A Liouville-type theorem for the 3D primitive equations

The 3D primitive equations are used in most geophysical fluid models to approximate the large scale oceanic and atmospheric dynamics. We prove that there do not exist smooth stationary solutions to the 3D primitive equations with compact support, independently of the presence of the Coriolis rotation term or the viscosity. This result is in strong contrast with the recently established existence of compactly supported smooth solutions to the incompressible 3D Euler equations.

Existence of minimal flows on nonorientable surfaces

Surfaces admitting flows all whose orbits are dense are called minimal. Minimal orientable surfaces were characterized by J.C. Benière in 1998, leaving open the nonorientable case. This paper fills this gap providing a characterization of minimal nonorientable surfaces of finite genus. We also construct an example of a minimal nonorientable surface with infinite genus and conjecture that any nonorientable surface without combinatorial boundary is minimal.

Can two chaotic systems give rise to order?

The recently discovered Parrondo's paradox claims that two losing games can result, under random or periodic alternation of their dynamics, in a winning game: "losing+losing=winning". In this paper we follow Parrondo's philosophy of combining different dynamics and we apply it to the case of one-dimensional quadratic maps. We prove that the periodic mixing of two chaotic dynamics originates an ordered dynamics in certain cases. This provides an explicit example (theoretically and numerically tested) of a different Parrondian paradoxical phenomenon: "chaos+chaos=order"

On quantum integrability and Hamiltonians with pure point spectrum

We prove that any $n$-dimensional Hamiltonian operator with pure point spectrum is completely integrable via self-adjoint first integrals. Furthermore, we establish that given any closed set $Σ\subset\mathbb R$ there exists an integrable $n$-dimensional Hamiltonian which realizes it as its spectrum. We develop several applications of these results and discuss their implications in the general framework of quantum integrability.

Topological and geometrical restrictions, free-boundary problems and self-gravitating fluids

Let (P1) be certain elliptic free-boundary problem on a Riemannian manifold (M,g). In this paper we study the restrictions on the topology and geometry of the fibres (the level sets) of the solutions f to (P1). We give a technique based on certain remarkable property of the fibres (the analytic representation property) for going from the initial PDE to a global analytical characterization of the fibres (the equilibrium partition condition). We study this analytical characterization and obtain several topological and geometrical properties that the fibres of the solutions must possess, depending on the topology of M and the metric tensor g. We apply these results to the classical problem in physics of classifying the equilibrium shapes of both Newtonian and relativistic static self-gravitating fluids. We also suggest a relationship with the isometries of a Riemannian manifold.
