Variations in the Cyclotron Resonant Scattering Features during 2011 outburst of 4U 0115+63

We study the variations in the Cyclotron Resonant Scattering Feature (CRSF) during 2011 outburst of the high mass X-ray binary 4U 0115+63 using observations performed with Suzaku, RXTE, Swift and INTEGRAL satellites. The wide-band spectral data with low energy coverage allowed us to characterize the broadband continuum and detect the CRSFs. We find that the broadband continuum is adequately described by a combination of a low temperature (kT ~ 0.8 keV) blackbody and a power-law with high energy cutoff (Ecut ~ 5.4 keV) without the need for a broad Gaussian at ~ 10 keV as used in some earlier studies. Though winds from the companion can affect the emission from the neutron star at low energies (< 3 keV), the blackbody component shows a significant presence in our continuum model. We report evidence for the possible presence of two independent sets of CRSFs with fundamentals at ~ 11 keV and ~ 15 keV. These two sets of CRSFs could arise from spatially distinct emitting regions. We also find evidence for variations in the line equivalent widths, with the 11 keV CRSF weakening and the 15 keV line strengthening with decreasing luminosity. Finally, we propose that the reason for the earlier observed anti-correlation of line energy with luminosity could be due to modelling of these two independent line sets (~ 11 keV and ~ 15 keV) as a single CRSF.

Millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations and broad iron line from LMC X-1

We study the temporal and energy spectral characteristics of the persistent black hole X-ray binary LMC X-1 using two XMM-Newton and a Suzaku observation. We report the discovery of low frequency (~ 26-29 mHz) quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). We also report the variablity of the broad iron K-alpha line studied earlier with Suzaku. The QPOs are found to be weak with fractional rms amplitude in the ~ 1-2 % range and quality factor Q~2-10 . They are accompanied by weak red noise or zero-centered Lorentzian components with rms variability at the ~ 1-3 % level. The energy spectra consists of three varying components - multicolour disk blackbody (kT_{in} ~ 0.7-0.9 keV), high energy power-law tail (Gamma ~ 2.4 - 3.3) and a broad iron line at 6.4-6.9 keV. The broad iron line, the QPO and the strong power-law component are not always present. The QPOs and the broad iron line appear to be clearly detected in the presence of a strong power-law component. The broad iron line is found to be weaker when the disk is likely truncated and absent when the power-law component almost vanished. These results suggest that the QPO and the broad iron line together can be used to probe the dynamics of the accretion disk and the corona.

Application of a Relativistic Coupled-Cluster Theory to the Effective Electric Field in YbF

An accurate determination of the effective electric field (Eeff) in YbF is important, as it can be combined with the results of future experiments to give an improved new limit for the electric dipole moment of the electron. We report a relativistic coupled-cluster calculation of this quantity in which all the core electrons were excited. It surpasses the approximations made in the previous reported calculations. We obtain a value of 23.1 GV/cm for Eeff in YbF with an estimated error of less than 10%. The crucial roles of the basis sets and the core excitations in our work are discussed.

Brief remarks on "Electric dipole moment enhancement factor of thallium"

In a recent paper by Porsev et al. [arXiv:1201.5615v1], the authors have claimed to have resolved the controversy arising from the different ab initio results available for the EDM enhancement factor of Tl. In our opinion, any such attempt to resolve the discrepancies between different calculations has to thoroughly compare the basis sets used, methods employed and approximations considered in the two different cases. However, Porsev et al. have not succeeded in doing so in their current paper. We clarify some of their misunderstandings about our work and address some specific issues in this note.

Reply to Comment on "Reappraisal of the Electric Dipole Moment Enhancement Factor for Thallium"

In a recent Comment [arXiv:1108.3399], Dzuba and Flambaum have referred to the disagreement of the results of our latest calculations of Tl electron and scalar-pseudoscalar (S-PS) electric dipole moments (EDMs) and Cs parity non-conservation (PNC) with some other calculations. We have responded to all their points and also discussed the larger issues related to them. We have attempted to find the reasons for the disagreement between the results of our calculations and those of others. In particular, we have found that the two important reasons for the discrepancies between the Tl EDM calculations of Dzuba and Flambaum and ours are the different choice of single particle orbitals and the treatment of the valence-core correlation effects. We have demonstrated by numerical calculations that the $V^{N-3}$ orbitals used by Dzuba and Flambaum overestimate the Tl electron and S-PS EDMs at the Dirac-Fock level. The failure of their suggested consistency test as interpreted by us is explained for systems with strong correlation like Tl. Also, the importance of understanding the physics underlying different theories on which atomic EDM and PNC calculations are based and comparisons between them are emphasized.

