Multiwavelength quasi-periodic variability of the blazar Ton 599

During the last 40-50 years, the TeV blazar Ton 599 has systematically experienced major outbursts detected in a wide wavelength range from radio to $γ$-rays. In this work, we present an analysis of Ton 599 quasi-periodic variability across multiple wavelengths using an observing baseline from 1983 to 2025. The $γ$-ray, optical, and radio emissions are found to be highly correlated with time lags $\sim0$-$360$ days, which indicates that they are triggered by the same population of particles. Using the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform, we revealed several periodic components with characteristic periods of 1.4, 1.7, 2.3, 6.5, and 7.5 yrs. The result is consistent with the detection of periodic components in the 1997-2011 light curves, which means that we observe the same mechanism causing long-term periodic variability. A model of a binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) with a precessing jet, applied to the radio light curves of Ton 599, yields frequency-dependent best-fitting parameters with orbital periods ranging from $\sim$1.2 to 1.7 yrs and precession periods from $\sim$5.8 to 7.7 yrs. This result implies the existence of an SMBH system modulating emission through both the orbiting and jet precession effects, with differing observed periods possibly reflecting frequency-dependent emission regions along a structured, stratified jet. Nonetheless, the short-term periodicity and exceptionally strong flares likely arise from internal jet shocks, which aligns with typical blazar behavior. We suggest that the multiband quasi-periodicity of Ton 599 is reasonably described by a combination of geometric effects (orbital motion and precession) and stochastic processes.

Neural networks in the search for fast radio bursts with RATAN-600

We present a technique to search for fast radio bursts in records obtained with broadband radiometers having few radio channels. The technique is applied to the RATAN-600 surveys carried out at its Western Sector since the year 2017. A 1D convolutional neural network for multichannel time series classification is developed based on the EfficientNet family of models. The procedure to generate synthetic FRB signals needed for the training dataset is described. We implement a two-stage cascade scheme to effectively suppress the rate of false positive detections. Evaluation of the trained model is provided based on the synthetic events and the giant pulse of the Crab Pulsar.

Radio and Optical Properties of the blazar PKS 1614+051 at z=3.21

We present a study of the radio and optical properties of the high-frequency peaker (HFP) blazar PKS 1614+051 at $z=3.21$ based on the data covering the time period of 1997-2024. The radio data are represented by the almost instantaneous 1-22 GHz measurements from the SAO RAS RATAN-600 radio telescope, the 5 and 8 GHz data from the IAA RAS RT-32 telescopes, and the 37 GHz data from the RT-22 telescope of CrAO RAS. The optical measurements in the $R$ band were collected with the SAO RAS 1-m Zeiss-1000 and 0.5-m AS-500/2 telescopes and the ZTF archive data. We have found low overall variability indices (0.1-0.2) and a spectral peak around 4.6 GHz, which is stable during the long-term period of monitoring. An analysis of the radio light curves reveals significant time delays (0.6 to 6.4 years) between the radio frequencies along with variability timescales ranging from 0.2 to 1.8 years in the source's rest frame, which is similar to the blazars at lower redshifts. Spectral modeling suggests the presence of both synchrotron-self absorption (SSA) and free-free absorption (FFA) processes. Based on the SSA model, we provide estimates of the magnetic field strength, which peaks at $\sim\!30$ mG. A spectroscopic study with the BTA SCORPIO-I spectrograph has found signs of the regular motion of a neutral hydrogen envelope around the blazar center, which confirms the presence of enough gaseous matter to form an external FFA screen. The results highlight the importance of multiwavelength and long-term monitoring to understand the physical mechanisms driving the variability in high-redshift blazars.

