Microwave Power Spectra of Stimulated Phonon Emission and Spatio-Temporal Structures in an Optical-Wavelengths Acoustic Laser (Paramagnetic Phaser)

A problem of self-organized motions in solid-state nonequilibrium media has been studied experimentally using methods of quantum acoustics. Generalized Poincare cross-sections of microwave power spectra (MPS) have been obtained in an optical-wavelengths acoustic laser (paramagnetic phaser) based on ruby crystal. Considerable narrowing of MPS and their autowave-like superslow motion have been observed under conditions of periodical pump modulation beyond the region of the phaser relaxation resonance. Some preliminar experimental results of this work were published in: Solid State Communications, Vol.90, No.8, P.501 (1994). An interpretation of the experimental data see arXiv:1101.0482v1 ; arXiv:cond-mat/0410460v1 ; arXiv:cond-mat/0303188v1 .

Dynamical Phenomena in an Optical-Wavelength Phonon Laser (Phaser): Nonlinear Resonances and Self-Organized Mode Alternation

This is a part of an overview of my early studies on nonlinear spin-phonon dynamics in solid state optical-wavelength phonon lasers (phasers) started in 1984. The main goal of this work is a short description and a qualitative analysis of experimental data on low-frequency nonlinear resonances revealed in a nonautonomous ruby phaser. Under phaser pumping modulation near these resonances, an unusual kind of self-organized motions in the ruby spin-phonon system was observed by me in 1984 for the first time. The original technique of optical-wavelength microwave-frequency acoustic stimulated emission (SE) detection and microwave-frequency power spectra (MFPS) analysis was used in these experiments (description of the technique see: D.N.Makovetskii, Cand. Sci. Diss., Kharkov, 1983). The real time evolution of MFPS was studied using this technique at scales up to several hours. The phenomenon of the self-organized periodic alternation of SE phonon modes was experimentally revealed at hyperlow frequencies from about 0.1 Hz to 0.001 Hz and less (for the phaser pumping modulation at approximately 10 Hz). The nature of this phenomenon was investigated by me later in details (see: arXiv:cond-mat/0303188v1 ; arXiv:cond-mat/0410460v1 ; Tech. Phys. Letters, 2001, Vol.27, No.6, P.511-514 ; Tech. Phys., 2004, Vol.49, No.2, P.224-231).

Competition of Self-Organized Rotating Spiral Autowaves in a Nonequilibrium Dissipative System of Three-Level Phaser

We present results of cellular automata based investigations of rotating spiral autowaves in a nonequilibrium excitable medium which models three-level paramagnetic microwave phonon laser (phaser). The computational model is described in arXiv:cond-mat/0410460v2 and arXiv:cond-mat/0602345v1 . We have observed several new scenarios of self-organization, competition and dynamical stabilization of rotating spiral autowaves under conditions of cross-relaxation between three-level active centers. In particular, phenomena of inversion of topological charge, as well as processes of regeneration and replication of rotating spiral autowaves in various excitable media were revealed and visualized for mesoscopic-scale areas of phaser-type active systems, which model real phaser devices.

Optical-Wavelength Paramagnetic Phaser (Lecture Notes). Section 3.1. Nonlinear Balance Equations of Motion

In this work I present a detailed description of the simplest nonlinear model for an optical wavelength paramagnetic phaser, which is an acoustic analog of the class-B lasers. Despite of its simplicity, this model gives a satisfactory explanation of experimental data for optical-wavelength paramagnetic phasers based on high-quality acoustic Fabry-Perot resonators. In particular, this model was successfully used both for qualitative and quantitative interpretation of deterministic chaotic motions observed in spin-phonon system of a nonautonomous ruby phasers at liquid helium temperatures (see arXiv:0704.0123v1 [nlin.CD]).

Saturation of Stationary Inversion States in a Three-Level Traveling-Wave Quantum Amplifier with Bistable Resonator Pumping

The inversion states of a saturated traveling-wave three-level quantum paramagnetic amplifier have been investigated under conditions of bistable resonator pumping. The equations of motion for the vectorial order parameter have been obtained using adiabatic elimination of fast variables. The exact solutions for stationary inversion states have been found from these equations. For high-quality pump resonators, the isolated and the semi-isolated branches of the inversion ratio have been revealed in stationary solutions. The existence of the semi-isolated branches means a possibility of collapse of the inversion state under influence of a saturating signal. Revival of inversion is possible in this case only by the hard excitation of the pump system. This nonlinear phenomenon is of a qualitatively another nature than one described by us in arXiv:0901.0449v1 [nlin.AO], and may be observed at moderate Q-factor of pump resonator.