A Reappraisal of the Electric Dipole Moment Enhancement Factor for Thallium

The electric dipole moment (EDM) enhancement factor of atomic Tl is of considerable interest as it has been used in determining the most accurate intrinsic electron EDM limit to date. However, the value of this quantity varies from $-179$ to $-1041$ in different approximations. In view of the large uncertainties associated with many of these calculations, we have employed the relativistic coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations and a subset of leading triple excitations and obtained the EDM enhancement factor of Tl as $-466$, which in combination with the most accurate measured value of Tl EDM yields $2.0 \times 10^{-27}\,{\mathrm e\,cm}$ as the new upper limit for the EDM of the electron. The importance of all-order correlation effects is emphasized and their trends are compared with those of two other ab initio calculations.

Comparative studies of dipole polarizabilities in Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$ and their applications to optical clocks

Static dipole polarizabilities are calculated in the ground and metastable states of Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$ using the relativistic coupled-cluster method. Trends of the electron correlation effects are investigated in these atomic ions. We also estimate the Stark and black-body radiation shifts from these results for these systems for the transitions proposed for the optical frequency standards and compare them with available experimental data.

Probing CP violation with the electric dipole moment of atomic mercury

The electric dipole moment of atomic $^{199}$Hg induced by the nuclear Schiff moment and tensor-pseudotensor electron-nucleus interactions has been calculated. For this, we have developed and employed a novel method based on the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. The results of our theoretical calculations combined with the latest experimental result of $^{199}$Hg electric dipole moment, provide new bounds on the T reversal or CP violation parameters $θ_{\rm QCD}$, the tensor-pseudotensor coupling constant $C_T$ and $(\widetilde{d}_u - \widetilde{d}_d)$. This is the most accurate calculation of these parameters to date. We highlight the the crucial role of electron correlation effects in their interplay with the P,T violating interactions. Our results demonstrate substantial changes in the results of earlier calculations of these parameters which can be attributed to the more accurate inclusion of important correlation effects in the present work.

Relativistic coupled-cluster studies of ionization potentials, lifetimes and polarizabilities in singly ionized calcium

Using the relativistic coupled-cluster method, we have calculated ionization potentials, E1 matrix elements and dipole polarizabilities of many low-lying states of Ca$^+$. Contributions from the Breit interaction are given explicitly for these properties. Polarizabilities of the ground and the first excited d-states are determined by evaluating the wave functions that are perturbed to first order by the electric dipole operator and the black-body radiation shifts are estimated from these results. We also report the results of branching ratios and lifetimes of the first excited p-states using both the calculated and experimental wavelengths and compare them with their measured values.

Analysis of parity nonconservation in the Ra+-ion

We report on a theoretical analysis of the suitability of the 7s 2S1/2 <-> 6d 2D3/2 transition in singly ionized radium to measure parity nonconservation, in the light of an experiment planned at the KVI of the University of Groningen. Relativistic coupled-cluster theory has been employed to perform an ab initio calculation of the parity nonconserving electric dipole amplitude of this transition, including single, double, and leading triple excitations. We discuss the prospects for a sub-1% precision test of the electroweak theory of particle physics.

Ab initio determination of polarizabilities and van der Waals coefficients of Li atoms using the relativistic CCSD(T) method

We report a new technique to determine the van der Waals coeffcients of lithium (Li) atoms based on the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. These quantities are determined using the imaginary parts of the scalar dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities, which are evaluated using the approach that we have proposed in [1]. Our procedure is fully ab initio, and avoids the sum-over-the-states method. We present the dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of many of the low-lying excited states of Li. Also, the off-diagonal dipole and quadrupole polarizabilites between some of the low-lying states of Li are calculated.

Intrinsic Electric Dipole Moments of Paramagnetic Atoms: Rubidium and Cesium

The electric dipole moment (EDM) of paramagnetic atoms is sensitive to the intrinsic EDM contribution from that of its constituent electrons and a scalar--pseudo-scalar (S-PS) electron-nucleus interactions. The electron EDM and the S-PS EDM contribution to atomic EDM scales as Z^3. Thus, the heavy paramagnetic atomic systems will exhibit large enhancement factors. However, the nature of the coupling is so small that it becomes an interest of high precision atomic experiments. In this work, we have computed the EDM enhancement factors of the ground states of Rb and Cs due to both the electron EDM and the S-PS EDM using the relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) theory. The importance of obtaining the precise enhancement factors and the experimental results in deducing a reliable limit on the electron EDM is emphasized.

