Density dependent hadronic models and the relation between neutron stars and neutron skin thickness

In the present work we investigate the main differences in the lead neutron skin thickness, binding energy, surface energy and density profiles obtained with two different density dependent relativistic hadronic models, within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We show that the asymmetry parameter for low momentum transfer polarized electron scattering is not sensitive to the model parametrization differences.

Equation of State for supernova explosion simulations

In this work we present a detailed explanation of the construction of an appropriate equation of state (EoS) for nuclear astrophysics. We use a relativistic model in order to obtain an EoS for neutrally charged matter that extends from very low to high densities, from zero temperature to 100 MeV with proton fractions ranging from 0 (no protons) to 0.6 (asymmetric matter with proton excess). For the achievement of complete convergence, the Sommerfeld approximation is used at low temperatures and the Boltzman distribution for relativistic particles is used in the calculation of the electron properties at very low densities. Photons are also incorporated as blackbody radiation. An extension of this EoS is also presented with the inclusion of strangeness by taking into account the sigma minus hyperon only. Strangeness fractions range from 0.02 to 0.3.

Pair emission from bare magnetized strange stars

The dominant emission from bare strange stars is thought to be electron-positron pairs, produced through spontaneous pair creation (SPC) in a surface layer of electrons tied to the star by a superstrong electric field. The positrons escape freely, but the electrons are directed towards the star and quickly fill all available states, such that their degeneracy suppresses further SPC. An electron must be reflected and gain energy in order to escape, along with the positron. Each escaping electron leaves a hole that is immediately filled by another electron through SPC. We discuss the collisional processes that produce escaping electrons. When the Landau quantization of the motion perpendicular to the magnetic field is taken into account, electron-electron collisions can lead to an escaping electron only through a multi-stage process involving higher Landau levels. Although the available estimates of the collision rate are deficient in several ways, it appears that the rate is too low for electron-electron collisions to be effective. A simple kinetic model for electron-quark collisions leads to an estimate of the rate of pair production that is analogous to thermionic emission, but the work function is poorly determined.

Collective modes in relativistic npe matter at finite temperature

Isospin and density waves in neutral neutron-proton-electron (npe) matter are studied within a relativistic mean-field hadron model at finite temperature with the inclusion of the electromagnetic field. The dispersion relation is calculated and the collective modes are obtained. The unstable modes are discussed and the spinodals, which separate the stable from the unstable regions, are shown for different values of the momentum transfer at various temperatures. The critical temperatures are compared with the ones obtained in a system without electrons. The largest critical temperature, 12.39 MeV, occurs for a proton fraction y_p=0.47. For y_p=0.3 we get $T_{cr}$ =5 MeV and for y_p>0.495 $T_cr\lesssim 8$ MeV. It is shown that at finite temperature the distillation effect in asymmetric matter is not so efficient and that electron effects are particularly important for small momentum transfers.

Pentaquarks in the medium in the quark-meson coupling model

We calculate the properties of the pentaquarks $Θ^+$ and $Ξ^{--,0}$ in symmetric nuclear matter using the quark meson coupling model (QMC). The stability of the $Θ^+$ in the medium with respect to the channel $Θ^+\to NK^+$ is discussed.

Quark stars within relativistic models

Lately, it has been suggested that strange (quark) stars can be responsible for glitches and other observational features of pulsars. Some discussions on whether quark stars, if really exist, are bare or crusted are also a source of controversy in the recent literature. In the present work we use the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, known to incorporate chiral symmetry, necessarily present in the QCD formalism, in order to describe quark star properties. We compare our results for the stars and the features of the model with the much simpler model normally used in the description of strange stars, namely the MIT bag model. We also investigate the differences in the stellar properties which arise due to the presence of the crust. We show that the NJL model produces results which are somewhat different as compared with the MIT model.

Density Dependent Parametrization Models: Formalism and Applications

In this work we derive a formalism to incorporate asymmetry and temperature effects in the Brown-Rho (BR) scaled lagrangian model in a mean field theory. The lagrangian density discussed in this work requires less parameters than the usual models with density dependent couplings. We also present the formalism with the inclusion of the eight lightest baryons, two lightest leptons, beta equilibrium and charge neutrality in order to apply the BR scaled model to the study of neutron stars. The results are again compared with the ones obtained from another density dependent parametrization model. The role played by the rearrangement term at T=0 for nuclear or neutron star matter and at finite temperature is investigated. The BR scaled model is shown to be a good tool in studies involving density dependent effective masses and in astrophysics applications.

Kaon condensation in the quark-meson coupling model and compact stars

The properties of neutron stars constituted of a crust of hadrons and an internal part of hadrons and kaon condensate are calculated within the quark-meson-coupling model. We have considered stars with nucleons only in the hadron phase and also stars with hyperons as well. The results are compared with the ones obtained from the non-linear Walecka model for the hadronic phase.

Relativistic Equation of state with short range correlations

Short range correlations are introduced using unitary correlation method in a relativistic approach to the equation of state of the infinite nuclear matter in the framework of the Hartree-Fock approximation. The effect of the correlations in the ground state properties of the nuclear matter is studied.

Strange star equations of state revisited

Motivated by recent suggestions that strange stars can be responsible for glitches and other observational features of pulsar, we review some possible equations of state and their implications for models of neutron, hybrid and strange stars. We consider the MIT bag model and also strange matter in the color-flavored-locked phase. The central energy densities for strange stars are higher than the central densities of ordinary neutron stars. Strange stars are bound by the strong force and so can also rotate much faster than neutron stars. These results are only weakly dependent on the model used for the quark matter. If just one of the existing mass to radius ratio constraint is valid, most neutron stars equations of state are ruled out, but all the strange stars equations of state presented in this work remain consistent with the constraint.

