First investigation of $^{96}$Zr samples enriched by the gas-centrifuge method for the use in rare-decay studies

For the first time, the isotope $^{96}$Zr has been produced by the gas-centrifuge method (enrichment is 88.28% and full mass of $^{96}$Zr is 179.816 g). The level of radionuclide impurities of the samples and thus their suitability for rare-event search have been investigated using three low-background HPGe detectors. The most stringent limit, obtained at sea level, on the half-life of the double beta decay of $^{96}$Zr to the $0^+_1$ excited state (1148 keV) of $^{96}$Mo has been set $T_{1/2}(0\nu+2\nu)>3.9 \times 10^{19}$ yr (90% C.L.).

Application of a high-precision distributed uranium source for determining the effective mass and volume of a HPGe detector

A distributed uranium source with the accurately certified activity of 238U has been used to verify the effective mass of the HPGe detector intended for the {\nu}GeN neutrino experiment. The source, dissolved in nitric acid, provides homogeneous irradiation of the detector crystal allowing the study of its mass and volume. The experimental spectra obtained with the distributed source have been compared to the detailed Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations. The measured counting rates of several gamma-lines agree with the simulated efficiencies, confirming that the detector mass and volume coincide with the manufacturer specifications. The results demonstrate the applicability of such sources for mass calibration of HPGe detectors.

New constraints on coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering by the nuGeN experiment

The nuGeN experiment searches for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) at the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant. A 1.41-kg high-purity low-threshold germanium detector surrounded by active and passive shielding is deployed at the minimal distance of 11.1 m allowed by the lifting mechanism from the center of reactor core, utilizing one of the highest antineutrino fluxes among the competing experiments. The direct comparison of the count rates obtained during reactor-ON and reactor-OFF periods with the energy threshold of 0.29~keV$_{ee}$ shows no statistically significant difference. New upper limits on the number of CEvNS events are evaluated on the basis of the residual ON$-$OFF count rate spectrum.

Direct determination of the $^{235}$U to $^{239}$Pu inverse beta decay yield ratio in the power reactor neutrino experiments

The yields of the inverse beta decay events produced by antineutrinos from a certain nuclear reactor fuel component are used by many experiments to check various model predictions. Yet measurements of the absolute yields feature significant uncertainties coming, mainly, from the understanding of the antineutrino detection efficiency. This work presents a simple novel approach to directly determine the $^{235}$U to $^{239}$Pu inverse beta decay yield ratio using the fuel evolution analysis. This ratio can be used for a sensitive test of reactor models, while the proposed method, results in smaller systematic uncertainties. The DANSS result on this ratio is one of the most precise among reactor neutrino experiments, yet does not significantly contradict to any previous measurement.

Long term remote reactor power and fuel composition monitoring using antineutrinos

Electron antineutrinos are emitted in the decay chains of the fission products inside a reactor core and could be used for remote monitoring of nuclear reactors. The DANSS detector is placed under the core of the 3.1 GW power reactor at the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) and collects up to 5000 antineutrino events per day. DANSS measured changes of the reactor power by antineutrino counting rates over 7 years with 1.0% accuracy in one week periods. The fission fractions of four major isotopes for the reactor power calculations were provided by KNPP. The systematic uncertainty of this measurement is less than 0.8%. It is comparable to the accuracy of conventional methods of the reactor power measurements while it is based on completely different approach. For the first time the 239Pu and 235U fission fractions were reconstructed using antineutrino inverse beta-decay spectrum which is a completely new technique. This method was applied to the data from three reactor fuel campaigns (approximately 1.5 year each). The reconstructed fission fractions in about two-week measurements and the fission fractions provided by KNPP coincide within better than 3% accuracy. This provides confidence in both completely different approaches of the fission fraction determination.

Study of polysterene based scintillator ageing in the DANSS experiment

DANSS is a spectrometer of reactor antineutrino based on plastic scintillator. The sensitive volume of the detector is made of 2500 polystyrene based scintillator plates with wavelength shifting (WLS) fiber readout (strips). We present a study of the strips light yield during 6.5 years of DANSS continuous running. Overall ageing at the rate $0.55 \pm 0.05(syst.)$ % per year is observed that is considerably smaller than in other similar experiments. We also observe the WLS fiber attenuation length shortening at the rate $0.26 \pm 0.04(stat.)$ % per year.

Application of the Duperier method to the analysis of the cosmic muon flux dependence on the meteorological parameters, based on the DANSS detector data

The detector DANSS is located under n industrial nuclear reactor at Kalininskaya Nuclear Power Plant. This location provides ~ 50 m.w.e. reduction of the cosmic muon flux in the vertical direction, which places the experiment in an intermediate position between ground and underground experiments in terms of shielding from the cosmic rays. The detector DANSS is located under an industrial nuclear reactor at Kalininskaya Nuclear Power Plant. This location provides ~50 m.w.e. reduction of the cosmic muon flux in the vertical direction, which places the experiment in an intermediate position between ground and underground experiments in terms of shielding from the cosmic rays. The detector's sensitive area consists of 2500 plastic scintillator counters, each 100x4x1 cm$^3$ in size, making in total a 1 m$^3$ volume, which is surrounded by a muon veto system and multiple layers of passive shielding. The main goal of the DANSS experiment is to study the antineutrino spectra at different distances from the source. For this purpose the detector is placed on a lifting platform, and the data is collected at three positions: 10.9 m, 11.9 m and 12.9 m from the center of the reactor core. The detector is capable of reconstructing muon tracks passing though the sensitive volume. In this work the barometric, height and temperature correlation coefficients are calculated in three areas of the zenith angle $\theta$ using the Duperier approach. These results are based on the muon data collected during four years.

