Fast measurements and multiqubit gates in dual species atomic arrays

We propose and analyze an approach for fast syndrome measurements in an array of rubidium and cesium atomic qubits. The scheme works by implementing an inter-species $\textsf{CNOT}_k$ gate, entangling one cesium ancilla qubit with $k\geq 1$ rubidium qubits which are then used for state measurement. Utilizing Rydberg states with different inter- and intra-species interaction strengths, the proposal provides a syndrome measurement fidelity of $\mathcal{F}>0.9999$ in less than 5 $μ$s of integration time.

Qubit Analog with Polariton Superfluid in an Annular Trap

We report on the experimental realization and characterization of a qubit analog with semiconductor exciton-polaritons. In our system, a condensate of exciton-polaritons is confined by a spatially-patterned pump laser in an annular trap that supports energy-degenerate circulating currents of the polariton superfluid. Using temporal interference measurements, we observe coherent oscillations between a pair of counter-circulating superfluid vortex states of the polaritons coupled by elastic scattering off the laser-imprinted potential. The qubit basis states correspond to the symmetric and antisymmetric superpositions of the two vortex states forming orthogonal double-lobe spatial wavefunctions. By engineering the potential, we tune the coupling and coherent oscillations between the two circulating current states, control the energies of the qubit basis states, and initialize the qubit in the desired state. The dynamics of the system is accurately reproduced by our theoretical two-state model, and we discuss potential avenues to achieve complete control over our polaritonic qubits and realize controllable interactions between such qubits to implement quantum gates and algorithms analogous to quantum computation with standard qubits.

Microscopic dynamics and an effective Landau-Zener transition in the quasi-adiabatic preparation of spatially ordered states of Rydberg excitations

We examine the adiabatic preparation of spatially-ordered Rydberg excitations of atoms in finite one-dimensional lattices by frequency-chirped laser pulses, as realized in a number of recent experiments simulating quantum Ising model. Our aims are to unravel the microscopic mechanism of the phase transition from the unexcited state of atoms to the antiferromagnetic-like state of Rydberg excitations by traversing an extended gapless phase, and to estimate the preparation fidelity of the target state in a moderately sized system amenable to detailed numerical analysis. We find that, in the basis of the bare atomic states, the system climbs the ladder of Rydberg excitations predominantly along the strongest-amplitude paths towards the final ordered state. We show that, despite its complexity, the interacting many-body system can be described as an effective two-level system involving a pair of lowest-energy instantaneous collective eigenstates of the time-dependent Hamiltonian. The final preparation fidelity of the target state can then be well approximated by the Landau-Zener formula, while the nonadiabatic population leakage during the passage can be estimated using a perturbative approach applied to the instantaneous collective eigenstates.

Topological edge-states of the PT-symmetric Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model: An effective two-state description

We consider the non-Hermitian, parity-time (PT) symmetric extensions of the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model in the topological non-trivial configuration. We study the properties of the topologically protected edge states, and develop an effective two-state analytical description of the system that accurately predicts the PT-symmetry breaking point for the edge states. We verify our analytical results by exact numerical calculations.

Ultralong temporal coherence in optically trapped exciton-polariton condensates

We investigate an optically trapped exciton-polariton condensate and observe temporal coherence beyond 1~ns duration. Due to the reduction of the spatial overlap with the thermal reservoir of excitons, the coherence time of the trapped condensate is more than an order of magnitude longer than that of an untrapped condensate. This ultralong coherence enables high precision spectroscopy of the trapped condensate, and we observe periodic beats of the field correlation function due to a fine energy splitting of two polarization modes of the condensate. Our results are important for realizing polariton simulators with spinor condensates in lattice potentials.

Optimal collection of radiation emitted by a trapped atomic ensemble

Trapped atomic ensembles are convenient systems for quantum information storage in the long-lived sublevels of the electronic ground state and its conversion to propagating optical photons via stimulated Raman processes. Here we investigate a phase-matched emission of photons from a coherently prepared atomic ensemble. We consider an ensemble of cold atoms in an elongated harmonic trap with normal density distribution, and determine the parameters of paraxial optics to match the mode geometry of the emitted radiation and optimally collect it into an optical waveguide.

Coherent population oscillations and an effective spin-exchange interaction in a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric polariton mixture

We study a two-species mixture of exciton-polaritons with self- and cross-interaction nonlinearities in a double well structure, in the presence of relaxation and continuous pumping. We identify the conditions that render the system parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric, and investigate its dynamic and static properties. We show that the system can exhibit long-term coherent oscillations of populations of the two polaritonic components between the two potential wells, and can simulate the dynamics of a pair of spin-1/2 particles (qubits) in the presence of exchange interaction.

Realization of efficient quantum gates with a superconducting qubit-qutrit circuit

Building a quantum computer is a daunting challenge since it requires good control but also good isolation from the environment to minimize decoherence. It is therefore important to realize quantum gates efficiently, using as few operations as possible, to reduce the amount of required control and operation time and thus improve the quantum state coherence. Here we propose a superconducting circuit for implementing a tunable system consisting of a qutrit coupled to two qubits. This system can efficiently accomplish various quantum information tasks, including generation of entanglement of the two qubits and conditional three-qubit quantum gates, such as the Toffoli and Fredkin gates. Furthermore, the system realizes a conditional geometric gate which may be used for holonomic (non-adiabatic) quantum computing. The efficiency, robustness and universality of the presented circuit makes it a promising candidate to serve as a building block for larger networks capable of performing involved quantum computational tasks.