Aspects of short range correlations in a relativistic model

In the present work short range correlations are introduced for the first time in a relativistic approach to the equation of state of the infinite nuclear matter in the framework of the Hartree-Fock approximation using an effective Hamiltonian derived from the $σ-ω$ Walecka model. The unitary correlation method is used to introduce short range correlations. The effect of the correlations in the ground state properties of the nuclear matter is discussed.

Instabilities in asymmetric nuclear matter

The existence of phase transitions from liquid to gas phases in asymmetric nuclear matter (ANM) is related with the instability regions which are limited by the spinodals. In this work we investigate the instabilities in ANM described within relativistic mean field hadron models, both with constant and density dependent couplings at zero and finite temperatures. In calculating the proton and neutron chemical potentials we have used an expansion in terms of Bessel functions that is convenient at low densities. The role of the isovector scalar $δ$-meson is also investigated in the framework of relativistic mean field models and density dependent hadronic models. It is shown that the main differences occur at finite temperature and large isospin asymmetry close to the boundary of the instability regions.

Stellar matter in the Quark-Meson-Coupling Model with neutrino trapping

The properties of hybrid stars formed by hadronic and quark matter in $β$-equilibrium are described by appropriate equations of state (EoS) in the framework of the quark meson coupling (QMC) model. In the present work we include the possibility of trapped neutrinos in the equation of state and obtain the properties of the related hybrid stars. We use the quark meson coupling model for the hadron matter and two possibilities for the quark matter phase, namely, the unpaired quark phase and the color-flavor locked phase. The differences are discussed and a comparison with other relativistic EoS is done.

Warm stellar matter with neutrino trapping

The properties of hybrid stars formed by hadronic and quark matter in beta-equilibrium at fixed entropies are described by appropriate equations of state (EOS) in the framework of relativistic mean-field theory. In this work we include the possibility of neutrino trapped EOS and compare the star properties with the ones obtained after deleptonization, when neutrinos have already diffused out. We use the nonlinear Walecka model for the hadron matter with two different sets for the hyperon couplings and the MIT Bag and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models for the quark matter. The phase transition to a deconfined quark phase is investigated. Depending on the model and the parameter set used, the mixed phase may or may not exist in the EOS at high densities. The star properties are calculated for each equation of state. The maximum mass stellar configurations obtained within the NJL have larger masses than the ones obtained within the Bag model. The Bag model predicts a mixed phase in the interior of the most massive stable stars while, depending on the hyperon couplings, the NJL model predicts a mixed phase or pure quark matter. Comparing with neutrino free stars, the maximum allowed baryonic masses for protoneutron stars are $\sim 0.4 M_\odot$ larger for the Bag model and $\sim 0.1 M_\odot$ larger for the NJL model when neutrino trapping is imposed.

On the density dependent hadron field theory at finite temperature and its thermodynamical consistency

In this work we study in a formal way the density dependent hadron field theory at finite temperature for nuclear matter. The thermodynamical potential and related quantities, as energy density and pressure are derived in two different ways. We first obtain the thermodynamical potential from the grand partition function, where the Hamiltonian depends on the density operator and is truncated at first order. We then reobtain the thermodynamical potential by calculating explicitly the energy density in a Thomas-Fermi approximation and considering the entropy of a fermi gas. The distribution functions for particles and antiparticles are the output of the minimization of the thermodynamical potential. It is shown that in the mean field theory the thermodynamical consistency is achieved. The connection with effective chiral lagrangians with Brown-Rho scaling is discussed.

Hybrid stars in the quark-meson coupling model with superconducting quark matter

The phase transition to a deconfined phase is studied and the consequences in the formation of neutron stars are investigated. We use the quark-meson-coupling model for the hadron matter and the MIT Bag model for the quark matter in order to build the appropriate equations of state for the hybrid stars. The properties of the stars are then calculated. The differences between unpaired and color-flavor locked quark matter are discussed.

Warm stellar matter with deconfinement: application to compact stars

We investigate the properties of mixed stars formed by hadronic and quark matter in $β$-equilibrium described by appropriate equations of state (EOS) in the framework of relativistic mean-field theory. We use the non- linear Walecka model for the hadron matter and the MIT Bag and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models for the quark matter. The phase transition to a deconfined quark phase is investigated. In particular, we study the dependence of the onset of a mixed phase and a pure quark phase on the hyperon couplings, quark model and properties of the hadronic model. We calculate the strangeness fraction with baryonic density for the different EOS. With the NJL model the strangeness content in the mixed phase decreases. The calculations were performed for T=0 and for finite temperatures in order to describe neutron and proto-neutron stars. The star properties are discussed. Both the Bag model and the NJL model predict a mixed phase in the interior of the star. Maximum allowed masses for proto-neutron stars are larger for the NJL model ($\sim 1.9$ M$_{\bigodot}$) than for the Bag model ($\sim 1.6$ M$_{\bigodot}$).

Warm asymmetric matter in the Quark Meson Coupling Model

In this work we study the warm equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter in the quark meson coupling model which incorporates explicitly quark degrees of freedom, with quarks coupled to scalar, vector and isovector mesons. Mechanical and chemical instabilities are discussed as a function of density and isospin asymmetry. The binodal section, essential in the study of the liquid-gas phase transition is also constructed and discussed. The main results for the equation of state are compared with two common parametrizations used in the non-linear Walecka model and the differences are outlined.
