Probe-assisted Depopulation Pumping in Low-pressure Alkali-metal Vapor Cells for Magnetometry

For precision atomic magnetometry, inert buffer gas is included in alkali-metal vapor cells to significantly broaden hyperfine transitions, which facilitates optical pumping and reduces diffusive relaxation, while also providing non-radiative excited state quenching. We show low-buffer gas pressure (below 50 Torr) alkali vapor cells with resolved hyperfine manifolds can also yield high-performance magnetometers. For high polarization in $^{87}$Rb, we optically pump $F=2$ states with narrow linewidth $\sigma_+$ light, while tuning a probe beam to depopulate $F=1$ states ($\Delta\nu = 6.8$ GHz from $F=2$). The probe tuning then also provides $F=2$ detection with high optical rotation and low probe broadening; we demonstrate top-bottom gradiometry, within a single 25 Torr, 0.5 cc cell, that yields an Earth's field free-precession magnetometer sensitivity of 18 fT/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ with a 1 kHz bandwidth, as well as RF magnetometer sensitivity of 12 fT/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ in a small band about 110 kHz.

GD358: three decades of observations for the in-depth asteroseismology of a DBV star

We report on the analysis of 34 years of photometric observations of the pulsating helium atmosphere white dwarf GD358. The complete data set includes archival data from 1982-2006, and 1195.2 hours of new observations from 2007- 2016. From this data set, we extract 15 frequencies representing g-mode pulsation modes, adding 4 modes to the 11 modes known previously. We present evidence that these 15 modes are ell = 1 modes, 13 of which belong to a consecutive sequence in radial overtone k. We perform a detailed asteroseismic analysis using models that include parameterized, complex carbon and oxygen core composition profiles to fit the periods. Recent spectroscopic analyses place GD358 near the red edge of the DBV instability strip, at 24,000 plus or minus 500 K and a log g of 7.8 plus or minus 0.08 dex. The surface gravity translates to a mass range of 0.455 to 0.540 solar masses. Our best fit model has a temperature of 23,650 K and a mass of 0.5706 solar masses. That is slightly more massive than suggested by most the recent spectroscopy. We find a pure helium layer mass of 10^-5.50, consistent with the result of previous studies and the outward diffusion of helium over time.

Ground state properties of antiferromagnetic anisotropic S=1 Heisenberg spin chains

Using (infinite) density matrix renormalization group techniques, ground state properties of antiferromagnetic S=1 Heisenberg spin chains with exchange and single-site anisotropies in an external field are studied. The phase diagram is known to display a plenitude of interesting phases. We elucidate quantum phase transitions between the supersolid and spin-liquid as well as the spin-liquid and the ferromagnetic phases. Analyzing spin correlation functions in the spin-liquid phase, commensurate and (two distinct) incommensurate regions are identified.

Quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with exchange and single--ion anisotropies

Using density matrix renormalization group calculations, ground state properties of the spin-1 Heisenberg chain with exchange and quadratic single-ion anisotropies in an external field are studied, for special choices of the two kinds of anisotropies. In particular, the phase diagram includes antiferromagnetic, spin-liquid (or spin-flop), (10), and supersolid (or biconical) phases. Especially, new features of the spin-liquid and supersolid phases are discussed. Properties of the quantum chains are compared to those of corresponding classical spin chains.

Classical and quantum anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We study classical and quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets with exchange anisotropy of XXZ-type and crystal field single-ion terms of quadratic and cubic form in a field. The magnets display a variety of phases, including the spin-flop (or, in the quantum case, spin-liquid) and biconical (corresponding, in the quantum lattice gas description, to supersolid) phases. Applying ground-state considerations, Monte Carlo and density matrix renormalization group methods, the impact of quantum effects and lattice dimension is analysed. Interesting critical and multicritical behaviour may occur at quantum and thermal phase transitions.

Spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with exchange and single-ion anisotropies

Using density matrix renormalization group calculations, ground state properties of the spin-1 Heisenberg chain with exchange and single-ion anisotropies in an external field are studied. Our findings confirm and refine recent results by Sengupta and Batista, Physical Review Letters 99, 217205 (2007) (2007), on the same model applying Monte Carlo techniques. In particular, we present evidence for two types of biconical (or supersolid) and for two types of spin-flop (or superfluid) structures. Basic features of the quantum phase diagram may be interpreted qualitatively in the framework of classical spin models.
