Proton radioactivity half lives with Skyrme interactions

The potential barrier impeding the spontaneous emission of protons in the proton radioactive nuclei is calculated as the sum of nuclear, Coulomb and centrifugal contributions. The nuclear part of the proton-nucleus interaction potential is obtained in the energy density formalism using Skyrme effective interaction that results into a simple algebraic expression. The half-lives of the proton emitters are calculated for the different Skyrme sets within the improved WKB framework. The results are found to be in reasonable agreement with the earlier results obtained for more complicated calculations involving finite range interactions.

Rapidly rotating axisymmetric neutron stars with quark cores

We present a systematic study of the properties of pure hadronic and hybrid compact stars. The nuclear equation of state (EoS) for beta-equilibrated neutron star matter was obtained using density dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interaction which satisfies the constraints from the observed flow data from heavy-ion collisions. The energy density of quark matter is lower than that of this nuclear EoS at higher densities implying the possibility of transition to quark matter inside the core. We solve the Einstein's equations for rotating stars using pure nuclear matter and quark core. The beta- equilibrated neutron star matter with a thin crust is able to describe highly massive compact stars but find that the nuclear to quark matter deconfinement transition inside neutron stars causes reduction in their masses. Recent observations of the binary millisecond pulsar J1614-2230 by P. B. Demorest et al. [1] suggest that the masses lie within 1.97\pm0.04 M\odot where M\odot is the solar mass. In conformity with recent observations, pure nucleonic EoS determines that the maximum mass of NS rotating with frequency below r-mode instability is ~1.95 M\odot with radius ~10 kilometers. Although compact stars with quark cores rotating with Kepler's frequency have masses up to ~2 M\odot, but if the maximum frequency is limited by the r-mode instability, the maximum mass ~1.7 M\odot turns out to be lower than the observed mass of 1.97\pm0.04 M\odot, by far the highest yet measured with such certainty, implying exclusion of quark cores for such massive pulsars.

Nuclear reaction rates and the primordial nucleosynthesis

The theoretical predictions of the primordial abundances of elements in the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) are dominated by uncertainties in the input nuclear reaction rates. We investigate the effect of modifying these reaction rates on light element abundance yields in BBN by replacing the thirty-five reaction rates out of the existing eighty-eight. We have studied these yields as functions of evolution time or temperature. We find that using these new reaction rates results in only a little increase in helium mass fraction over that obtained previously in BBN calculations. This allows insights into the role of the nuclear reaction rates in the setting of the neutron-to-proton ratio during the BBN epoch. We observe that even with considerable nuclear physics uncertainties, most of these nuclear reactions have minimal effect on the standard BBN abundance yields of $^6$Li and $^7$Li.

Proton radioactivity with a Yukawa effective interaction

The half lives of proton radioactivity of proton emitters are investigated theoretically. Proton-nucleus interaction potentials are obtained by folding the densities of the daughter nuclei with a finite range effective nucleon-nucleon interaction having Yukawa form. The Wood-Saxon density distributions for the nuclei used in calculating the nuclear as well as the Coulomb interaction potentials are predictions of the interaction. The quantum mechanical tunneling probability is calculated within the WKB framework. These calculations provide reasonable estimates for the observed proton radioactivity lifetimes. The effects of neutron-proton effective mass splitting in neutron rich asymmetric matter as well as the nuclear matter incompressibility on the decay probability are investigated.

Four pedagogic exercises

This article describes four innovative pedagogical exercises: (i) The expression for relation between cross sections in the laboratory and the centre of mass systems provided in text books assumes zero or low Q values which needs to be corrected for the most general case when Q value of the reaction is not negligible compared to the masses of interacting nuclei. The general expression derived here can be used for elastic and inelastic cases involving zero, low or even very high Q values. (ii) The equation of oscillatory motion of a massive surface put horizontally on two wheels rotating with equal and opposite angular velocities is established. The time period of oscillation is related to the coefficient of dynamic friction between the surface and the wheels which facilitates the measurement of the coefficient of dynamic friction. (iii) The equation of motion of a fixed torque mass shedding vehicle moving against friction and its velocity at any instant of time are derived. This example is equivalent to motion of a mass shedding rocket moving by applying fixed force against atmospheric friction. (iv) The equation of the path of a missile directed at every instant of time towards a rectilinearly moving target and time taken to hit the target are derived. It provides equation of path for asteroid and comet destructing missiles as conceptualized by NASA projects.

