Abnormal dense and dilute nuclear systems

Researchers have long been interested in exotic states of matter. In the early 1970s, Migdal proposed the existence of metastable or stable nuclei containing a pion condensate, and Bodmer posited the existence of collapsed nuclei with a quark core. Lee and Wick proposed that compressed nuclear matter could undergo a phase transition into a scalar condensate state with effectively very light baryons. In the mid-1980s, Witten pointed out that strange quark matter may be an absolutely stable form of matter that can exist in the form of quark strangelets. These hypotheses stimulated large experimental efforts to detect these states in heavy-ion collisions and in terrestrial samples. Additionally, the cosmos is the arena for a broad search for traces of exotic matter in compact objects and other energetic phenomena. We review various approaches and arguments for the possibility of abnormal states of matter, including metastable and stable dense objects with condensates, as well as dilute nuclear objects. Among these, we discuss scalar condensate and p-wave and s-wave pion condensations in dense nuclear systems and the formation of a $Δ$ resonance matter. Then we consider a scalar mode condensation triggered by the Pomeranchuk instability in dilute nuclear matter, and clustering. We also mention recent ideas that a relativistic rotation and a dark-matter component may stabilize abnormal nuclear systems. Finally, we list some observational anomalies that cannot yet be appropriately explained by conventional physics.

Charged scalar bosons under rotation and acceleration

Creation of charged spinless bosons from vacuum in the rigidly rotating frame is studied in presence of the external static electromagnetic fields, being formed either in the resting, or in the general rotating or in the local-flat frames. It is shown that the description remains the same in the resting and the local-flat frames. More specifically, the case of a solenoid (magnetic flux tube) embedded into the rotating empty cylinder (rotation frame) is studied in presence or absence of a static square electric potential well $eA_0$. A supervortex of a spinless-boson field can be created from vacuum when the rotation frequency exceeds a critical value $Ω_c$. It is shown that $Ω_c$ is smaller provided the solenoid rests in the resting frame. Then the case is considered when the rotating frame additionally moves with acceleration $\vec{w}(\vec{r})\neq 0$. A specific case $w(r)=G/r$ for $G=const$ is treated explicitly. It is shown that for $G<0$ the charged spinless-boson vortex can be created in rapidly rotating system even in the limit when the magnetic and electric fields tend to zero.

Generation of a scalar vortex in a rotational frame

We consider generation from the vacuum of a scalar charged field in a rigidly rotating frame. Adding an external magnetic field opens the way to Bose condensation of the field. This phenomenon has been studied for external uniform magnetic field occupying the whole volume of the uniformly rotating cylindrical system of finite radius $R$ with a Dirichlet boundary condition imposed on it. Besides continuing this study, we consider the field formed by a flux tube of small radius. We find numerical solutions of the Ginzburg-Pitaevskii equation for the charged scalar field, the critical rotation frequencies, the mean radii and the condensate energies, and compare them with those found in a linearization scheme and with approximate analytical solutions. We show that for the same input parameters the energy of the condensate in the case of the flux tube is lower than in the case of uniform magnetic field in the whole cylinder.

Examination of the possibility of $π^0$ condensation and magnetization in freely interpenetrating nuclei

Conditions are found, at which in nuclear matter there may appear a spatially nonuniform $p$ wave $π^0$ condensate supplemented by a spatially varying spontaneous magnetization. The pion-nucleon interaction and the anomaly contributions to magnetization are taken into account. Response of the system on external magnetic field is also considered. Then the model of nonoverlapped nucleon Fermi spheres is employed. Arguments are given in favor of possibility of the occurrence of the $π^0$-condensation and a spatially varying magnetization as well as effects of pronounced anisotropic pion fluctuations at finite pion momentum in peripheral heavy-ion collisions. Relevant effects such as response on the rotation, charged pion condensation and other are discussed.

Pion condensation at rotation in magnetic field, electric and scalar potential wells

Instability of the charged pion vacuum resulting in the pion condensation is studied within the $λ|ϕ|^4$ model at the rapid rotation of the system in presence of external fields. Case of the static external scalar and electric square potential wells and the uniform magnetic field is studied in detail. The Meissner and Aharonov-Bohm effects and the London moment are taken into account. Analogies and differences with the behavior of metallic superconductors under the action of the rotation and the external magnetic field are analysed.