Electric quadrupole moment of the $5d^2 D_{3/2}$ state in $^{171}Yb^+$ : A relativistic coupled-cluster analysis

The electric quadrupole moment for the $5d^{2}D_{3/2}$ state of $\mathrm{^{171}Yb^{+}}$, has been calculated using the relativistic coupled-cluster method. Earlier a similar calculation was performed for the 4d $^2D_{5/2}$ state of $\mathrm{^{88}Sr^{+}}$ which is the most accurate determination to date {[}PRL, \textbf{96}, 193001 (2006)]. The present calculation of the electric quadrupole moment of $\mathrm{^{171}Yb^{+}}$ yielded a value $2.157 ea_{0}^{2}$ where the experimental value is $2.08(11)ea_{0}^{2}$; $a_{0}$ is the Bohr radius and $e$ the elementary charge. We discuss in this paper our results in detail for $^{171}{\rm Yb}^{+}$ and highlight the dominant correlation effects present. We have presented the effect of inner core excitations and their contribution to the electric quadrupole moment, which is a property sensitive to regions away from the nucleus.

Theoretical studies of the atomic transitions in boron-like ions: Mg VIII, Si X and S XII

In this paper, we have carried out the calculations of the weighted oscillator strengths and the transition probabilities for a few low-lying transitions of boron-like ions: Mg VIII, Si X and S XII which are astrophysically important, particularly, in the atmospheres of the solar corona. We have employed an all-order relativistic many-body theory called the relativistic coupled-cluster theory to calculate very precisely these atomic quantities of astrophysical interest. We have reported for the first time the transition probabilities for some forbidden transitions which are unavailable in the literature; either theoretically or experimentally. We also discuss the physical effects associated with these transitions. Our data can be used for the identification of spectral lines arising from the coronal atmospheres of Sun and Sun-like stars having an extended corona.

The electron electric dipole moment enhancement factors of Rubidium and Caesium atoms

The enhancement factors of the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the ground states of two paramagnetic atoms; rubidium (Rb) and caesium (Cs) which are sensitive to the electron EDM are computed using the relativistic coupled-cluster theory and our results are compared with the available calculations and measurements. The possibility of improving the limit for the electron EDM using the results of our present work is pointed out.

Theoretical determination of lifetimes of metastable states in Sc III and Y III

Lifetimes of the first two metastable states in Sc^{2+} and Y^{2+} are determined using the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. There is a considerable interest in studying the electron correlation effects in these ions as though their electronic configurations are similar to the neutral alkali atoms, their structures are very different from the latter. We have made a comparative study of the correlation trends between the above doubly ionized systems with their corresponding neutral and singly ionized iso-electronic systems. The lifetimes of the excited states of these ions are very important in the field of astrophysics, especially for the study of post-main sequence evolution of the cool giant stars.

Investigations of Ra$^+$ properties to test possibilities of new optical frequency standards

The present work tests the suitability of the narrow transitions $7s \ ^2S_{1/2} \to 6d ^2D_{3/2}$ and $7s ^2S_{1/2} \to 6d ^2D_{5/2}$ in Ra$^+$ for optical frequency standard studies. Our calculations of the lifetimes of the metastable $6d$ states using the relativistic coupled-cluster theory suggest that they are sufficiently long for Ra$^+$ to be considered as a potential candidate for an atomic clock. This is further corroborated by our studies of the hyperfine interactions, dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities and quadrupole moments of the appropriate states of this system.

Optical frequency standard with $Sr^+$: A theoretical many-body approach

Demands from several areas of science and technology have lead to a worldwide search for accurate optical clocks with an uncertainty of 1 part in $10^{18}$, which is $10^{3}$ times more accurate than the present day cesium atomic clocks based on microwave frequency regime. In this article we discuss the electric quadrupole and the hyperfine shifts in the $5s ^{2}S_{1/2}\longrightarrow4d ^{2}D_{5/2}$ clock transition in $\mathrm{Sr^{+}}$, one of the most promising candidates for next generation optical clocks. We have applied relativistic coupled cluster theory for determining the electric quadrupole moment of the $4d ^{2}D_{5/2}$ state of $\mathrm{^{88}Sr^{+}}$ and the magnetic dipole ($A$) and electric quadrupole ($B$) hyperfine constants for the $5s ^{2}S_{1/2}$ and $4d ^{2}D_{5/2}$ states which are important in the study of frequency standards with $\mathrm{Sr^{+}}$. The effects of electron correlation which are very crucial for the accurate determination of these quantities have been discussed.
