Observation of collapse and revival in a superconducting atomic frequency comb

Recent advancements in superconducting circuits have enabled the experimental study of collective behavior of precisely controlled intermediate-scale ensembles of qubits. In this work, we demonstrate an atomic frequency comb formed by individual artificial atoms strongly coupled to a single resonator mode. We observe periodic microwave pulses that originate from a single coherent excitation dynamically interacting with the multi-qubit ensemble. We show that this revival dynamics emerges as a consequence of the constructive and periodic rephasing of the five superconducting qubits forming the vacuum Rabi split comb. In the future, similar devices could be used as a memory with in-situ tunable storage time or as an on-chip periodic pulse generator with non-classical photon statistics.

Driven-dissipative time crystalline phases in a two-mode bosonic system with Kerr nonlinearity

For the driven-dissipative system of two coupled bosonic modes in a nonlinear cavity resonator, we demonstrate a sequence of phase transitions from a trivial steady state to two distinct dissipative time crystalline phases. These effects are already anticipated at the level of the semiclassical analysis of the Lindblad equation using the theory of bifurcations and are further supported by the full quantum (numerical) treatment. The system is predicted to exhibit different dynamical phases characterized by an oscillating non-equilibrium steady state with non-trivial periodicity, which is a hallmark of time crystals. We expect that these phases can be directly probed in various cavity QED experiments.

Interaction-induced connectivity of disordered two-particle states

We study the interaction-induced connectivity in the Fock space of two particles in a disordered one-dimensional potential. Recent computational studies showed that the largest localization length $ξ_2$ of two interacting particles in a weakly random tight binding chain is increasing unexpectedly slow relative to the single particle localization length $ξ_1$, questioning previous scaling estimates. We show this to be a consequence of the approximate restoring of momentum conservation of weakly localized single particle eigenstates, and disorder-induced phase shifts for partially overlapping states. The leading resonant links appear among states which share the same energy and momentum. We substantiate our analytical approach by computational studies for up to $ξ_1 = 1000$. A potential nontrivial scaling regime sets in for $ ξ_1 \approx 400$, way beyond all previous numerical attacks.

Delocalization of wave packets in disordered nonlinear chains

We consider the spatiotemporal evolution of a wave packet in disordered nonlinear Schrödinger and anharmonic oscillator chains. In the absence of nonlinearity all eigenstates are spatially localized with an upper bound on the localization length (Anderson localization). Nonlinear terms in the equations of motion destroy Anderson localization due to nonintegrability and deterministic chaos. At least a finite part of an initially localized wave packet will subdiffusively spread without limits. We analyze the details of this spreading process. We compare the evolution of single site, single mode and general finite size excitations, and study the statistics of detrapping times. We investigate the properties of mode-mode resonances, which are responsible for the incoherent delocalization process.

Reflection resonances in surface-disordered waveguides: strong higher-order effects of the disorder

We study coherent wave scattering through waveguides with a step-like surface disorder and find distinct enhancements in the reflection coefficients at well-defined resonance values. Based on detailed numerical and analytical calculations, we can unambiguously identify the origin of these reflection resonances to be higher-order correlations in the surface disorder profile which are typically neglected in similar studies of the same system. A remarkable feature of this new effect is that it relies on the longitudinal correlations in the step profile, although individual step heights are random and thus completely uncorrelated. The corresponding resonances are very pronounced and robust with respect to ensemble averaging, and lead to an enhancement of wave reflection by more than one order of magnitude.

Nonlinear waves in disordered chains: probing the limits of chaos and spreading

We probe the limits of nonlinear wave spreading in disordered chains which are known to localize linear waves. We particularly extend recent studies on the regimes of strong and weak chaos during subdiffusive spreading of wave packets [EPL {\bf 91}, 30001 (2010)] and consider strong disorder, which favors Anderson localization. We probe the limit of infinite disorder strength and study Fröhlich-Spencer-Wayne models. We find that the assumption of chaotic wave packet dynamics and its impact on spreading is in accord with all studied cases. Spreading appears to be asymptotic, without any observable slowing down. We also consider chains with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearity which give further support to our findings and conclusions.