A coherent router for quantum networks

Scalable quantum information processing will require quantum networks of qubits with the ability to coherently transfer quantum states between the desired sender and receiver nodes. Here we propose a scheme to implement a quantum router that can direct quantum states from an input qubit to a preselected output qubit. The path taken by the transferred quantum state is controlled by the state of one or more ancilla qubits. This enables both directed transport between a sender and a number of receiver nodes, and generation of distributed entanglement in the network. We demonstrate the general idea using a two-output setup and discuss how the quantum routing may be expanded to several outputs. We also present a possible realization of our ideas with superconducting circuits.

Deterministic free-space source of single photons using Rydberg atoms

We propose an efficient free-space scheme to create single photons in a well-defined spatiotemporal mode. To that end, we first prepare a single source atom in an excited Rydberg state. The source atom interacts with a large ensemble of ground-state atoms via a laser-mediated dipole-dipole exchange interaction. Using an adiabatic passage with a chirped laser pulse, we produce a spatially extended spin wave of a single Rydberg excitation in the ensemble, accompanied by the transition of the source atom to another Rydberg state. The collective atomic excitation can then be converted to a propagating optical photon via a coherent coupling field. In contrast to previous approaches, our single-photon source does not rely on the strong coupling of a single emitter to a resonant cavity, nor does it require the heralding of collective excitation or complete Rydberg blockade of multiple excitations in the atomic ensemble.

Controllability in tunable chains of coupled harmonic oscillators

We prove that temporal control of the strengths of springs connecting $N$ harmonic oscillators in a chain provides complete access to all Gaussian states of $N-1$ collective modes. The proof relies on the construction of a suitable basis of cradle modes for the system. An iterative algorithm to reach any desired Gaussian state requires at most $3N(N-1)/2$ operations. We illustrate this capability by engineering squeezed pseudo-phonon states - highly non-local, strongly correlated states that may result from various nonlinear processes. Tunable chains of coupled harmonic oscillators can be implemented by a number of current state-of-the-art experimental platforms, including cold atoms in lattice potentials, arrays of mechanical micro-oscillators, and coupled optical waveguides.

Quantum spin transistor with a Heisenberg spin chain

We propose and analyze a scheme for conditional state transfer in a Heisenberg $XXZ$ spin chain which realizes a quantum spin transistor. In our scheme, the absence or presence of a control spin excitation in the central gate part of the spin chain results in either perfect transfer of an arbitrary state of a target spin between the weakly coupled input and output ports, or its complete blockade at the input port. We also present a possible realization of the corresponding spin chain with a one-dimensional ensemble of cold atoms with strong contact interactions.

Tunable self-assembled spin chains of strongly interacting cold atoms

We have developed an efficient computational method to treat long, one-dimensional systems of strongly-interacting atoms forming self-assembled spin chains. Such systems can be used to realize many spin chain model Hamiltonians tunable by the external confining potential. As a concrete demonstration, we consider quantum state transfer in a Heisenberg spin chain and we show how to determine the confining potential in order to obtain nearly-perfect state transfer.

Quantum technologies with hybrid systems

An extensively pursued current direction of research in physics aims at the development of practical technologies that exploit the effects of quantum mechanics. As part of this ongoing effort, devices for information processing, secure communication and high-precision sensing are being implemented with diverse systems, ranging from photons, atoms and spins to mesoscopic superconducting and nanomechanical structures. Their physical properties make some of these systems better suited than others for specific tasks; thus, photons are well suited for transmitting quantum information, weakly interacting spins can serve as long-lived quantum memories, and superconducting elements can rapidly process information encoded in their quantum states. A central goal of the envisaged quantum technologies is to develop devices that can simultaneously perform several of these tasks, namely, reliably store, process, and transmit quantum information. Hybrid quantum systems composed of different physical components with complementary functionalities may provide precisely such multi-tasking capabilities. This article reviews some of the driving theoretical ideas and first experimental realizations of hybrid quantum systems and the opportunities and the challenges they present and offers a glance at the near- and long-term perspectives of this fascinating and rapidly expanding field.

Engineering the Dynamics of Effective Spin-Chain Models for Strongly Interacting Atomic Gases

We consider a one-dimensional gas of cold atoms with strong contact interactions and construct an effective spin-chain Hamiltonian for a two-component system. The resulting Heisenberg spin model can be engineered by manipulating the shape of the external confining potential of the atomic gas. We find that bosonic atoms offer more flexibility for tuning independently the parameters of the spin Hamiltonian through interatomic (intra-species) interaction which is absent for fermions due to the Pauli exclusion principle. Our formalism can have important implications for control and manipulation of the dynamics of few- and many-body quantum systems; as an illustrative example relevant to quantum computation and communication, we consider state transfer in the simplest non-trivial system of four particles representing exchange-coupled qubits.

Reversible state transfer between superconducting qubits and atomic ensembles

We examine the possibility of coherent, reversible information transfer between solid-state superconducting qubits and ensembles of ultra-cold atoms. Strong coupling between these systems is mediated by a microwave transmission line resonator that interacts near-resonantly with the atoms via their optically excited Rydberg states. The solid-state qubits can then be used to implement rapid quantum logic gates, while collective metastable states of the atoms can be employed for long-term storage and optical read-out of quantum information.

Giantly enhanced cross-phase modulation with suppressed spectral broadening is predicted between optically-induced dark-state polaritons whose propagation is strongly affected by photonic bandgaps of spatially periodic media with multilevel dopants. This mechanism is shown to be capable of fully entangling two single-photon pulses with high fidelity.

Electron wavepacket propagation and entanglement in a chain of coupled quantum dots

We study the coherent dynamics of one- and two-electron transport in a linear array of tunnel-coupled quantum dots. We find that this system exhibits a rich variety of coherent phenomena, ranging from electron wavepacket propagation and interference to two-particle bonding and entanglement. Our studies, apart from their relevance to the exploration of quantum dynamics and transport in periodic structures, are also aimed at possible applications in future quantum computation schemes.
