Optical studies of charge dynamics in the optimally-doped Bi2212 and the non-superconducting cobaltate single crystals

An analysis of the frequency-dependent scattering rate reveals signatures of the superconducting gap as well as the pseudogap in high-T_c cuprates. These features can be identified in the temperature-dependent spectral function W(omega), inverted from the optical data of the optimally-doped Bi2212 using an experimentally unambiguous method that shows the behavior of both the maxima and minima in the spectral function.

Sum rules and electrodynamics of high-Tc cuprates in the pseudogap state

We explore connections between the electronic density of states (DOS) in a conducting system and the frequency dependence of the scattering rate $1/τ(ω)$ inferred from infrared spectroscopy. We show that changes in the DOS upon the development of energy gaps can be reliably tracked through the examination of the $1/τ(ω)$ spectra using the sum rules discussed in the text. Applying this analysis to the charge dynamics in high-$T_c$ cuprates we found radically different trends in the evolution of the DOS in the pseudogap state and in the superconducting state.

Electron Dynamics in Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{.15}$CuO$_{4+δ}$: Evidence for the Pseudogap State and Unconventional c-axis Response

Infrared reflectance measurements were made with light polarized along the a- and c-axis of both superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases of electron doped Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{.15}$CuO$_{4+δ}$. The results are compared to characteristic features of the electromagnetic response in hole doped cuprates. Within the CuO$_2$ planes the frequency dependent scattering rate, 1/$τ(ω)$, is depressed below $\sim$ 650 cm$^{-1}$; this behavior is a hallmark of the pseudogap state. While in several hole doped compounds the energy scales associated with the pseudogap and superconducting states are quite close, we are able to show that in Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{.15}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ the two scales differ by more than one order of magnitude. Another feature of the in-plane charge response is a peak in the real part of the conductivity, $σ_1(ω)$, at 50-110 cm$^{-1}$ which is in sharp contrast with the Drude-like response where $σ_1(ω)$ is centered at $ω=0$. This latter effect is similar to what is found in disordered hole doped cuprates and is discussed in the context of carrier localization. Examination of the c-axis conductivity gives evidence for an anomalously broad frequency range from which the interlayer superfluid is accumulated. Compelling evidence for the pseudogap state as well as other characteristics of the charge dynamics in Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{.15}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ signal global similarities of the cuprate phase diagram with respect to electron and hole doping.

Magnetic resonance at 41 meV and charge dynamics in YBa_2Cu_3O_6.95

We report an Eliashberg analysis of the electron dynamics in YBa_2Cu_3O_6.95. The magnetic resonance at 41 meV couples to charge carriers and defines the characteristic shape in energy of the scattering rate τ^{-1}(T,ω) which allows us to construct the charge-spin spectral density I^2χ(ω,T) at temperature T. The T dependence of the weight under the resonance peak in I^2χ(ω,T) agrees with experiment as does that of the London penetration depth and of the microwave conductivity. Als, at T=0 condensation energy, the fractional oscillator strength in the condensate, and the ratio of gap to critical temperature agree well with the data.

Interplane Transport and Superfluid Density in Layered Superconductors

We report on generic trends in the behavior of the interlayer penetration depth $λ_c$ of several different classes of quasi two-dimensional superconductors including cuprates, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, transition metal dichalcogenides and organic materials of the $(BEDT-TTF)_2X$-series. Analysis of these trends reveals two distinct patterns in the scaling between the values of $λ_c$ and the magnitude of the DC conductivity: one realized in the systems with a Fermi liquid (FL) ground state and the other seen in systems with a marked deviation from the FL response. The latter pattern is found primarily in under-doped cuprates and indicates a dramatic enhancement (factor $\simeq 10^2$) of the energy scale $Ω_C$ associated with the formation of the condensate compared to the data for the FL materials. We discuss implications of these results for the understanding of pairing in high-$T_c$ cuprates.

Coupling strength of charge carriers to spin fluctuations in high-temperature superconductors

In conventional superconductors, the most direct evidence of the mechanism responsible for superconductivity comes from tunneling experiments in which a clear image of the electron-phonon interaction is revealed. The observed structure in the current voltage characteristics at the phonon energies can be used to measure, through inversion of the Eliashberg equations, the electron phonon spectral density α^2F(ω). The coherence length in conventional materials is long and the tunneling process probes several atomic layers into the bulk of the superconductor. On the contrary, in the high-T_c oxides, particularly for c-axis tunneling, the coherence length can be quite short and in an optical experiment or in neutron scattering experiments the bulk of the sample is probed. Therefore, these spectroscopies become the methods of choice for the investigation of mechanisms of high-T_c superconductivity. Accurate reflectance measurements in the infrared range and precise polarized neutron scattering data are available for a variety of oxides. In this paper we show that conducting carriers studied by means of infrared spectroscopy reveal strong coupling to a resonance structure in the spectrum of spin fluctuations examined with neutron scattering. The coupling strength inferred from experiment is sufficient to account for high values of T_c which signals the prominent role of spin excitations in the superconductivity of oxides.