Wave interactions in localizing media - a coin with many faces

A variety of heterogeneous potentials are capable of localizing linear non-interacting waves. In this work, we review different examples of heterogeneous localizing potentials which were realized in experiments. We then discuss the impact of nonlinearity induced by wave interactions, in particular its destructive effect on the localizing properties of the heterogeneous potentials.

Statistics of wave interactions in nonlinear disordered systems

We study the properties of mode-mode interactions for waves propagating in nonlinear disordered one-dimensional systems. We focus on i) the localization volume of a mode which defines the number of interacting partner modes, ii) the overlap integrals which determine the interaction strength, iii) the average spacing between eigenvalues of interacting modes, which sets a scale for the nonlinearity strength, and iv) resonance probabilities of interacting modes. Our results are discussed in the light of recent studies on spreading of wave packets in disordered nonlinear systems, and are related to the quantum many body problem in a random chain.

The crossover from strong to weak chaos for nonlinear waves in disordered systems

We observe a crossover from strong to weak chaos in the spatiotemporal evolution of multiple site excitations within disordered chains with cubic nonlinearity. Recent studies have shown that Anderson localization is destroyed, and the wave packet spreading is characterized by an asymptotic divergence of the second moment $m_2$ in time (as $t^{1/3}$), due to weak chaos. In the present paper, we observe the existence of a qualitatively new dynamical regime of strong chaos, in which the second moment spreads even faster (as $t^{1/2}$), with a crossover to the asymptotic law of weak chaos at larger times. We analyze the pecularities of these spreading regimes and perform extensive numerical simulations over large times with ensemble averaging. A technique of local derivatives on logarithmic scales is developed in order to quantitatively visualize the slow crossover processes.

Optomechanics of liquid crystals for dynamical optical response of photonic structures

We show that the mechanical effect of light on the orientational ordering of the crystalline axis of a mesophase can be used to control the dynamics of the optical response of liquid crystal infiltrated photonic structures. The demonstration is made using a one-dimensional periodic structure whose periodicity is broken by the presence of a nematic liquid crystal defect layer. In this study we report on output light polarization and/or intensity dynamics that depends on the initial molecular ordering and incident light wavelength and intensity.

Pattern forming instability induced by light in pure and dye-doped nematic liquid crystals

We study theoretically the instabilities induced by a linearly polarized ordinary light wave incident at a small oblique angle on a thin layer of homeotropically oriented nematic liquid crystal with special emphasis on the dye-doped case. The spatially periodic Hopf bifurcation that occurs as the secondary instability after the stationary Freedericksz transition is analyzed.

Nonlinear Effects in CW Mode-Locked Solid-State Lasers with Semiconductor Saturable Absorbers

The influence of nonlinear properties of semiconductor saturable absorbers on ultrashort pulse generation was investigated. It was shown, that linewidth enhancement, quadratic and linear ac Stark effect contribute essentially to the mode locking in cw solid-state lasers, that can increase the pulse stability, decrease pulse duration and reduce the mode locking threshold

Automodulations in Kerr-lens Modelocked Solid-State Lasers

Nonstationary pulse regimes associated with self modulation of a Kerr-lens modelocked Ti:sapphire laser have been studied experimentally and theoretically. Such laser regimes occur at an intracavity group delay dispersion that is smaller or larger than what is required for stable modelocking and exhibit modulation in pulse amplitude and spectra at frequencies of several hundred kHz. Stabilization of such modulations, leading to an increase in the pulse peak power by a factor of ten, were accomplished by weakly modulating the pump laser with the self-modulation frequency. The main experimental observations can be explained with a round trip model of the fs laser taking into account gain saturation, Kerr lensing, and second- and third-order dispersion.
