Tunneling into a Luttinger liquid revisited

We study how electron-electron interactions renormalize tunneling into a Luttinger liquid beyond the lowest order of perturbation in the tunneling amplitude. We find that the conventional fixed point has a finite basin of attraction only in the point contact model, but a finite size of the contact makes it generically unstable to the tunneling-induced break up of the liquid into two independent parts. In the course of renormalization to the nonperturbative-in-tunneling fixed point, the tunneling conductance may show a nonmonotonic behavior with temperature or bias voltage.

Asymmetric spin-1/2 two-leg ladders

We consider asymmetric spin-1/2 two-leg ladders with non-equal antiferromagnetic (AF) couplings J_|| and κJ_|| along legs (κ<= 1) and ferromagnetic rung coupling, J_\perp. This model is characterized by a gap Δin the spectrum of spin excitations. We show that in the large J_\perp limit this gap is equivalent to the Haldane gap for the AF spin-1 chain, irrespective of the asymmetry of the ladder. The behavior of the gap at small rung coupling falls in two different universality classes. The first class, which is best understood from the case of the conventional symmetric ladder at κ=1, admits a linear scaling for the spin gap Δ~ J_\perp. The second class appears for a strong asymmetry of the coupling along legs, κJ_|| << J_\perp << J_|| and is characterized by two energy scales: the exponentially small spin gap Δ~ J_\perp \exp(-J_|| / J_\perp), and the bandwidth of the low-lying excitations induced by a Suhl-Nakamura indirect exchange ~ J_\perp^2 /J_|| . We report numerical results obtained by exact diagonalization, density matrix renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the spin gap and various spin correlation functions. Our data indicate that the behavior of the string order parameter, characterizing the hidden AF order in Haldane phase, is different in the limiting cases of weak and strong asymmetry. On the basis of the numerical data, we propose a low-energy theory of effective spin-1 variables, pertaining to large blocks on a decimated lattice.

Conductance through a potential barrier embedded in a Luttinger liquid: nonuniversal scaling at strong coupling

We calculate the linear response conductance of electrons in a Luttinger liquid with arbitrary interaction g_2, and subject to a potential barrier of arbitrary strength, as a function of temperature. We map the Hamiltonian in the basis of scattering states into an effective low energy Hamiltonian in current algebra form. First the renormalization group (RG) equation for weak interaction is derived in the current operator language both using the operator product expansion and the equation of motion method. To access the strong coupling regime, two methods of deducing the RG equation from perturbation theory, based on the scaling hypothesis and on the Callan-Symanzik formulation, are discussed. The important role of scale independent terms is emphasized. The latter depend on the regulaization scheme used (length versus temperature cutoff). Analyzing the perturbation theory in the fermionic representation, the diagrams contributing to the renormalization group beta-function are identified. A universal part of the beta-function is given by a ladder series and summed to all orders in g_2. First non-universal corrections beyond the ladder series are discussed and are shown to differ from the exact solutions obtained within conformal field theory which use a different regularization scheme. The RG equation for the temperature dependent conductance is solved analytically. Our result agrees with known limiting cases.

Transport of interacting electrons through a potential barrier: nonperturbative RG approach

We calculate the linear response conductance of electrons in a Luttinger liquid with arbitrary interaction g_2, and subject to a potential barrier of arbitrary strength, as a function of temperature. We first map the Hamiltonian in the basis of scattering states into an effective low energy Hamiltonian in current algebra form. Analyzing the perturbation theory in the fermionic representation the diagrams contributing to the renormalization group (RG) β-function are identified. A universal part of the β-function is given by a ladder series and summed to all orders in g_2. First non-universal corrections beyond the ladder series are discussed. The RG-equation for the temperature dependent conductance is solved analytically. Our result agrees with known limiting cases.

Spin gap and string order parameter in the ferromagnetic Spiral Staircase Heisenberg Ladder: a quantum Monte Carlo study

We consider a spin-1/2 ladder with a ferromagnetic rung coupling J_\perp and inequivalent chains. This model is obtained by a twist (θ) deformation of the ladder and interpolates between the isotropic ladder (θ=0) and the SU(2) ferromagnetic Kondo necklace model (θ=π). We show that the ground state in the (θ,J_\perp) plane has a finite string order parameter characterising the Haldane phase. Twisting the chain introduces a new energy scale, which we interpret in terms of a Suhl-Nakamura interaction. As a consequence we observe a crossover in the scaling of the spin gap at weak coupling from Δ/J_\| \propto J_\perp/J_\| for θ< θ_c \simeq 8π/9 to Δ/J_\| \propto (J_\perp/J_\|)^2 for θ> θ_c. Those results are obtained on the basis of large scale Quantum Monte Carlo calculations.