Optical Properties of MFe_4P_12 filled skutterudites

Infrared reflectance spectroscopy measurements were made on four members of the MFe_4P_12 family of filled skutterudites, with M=La, Th, Ce and U. In progressing from M=La to U the system undergoes a metal-insulator transition. It is shown that, although the filling atom induces such dramatic changes in the transport properties of the system, it has only a small effect on lattice dynamics. We discuss this property of the compounds in the context of their possible thermoelectric applications.

Interlayer Conductivity in the Superconductor Tl-Ba-Cu-O: Energetics and Energy Scales

We report on infrared studies of the c-axis electrodynamics of Tl-Ba-Cu-O (Tl-2201) crystals. A sum rule analysis reveals spectral weight shifts that can be interpreted as a kinetic energy change at the superconducting transistion. In optimally doped crystals, showing an incoherent normal state response, the kinetic energy is lowered at T < Tc, but no significant change is found in the over-doped samples, which have more coherent conductivity at T > Tc.

Infrared Studies of the Onset of Conductivity in Ultra-Thin Pb Films

In this paper we report the first experimental measurement of the infrared conductivity of ultra-thin quenched-condensed Pb films. For dc sheet resistances such that $ωτ\ll 1$ the ac conductance increases with frequency but is in disagreement with the predictions of weak localization. We attribute this behavior to the effects of an inhomogeneous granular structure of these films, which is manifested at the very small probing scale of infrared measurements. Our data are consistent with predictions of two-dimensional percolation theory.

Temperature Evolution of the Pseudogap State in the Infra-Red Response of Underdoped La_(2-x)Sr_xCuO_4

The ab-plane optical spectra of two single crystals of underdoped La_(2-x)Sr_xCuO_4 were investigated. The reflectivity of La_(1.87)Sr_(0.13)CuO_4 has been measured in the frequency range 30- 9,000 cm-1 (0.004 -- 1 eV) both parallel and perpendicular to the CuO_2 planes, whereas La_(1.86)Sr_(0.14)CuO_4 was studied only in the ab-plane. The extended Drude model shows that the frequency-dependent effective scattering rate 1/tau(omega)is strongly suppressed below the high-frequency straight-line extrapolation, a signature of the pseudogap state. This suppression can be seen from temperatures below the superconducting transition up to 400 K. In the case of underdoped LSCO the straight-line extrapolation is temperature independent below 200 K, whereas above 200 K there is a strong temperature dependence of the high-frequency 1/tau(omega,T). The out-of-plane direction is also examined for evidence of the pseudogap state.

Doping Dependence of the Pseudogap State in the ab plane IR responce of La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)

The ab plane optical spectra of two single crystals of La(2-x)Sr(x)Cu(4), one overdoped and one underdoped, were investigated. We observe a gap-like depression of the effective scattering rate below 700 cm(-1) in both systems. This feature persists up to 300 K in the underdoped sample with the concentration of Sr x=0.14 but loses prominance at temperatures above 300 K in the overdoped regime (x=0.22). Below 700 cm(-1) the scattering rate is temperature dependent and superlinear in frequency for both samples. Above this frequency the effective scattering rate becomes linear in frequency and is temperature independent in the case of the underdoped La(1.86)Sr(0.14)CuO(4) up to 300 K. On the other hand, the overdoped La(1.76)Sr(0.22)CuO(4) shows a scattering rate temperature dependence above 700 cm(-1) at all temperatures. This behaviour of the frequency and temperature dependent scattering rates is a signature of a pseudogap state in other HTSC materials and suggests that both the under and overdoped single-layer HTSC systems Ls(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) have a pseudogap at temperatures exceeding 300 K.

Pseudogap State in High-$T_c$ Superconductors: an Infrared Study

We report on a study of the electromagnetic response of three different families of high-T_c superconductors that in combination allowed us to cover the whole doping range from under- to overdoped. The discussion is focused on the ab-plane charge dynamics in the {\it pseudogap state} which is realized in underdoped materials below a characteristic temperature T^*; a temperature that can significantly exceed the superconducting transition temperature T_c. We explore the evolution of the pseudogap response by changing the doping level, by varying the temperature from the above to below T^*, or by introducing impurities in the underdoped compounds. We employ a memory-function analysis of the ab-plane optical data that allows us to observe the effect of the pseudogap most clearly. We compare the infrared data with other experimental results, including c-axis optical response, dc transport, and angular resolved photoemission.