HD 34736: An intensely magnetised double-lined spectroscopic binary with rapidly-rotating chemically peculiar B-type components

We report the results of a comprehensive study of the spectroscopic binary (SB2) system HD 34736 hosting two chemically peculiar (CP) late B-type stars. Using new and archival observational data, we characterise the system and its components, including their rotation and magnetic fields. Fitting of the radial velocities yields $P_\mathrm{orb}=83.\!^\mathrm{d}219(3)$ and $e=0.8103(3)$. The primary component is a CP He-wk star with $T_{\mathrm{eff}A}=13000\pm500$ K and $\upsilon_\mathrm{e}\sin i\;=75\pm3$ km/s, while the secondary exhibits variability of Mg and Si lines, and has $T_{\mathrm{eff}B}=11500\pm1000$ K and $\upsilon_\mathrm{e}\sin i=110$-180 km/s. TESS and KELT photometry reveal clear variability of the primary component with a rotational period $P_{\mathrm{rot}A}=1.\!^\mathrm{d}279\,988\,5(11)$, which is lengthening at a rate of $1.26(6)$ s/yr. For the secondary, $P_{\mathrm{rot}B}=0.\!^\mathrm{d}522\,693\,8(5)$, reducing at a rate of $-0.14(3)$ s/yr. The longitudinal component $\langle B_\mathrm{z}\rangle$ of the primary's strongly asymmetric global magnetic field varies from $-6$ to +5 kG. Weak spectropolarimetric evidence of a magnetic field is found for the secondary star. The observed X-ray and radio emission of HD 34736 may equally be linked to a suspected T Tau-like companion or magnetospheric emission from the principal components. Given the presence of a possible third magnetically active body, one can propose that the magnetic characteristics of the protostellar environment may be connected to the formation of such systems.

Multiwavelength variability of the blazar AO 0235+164

We present a study of the multiwavelength (MW) variability of the blazar AO 0235+164 based on the radio-to-$γ$-ray data covering a long time period from 1997 to 2023. The radio data are represented by the 1-22 GHz measurements from the RATAN-600 radio telescope, the 5 and 8 GHz data from the RT-32 telescopes, and the 37 GHz data from the RT-22 telescope. The optical measurements in the $R$-band were collected with the 1-m Zeiss-1000 and 0.5-m AS-500/2 telescopes. Additionally we used the archive data at 230~GHz from the SMA and the $γ$-ray data in the 0.1-100 GeV band from the Fermi-LAT point source 4FGL-DR2 catalogue. The variability properties during four epochs containing major flares and one epoch of relatively low activity were analysed. A significant correlation ($\geq\!2σ$) between the radio, optical, and $γ$-ray bands is found for all these periods with time delays from 0 to 1.7 yrs. The relation between time delay and frequency is described by a linear law with a negative slope of -10 day/GHz. The discovered properties of MW variability for the low activity period and for flaring states suggest that the mechanisms dominating the radio-$γ$-ray variations are not substantially different. The detected quasi-periodic oscillations of about 6 and 2 years are tentative, as the time span of the observations includes fewer than 4 full cycles for the radio and optical data and only about 3 cycles for the Fermi-LAT data. The physical parameters of the radio jet were obtained using the Hedgehog model applied to the average radio spectrum of AO 0235+164 in the range 0.1-300 GHz. The effectiveness of replacing electrons with protons in the synchrotron radio emission of relativistic jets is shown for describing the nature of blazars and the generation of high energy neutrinos.

Cluster analysis of the Roma-BZCAT blazars

Based on the collected multiwavelength data, namely in the radio (NVSS, FIRST, RATAN-600), IR (WISE), optical (Pan-STARRS), UV (GALEX), and X-ray (ROSAT, Swift-XRT) ranges, we have performed a cluster analysis for the blazars of the Roma-BZCAT catalog. Using two machine learning methods, namely a combination of PCA with k-means clustering and Kohonen's self-organizing maps, we have constructed an independent classification of the blazars (five classes) and compared the classes with the known Roma-BZCAT classification (FSRQs, BL Lacs, galaxy-dominated BL Lacs, and blazars of an uncertain type) as well as with the high synchrotron peaked blazars (HSP) from the 3HSP catalog and blazars from the TeVCat catalog. The obtained groups demonstrate concordance with the BL Lac/FSRQ classification along with a continuous character of the change in the properties. The group of HSP blazars stands out against the overall distribution. We examine the characteristics of the five groups and demonstrate distinctions in their spectral energy distribution shapes. The effectiveness of the clustering technique for objective analysis of multiparametric arrays of experimental data is demonstrated.