Luttinger liquids with curvature: Density correlations and Coulomb drag effect

We consider the effect of the curvature in fermionic dispersion on the observable properties of Luttinger liquid (LL). We use the bosonization technique where the curvature is irrelevant perturbation, describing the decay of LL bosons (plasmon modes). When possible, we establish the correspondence between the bosonization and the fermionic approach. We analyze modifications in density correlation functions due to curvature at finite temperatures, T. The most important application of our approach is the analysis of the Coulomb drag by small momentum transfer between two LL, which is only possible due to curvature. Analyzing the a.c. transconductivity in the one-dimensional drag setup, we confirm the results by Pustilnik et al. for T-dependence of drag resistivity, R_{12} ~ T^2 at high and R_{12} ~ T^5 at low temperatures. The bosonization allows for treating both intra- and inter-wire electron-electron interactions in all orders, and we calculate exact prefactors in low-T drag regime. The crossover temperature between the two regimes is T_1 ~ E_F Δ, with Δrelative difference in plasmon velocities. We show that Δ\neq 0 even for identical wires, due to lifting of degeneracy by interwire interaction, U_{12}, leading to crossover from R_{12} ~ U_{12}^2 T^2 to R_{12} \~ T^5/U_{12} at T ~ U_{12}.

Centipede ladder at quarter filling

We study the ground state and excitation spectrum of a quasi one-dimensional nanostructure consisting of a pole and rungs oriented in the opposite directions ("centipede ladder", CL) at quarter filling. The spin and charge excitation spectra are found in the limits of small and large longitudinal hopping $t_\|$ compared to the on-rung hopping rate $t_\perp$ and exchange coupling $I_\perp$. At small $t_\|$ the system with ferromagnetic on-rung exchange demonstrates instability against dimerization. Coherent propagation of charge transfer excitons is possible in this limit. At large $t_\|$ CL behaves like two-orbital Hubbard chain, but the gap opens in the charge excitation spectrum thus reducing the symmetry from SU(4) to SU(2). The spin excitations are always gapless and their dispersion changes from quadratic magnon-like for ferromagnetic on-rung exchange to linear spinon-like for antiferromagnetic on-rung exchange in weak longitudinal hopping limit.

Charge susceptibility in the t-J model

Momentum and doping dependence of the static charge susceptibility χ(q) in the t-t'-J model is investigated. Correlations lead to a strongly momentum dependent renormalization of χ(q). The charge susceptibility near (π,π) region of the Brillouin zone is strongly suppressed as the hole density δis decreased. However, contrary to naive expectations, χ(q) around q = (π,0) and (0,π) remains large and practically unchanged at δ\sim 0.1-0.5. This effect is consistent with a tendency towards low-energy charge fluctuations with the wave vectors along the Γ-X direction, reported in earlier studies. Our main finding is that the above trends are amplified by J-driven pairing effects, indicating that the pseudogap formation may promote the charge inhomogeneity. The next-nearest hopping t' leads to weakening of the above momentum-selective renormalizations of χ(q). We analyze the effects of long-range Coulomb interaction, taking into account a layered structure of cuprates. As an application, the results are discussed in the context of bond-stretching phonon softening in hole-doped cuprates. In particular, a peculiar doping and momentum dependence of the electron-phonon coupling constant is found.

Optical conductivity of unconventional charge density wave systems: Role of vertex corrections

The optical conductivity of a d-CDW conductor is calculated for electrons on a square lattice and a nearest-neighbor charge-charge interaction using the lowest-order conserving approximation. The spectral properties of the Drude-like peak at low frequencies and the broad hump due to transitions across the gap at large frequencies are discussed, also as a function of temperature and of the second-nearest neighbor hopping term t'. We find that vertex corrections enhance the d.c. conductivity, make the Drude peak narrower and provide a smooth transition from a renormalized regime at low to the bare theory at high frequencies. It is also shown that vertex corrections enhance the temperature dependence of the restricted optical sum leading to a non-negligible violation of the sum rule in the d-CDW state.

