Controlling the rain fall statistics using Mean-Reverting Jump Diffusion model

We present a stochastic mean-reverting jump-diffusion model to simulate rainfall time series and validate it using long-term half-hourly rain fall data from the North-East region of India. The model captures the intermittent and extreme-event dynamics of rainfall, reproducing superdiffusive behavior with an exponent $\sim 1.8$, along with the observed probability distributions and multifractal features. By systematically varying key parameters, we demonstrate a transition between Log-Normal and Gamma distributions, and show how the occurrence of extreme events and dry-patch durations can be controlled. Spectral and wavelet analyses further confirm that the simulated series reproduces the dominant temporal scales observed in real rainfall data. Our proposed framework provides a robust tool for generating realistic synthetic rainfall series and serves as an effective approach for understanding the influence of underlying stochastic processes that governs the rainfall statistics.

Oblique diffraction geometry for the observation of several non-coplanar Bragg reflections under identical illumination

We present a method to determine the strain tensor and local lattice rotation with Dark Field X-ray Microscopy. Using a set of at least 3 non-coplanar, symmetry-equivalent Bragg reflections, the illuminated volume of the sample can be kept constant for all reflections, facilitating easy registration of the measured lattice variations. This requires an oblique diffraction geometry, i.e.~the diffraction plane is neither horizontal nor vertical. We derive a closed, analytical expression that allows determination of the strain and lattice rotation from the deviation of experimental observables (e.g.~goniometer angles) from their nominal position for an unstrained lattice.

Evidence of Kolmogorov like scalings and multifractality in the rainfall events

In this paper we present a detailed statistical analysis related to the characterization of the spatial and temporal fluctuations present in the rainfall patterns of North-East region ($26.05^{\circ}N-26.95^{\circ}N$, $88.05^{\circ}E-94.95^{\circ}E$) of India using half hourly rainfall data over the last 20 years for the range 2001-2020. We analyze the nature of the distribution by computing the mean, second moment of the fluctuation, skewness and kurtosis of the temporal rainfall data that indicate the presence of heavy tail in the right skewed distribution a typical feature of the presence of rare events. We find that the temporal distribution of the rainfall data follow the multiplicative Log-Normal probability distribution. Further we compute the spatial and temporal correlation of the rainfall in this region indicate that the rainfall events are correlated in the spatial direction of about 70 Km. The Power spectral density of temporal rainfall shows power law behaviour with frequency with an exponent $\sim -1.5$ close to the Kolmogorov exponent ($-1.67$) exhibited for the turbulent passive scalar driven by the mean flow. Our wavelet analysis reveals the evidence of multiple frequencies in the rainfall pattern which can attributed to different short and long range factors responsible for the rainfall. We have also used the Hilbert Huang transformation to identify the frequencies corresponding fluctuating part of the rainfall time series. Using multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis, finally we establish the multifractal nature of the rainfall pattern with Hurst exponent close to $0.65$ .

Rapidity and centrality dependence of particle production for identified hadrons in Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV

The BRAHMS collaboration has measured transverse momentum spectra of pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons at rapidities 0 and 3 for Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV. As the collisions become more central the collective radial flow increases while the temperature of kinetic freeze-out decreases. The temperature is lower and the radial flow weaker at forward rapidity. Pion and kaon yields with transverse momenta between 1.5 and 2.5 GeV/c are suppressed for central collisions relative to scaled $p+p$ collisions. This suppression, which increases as the collisions become more central is consistent with jet quenching models and is also present with comparable magnitude at forward rapidity. At such rapidities initial state effects may also be present and persistence of the meson suppression to high rapidity may reflect a combination of jet quenching and nuclear shadowing. The ratio of protons to mesons increases as the collisions become more central and is largest at forward rapidities.

Correlation of exchange bias with magneto-structural effects across the compensation temperature of Co(Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$)$_2$O$_4$ (x = 0.05 and 0.075)

A small amount of Fe (5% and 7.5%) substitution in the Cr-site of the multiferroic compound CoCr2O4 leads to a magnetization reversal. In these compounds, we report a sign change in the exchange bias across the compensation temperature, accompanied by a non-monotonic change in the local moments across the compensation temperature. Such non-monotonic change in the magnetic moments is triggered by a similar change in the lattice structure. We relate here the sign change of exchange bias with that of the crystalline energy of the lattice and the Zeeman energy term arising from the anti-site disorder.

