Fundamental Physics at the Intensity Frontier

The Proceedings of the 2011 workshop on Fundamental Physics at the Intensity Frontier. Science opportunities at the intensity frontier are identified and described in the areas of heavy quarks, charged leptons, neutrinos, proton decay, new light weakly-coupled particles, and nucleons, nuclei, and atoms.

Flavour physics of leptons and dipole moments

This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavour structure of fundamental particles. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of the available data, setting constraints on explicit models beyond the Standard Model, presenting benchmarks for the discovery potential of forthcoming measurements both at the LHC and at low energy, and exploring options for possible future experiments.

Measurement method for the nuclear anapole moment of laser trapped alkali atoms

Weak interactions within a nucleus generate a nuclear spin dependent parity violating electromagnetic moment; the anapole moment. In heavy nuclei, the anapole moment is the dominant contribution to spin-dependent atomic parity violation. We analyze a method to measure the nuclear anapole moment through the electric dipole transition it induces between hyperfine states of the ground level. The method requires tight confinement of the atoms to position them at the anti-node of a standing wave driving the anapole-induced E1 transiton. We explore the necessary limits in the number of atoms, excitation fields, trap type, interrogation method, and systematic tests necessary for such measurements in francium, the heaviest alkali.

Experimental determination of the $6s^2 ^1S_0 -> 5d6s ^3 D_1$ magnetic-dipole transition amplitude in atomic ytterbium

We report on a measurement of the highly forbidden $6s^2 ^1S_0 \to 5d6s ^3 D_1$ magnetic-dipole transition in atomic ytterbium using the Stark-interference technique. This amplitude is important in interpreting a future parity nonconservation experiment that exploits the same transition. We find $| < 5d6s ^3 D_1 | M1 | 6s^2 ^1S_0 > | ~ = ~ 1.33(6)_{Stat}(20)_β \times 10^{-4} μ_0$, where the larger uncertainty comes from the previously measured vector transition polarizability $β$. The $M1$ amplitude is small and should not limit the precision of the parity nonconservation experiment.