Ferrimagnetic mixed-spin ladders in weak and strong coupling limits

We study two similar spin ladder systems with the ferromagnetic leg coupling. First model includes two sorts of spins, s= 1/2 and s= 1, and the second model comprises only s=1/2 legs coupled by a "triangular" rung exchange. The antiferromagnetic (AF) rung coupling destroys the long-range order and eventually makes the systems equivalent to the AF s=1/2 Heisenberg chain. We investigate the situation by different methods in weak and strong rung coupling limits. Particularly we compare the spin-wave theory and the bosonization method in the weak coupling regime of the second model. We analyze the spectra and correlations, and discuss the order parameter of these ladder systems.

Spin Gap in Chains with Hidden Symmetries

We investigate the formation of spin gap in one-dimensional models characterized by the groups with hidden dynamical symmetries. A family of two-parametric models of isotropic and anisotropic Spin-Rotator Chains characterized by SU(2)x SU(2) and SO(2)x SO(2)x Z_2 x Z_2 symmetries is introduced to describe the transition from SU(2) to SO(4) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. The excitation spectrum is studied with the use of the Jordan-Wigner transformation generalized for o_4 algebra and by means of bosonization approach. Hidden discrete symmetries associated with invariance under various particle-hole transformations are discussed. We show that the spin gap in SRC Hamiltonians is characterized by the scaling dimension 2/3 in contrast to dimension 1 in conventional Haldane problem.

Optical conductivity and the sum rule in the DDW state

The density-wave with d-wave order parameter (DDW) is possibly realized in the underdoped regime of high-T_c cuprates. The DDW state is characterized by two branches of low-lying electronic excitations, and the quantum mechanical current has in particular an inter-branch contribution. The latter component causes a finite-frequency response in the optical conductivity and a reduction of the Drude contribution. We show that this redistribution of the spectral weight leaves the optical sum mostly intact, so that the restricted optical sum rule is only weakly violated.

The Hall conductivity in unconventional charge density wave systems

Charge density waves with unconventional order parameters, for instance, with d-wave symmetry (DDW), may be relevant in the underdoped regime of high-T_c cuprates or other quasi-one or two dimensional metals. A DDW state is characterized by two branches of low-lying electronic excitations. The resulting quantum mechanical current has an inter-branch component which leads to an additional mass term in the expression for the Hall conductivity. This extra mass term is parametrically enhanced near the ``hot spots'' of fermionic dispersion and is non-neglegible as is shown by numerical calculations of the Hall number in the DDW state.

Optical conductivity of one-dimensional doped Hubbard-Mott insulator

We study the optical response of a strongly correlated electron system near the metal-insulator transition using a mapping to the sine-Gordon model. With semiclassical quantization, the spectral weight is distributed between a Drude peak and absorption lines due to breathers. We calculate the Drude weight, the optical gap, and the lineshape of breather absorption.

Correlations in the Sine-Gordon Model with Finite Soliton Density

We study the sine-Gordon (SG) model at finite densities of the topological charge and small SG interaction constant, related to the one-dimensional Hubbard model near half-filling. Using the modified WKB approach, we find that the spectrum of the Gaussian fluctuations around the classical solution reproduces the results of the Bethe ansatz studies. The modification of the collective coordinate method allows us to write down the action, free from infra-red divergencies. The behaviour of the density-type correlation functions is non-trivial and we demonstrate the existence of leading and sub-leading asymptotes. A consistent definition of the charge-raising operator is discussed. The superconducting-type correlations are shown to decrease slowly at small soliton densities, while the spectral weight of right (left) moving fermions is spread over neighboring "4k_F" harmonics.

On the inverse problem for the multiple small-angle neutron scattering

We consider the small-angle multiple neutron scattering and a possibility of its model-free analysis by the inverse problem method. We show that the ill-defined problem is essentially regularized by use of a planar detector without a "beam-stop" facility. We analyze the obtained expressions with the examples of different models of scatterers.

Electrons on a sphere in disorder potential

We investigate, both analytically and numerically, the behavior of the electron gas on a sphere in the presence of point-like impurities. We find a criterion when the disorder can be regarded as small one and the main effect is the broadening of rotational multiplets. In the latter regime the statistics of one impurity-induced band is studied numerically. The energy level spacing distribution function follows the law P(s) ~ s exp(-a s^b) with 1<b<2. The number variance shows various possibilities, strongly dependent on the chosen model of disorder.