Some Remarks on Nonlinear Properties of Pumping System of an Optical-Wavelength Acoustic Laser (Phaser)

New critical surfaces have been analytically found for a 3D vectorial model of bistable pumping system of an optical-wavelength acoustic laser (phaser). The Lyapunov instability is possible for this pumping system at the upper branch for a high quality factor Qc of a pump resonator: Qc/Qm >> 1, where Qm is the magnetic quality factor. This instability is of great interest for interpretaion of some experimental data on the optical-wavelength ruby phaser (see our previous papers arXiv:cond-mat/0303188, arXiv:cond-mat/0402640, arXiv:0704.0123, arXiv:0901.0449).

Self-Organized Bottleneck and Coexistence of Incongruous States in a Microwave Phonon Laser (Phaser)

Phenomena of emergence of regular and chaotic fine structure (FS) in stimulated emission (SE) power spectra of an autonomous microwave phonon laser (phaser) have been revealed and investigated experimentally in pink ruby at liquid helium temperatures. The phenomenon of a self-organized bottleneck in evolution of the microwave acoustic FS lines has been observed by means of narrow-range phonon SE spectral analysis. The large-scale phenomenon of coexistence of incongruous (stationary, periodic and chaotic) states in the whole spin-phonon phaser system has been revealed in experiments with panoramic power spectra of phonon SE. We propose a possible direction for modeling of both the observed phenomena on the basis of three-level cellular automata (S.D.Makovetskiy and D.N.Makovetskii, arXiv:cond-mat/0410460v2; S.D.Makovetskiy, arXiv:cond-mat/0602345v1) which emulate evolution of a bounded phaser-like excitable system.

Emergence, Competition and Dynamical Stabilization of Dissipative Rotating Spiral Waves in an Excitable Medium: A Computational Model Based on Cellular Automata

We report some qualitatively new features of emergence, competition and dynamical stabilization of dissipative rotating spiral waves (RSWs) in the cellular-automaton model of laser-like excitable media proposed in arXiv:cond-mat/0410460v2 ; arXiv:cond-mat/0602345 . Part of the observed features are caused by unusual mechanism of excitation vorticity when the RSW's core get into the surface layer of an active medium. Instead of the well known scenario of RSW collapse, which takes place after collision of RSW's core with absorbing boundary, we observed complicated transformations of the core leading to regeneration (nonlinear "reflection" from the boundary) of the RSW or even to birth of several new RSWs in the surface layer. Computer experiments on bottlenecked evolution of such the RSW-ensembles (vortex matter) are reported and a possible explanation of real experiments on spin-lattice relaxation in dilute paramagnets is proposed on the basis of an analysis of the RSWs dynamics. Chimera states in RSW-ensembles are revealed and compared with analogous states in ensembles of nonlocally coupled oscillators. Generally, our computer experiments have shown that vortex matter states in laser-like excitable media have some important features of aggregate states of the usual matter.

Nonlinear Dynamics of the Phonon Stimulated Emission in Microwave Solid-State Resonator of the Nonautonomous Phaser Generator

The microwave phonon stimulated emission (SE) has been experimentally and numerically investigated in a nonautonomous microwave acoustic quantum generator, called also microwave phonon laser or phaser (see previous works arXiv:cond-mat/0303188 ; arXiv:cond-mat/0402640 ; arXiv:nlin.CG/0703050) Phenomena of branching and long-time refractority (absence of the reaction on the external pulses) for deterministic chaotic and regular processes of SE were observed in experiments with various levels of electromagnetic pumping. At the pumping level growth, the clearly depined increasing of the number of coexisting SE states has been observed both in real physical experiments and in computer simulations. This confirms the analytical estimations of the branching density in the phase space. The nature of the refractority of SE pulses is closely connected with the pointed branching and reflects the crises of strange attractors, i.e. their collisions with unstable periodic components of the higher branches of SE states in the nonautonomous microwave phonon laser.