Multiple charge density wave transitions in Lu_{2} Ir_{3} Si_{5} single crystal

The physical properties of the single-crystalline samples of Lu_{2} Ir_{3} Si_{5} have been investigated by magnetic susceptibility, resistivity and heat capacity studies. We observed multiple charge density wave (CDW) transitions in all the measurements. A strong thermal hysteresis at these transitions suggests a possible first order CDW ordering. In addition, the first order nature is ascertained by a very narrow and a huge cusp (62 J/mol K) in the zero field specific heat data which also suggests a strong interchain coupling. By applying a field of 9T in the specific heat measurement, one of the CDW transitions is suppressed.

Rapidity dependence of deuteron production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

We have measured the distributions of protons and deuterons produced in high energy heavy ion Au+Au collisions at RHIC over a very wide range of transverse and longitudinal momentum. Near mid-rapidity we have also measured the distribution of anti-protons and anti-deuterons. We present our results in the context of coalescence models. In particular we extract the "volume of homogeneity" and the average phase-space density for protons and anti-protons. Near central rapidity the coalescence parameter $B_2(p_T)$ and the space averaged phase-space density $ (p_T)$ are very similar for both protons and anti-protons. For protons we see little variation of either $B_2(p_T)$ or the space averaged phase-space density as the rapidity increases from 0 to 3. However both these quantities depend strongly on $p_T$ at all rapidities. These results are in contrast to lower energy data where the proton and anti-proton phase-space densities are different at $y$=0 and both $B_2$ and $f$ depend strongly on rapidity.

Flux jumps, Second Magnetization Peak anomaly and the Peak Effect phenomenon in single crystals of $YNi_2B_2C$ and $LuNi_2B_2C$

We present magnetization measurements in single crystals of the tetragonal $YNi_2B_2C$ compound, which exhibit the phenomenon of peak effect as well as the second magnetization peak anomaly for H $>$ 0.5T (H $||$ c). At the lower field (50mT $<$ H $<$ 200mT), we have observed the presence of flux jumps, which seem to relate to a structural change in the local symmetry of the flux line lattice (a first order re-orientation transition across a local field in some parts of the sample, in the range of 100mT to 150mT). These flux jumps are also observed in a single crystal of $LuNi_2B_2C$ for H $||$ c in the field region from 2 mT to 25 mT, which are compatible with the occurrence of a re-orientation transition at a lower field in a cleaner crystal of this compound, as compared to those of $YNi_2B_2C$. Vortex phase diagrams drawn for H $||$ c in $LuNi_2B_2C$ and $YNi_2B_2C$ show that the ordered elastic glass phase spans a larger part of (H, T) space in the former as compared to latter, thereby, reaffirming the difference in the relative purity of the two samples.

Manifestation of modulation in spatial order of flux line lattice in weakly pinned superconductors : a vibrating sample magnetometer study

We have investigated the healing of transient disordered vortex states injected into a superconducting sample during the field ramping process in isothermal M-H measurements as a prescription to comprehend the modulation in the state of order of the underlying equilibrium vortex state in weakly pinned single crystals of $2H$-NbSe$_2$ (zero field transition temperature, $T_c(0) \sim 6 K$) and Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ ($T_c(0) \sim 8.2 K$), which display order-disorder transition(s). Our results reaffirm the notion that spatial order in the flux line lattice proceeds to the amorphous state in two distinct steps as evidenced by the presence of second magnetization peak (SMP) anomaly and the peak effect (PE) phenomenon. Disordering commencing at the onset field of SMP has a window to heal between its peak field ($H_{smp}^p$) and the onset field ($H_p^{on}$) of the PE. A comparison of the scan rate dependence of magnetization hysteresis widths in two different crystals of $2H$-NbSe$_2$, one of which displays only the PE phenomenon and the other one that displays both SMP and PE anomalies, show that while enhancment in quenched random pinning invokes the occurence of SMP anomaly, it slows down the temporal decay of currents across the PE region.

Magnetic field induced orientation of superconducting MgB$_2$ crystallites determined by X-ray diffraction

X-ray diffraction studies of fine polycrystalline samples of MgB$_2$ in the superconducting state reveal that crystals orient with their \emph{c}-axis in a plane normal to the direction of the applied magnetic field. The MgB$_2$ samples were thoroughly ground to obtain average grain size 5 - 10 $μ$m in order to increase the population of free single crystal grains in the powder. By monitoring Bragg reflections in a plane normal to an applied magnetic field we find that the powder is textured with significantly stronger (\emph{0,0,l}) reflections in comparison to (\emph{h,k,0}), which remain essentially unchanged. The orientation of the crystals with the \emph{ab}-plane parallel to the magnetic field at all temperatures below $T_c$ demonstrates that the sign of the torque under magnetic field does not alter, in disagreement with current theoretical predictions.

