Phase Stability of Superfluid $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ in Anisotropic Aerogel

The A and B phases of superfluid 3 He have vector degrees of freedom that reflect their characteristic broken symmetries, respectively chiral and spin-orbit rotation axes. Anisotropic disorder in the superfluid, imbibed in uniformly strained silica aerogel, orients these degrees of freedom, thereby affecting phase stability. These degrees of freedom have been found to spontaneously reorient at a field-independent transition temperature Tx , that can be accounted for with a temperature dependent anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau model.

New Limits for Existence of Transverse Zero Sound in Fermi Liquid 3He

Landau predicted that transverse sound propagates in a Fermi liquid with sufficiently strong Fermi liquid interactions, unlike a classical fluid which cannot support shear oscillations. Previous attempts to observe this unique collective mode yielded inconclusive results due to contributions from single particle excitations. Here, we have microfabricated acoustic cavities with a micron-scale path length that is suitable for direct detection of this sound mode. The interference fringes of these acoustic Fabry-Perot cavities can be used to determine both the real and imaginary parts of the acoustic impedance. We report a null-result in this search as no clear interference fringe has been observed in the Fermi liquid, indicating the attenuation of TZS is likely above 2000 cm^-1. We provide theoretical justification for why the sound mode may yet exist but not being directly detectable due to high attenuation.

Planar Aerogel and Superfluid $^3$He, Structure and Transitions

Anisotropic aerogel possesses structure which exhibits a strong influence over the composition and orientation of the order parameter of imbibed superfluid $^3$He. Computational studies have identified stretched aerogel with plane-like structures and compressed aerogel with nematic-like structures. Studies of the B phase of superfluid $^3$He in stretched aerogel display an enhanced nuclear magnetic susceptibility likely caused by Andreev bound states near plane-like impurity sites. We report further details on the influence of these planar structures on both magnetic and orbital orientation transitions. The orbital orientation transitions appear in both the B and A phases of stretched and compressed aerogels. These transitions result from a crossover of the superfluid coherence length with long and short length scale structure with the coherence length and are consequently magnetic field independent. Additionally, the apparent temperature-independence of the susceptibility of the B phase equal to that of the A phase in stretched aerogel, is in marked contrast with the field dependence of the superfluid A to B phase transition, indicating that it is a near-isentropic transition.

Magnetic Susceptibility of Andreev Bound States in Superfluid $^3$He-B

Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of the magnetic susceptibility of superfluid $^3$He imbibed in anisotropic aerogel reveal anomalous behavior at low temperatures. Although the frequency shift clearly identifies a low-temperature phase as the $B$ phase, the magnetic susceptibility does not display the expected decrease associated with the formation of the opposite-spin Cooper pairs. This susceptibility anomaly appears to be the predicted high-field behavior corresponding to the Ising-like magnetic character of surface Andreev bound states within the planar aerogel structures.

Dynamic effect of electron-number parity in metal nanoparticles

Parity is a ubiquitous notion in science and serves as a fundamental principle for describing a physical system. Nanometer-scale metal objects are predicted to show dramatic differences in physical properties depending on the electron-number parity. However, the identification of the electron-number parity effects in real metal nanoparticles has remained elusive because of the variations in various features of nanoparticles. Here we report the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) detection of the dynamic effect of the electron-number parity in silver nanoparticles. With theoretical modeling of the NMR relaxation in silver nanoparticles, the measured nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate is found to be proportional to the electron-number-parity-dependent susceptibility and to the temperature. This observation demonstrates the electron-number-parity-governed spin dynamics in silver nanoparticles.

Deep Learning based Food Instance Segmentation using Synthetic Data

In the process of intelligently segmenting foods in images using deep neural networks for diet management, data collection and labeling for network training are very important but labor-intensive tasks. In order to solve the difficulties of data collection and annotations, this paper proposes a food segmentation method applicable to real-world through synthetic data. To perform food segmentation on healthcare robot systems, such as meal assistance robot arm, we generate synthetic data using the open-source 3D graphics software Blender placing multiple objects on meal plate and train Mask R-CNN for instance segmentation. Also, we build a data collection system and verify our segmentation model on real-world food data. As a result, on our real-world dataset, the model trained only synthetic data is available to segment food instances that are not trained with 52.2% mask AP@all, and improve performance by +6.4%p after fine-tuning comparing to the model trained from scratch. In addition, we also confirm the possibility and performance improvement on the public dataset for fair analysis. Our code and pre-trained weights are avaliable online at: https://github.com/gist-ailab/Food-Instance-Segmentation

Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project. I. Strategy and Sample

While the reverberation mapping technique is the best available method for measuring black hole mass in active galactic nuclei (AGN) beyond the local volume, this method has been mainly applied to relatively low-to-moderate luminosity AGNs at low redshift. We present the strategy of the Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project, which aims at measuring the time delay of the \Hb\ line emission with respect to AGN continuum, using a sample of relatively high luminosity AGNs out to z $\sim$0.5. We present simulated cross correlation results based on a number of mock light curves, in order to optimally determine monitoring duration and cadence. We describe our campaign strategy based on the simulation results and the availability of observing facilities. We present the sample selection, and the properties of the selected 100 AGNs, including the optical luminosity, expected time lag, black hole mass, and Eddington ratio.

