderate magnet performance.

Growth modes of nanoparticle superlattice thin films

We report about the fabrication and characterization of iron oxide nanoparticle thin film superlattices. The formation into different film morphologies is controlled by tuning the particle plus solvent-to-substrate interaction. It turns out that the wetting vs. dewetting properties of the solvent before the self-assembly process during solvent evaporation plays a major role to determine the resulting film morphology. In addition to layerwise growth also three-dimensional mesocrystalline growth is evidenced. The understanding of the mechanisms ruling nanoparticle self-assembly represents an important step toward the fabrication of novel materials with tailored optical, magnetic or electrical transport properties.

First measurement of low momentum dielectrons radiated off cold nuclear matter

We present data on dielectron emission in proton induced reactions on a Nb target at 3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy measured with HADES installed at GSI. The data represent the first high statistics measurement of proton-induced dielectron radiation from cold nuclear matter in a kinematic regime, where strong medium effects are expected. Combined with the good mass resolution of 2%, it is the first measurement sensitive to changes of the spectral functions of vector mesons, as predicted by models for hadrons at rest or small relative momenta. Comparing the e+e invariant mass spectra to elementary p+p data, we observe for e+e momenta Pee < 0.8 GeV/c a strong modification of the shape of the spectrum, which we attribute to an additional rho-like contribution and a decrease of omega yield. These opposite trends are tentatively interpreted as a strong coupling of the rho meson to baryonic resonances and an absorption of the omega meson, which are two aspects of in-medium modification of vector mesons.

Hyperon production in Ar+KCl collisions at 1.76A GeV

We present transverse momentum spectra, rapidity distribution and multiplicity of Lambda-hyperons measured with the HADES spectrometer in the reaction Ar(1.76A GeV)+KCl. The yield of Xi- is calculated from our previously reported Xi-/(Lambda+Sigma0) ratio and compared to other strange particle multiplicities. Employing a strangeness balance equation the multiplicities of the yet unmeasured charged Sigma hyperons can be estimated. Finally a statistical hadronization model is used to fit the yields of pi-, K+, K0s, K-, phi, Lambda and Xi-. The resulting chemical freeze-out temperature of T=(76+-2) MeV is compared to the measured slope parameters obtained from fits to the transverse mass distributions of the particles.

Templated self-assembly of iron oxide nanoparticles

We report on self-assembled iron oxide nanoparticle films on silicon substrates. In addition to homogeneously assembled layers, we fabricated patterned trenches of 40-1000 nm width using electron beam lithography for the investigation of assisted self-assembly. The nanoparticles with a diameter of 20 nm +/- 7% were synthesized by thermal decomposition of iron oleate complexes in trioctylamine in presence of oleic acid. Samples with different track widths and nanoparticle concentration were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry.

Structural and magnetic characterization of self-assembled iron oxide nanoparticle arrays

We report about a combined structural and magnetometric characterization of self-assembled magnetic nanoparticle arrays. Monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles with a diameter of 20 nm were synthesized by thermal decomposition. The nanoparticle suspension was spin-coated on Si substrates to achieve self-organized arrays of particles and subsequently annealed at various conditions. The samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, bright and dark field high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The structural analysis is compared to the magnetic behavior investigated by superconducting interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. We can identify either multi-phase FeO/g-Fe2O3 or multi-phase FeO/Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The FeO/g-Fe2O3 system shows a pronounced exchange bias effect which explains the peculiar magnetization data obtained for this system.

In-Medium Effects on K0 Mesons in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

We present the transverse momentum spectra and rapidity distributions of $π^{-}$ and K$^0_S$ in Ar+KCl reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.756 A GeV measured with the spectrometer HADES. The reconstructed K$^0_S$ sample is characterized by good event statistics for a wide range in momentum and rapidity. We compare the experimental $π^{-}$ and K$^0_S$ distributions to predictions by the IQMD model. The model calculations show that K$^0_S$ at low tranverse momenta constitute a particularly well suited tool to investigate the kaon in-medium potential. Our K$^0_S$ data suggest a strong repulsive in-medium K$^0$ potential of about 40 MeV strength.

Lambda-p femtoscopy in collisions of Ar+KCl at 1.76 AGeV

Results on $Λ$p femtoscopy are reported at the lowest energy so far. At a beam energy of 1.76A~GeV, the reaction Ar+KCl was studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. A high-statistics and high-purity $Λ$ sample was collected, allowing for the investigation of $Λ$ p correlations at small relative momenta. The experimental correlation function is compared to corresponding model calculations allowing the determination of the space-time extent of the $Λ$p emission source. The $Λ$p source radius is found slightly smaller than the pp correlation radius for a similar collis ion system. The present $Λ$p radius is significantly smaller than that found for Au+Au/Pb+Pb collisio ns in the AGS, SPS and RHIC energy domains, but larger than that observed for electroproduction from He. Taking into account all available data, we find the $Λ$p source radius to increase almost linearly with the number of participants to the power of one-third.

Deep sub-threshold $Ξ^-$ production in Ar+KCl reactions at 1.76A GeV

We report first results on a deep sub-threshold production of the doubly strange hyperon $Ξ^-$ in a heavy-ion reaction. At a beam energy of 1.76A GeV the reaction Ar+KCl was studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. A high-statistics and high-purity $Λ$ sample was collected, allowing for the investigation of the decay channel $Ξ^- \to Λπ^-$. The deduced $Ξ^-/(Λ+Σ^0)$ production ratio of $(5.6 \pm 1.2 ^{+1.8}_{-1.7})\cdot 10^{-3}$ is significantly larger than available model predictions.

Physics Performance Report for PANDA: Strong Interaction Studies with Antiprotons

To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be built. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. This report presents a summary of the physics accessible at PANDA and what performance can be expected.