Measuring the Penetration Depth Anisotropy in MgB$_2$ using Small-Angle Neutron Scattering

Using small-angle neutron scattering we have measured the misalignment between an applied field of 4 kOe and the flux-line lattice in MgB$_2$, as the field is rotated away from the c axis by an angle $θ$. The measurements, performed at 4.9 K, showed the vortices canting towards the c axis for all field orientations. Using a two-band/two-gap model to calculate the magnetization we are able to fit our results yielding a penetration depth anisotropy, $\glam = 1.1 \pm 0.1$.

Pairing in High Temperature Superconductors and Berry Phase

The topological approach to the understanding of pairing mechanism in high $T_c$ superconductors analyses the relevance of the Berry phase factor in this context. This also gives the evidence for the pairing mechanism to be of magnetic origin.

Comparison of History Effects in Magnetization in Weakly pinned Crystals of high-$T_c$ and low-T$_c$ Superconductors

A comparison of the history effects in weakly pinned single crystals of a high $T_c$ YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7 - δ}$ (for H $\parallel$ c) and a low $T_c$ Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, which show anomalous variations in critical current density $J_c(H)$ are presented via tracings of the minor magnetization hysteresis loops using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The sample histories focussed are, (i) the field cooled (FC), (ii) the zero field cooled (ZFC) and (iii) an isothermal reversal of field from the normal state. An understanding of the results in terms of the modulation in the plastic deformation of the elastic vortex solid and supercooling across order-disorder transition is sought.

Vortex Phase Diagram of weakly pinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ for H $\parallel$ c

Vortex phase diagram in a weakly pinned crystal of YBCO for H $\parallel$ c is reviewed in the light of a recent elucidation of the process of `inverse melting' in a Bismuth cuprate system and the imaging of an interface between the ordered and the disordered regions across the peak effect in 2H-NbSe$_2$. In the given YBCO crystal, a clear distinction can be made between the second magnetization peak (SMP) and the peak effect (PE) between 65 K and 75 K. The field region between the peak fields of the SMP (H$^m_{smp}$) and the onset fields of the PE (H$^{on}_{pe}$)is not only continuously connected to the Bragg glass phase at lower fields but it is also sandwiched between the higher temperature vortex liquid phase and the lower temperature vortex glass phase. Thus, an ordered vortex state between H$^m_{smp}$ and H$^{on}_{pe}$ can get transformed to the (disordered) vortex liquid state on heating as well as to the (disordered) vortex glass state on cooling, a situation analogous to the thermal melting and the inverse melting phenomenon seen in a Bismuth cuprate.

Disordered Type-II Superconductors: A Universal Phase Diagram for Low-T$_c$ Systems

A universal phase diagram for weakly pinned low-T$_c$ type-II superconductors is revisited and extended with new proposals. The low-temperature ``Bragg glass'' phase is argued to transform first into a disordered, glassy phase upon heating. This glassy phase, a continuation of the high-field equilibrium vortex glass phase, then melts at higher temperatures into a liquid. This proposal provides an explanation for the anomalies observed in the peak effect regime of 2H-NbSe$_2$ and several other low-T$_c$ materials which is independent of the microscopic mechanisms of superconductivity in these systems.

Amorphization of Vortex Matter and Reentrant Peak Effect in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$

The peak effect (PE) has been observed in a twinned crystal of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ for H$\parallel$c in the low field range, close to the zero field superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$(0)) . A sharp depinning transition succeeds the peak temperature T$_p$ of the PE. The PE phenomenon broadens and its internal structure smoothens out as the field is increased or decreased beyond the interval between 250 Oe and 1000 Oe. Moreover, the PE could not be observed above 10 kOe and below 20 Oe. The locus of the T$_p$(H) values shows a reentrant characteristic with a nose like feature located at T$_p$(H)/T$_c$(0)$\approx$0.99 and H$\approx$100 Oe (where the FLL constant a$_0$$\approx$penetration depth $λ$). The upper part of the PE curve (0.5 kOe$<$H$<$10 kOe) can be fitted to a melting scenario with the Lindemann number c$_L$$\approx$0.25. The vortex phase diagram near T$_c$(0) determined from the characteristic features of the PE in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$(H$\parallel$c) bears close resemblance to that in the 2H-NbSe$_2$ system, in which a reentrant PE had been observed earlier.