Magnetic Fields of CP Stars in the OrionOB1 Association. IV. Stars of Subgroup 1b

The paper presents magnetic field measurements for 15 chemically peculiar (CP) stars of subgroup~1b in the OrionOB1 association. We have found that the proportion of stars with strong magnetic fields among these 15 CP stars is almost twice as large as in subgroup 1a. Along with this, the age of subgroup 1b is estimated as 2 Myr, and the age of subgroup~1a is in the order of 10 Myr. The average root-mean-square magnetic field Be for stars in subgroup 1b is 2.3 times higher than that for stars in subgroup 1a. The conclusions obtained fall within the concept of the fossil origin of large-scale magnetic fields in B and A stars, but the rate of field weakening with age appears anomalously high. We present our results as an important observational test for calibrating the theory of stellar magnetic field formation and evolution.

HD 965: An extremely peculiar A star with an extremely long rotation period

Context. One of the keys to understanding the origin of the Ap stars and their significance in the general context of stellar astrophysics is the consideration of the most extreme properties displayed by some of them. In that context, HD 965 is particularly interesting, as it combines some of the most pronounced chemical peculiarities with one of the longest rotation periods known. Aims. We characterise the variations of the magnetic field of the Ap star HD 965 and derive constraints about its structure. Methods. We combine published measurements of the mean longitudinal field of HD 965 with new determinations of this field moment from circular spectropolarimetry obtained at the 6-m telescope BTA of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. For the mean magnetic field modulus , literature data are complemented by the analysis of ESO archive spectra. Results. We present the first determination of the rotation period of HD 965, P = (16.5+/-0.5) y. HD 965 is only the third Ap star with a period longer than 10 years for which magnetic field measurements have been obtained over more than a full cycle. The variation curve of is well approximated by a cosine wave. does not show any significant variation. The observed behaviour of these field moments is well represented by a simple model consisting of the superposition of collinear dipole, quadrupole and octupole. The distribution of neodymium over the surface of HD 965 is highly non-uniform. The element appears concentrated around the magnetic poles, especially the negative one. Conclusions. The shape of the longitudinal magnetic variation curve of HD 965 indicates that its magnetic field is essentially symmetric about an axis passing through the centre of the star. Overall, as far as its magnetic field is concerned, HD 965 appears similar to the bulk of the long-period Ap stars.

Binary Stars in the Orion OB1 Association, Subgroup $\textit{a}$

A detailed spectroscopic survey of chemically peculiar (CP) stars in the Orion OB1 association is the most comprehensive observational program in the field of stellar magnetism that has been carried out at SAO so far. As at the end of 2018, we have completed surveying CP stars in the oldest subgroup $\textit{a}$ of the association. In this paper, we give a short overview of CP members of the subgroup showing both direct and indirect signatures of multiplicity. Among the overall 11 stars which had been classified as peculiar, we found several good candidates for further detailed study.

The variation of the magnetic field of the Ap star HD~50169 over its 29 year rotation period

Context. The Ap stars that rotate extremely slowly, with periods of decades to centuries, represent one of the keys to the understanding of the processes leading to the differentiation of stellar rotation. Aims. We characterise the variations of the magnetic field of the Ap star HD 50169 and derive constraints about its structure. Methods. We combine published measurements of the mean longitudinal field of HD 50169 with new determinations of this field moment from circular spectropolarimetry obtained at the 6-m telescope BTA of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. For the mean magnetic field modulus , literature data are complemented by the analysis of ESO spectra, both newly acquired and from the archive. Radial velocities are also obtained from these spectra. Results. We present the first determination of the rotation period of HD 50169, Prot = (29.04+/-0.82) y. HD 50169 is currently the longest-period Ap star for which magnetic field measurements have been obtained over more than a full cycle. The variation curves of both and have a significant degree of anharmonicity, and there is a definite phase shift between their respective extrema. We confirm that HD 50169 is a wide spectroscopic binary, refine its orbital elements, and suggest that the secondary is probably a dwarf star of spectral type M. Conclusions. The shapes and mutual phase shifts of the derived magnetic variation curves unquestionably indicate that the magnetic field of HD 50169 is not symmetric about an axis passing through its centre. Overall, HD 50169 appears similar to the bulk of the long-period Ap stars.