Charged pion vortices in rotating systems

Possibilities for formation of the charged pion field vortices in a rotating empty vessel (in vacuum) and in the rotating pion gas with a dynamically fixed particle number at zero temperature are studied within the $λ|ϕ|^4$ model. It is shown that in the former case at a rapid rotation a supervortex of a charged pion field can be formed. Important role played by the electric field is demonstrated. Field configurations in presence and absence of the pion self-interaction are found. Conditions for formation of the vortex lattice at the rotation of the charged pion gas at zero temperature are studied. Observational effects are discussed.

The NICER data and a $σ$-field dependent stiffness of the hadronic equation of state

Analyses for the NICER data indicate that there is no significant variation of the compact star radii within the mass range of 1.4 to 2.0 solar masses. Yamamoto et al. [Phys. Rev. C 108, 035811 (2023)] concluded recently that ``this feature cannot be reproduced by the hadronic matter due to the softening of the equation of state (EoS) by hyperon mixing, suggesting the possible existence of quark phases in neutron-star interiors.'' Using a collection of 162 purely nucleonic, hyperonic, and quarkish EoSs from CompOSE database and some other works, we verify that hyperons indeed lead to a significant difference in radii of stars of 1.4 and 2.0 solar masses, which diminishes in the presence of quarks. We compare the shapes of the mass-radius curves and show that hyperons and quarks in the neutron star cores prefer a particular curve shape with backbending. It is argued that the shape {is controlled by the density dependence} of the nuclear symmetry energy. We draw attention to the existence of a class of purely hadronic relativistic mean-field EoSs with scalar-field dependent hadron masses and coupling constants that satisfy the known constraints on the EoSs including the analyses of the new NICER data and the above requirement of no significant variation of the neutron star radii.

Pion-sigma meson vortices in rotating systems

Possibilities of the formation of the pion-sigma meson field vortices in a rotating empty vessel (in vacuum) and in the pion-sigma Bose-Einstein condensates at a dynamically fixed particle number are studied within the linear $σ$ model at zero temperature. The charged $σπ^{\pm}$ and neutral $σπ^0$ complex field ansatze (models 1 and 2) are studied. First it is analysed, which of these configurations is energetically favorable in case of the system at rest. Then conditions are found, at which a chiral field storm can arise in a rotating empty vessel. In the model 1 an important role played by the electric field is demonstrated. Its appearance may allow for formation of a supervortex (vortex with a large angular momentum) in case of the empty vessel rotating with an overcritical angular velocity. Influence of magnetic field is also studied. Field configurations in presence and absence of the meson self-interaction are found in both models. Then it is shown that description of the charged (in model 1) and neutral (in model 2) rotating pion-sigma Bose-Einstein condensates is analogous to that for the Bose-Einstein condensates in cold atomic gases. Various field configurations such as vortex lines, rings and spirals are discussed. Conditions for existence of the rigid-body rotation of the vortex lattice are then analysed. Observational effects for vortex fields in rotating vessels, energetic heavy-ion collisions and in rotating superheavy nuclei and nuclearites are discussed.

Conserving approximations to dilute equilibrium systems. Pair interaction potential

We study self-consistent approximations such as the $Φ$-derivable and virial approaches to dilute strongly interacting systems in equilibrium. We consider a system of non-relativistic fermions of one kind interacting via a pair potential Thermodynamical quantities are expressed in terms of various spectral functions. We review the $Φ$ derivable approximation scheme demonstrating the exact conservation of the Noether and the Botermans-Malfliet fermion number densities, and then for $Φ$ described by the tadpole and sandwich diagrams we show the coincidence of these two number densities. As examples of test pair potentials, we consider the Yukawa central nucleon-nucleon potentials within Walecka, CD Bonn, and Reid parameterizations, and the corresponding classical Lennard-Jones potentials. Expressions for the second and third virial coefficients are derived and analyzed for $Φ$ described by the tadpole and sandwich diagrams. Next, we focus on the virial approach to the equation of state. Classical, semiclassical, and purely quantum approaches are studied in detail. Then, different extrapolations of the virial equation of state are considered including the van~der~Waals form and excluded-volume models. We derive the expression for the second virial coefficient using the effective range approximation for the scattering amplitude and compare the result with the purely quantum result using the experimental phase shifts. Attention is focused on the problem of anomalously large value of the nucleon-nucleon scattering length appearing due to the presence of the quasi-bound state in nucleon-nucleon scattering, which can be destroyed in the matter because of the action of the Pauli blocking. We present results for the second virial coefficient subtracting this term. We discuss the validity of such a procedure to describe the equation of state of the nuclear matter in the virial limit.