A Computational Study of Rotating Spiral Waves and Spatio-Temporal Transient Chaos in a Deterministic Three-Level Active System

Spatio-temporal dynamics of a deterministic three-level cellular automaton (TLCA) of Zykov-Mikhailov type (Sov. Phys. - Dokl., 1986, Vol.31, No.1, P.51) is studied numerically. Evolution of spatial structures is investigated both for the original Zykov-Mikhailov model (which is applicable to, for example, Belousov-Zhabotinskii chemical reactions) and for proposed by us TLCA, which is a generalization of Zykov-Mikhailov model for the case of two-channel diffusion. Such the TLCA is a minimal model for an excitable medium of microwave phonon laser, called phaser (D. N. Makovetskii, Tech. Phys., 2004, Vol.49, No.2, P.224; cond-mat/0402640). The most interesting observed forms of TLCA dynamics are as follows: (a) spatio-temporal transient chaos in form of highly bottlenecked collective evolution of excitations by rotating spiral waves (RSW) with variable topological charges; (b) competition of left-handed and right-handed RSW with unexpected features, including self-induced alteration of integral effective topological charge; (c) transient chimera states, i.e. coexistence of regular and chaotic domains in TLCA patterns; (d) branching of TLCA states with different symmetry which may lead to full restoring of symmetry of imperfect starting pattern. Phenomena (a) and (c) are directly related to phaser dynamics features observed earlier in real experiments at liquid helium temperatures on corundum crystals doped by iron-group ions. Superslow Self-Organized Motions in a Multimode Microwave Phonon Laser (Phaser) under Resonant Destabilization of Stationary Acoustic Stimulated Emission

Two qualitatively different kinds of resonant destabilization of phonon stimulated emission (SE) are experimentally revealed for periodically forced multimode ruby phaser (phonon laser) operating at SE frequencies about 9 GHz, i.e. at microwave acoustic wavelengths of 1 micron. The inversion state of Cromium(3+) spin-system in ruby was created by electromagnetic pump at 23 GHz. Under deep modulation of pump power at low frequencies OMEGA_m = 70-200 Hz deterministic chaotic reconfigurations of the acoustic microwave power spectra (AMPS) were observed. This range of SE destabilization corresponds to the relaxational resonance that is well known for optical class-B lasers. Outside the relaxational resonance range, namely at ultra-low (infrasonic) frequencies OMEGA_m about 10 Hz, the other type of resonant destabilization of stationary phonon SE was observed by us for the first time. This new nonlinear resonance (we call it lambda-resonance) manifests itself as very slow and periodically repeated self-reconfigurations of AMPS. Near the vertex of lambda-resonance the period of AMPS self-reconfigurations takes giant values of several hours (at T=1.8 K). The second type of SE resonant destabilization is explained in terms of antiphase energy exchange between acoustic SE modes in a modulated phaser. The role of polarized nuclear spin-reservoir (formed by Aluminium-27 nuclei of the ruby crystalline matrix) in these superslow self-organized motions is discussed. PACS: 05.65.+b, 42.65.Sf, 43.35.+d

Self-Organization in Multimode Microwave Phonon Laser (Phaser): Experimental Observation of Spin-Phonon Cooperative Motions

An unusual nonlinear resonance was experimentally observed in a ruby phonon laser (phaser) operating at 9 GHz with an electromagnetic pumping at 23 GHz. The resonance is manifested by very slow cooperative self-detunings in the microwave spectra of stimulated phonon emission when pumping is modulated at a superlow frequency (less than 10 Hz). During the self-detuning cycle new and new narrow phonon modes are sequentially ``fired'' on one side of the spectrum and approximately the same number of modes are ``extinguished'' on the other side, up to a complete generation breakdown in a certain final portion of the frequency axis. This is usually followed by a short-time refractority, after which the generation is fired again in the opposite (starting) portion of the frequency axis. The entire process of such cooperative spectral motions is repeated with high degree of regularity. The self-detuning period strongly depends on difference between the modulation frequency and the resonance frequency. This period is incommensurable with period of modulation. It increases to very large values (more than 100 s) when pointed difference is less than 0.05 Hz. The revealed phenomenon is a kind of global spin-phonon self- organization. All microwave modes of phonon laser oscillate with the same period, but with different, strongly determined phase shifts - as in optical lasers with antiphase motions.
