Energy Independent Solution to the Solar Neutrino Anomaly including the SNO data

The global data on solar neutrino rates and spectrum, including the SNO charged current rate, can be explained by LMA, LOW or the energy independent solution -- corresponding to near-maximal mixing. All the three favour a mild upward renormalisation of the Cl rate. A mild downward shift of the $B$ neutrino flux is favoured by the energy independent and to a lesser extent the LOW solution, but not by LMA. Comparison with the ratio of SK elastic and SNO charged current scattering rates favours the LMA over the other two solutions, but by no more than $1.5σ$.

Reviving the energy independent suppression of the solar neutrino flux

We explore the possibility of an energy independent suppression of the solar neutrino flux in the context of the recent SuperKamiokande data. From a global analysis of the rate and spectrum data, this scenario is allowed at only 14% probability with the observed Cl rate. If we allow for a 20% upward renormalisation of the Cl rate along with a downward renormalisation of the $B$ neutrino flux then the fit improves considerably to a probability of $\sim 50%$. We compare the quality of these fits with those of the MSW solutions. These renormalisations are also found to improve the quality of the fits with MSW solutions and enlarge the allowed region of their validity in the parameter space substantially. Over much of this enlarged region the matter effects on the suppression of the solar neutrino flux are found to be very weak, so that the solutions become practically energy independent.

Electron and Neutron Electric Dipole Moments in the Focus Point Scenario of SUGRA Model

We estimate the electron and neutron electric dipole moments in the focus point scenario of the minimal SUGRA model corresponding to large sfermion masses and moderate to large $\tanβ$. There is a viable region of moderate fine-tuning in the parameter space, around $\tanβ\simeq 5$, where the experimental limits on these electric dipole moments can be satisfied without assuming unnaturally small phase angles. But the fine-tuning constraints become more severe for $\tanβ> 10$.

LHC Signature of the Minimal SUGRA Model with a Large Soft Scalar Mass

Thanks to the focus point phenomenon, it is quite {\it natural} for the minimal SUGRA model to have a large soft scalar mass m_0 > 1 TeV. A distinctive feature of this model is an inverted hierarchy, where the lighter stop has a significantly smaller mass than the other squarks and sleptons. Consequently, the gluino is predicted to decay dominantly via stop exchange into a channel containing 2b and 2W along with the LSP. We exploit this feature to construct a robust signature for this model at the LHC in leptonic channels with 3-4 b-tags and a large missing-E_T.

Basic Constituents of the Visible and Invisible Matter - A Microscopic View of the Universe

One of the greatest achievements of twentieth century physics is the discovery of a very close link between the microcosm and the macrocosm. This follows from the two basic principles of quantum mechanics and relativity, the uncertainty principle and the mass energy equivalence, along with the standard big bang model of cosmology. As we probe deeper into the microcosm we encounter states of higher mass and energy, which were associated with the early history of the universe. Thus discovery of the atomic nucleus followed by the nuclear particles, quarks & gluons and finally the $W$ & $Z$ bosons have recreated in the laboratory the forms of matter that abounded in the very early universe. This has helped us to trace back the history of the universe to within a few picoseconds of its creation. Finally the discovery of the Higgs and supersymmetric particles will help to solve the mystry of the invisible matter, which abound throughout the universe today, as relics of that early history.

Does LEP prefer the NMSSM?

We study the naturalness of electroweak symmetry breaking and baryogenesis in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM). Our study is motivated by the recent LEP bounds on the Higgs boson mass which severely constrains the low \tanβregion of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). We show that the low \tan βregion of the NMSSM is clearly favoured over the MSSM with regard to the physical Higgs boson mass, fine-tuning, and electroweak baryogenesis.

Basic Constituents of Matter and their Interactions - A Progress Report

Our concept of the basic constituents of matter has undergone two revolutionary changes -- from atoms to proton & neutron and then onto quarks & leptons. Indeed all these quarks and leptons have been seen by now along with the carriers of their interactions, the gauge bosons. But the story is not complete yet. A consistent theory of mass requires the presence of Higgs bosons along with SUSY particles, which are yet to be seen. This is a turn of the century account of what has been achieved so far and what lies ahead.