Structure formation during phase transitions in strongly interacting matter

A broad range of problems associated with phase transitions in systems characterized by the strong interaction between particles and with formation of structures is reviewed. A general phenomenological mean-field model is constructed describing phase transitions of the first and the second order to the $k_0=0$ and $\vec{k}_0\neq 0$ states. Due to fluctuations, the phase transition to the state $\vec{k}_0\neq 0$ is the transition of the first order. Various specific features of the phase transitions to the state $\vec{k}_0\neq 0$ are considered such as the anisotropic spectrum of excitations, a possibility of the formation of various structures including running and standing waves, three-axis structures, chiral waves, pasta phases, etc. A formal transition to hydrodynamical variables is performed. Then focus is made on description of the dynamics of the order parameter at the phase transitions to the states with $\vec{k}_0= 0$ and $\vec{k}_0\neq 0$. Next the non-ideal hydrodynamical description of the phase transitions of the liquid-gas type in nuclear systems is performed. Quasiperiodic structures are developed. Next, pion condensation phase transition to the $\vec{k}_0\neq 0$ state in dense, cold or warm nuclear matter is considered and then the high temperature -- small baryon chemical potential system is studied, when baryons become completely blurred and light bosons, e.g., pions, may condense either in $\vec{k}_0= 0$ or $\vec{k}_0\neq 0$ states. Then, for scalar collective modes phenomena of the Pomeranchuk instability and the Bose condensation in $\vec{k}_0= 0$ or $\vec{k}_0\neq 0$ states are studied. Next, possibility of the condensation of Bose excitations in the $\vec{k}_0\neq 0$ state in moving media is considered. Then Bose-Einstein condensation of pions at dynamically fixed number of particles is studied and specific non-equilibrium effects are demonstrated on an example.

S-wave pion condensation in symmetric nuclear matter

S-wave pion-nucleon interactions in the linear sigma model, and in Manohar-Georgi and Gasser-Sainio-Svarc models with finite number of terms in Lagrangians, as well as in a general phenomenological approach are reviewed. Subtleties associated with the current algebra theorems and field redefinitions are discussed. In the first and third models most likely the s-wave pion condensation in the isospin-symmetric matter does not occur at least up to high densities, whereas within the second model it may appear already at moderate densities. In the phenomenological approach two parameterizations of the s-wave pion-nucleon scattering amplitude and the pion polarization operator used in the literature are considered. The first parameterization employs the off-mass-shell amplitude and allows to fulfil the current algebra theorems. Using it the s-wave pion polarization operator in the isospin-symmetric matter is reconstructed within the gas approximation. With this pion polarization operator the s-wave pion condensation in the isospin-symmetric matter does not occur at least up to high densities. Second parameterization uses the on-mass-shell pion-nucleon scattering amplitude and does not satisfy the Adler and Weinberg conditions. With such a parameterization most likely the s-wave pion condensation in the isospin-symmetric matter may occur already at the nucleon density $n\simeq (1.4-2.5) n_0$, where $n_0$ is the density of the atomic nucleus, that should result in observable effects. Both parameterizations allow to successfully describe the pion atom data.