Reverberation Mapping of PG 0934+013 with the Southern African Large Telescope

We present the variability and time lag measurements of PG 0934+013 based on a photometric and spectroscopic monitoring campaign over a two year period. We obtained 46 epochs of data from the spectroscopic campaign, which was carried out using the Southern African Large Telescope with $\sim$1 week cadence over two sets of 4 month-long observing period, while we obtained 80 epochs of \textit{B}-band imaging data using a few 1-m class telescopes. Due to the seven month gap between the two observing periods, we separately measured the time lags of broad emission lines including H$β$, by comparing the emission line light curve with the \textit{B}-band continuum light curve using the cross-correlation function techniques. We determined the H$β$ lag, $τ_{\rm cent} = 8.46^{+2.08}_{-2.14}$ days in the observed-frame based on Year 2 data, while the time lag from Year 1 data was not reliably determined. Using the rms spectrum of Year 2 data, we measured the \Hb\ line dispersion \sigmaline = 668 $\pm$ 44 \kms\ after correcting for the spectral resolution. Adopting a virial factor f = 4.47 from Woo et al. 2015, we determined the black hole mass M$_{BH}$ = $3.13 ^{+0.91} _{-0.93} \times 10^{6}$ \msun based on the \Hb\ time lag and velocity.

PreCam, a Precursor Observational Campaign for Calibration of the Dark Energy Survey

PreCam, a precursor observational campaign supporting the Dark Energy Survey (DES), is designed to produce a photometric and astrometric catalog of nearly a hundred thousand standard stars within the DES footprint, while the PreCam instrument also serves as a prototype testbed for the Dark Energy Camera (DECam)'s hardware and software. This catalog represents a potential 100-fold increase in Southern Hemisphere photometric standard stars, and therefore will be an important component in the calibration of the Dark Energy Survey. We provide details on the PreCam instrument's design, construction and testing, as well as results from a subset of the 51 nights of PreCam survey observations on the University of Michigan Department of Astronomy's Curtis-Schmidt telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. We briefly describe the preliminary data processing pipeline that has been developed for PreCam data and the preliminary results of the instrument performance, as well as astrometry and photometry of a sample of stars previously included in other southern sky surveys.

The Lick AGN Monitoring Project 2011: Reverberation Mapping of Markarian 50

The Lick AGN Monitoring Project 2011 observing campaign was carried out over the course of 11 weeks in Spring 2011. Here we present the first results from this program, a measurement of the broad-line reverberation lag in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 50. Combining our data with supplemental observations obtained prior to the start of the main observing campaign, our dataset covers a total duration of 4.5 months. During this time, Mrk 50 was highly variable, exhibiting a maximum variability amplitude of a factor of 4 in the U-band continuum and a factor of 2 in the H-beta line. Using standard cross-correlation techniques, we find that H-beta and H-gamma lag the V-band continuum by tau_cen = 10.64(-0.93,+0.82) and 8.43(-1.28,+1.30) days, respectively, while the lag of He II 4686 is unresolved. The H-beta line exhibits a symmetric velocity-resolved reverberation signature with shorter lags in the high-velocity wings than in the line core, consistent with an origin in a broad-line region dominated by orbital motion rather than infall or outflow. Assuming a virial normalization factor of f=5.25, the virial estimate of the black hole mass is (3.2+-0.5)*10^7 solar masses. These observations demonstrate that Mrk 50 is among the most promising nearby active galaxies for detailed investigations of broad-line region structure and dynamics.

Optical pumping of electronic and nuclear spin in single charge-tunable quantum dots

We present a comprehensive examination of optical pumping of spins in individual GaAs quantum dots as we change the charge from positive to neutral to negative using a Schottky diode. We observe that photoluminescence polarization memory has the same sign as the net charge of the dot. Optical pumping of ground state electron spins enhances this effect, as demonstrated through the first measurements of the Hanle effect on an individual quantum dot. With the Overhauser effect in a high longitudinal magnetic field, we demonstrate efficient optical pumping of the quantum dot's nuclear spins for all three charge states.
