Groups acting acylindrically on hyperbolic spaces

The goal of this article is to survey some recent developments in the study of groups acting on hyperbolic spaces. We focus on the class of acylindrically hyperbolic groups; it is broad enough to include many examples of interest, yet a significant part of the theory of hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups can be generalized in this context. In particular, we discuss group theoretic Dehn filling and small cancellation theory in acylindrically hyperbolic groups. Many results discussed here rely on the new generalization of relative hyperbolicity based on the notion of a hyperbolically embedded subgroup.

Erratum to the paper "Acylindrical hyperbolicity of groups acting on trees"

In our paper arXiv:1310.6289, we stated that acylindrical hyperbolicity of a group is invariant under commensurability up to finite kernels. Unfortunately, the proof of this fact contained a gap. The goal of this erratum is to point out the gap and to correct the statements and proofs of results of arXiv:1310.6289 and the subsequent paper arXiv:1501.03066 affected by it.

Turbulent stagnation in a z-pinch plasma

The ion kinetic energy in a stagnating plasma was previously determined by Kroupp et al. (Kroupp et al., 2011), from Doppler-dominated lineshapes augmented by measurements of plasma properties and assuming a uniform-plasma model. Notably, the energy was found to be dominantly stored in hydrodynamic flow. Here, we advance a new description of this stagnation as supersonically turbulent. Such turbulence implies a non-uniform density distribution. We demonstrate how to re-analyze the spectroscopic data consistent with the turbulent picture, and show this leads to better concordance of the overconstrained spectroscopic measurements, while also substantially lowering the inferred mean density.

On acylindrical hyperbolicity of groups with positive first $\ell^2$-Betti number

We prove that every finitely presented group with positive first $\ell^2$-Betti number that virtually surjects onto $\mathbb Z$ is acylindrically hyperbolic. In particular, this implies acylindrical hyperbolicity of finitely presented residually finite groups with positive first $\ell^2$-Betti number as well as groups of deficiency at least $2$.

Conjugacy growth of finitely generated groups

We show that every non-decreasing function $f\colon \mathbb N\to \mathbb N$ bounded from above by $a^n$ for some $a\ge 1$ can be realized (up to a natural equivalence) as the conjugacy growth function of a finitely generated group. We also construct a finitely generated group $G$ and a subgroup $H\le G$ of index 2 such that $H$ has only 2 conjugacy classes while the conjugacy growth of $G$ is exponential. In particular, conjugacy growth is not a quasi-isometry invariant.

Weakly amenable groups

In this paper, a group is called weakly amenable if its left regular representation is not uniformly isolated from the trivial representation. First examples of finitely generated non-amenable weakly amenable groups are constructed.

Acylindrically hyperbolic groups

We say that a group $G$ is acylindrically hyperbolic if it admits a non-elementary acylindrical action on a hyperbolic space. We prove that the class of acylindrically hyperbolic groups coincides with many other classes studied in the literature, e.g., the class $C_{geom}$ introduced by Hamenstadt, the class of groups admitting a non-elementary weakly properly discontinuous action on a hyperbolic space in the sense of Bestvina and Fujiwara, and the class of groups with hyperbolically embedded subgroups studied by Dahmani, Guirardel, and the author. We also record some basic results about acylindrically hyperbolic groups for future use.

Transitivity degrees of countable groups and acylindrical hyperbolicity

We prove that every countable acylindrically hyperbolic group admits a highly transitive action with finite kernel. This theorem uniformly generalizes many previously known results and allows us to answer a question of Garion and Glassner on the existence of highly transitive faithful actions of mapping class groups. It also implies that in various geometric and algebraic settings, the transitivity degree of an infinite group can only take two values, namely $1$ and $\infty$. Here by transitivity degree of a group we mean the supremum of transitivity degrees of its faithful permutation representations. Further, for any countable group $G$ admitting a highly transitive faithful action, we prove the following dichotomy: Either $G$ contains a normal subgroup isomorphic to the infinite alternating group or $G$ resembles a free product from the model theoretic point of view. We apply this theorem to obtain new results about universal theory and mixed identities of acylindrically hyperbolic groups. Finally, we discuss some open problems.

Hyperbolically embedded subgroups and rotating families in groups acting on hyperbolic spaces

We introduce and study the notions of hyperbolically embedded and very rotating families of subgroups. The former notion can be thought of as a generalization of the peripheral structure of a relatively hyperbolic group, while the later one provides a natural framework for developing a geometric version of small cancellation theory. Examples of such families naturally occur in groups acting on hyperbolic spaces including hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups, $Out(F_n)$, and the Cremona group. Other examples can be found among groups acting geometrically on $CAT(0)$ spaces, fundamental groups of graphs of groups, etc. We obtain a number of general results about rotating families and hyperbolically embedded subgroups; although our technique applies to a wide class of groups, it is capable of producing new results even for well-studied particular classes. For instance, we solve two open problems about mapping class groups, and obtain some results which are new even for relatively hyperbolic groups.