Vector-boson condensates, spin-triplet superfluidity of paired neutral and charged fermions, and $3P_2$ pairing of nucleons

After reminding of properties of the condensate of the complex scalar field in the external uniform magnetic field $H$ focus is made on the study of phases of the complex neutral vector boson fields coupled with magnetic field by the Zeeman coupling and phases of the charged vector boson fields. These systems may behave as nonmagnetic and ferromagnetic superfluids and ordinary and ferromagnetic superconductors. Response of the ferromagnetic superfluid and superconducting systems occupying half of space on the external uniform static magnetic field $H$ is thoroughly studied. Then the spin-triplet pairing of neutral fermions at conserved spin is considered. Novel phases are found. In external magnetic field the phase with zero mean spin proves to be unstable to the formation of a phase with a non-zero spin. For $H>H_{\rm cr 2}$ the spin-triplet pairing and ferromagnetic superfluidity continue to exist above the "old" phase transition critical temperature $T_{\rm cr}$. For a certain parameter choice ferromagnetic superfluid phases are formed already for $H=0$, characterized by an own magnetic field $h$. Formation of domains is discussed. Next, spin-triplet pairing of charged fermions is studied. Novel phases are found with a ferromagnetic superconductivity. Then, the 3P$_2$ $nn$ pairing in neutron star matter is studied. Also a 3P$_2$ $pp$ pairing is considered. Numerical estimates are performed in the BCS weak coupling limit and beyond it for the $3P_2$ $nn$ and $pp$ pairings, as well as for the 3S$_1$ $np$ pairing.

Electron-positron vacuum instability in strong electric fields. Relativistic semiclassical approach

Instability of electron-positron vacuum in strong electric fields is studied. First, falling to the Coulomb center is discussed at $Z>137/2$ for a spinless boson and at $Z>137$ for electron. Then, focus is concentrated on description of deep electron levels and spontaneous positron production in the field of a finite-size nucleus with the charge $Z>Z_{\rm cr}\simeq 170$. Next, these effects are studied in application to the low-energy heavy-ion collisions. Then, we consider phenomenon of "electron condensation" on levels of upper continuum crossed the boundary of the lower continuum $ε=-m$ in the field of a supercharged nucleus with $Z\gg Z_{\rm cr}$. Finally, attention is focused on many-particle problems of polarization of the QED vacuum and electron condensation at ultra-short distances from a source of charge. We argue for a principal difference of cases, when the size of the source is larger than the pole size $r_{\rm pole}$, at which the dielectric permittivity of the vacuum reaches zero, and smaller $r_{\rm pole}$. Some arguments are presented in favor of the logical consistency of QED. All problems are considered within the same relativistic semiclassical approach.

Evolution of quasiperiodic structures in non-ideal hydrodynamic description of phase transitions

Various phase transitions could have taken place in the early Universe, and may occur in the course of heavy-ion collisions and supernova explosions, in proto-neutron stars, cold compact stars, and in the condensed matter at terrestrial conditions. Most generally, the dynamics of the density and temperature at first- and second-order phase transitions can be described with the help of the equations of non-ideal hydrodynamics. In the given work some novel solutions are found describing the evolution of quasiperiodic structures that are formed in the course of the phase transitions. Although this consideration is very general, particular examples of quark-hadron and nuclear liquid-gas first-order phase transitions to the uniform k_0=0 state and pion condensate second-order phase transition to non-uniform k_0\neq 0 state in dense baryon matter are considered.

Charge and isospin fluctuations in a non-ideal pion gas with dynamically fixed particle number

We study the behavior of the non-ideal pion gas with the dynamically fixed number of particles, formed on an intermediate stage in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The pion spectrum is calculated within the self-consistent Hartree approximation. General expressions are derived for cross-covariances of the number of various particle species in the pion gas of an arbitrary isospin composition. The behavior of the cross-variances is analyzed for the temperature approaching from above the maximal critical temperature of the Bose-Einstein condensation for the pion species $a=\pm,0$, i.e. for $T>\max T_{\rm cr}^a$. It is shown that in case of the system with equal averaged numbers of isospin species, the variance of the charge, $Q=N_{+}-N_{-}$, diverges at $T\to T_{\rm cr}=T_{\rm cr}^a$, whereas variances of the total particle number, $N=N_{+} + N_{-} + N_{0}$, and of a relative abundance of charged and neutral pions, $G=(N_{+}+N_{-})/2 - N_{0}$, remain finite in the critical point. Then fluctuations are studied in the pion gas with small isospin imbalance $0<|G|\ll N$ and $0<|Q|\ll N$\, and shifts of the effective masses, chemical potentials and values of critical temperatures are calculated for various pion species, and the highest critical temperature, $\mbox{max}T_{\rm cr}^{a}$ is found, above which the pion system exists in the non-condensed phase. Various pion cross variances are calculated for $T>\mbox{max}T_{\rm cr}^{a}$, which prove to be strongly dependent on the isospin composition of the system, whereas the variances of $N$ and $G$ are found to be independent on the isospin imbalance up to the term linear in $G/N$ and $Q/N$.