Theoretical estimates of cross sections for neutron-nucleus collisions

We construct an analytical model derived from nuclear reaction theory and having a simple functional form to demonstrate the quantitative agreement with the measured cross sections for neutron induced reactions. The neutron-nucleus total, reaction and scattering cross sections, for energies ranging from 5 to 700 MeV and for several nuclei spanning a wide mass range are estimated. Systematics of neutron scattering cross sections on various materials for neutron energies upto several hundred MeV are important for ADSS applications. The reaction cross sections of neutrons are useful for determining the neutron induced fission yields in actinides and pre-actinides. The present model based on nuclear reaction theory provides good estimates of the total cross section for neutron induced reaction.

Isospin asymmetric nuclear matter and properties of axisymmetric neutron stars

Pure hadronic compact stars, above a limiting value ($\approx$1.6 M$_\odot$) of their gravitational masses, to which predictions of most of other equations of state (EoSs) are restricted, can be reached from the equation of state (EoS) obtained using DDM3Y effective interaction. This effective interaction is found to be quite successful in providing unified description of elastic and inelastic scattering, various radioactivities and nuclear matter properties. We present a systematic study of the properties of pure hadronic compact stars. The $β$-equilibrated neutron star matter using this EoS with a thin crust is able to describe highly-massive compact stars, such as PSR B1516+02B with a mass M=1.94$^{+0.17}_{-0.19}$ M$_\odot$ and PSR J0751+1807 with a mass M=2.1$\pm$0.2 M$_\odot$ to a 1$σ$ confidence level.

Photonuclear reactions of actinides in the giant dipole resonance region

Photonuclear reactions at energies covering the giant dipole resonance (GDR) region are analyzed with an approach based on nuclear photoabsorption followed by the process of competition between light particle evaporation and fission for the excited nucleus. The photoabsorption cross section at energies covering the GDR region is contributed by both the Lorentz type GDR cross section and the quasideuteron cross section. The evaporation-fission process of the compound nucleus is simulated in a Monte-Carlo framework. Photofission reaction cross sections are analyzed in a systematic manner in the energy range of $\sim$ 10-20 MeV for the actinides $^{232}$Th, $^{238}$U and $^{237}$Np. Photonuclear cross sections for the medium-mass nuclei $^{63}$Cu and $^{64}$Zn, for which there are no fission events, are also presented. The study reproduces satisfactorily the available experimental data of photofission cross sections at GDR energy region and the increasing trend of nuclear fissility with the fissility parameter $Z^2/A$ for the actinides.

Isobaric incompressibility of the isospin asymmetric nuclear matter

The isospin dependence of the saturation properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, particularly the incompressibility $K_\infty (X) = K_\infty + K_τX^2 + O(X^4)$ at saturation density is systematically studied using density dependent M3Y interaction. The $K_τ$ characterizes the isospin dependence of the incompressibility at saturation density $ρ_0$. The approximate expression $K_{asy} \approx K_{sym}-6L$ is often used for $K_τ$ where $L$ and $K_{sym}$ represent, respectively, the slope and curvature parameters of the symmetry energy at $ρ_0$. It can be expressed accurately as $K_τ=K_{sym}-6L-\frac{Q_0}{K_\infty}L$ where $Q_0$ is the third-order derivative parameter of symmetric nuclear matter at $ρ_0$. The results of this addendum to Phys. Rev. C 80, 011305(R) (2009) indicate that the $Q_0$ contribution to $K_τ$ is not insignificant.

Isospin dependent properties of asymmetric nuclear matter

The density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy is determined from a systematic study of the isospin dependent bulk properties of asymmetric nuclear matter using the isoscalar and the isovector components of density dependent M3Y interaction. The incompressibility $K_\infty$ for the symmetric nuclear matter, the isospin dependent part $K_{asy}$ of the isobaric incompressibility and the slope $L$ are all in excellent agreement with the constraints recently extracted from measured isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonances in even-A Sn isotopes, from the neutron skin thickness of nuclei and from analyses of experimental data on isospin diffusion and isotopic scaling in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions. This work provides a fundamental basis for the understanding of nuclear matter under extreme conditions, and validates the important empirical constraints obtained from recent experimental data.

{\Large $γ$} induced multiparticle emissions of medium mass nuclei at intermediate energies

A comprehensive analysis of multiparticle emissions following photon induced reactions at intermediate energies is provided. Photon induced reaction is described in the energy range of $\sim 30-140$ MeV with an approach based on the quasideuteron nuclear photoabsorption model followed by the process of competition between light particle evaporation and fission for the excited nucleus. The evaporation-fission process of the compound nucleus is simulated in a Monte-Carlo framework. The study shows almost no fission events for the medium mass nuclei and reproduces satisfactorily well the available experimental data of photonuclear reaction cross sections at energies $\sim 30-140$ MeV.