Results of Magnetic Field Measurements Performed with the 6-m Telescope. IV. Observations in 2010

We present the results of measurements of magnetic fields, radial velocities and rotation velocities for 92 objects, mainly main-sequence chemically peculiar stars. Observations were performed at the 6-m BTA telescope using Main Stellar Spectrograph with a Zeeman analyzer. In 2010, twelve new magnetic stars were discovered: HD\,17330, HD\,29762, HD\,49884, HD\,54824, HD\,89069, HD\,96003, HD\,113894, HD\,118054, HD\,135679, HD\,138633, HD\,138777, BD\,+53.1183. The presence of a field is suspected in HD\,16705, HD\,35379 and HD\,35881. Observations of standard stars without a magnetic field confirm the absence of systematic errors which can introduce distortions into the measurements of longitudinal field. The paper gives comments on the results of investigation of each star.

HD 18078: A very slowly rotating Ap star with an unusual magnetic field structure

Context. The existence of a significant population of Ap stars with very long rotation periods (up to several hundred years) has progressively emerged over the past two decades. However, only lower limits of the periods are known for most of them because their variations have not yet been observed over a sufficient timebase. Aims. We determine the rotation period of the slowly rotating Ap star HD 18078 and we derive constraints on the geometrical structure of its magnetic field. Methods. We combine measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus obtained from 1990 to 1997 with determinations of the mean longitudinal magnetic field spanning the 1999-2007 time interval to derive an unambiguous value of the rotation period. We show that this value is consistent with photometric variations recorded in the Stroemgren uvby photometric system between 1995 and 2004. We fit the variations of the two above-mentioned field moments with a simple model to constrain the magnetic structure. Results. The rotation period of HD 18078 is (1358 +/- 12) d. The geometrical structure of its magnetic field is consistent to first order with a colinear multipole model whose axis is offset from the centre of the star. Conclusions. HD 18078 is only the fifth Ap star with a rotation period longer than 1000 days for which the exact value of that period (as opposed to a lower limit) could be determined. The strong anharmonicity of the variations of its mean longitudinal magnetic field and the shift between their extrema and those of the mean magnetic field modulus are exceptional and indicative of a very unusual magnetic structure.

On the Discovery of Strong Magnetic Field in HD 34736 Binary System

We present the results of a study of the star HD 34736. The spectropolarimetric observations carried out at the 6-m telescope showed the presence of a strong variable longitudinal magnetic field, exceeding -4500 G. The analysis of the HIPPARCOS photometry gives a set of possible periods of the brightness variability of the star, of which 0.3603 days is preferred. The variable radial velocity of spectral lines of the star and some signatures of lines of at least one other component show that HD 34736 is a double short-period system. Modeling of the spectra allowed us to estimate the effective temperature $T_{eff}$ of the stars (13 700 and 11 500 K) and their projected rotational velocities $v\sin i$ (73 and $\geq90$ km s$^{-1}$). The analysis of all the available information about the star allows us to hypothesize that the object of study is a close, possibly interacting binary system.

Abnormal lithium abundance in several Ap-Bp stars

Using observations of rapidly rotating roAp star HD 12098, obtained with 6m telescope of SAO RAS in 2005-2008 in nine rotational phases (0.001-0.817), and code V. Tsymbal ROTATE we identified 3 lithium spots on the surface of star, one of them coincided with the position of one magnetic pole and two others are located near the other pole, symmetrically with respect to it. Perhaps magnetic field of the star has a more complex structure than the dipole (Shavrina 2008). Lithium abundance in the spots is greater than cosmic one. It can be explained by diffusion of lithium in the presence of a magnetic field or by production of lithium in the reactions of "spallation" on the surface of star near the magnetic poles (see, for example, Goriely 2007). Enhanced lithium abundances was also determined for other two slowly rotating Ap stars HR 465 and HD 965. The analysis is performed using a synthetic spectrum method taking into account magnetic splitting of lines by the SYNTHM code of Khan (2004).

The magnetic variability of the star HD 14437

The magnetic field of the CP star HD 14437 was discovered by Glagolevskij et al. (1985) using the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory. No polarity changes have been found during 2 years of observations. A very long (> 3-4 years) period of rotation was proposed to explain the measurements. To check this hypothesis, we made a new series of magnetic field observations for this star 10 years later with the 6-m telescope. The polarity of the longitudinal magnetic field is still negative and has not shown any change during more than 10 years of observations. We found the most probable periods to be several days. It means that we have observed a star where the magnetic and rotation axes are inclined at a small angle, and the negative pole is not far from the line of sight.