Hybrid equation of state with pasta phases and third family of compact stars

The effect of pasta phases on the quark-hadron phase transition is investigated for a set of relativistic mean-field equations of state for both hadron and quark matter. The results of the full numerical solution with pasta phases are compared with those of an interpolating construction used in previous works, for which we demonstrate an adequate description of the numerical results. A one-to-one mapping of the free parameter of the construction to the physical surface tension of the quark-hadron interface is obtained for which a fit formula is given. For each pair of quark and hadron matter models the critical value of the surface tension is determined, above which the phase transition becomes close to the Maxwell construction. This result agrees well with earlier theoretical estimates. The study is extended to neutron star matter in beta equilibrium with electrons and muons and is applied to investigate the effect of pasta phases on the structure of hybrid compact stars and the robustness of a possible third family solution.

RMF models with $σ$-scaled hadron masses and couplings for description of heavy-ion collisions below 2A GeV

Within the relativistic mean-field framework with hadron masses and coupling constants dependent on the mean scalar field we study properties of nuclear matter at finite temperatures, baryon densities and isospin asymmetries relevant for heavy-ion collisions at laboratory energies below 2$A$ GeV. Previously constructed (KVORcut-based and MKVOR-based) models for the description of the cold hadron matter, which differ mainly by the density dependence of the nucleon effective mass and symmetry energy, are extended for finite temperatures. The baryon equation of state, which includes nucleons and $Δ$ resonances is supplemented by the contribution of the pion gas described either by the vacuum dispersion relation or with taking into account the $s$-wave pion-baryon interaction. Distribution of the charge between components is found. Thermodynamical characteristics on $T-n$ plane are considered. The energy-density and entropy-density isotherms are constructed and a dynamical trajectory of the hadron system formed in heavy-ion collisions is described. The effects of taking into account the $Δ$ isobars and the $s$-wave pion-nucleon interaction on pion differential cross sections, pion to proton and $π^-/π^+$ ratios are studied. The liquid-gas first-order phase transition is studied within the same models in isospin-symmetric and asymmetric systems. We demonstrate that our models yield thermodynamic characteristics of the phase transition compatible with available experimental results. In addition, we discuss the scaled variance of baryon and electric charge in the phase transition region. Effect of the non-zero surface tension on spatial redistribution of the electric charge is considered for a possible application to heavy-ion collisions at low energies.

Robustness of third family solutions for hybrid stars against mixed phase effects

We investigate the robustness of third family solutions for hybrid compact stars with a quark matter core that correspond to the occurrence of high-mass twin stars against a softening of the phase transition by means of a construction that mimics the effects of pasta structures in the mixed phase. We consider a class of hybrid equations of state that exploits a relativistic mean-field model for the hadronic as well as for the quark matter phase. We present parametrizations that correspond to branches of high-mass twin star pairs with maximum masses between $2.05~M_\odot$ and $1.48~M_\odot$ having radius differences between 3.2 km and 1.5 km, respectively. When compared to a Maxwell construction with a fixed value of critical pressure $P_c$ the effect of the mixed phase construction consists in the occurrence of a region of pressures around $P_c$ belonging to the coexistence of hadronic and quark matter phases between the onset pressure at $P_H$ and the end of the transition at $P_Q$. The maximum broadening which would still allow mass twin compact stars is found to be $(P_Q-P_H)_{\rm max} \approx P_c$ for all parametrizations within the present class of models. At least the heavier of the neutron stars of the binary merger GW170817 could have been a member of the third family of hybrid stars.