Cluster radioactivity in very heavy nuclei: a new perspective

Exotic cluster decay of very heavy nuclei is studied using the microscopic nuclear potentials obtained by folding density dependent M3Y effective interaction with the densities of the cluster and the daughter nuclei. The microscopic nuclear potential, Coulomb interaction and the centrifugal barrier arising out of spin-parity conservation are used to obtain the potential between the cluster and the daughter nuclei. Half life values are calculated in the WKB framework and the preformation factors are extracted. The latter values are seen to have only a very weak dependence on the mass of the emitted cluster.

Nuclear equation of state at high baryonic density and compact star constraints

A mean field calculation is carried out to obtain the equation of state (EoS) of nuclear matter from a density dependent M3Y interaction (DDM3Y). The energy per nucleon is minimized to obtain ground state of the symmetric nuclear matter (SNM). The constants of density dependence of the effective interaction are obtained by reproducing the saturation energy per nucleon and the saturation density of SNM. The energy variation of the exchange potential is treated properly in the negative energy domain of nuclear matter. The EoS of SNM, thus obtained, is not only free from the superluminosity problem but also provides excellent estimate of nuclear incompressibility. The EoS of asymmetric nuclear matter is calculated by adding to the isoscalar part, the isovector component of M3Y interaction. The SNM and pure neutron matter EoS are used to calculate the nuclear symmetry energy which is found to be consistent with that extracted from the isospin diffusion in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies. The $β$ equilibrium proton fraction calculated from the symmetry energy and related theoretical findings are consistent with the constraints derived from the observations on compact stars.

Nuclear Half-Lives for Alpha Radioactivity of Elements with 100 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 130

Theoretical estimates for the half lives of about 1700 isotopes of heavy elements with Z from 100 to 130 are tabulated using theoretical Q-values. The quantum mechanical tunneling probabilities are calculated within a WKB framework using microscopic nuclear potentials. The microscopic nucleus-nucleus potentials are obtained by folding the densities of interacting nuclei with a density dependent M3Y (DDM3Y) effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. The alpha-decay half lives calculated in this formalism using the experimental Q-values were found to be in good agreement over a wide range of experimental data spanning about twenty orders of magnitude. The theoretical Q-values used for the present calculations are extracted from three different mass estimates viz. Myers-Swiatecki [MS], Muntian-Hofmann-Patyk-Sobiczewski [M] and Koura-Tachibana-Uno-Yamada [KUTY].

Search for long lived heaviest nuclei beyond the valley of stability

The existence of long lived superheavy nuclei (SHN) is controlled mainly by spontaneous fission and $α$-decay processes. According to microscopic nuclear theory, spherical shell effects at Z=114, 120, 126 and N=184 provide the extra stability to such SHN to have long enough lifetime to be observed. To investigate whether the so-called "stability island" could really exist around the above Z, N values, the $α$-decay half lives along with the spontaneous fission and $β$-decay half lives of such nuclei are studied. The $α$-decay half lives of SHN with Z=102-120 are calculated in a quantum tunneling model with DDM3Y effective nuclear interaction using $Q_α$ values from three different mass formulae prescribed by Koura, Uno, Tachibana, Yamada (KUTY), Myers, Swiatecki (MS) and Muntian, Hofmann, Patyk, Sobiczewski (MMM). Calculation of spontaneous fission (SF) half lives for the same SHN are carried out using a phenomenological formula and compared with SF half lives predicted by Smolanczuk {\it et al}. Possible source of discrepancy between the calculated $α$-decay half lives of some nuclei and the experimental data of GSI, JINR-FLNR, RIKEN are discussed. In the region of Z=106-108 with N$\sim$ 160-164, the $β$-stable SHN $^{268}_{106}Sg_{162}$ is predicted to have highest $α$-decay half life ($T_α\sim 3.2hrs$) using $Q_α$ value from MMM. Interestingly, it is much greater than the recently measured $T_α$ ($\sim 22s$) of deformed doubly magic $^{270}_{108}Hs_{162}$ nucleus. A few fission-survived long-lived SHN which are either $β$-stable or having large $β$-decay half lives are predicted to exist near $^{294}110_{184}$, $^{293}110_{183}$, $^{296}112_{184}$ and $^{298}114_{184}$. These nuclei might decay predominantly through $α$-particle emission.

Lambda hyperonic effect on the normal driplines

A generalized mass formula is used to calculate the neutron and proton drip lines of normal and lambda hypernuclei treating non-strange and strange nuclei on the same footing. Calculations suggest existence of several bound hypernuclei whose normal cores are unbound. Addition of Lambda or, Lambda-Lambda hyperon(s) to a normal nucleus is found to cause shifts of the neutron and proton driplines from their conventional limits.

Relativistic kinematics for reactions involving massless particles

Some useful kinematical relations for the absorption of a photon by a nucleus and its recoil are derived for the relativistic incident energies. These expressions provided for the relativistic kinematics of photoabsorption reactions, though simple, will be immensely useful for experimentalists as well as theoreticians.
