Dark Matter and Dark Energy Interactions: Theoretical Challenges, Cosmological Implications and Observational Signatures

Models where Dark Matter and Dark Energy interact with each other have been proposed to solve the coincidence problem. We review the motivations underlying the need to introduce such interaction, its influence on the background dynamics and how it modifies the evolution of linear perturbations. We test models using the most recent observational data and we find that the interaction is compatible with the current astronomical and cosmological data. Finally, we describe the forthcoming data sets from current and future facilities that are being constructed or designed that will allow a clearer understanding of the physics of the dark sector.

Matter density perturbations in interacting quintessence models

Models with dark energy decaying into dark matter have been proposed to solve the coincidence problem in cosmology. We study the effect of such coupling in the matter power spectrum. Due to the interaction, the growth of matter density perturbations during the radiation dominated regime is slower compared to non-interacting models with the same ratio of dark matter to dark energy today. This effect introduces a damping on the power spectrum at small scales proportional to the strength of the interaction and similar to the effect generated by ultrarelativistic neutrinos. The interaction also shifts matter--radiation equality to larger scales. We compare the matter power spectrum of interacting quintessence models with the measurments of 2dFGRS. We particularize our study to models that during radiation domination have a constant dark matter to dark energy ratio.

Interacting quintessence and the coincidence problem

We investigate the role of a possible coupling of dark matter and dark energy. In particular, we explore the consequences of such an interaction for the coincidence problem, i.e., for the question, why the energy densities of dark matter and dark energy are of the same order just at the present epoch. We demonstrate, that, with the help of a suitable coupling, it is possible to reproduce any scaling solution $ρ_X \propto ρ_M a^ξ$, where $a$ is the scale factor of the Robertson-Walker metric and $ξ$ is a constant parameter. $ρ_X$ and $ρ_M$ are the densities of dark energy and dark matter, respectively. Furthermore, we show that an interaction between dark matter and dark energy can drive the transition from an early matter dominated era to a phase of accelerated expansion with a stable, stationary ratio of the energy densities of both components.

Hyperbolic theories of dissipation: Why and when do we need them?

We illustrate and emphasize the relevance of hyperbolic theories of dissipation in different physical scenarios. Particular attention is paid to self-gravitating systems where the relaxation time may become large enough as to require a description of the transient regime. It is argued that even outside that regime, hyperbolic theories may be needed to provide an accurate description of dissipative processes.

Measuring the strength of dissipative inflation

We comment on recently proposed dissipative inflationary models. It is shown that the strength of the inflationary expansion is related to a specific combination of thermodynamic variables which is known to measure the instability of self-gravitating dissipative systems.