Detecting Heavy Charged Higgs Bosons at the LHC with Four b-Quark Tags

We investigate the signature of a heavy charged Higgs boson of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in the lepton plus multi-jet channel at the Large Hadron Collider with four $b$-tags. The signal is the gluon-gluon fusion process $gg\to t\bar b H^-$, followed by the $H^-\to \bar t b$ decay, while the main background is from $gg\to t\bar t b\bar b$. We find that the two can be separated effectively by kinematic cuts and mass reconstruction, but the signal size is not very large in the end. Nonetheless, with a good $b$-tagging efficiency, $ε_b\sim50%$, this channel can provide a viable signature over a limited but interesting range of the parameter space.

Detecting heavy charged Higgs bosons at the LHC with triple b-tagging

We investigate the charged Higgs boson signal at the LHC using its dominant production and decay modes with triple b-tagging, i.e. $tH^- \to t\bar tb \to b\bar bb W^+ W^-$, followed by leptonic decay of one W and hadronic decay of the other. We consider the continuum background from the associated production of $t\bar t$ with a b- or a light quark or gluon jet, which can be mis-tagged as b-jet. We reconstruct the top quark masses to identify the 3rd b-jet accompanying the $t\bar t$ pair, and use its p_T distribution to distinguish the signal from the background. Combining this with the reconstruction of the $H^\pm$ mass gives a viable signature over two interesting regions of the parameter space - i.e. $\tanβ\sim 1$ and $\sim m_t/m_b$.

A Minimal See-Saw Model for Hierarchical Neutrino Masses with Large Mixing

The atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillation data suggest hierarchical neutrino masses with at least one large mixing. The simplest see-saw models for reconciling the two features are U(1) extensions of the SM with flavour dependent gauge charges. I discuss a minimal model of this type containing two heavy right-handed neutrinos, which have normal Dirac couplings to $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ but suppressed ones to $ν_e$. It can naturally account for the large (small) mixing solutions to the atmospheric (solar) neutrino oscillation data.

Effects of SO(10) D-Terms on SUSY Signals at the Tevatron

We study signals for the production of superparticles at the Tevatron in supergravity scenarios based on the Grand Unified group SO(10). The breaking of this group introduces extra contributions to the masses of all scalars, described by a single new parameter. We find that varying this parameter can considerably change the size of various expected signals studied in the literature, with different numbers of jets and/or charged leptons in the final state. The ratios of these signal can thus serve as a diagnostic to detect or constrain deviations from the much--studied scenario where all scalar masses are universal at the GUT scale. Moreover, under favorable circumstances some of these signals, and/or new signals involving hard $b-$jets, should be observable at the next run of the Tevatron collider even if the average scalar mass lies well above the gluino mass.

The Hadronic Tau Decay Signature of a Heavy Charged Higgs Boson at LHC

The hadronic tau decay channel offers by far the best signature for heavy charged Higgs boson search at the LHC in the large $\tanβ$ region. By exploiting the distinct polarization of the tau and its large transverse mass, along with the accompanying missing--$p_T$, one can probe for a charged Higgs boson up to a mass of about 600 GeV in an essentially background-free environment. The transverse mass distribution of the tau jet also provides a fairly unambiguous estimate of the charged Higgs boson mass.

Neutrino Mass and Osciallation: An Introductory Review

After a brief introduction to neutrino mass via the see-saw model I discuss neutrino mixing and oscillation, first in vacuum and then its matter enhancement. Then the solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation data are briefly reviewed. Finally I discuss the problem of reconciling hierarchical neutrino masses with at least one large mixing, as implied by these data. A minimal see-saw model for reconciling the two is discussed.

SUSY and SUGRA Signatures at Hadron Colliders

After a brief introduction to SUSY I discuss the missing-p_T signature for superparticles from R-parity conservation and the multilepton signature, which follows from their cascade decay. The GUT and SUGRA constraints on the SUSY mass parameters are discussed along with the resulting SUSY signals at LHC. Finally I consider the effect of relaxing the SUGRA constraint on these signals.

A See-Saw Model for Atmospheric and Solar Neutrino Oscillations

We have constructed an explicit see-saw model containing two singlet neutrinos, one carrying a $(B-3L_e)$ gauge charge with an intermediate mass scale of $\sim O(10^{10})$ GeV along with a sterile one near the GUT (grand unification theory) scale of $\sim O(10^{16})$ GeV. With these mass scales and a reasonable range of Yukawa couplings, the model can naturally account for the near-maximal mixing of atmospheric neutrino oscillations and the small mixing matter-enhanced oscillation solution to the solar neutrino deficit.