A quasi-isometric embedding theorem for groups

We show that every group $H$ of at most exponential growth with respect to some left invariant metric admits a bi-Lipschitz embedding into a finitely generated group $G$ such that $G$ is amenable (respectively, solvable, satisfies a non-trivial identity, elementary amenable, of finite decomposition complexity, etc.) whenever $H$ is. We also discuss some applications to compression functions of Lipschitz embeddings into uniformly convex Banach spaces, Følner functions, and elementary classes of amenable groups.

Induced quasi-cocycles on groups with hyperbolically embedded subgroups

Let G be a group, H a hyperbolically embedded subgroup of G, V a normed G-module, U an H-invariant submodule of V. We propose a general construction which allows to extend 1-quasi-cocycles on H with values in U to 1-quasi-cocycles on G with values in V. As an application, we show that every group G with a non-degenerate hyperbolically embedded subgroup has dim H^2_b (G, l^p(G))=\infty for p\in [1, \infty). This covers many previously known results in a uniform way. Applying our extension to quasimorphisms and using Bavard duality, we also show that hyperbolically embedded subgroups are undistorted with respect to the stable commutator length.

EUV magnetic-dipole lines from highly-charged high-Z ions with an open 3d shell

The electron beam ion trap (EBIT) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology was used to produce highly-charged ions of hafnium, tantalum and gold with an open 3d shell. The extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) spectra from these ions were recorded with a flat-field grazing-incidence spectrometer in the wavelength range of 4.5 nm to 25 nm. A total of 133 new spectral lines, primarily due to magnetic-dipole transitions within the ground-state $3d^n$ configurations of the Co-like to K-like ions, were identified by comparing energy-dependent experimental spectra with a detailed collisional-radiative modeling of the EBIT plasma.

Normal generation and $\ell^2$-betti numbers of groups

The \emph{normal rank} of a group is the minimal number of elements whose normal closure coincides with the group. We study the relation between the normal rank of a group and its first $\ell^2$-Betti number and conjecture that inequality $β_1^{(2)}(G)$ does not exceed normal rank minus 1 for torsion free groups. The conjecture is proved for limits of left-orderable amenable groups. On the other hand, for every $n\ge 2$ and every $\e>0$, we give an example of a simple group $Q$ (with torsion) such that $β_1^{(2)}(Q) \geq n-1-ε$. These groups also provide examples of simple groups of rank exactly $n$ for every $n\ge 2$; existence of such examples for $n> 3$ was unknown until now.

Spectroscopy of diagnostically-important magnetic-dipole lines in highly-charged 3d$^n$ ions of tungsten

An electron beam ion trap (EBIT) is used to measure extreme ultraviolet spectra between 10 nm and 25 nm from highly-charged ions of tungsten with an open 3d shell (W XLVIII through W LVI). We found that almost all strong lines are due to the forbidden magnetic-dipole (M1) transitions within $3d^n$ ground configurations. A total of 37 spectral lines are identified for the first time using detailed collisional-radiative (CR) modeling of the EBIT spectra. A new level-merging scheme for compactification of rate equations is described. The CR simulations for Maxwellian plasmas show that several line ratios involving these M1 lines can be used to reliably diagnose temperature and density in hot fusion devices.

Approximating the first $L^2$-betti number of residually finite groups

We show that the first $L^2$-betti number of a finitely generated residually finite group can be estimated from below by using ordinary first betti numbers of finite index normal subgroups. As an application we construct a finitely generated infinite residually finite torsion group with positive first $L^2$-betti number.

Algorithmically finite groups

We call a group $G$ {\it algorithmically finite} if no algorithm can produce an infinite set of pairwise distinct elements of $G$. We construct examples of recursively presented infinite algorithmically finite groups and study their properties. For instance, we show that the Equality Problem is decidable in our groups only on strongly (exponentially) negligible sets of inputs.

Normal automorphisms of relatively hyperbolic groups

An automorphism $α$ of a group $G$ is normal if it fixes every normal subgroup of $G$ setwise. We give an algebraic description of normal automorphisms of relatively hyperbolic groups. In particular, we prove that for any relatively hyperbolic group $G$, $Inn(G)$ has finite index in the subgroup $Aut_n(G)$ of normal automorphisms. If, in addition, $G$ is non-elementary and has no non-trivial finite normal subgroups, then $Aut_n(G)=Inn(G)$. As an application, we show that $Out(G)$ is residually finite for every finitely generated residually finite group $G$ with more than one end.

Rank gradient and torsion groups

We construct first examples of infinite finitely generated residually finite torsion groups with positive rank gradient. In particular, these groups are non-amenable. Some applications to problems about cost and $L^2$-Betti numbers are discussed.