First demonstration of 30 eVee ionization energy resolution with Ricochet germanium cryogenic bolometers

The future Ricochet experiment aims to search for new physics in the electroweak sector by measuring the Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering process from reactor antineutrinos with high precision down to the sub-100 eV nuclear recoil energy range. While the Ricochet collaboration is currently building the experimental setup at the reactor site, it is also finalizing the cryogenic detector arrays that will be integrated into the cryostat at the Institut Laue Langevin in early 2024. In this paper, we report on recent progress from the Ge cryogenic detector technology, called the CryoCube. More specifically, we present the first demonstration of a 30~eVee (electron equivalent) baseline ionization resolution (RMS) achieved with an early design of the detector assembly and its dedicated High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) based front-end electronics. This represents an order of magnitude improvement over the best ionization resolutions obtained on similar heat-and-ionization germanium cryogenic detectors from the EDELWEISS and SuperCDMS dark matter experiments, and a factor of three improvement compared to the first fully-cryogenic HEMT-based preamplifier coupled to a CDMS-II germanium detector. Additionally, we discuss the implications of these results in the context of the future Ricochet experiment and its expected background mitigation performance.

Results from a Prototype TES Detector for the Ricochet Experiment

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) offers valuable sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model. The Ricochet experiment will use cryogenic solid-state detectors to perform a precision measurement of the CE$\nu$NS spectrum induced by the high neutrino flux from the Institut Laue-Langevin nuclear reactor. The experiment will employ an array of detectors, each with a mass of $\sim$30 g and a targeted energy threshold of 50 eV. Nine of these detectors (the "Q-Array") will be based on a novel Transition-Edge Sensor (TES) readout style, in which the TES devices are thermally coupled to the absorber using a gold wire bond. We present initial characterization of a Q-Array-style detector using a 1 gram silicon absorber, obtaining a baseline root-mean-square resolution of less than 40 eV.

Fast neutron background characterization of the future Ricochet experiment at the ILL research nuclear reactor

The future Ricochet experiment aims at searching for new physics in the electroweak sector by providing a high precision measurement of the Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CENNS) process down to the sub-100 eV nuclear recoil energy range. The experiment will deploy a kg-scale low-energy-threshold detector array combining Ge and Zn target crystals 8.8 meters away from the 58 MW research nuclear reactor core of the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France. Currently, the Ricochet collaboration is characterizing the backgrounds at its future experimental site in order to optimize the experiment's shielding design. The most threatening background component, which cannot be actively rejected by particle identification, consists of keV-scale neutron-induced nuclear recoils. These initial fast neutrons are generated by the reactor core and surrounding experiments (reactogenics), and by the cosmic rays producing primary neutrons and muon-induced neutrons in the surrounding materials. In this paper, we present the Ricochet neutron background characterization using $^3$He proportional counters which exhibit a high sensitivity to thermal, epithermal and fast neutrons. We compare these measurements to the Ricochet Geant4 simulations to validate our reactogenic and cosmogenic neutron background estimations. Eventually, we present our estimated neutron background for the future Ricochet experiment and the resulting CENNS detection significance.

First results of the nuGeN experiment on coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering

The nuGeN experiment is aimed to investigate neutrino properties using antineutrinos from the reactor of the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant. The experimental setup is located at about 11 meters from the center of the 3.1 GWth reactor core. Scattering of the antineutrinos from the reactor is detected with low energy threshold high purity germanium detector. Passive and active shieldings are used to suppress all kinds of backgrounds coming from surrounding materials and cosmic radiation. The description of the experimental setup together with the first results is presented. The data taken in regimes with reactor ON (94.50 days) and reactor OFF (47.09 days) have been compared. No significant difference between spectra of two data sets is observed, i.e. no positive signals for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering are detected. Under Standard Model assumptions about coherent neutrino scattering an upper limit on a quenching parameter k < 0.26 (90 \% C.L.) in germanium has been set.

Novel NaIL detector (5x6 inch) was investigated for aims of neutron detection in wide energy range. It has been found that the detector together with its known ability to detect the γ- radiation is also allows to distinguish neutron signals in three quasi-independent ways. It sensitive to neutron fluxes on a level down to $10^{-3}$ $cm^{-2}$ $s^{-1}$. In the work intrinsic α- background and neutron detection efficiency for the NaIL detector were obtained. Experimental data was compared with results of Geant4 Monte Carlo (MC).

Search for sterile neutrinos at the DANSS experiment

DANSS is a highly segmented 1~m${}^3$ plastic scintillator detector. Its 2500 one meter long scintillator strips have a Gd-loaded reflective cover. The DANSS detector is placed under an industrial 3.1~$\mathrm{GW_{th}}$ reactor of the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant 350~km NW from Moscow. The distance to the core is varied on-line from 10.7~m to 12.7~m. The reactor building provides about 50~m water-equivalent shielding against the cosmic background. DANSS detects almost 5000 $\widetildeν_e$ per day at the closest position with the cosmic background less than 3$\%$. The inverse beta decay process is used to detect $\widetildeν_e$. Sterile neutrinos are searched for assuming the $4ν$ model (3 active and 1 sterile $ν$). The exclusion area in the $Δm_{14}^2,\sin^22θ_{14}$ plane is obtained using a ratio of positron energy spectra collected at different distances. Therefore results do not depend on the shape and normalization of the reactor $\widetildeν_e$ spectrum, as well as on the detector efficiency. Results are based on 966 thousand antineutrino events collected at 3 distances from the reactor core. The excluded area covers a wide range of the sterile neutrino parameters up to $\sin^22θ_{14}<0.01$ in the most sensitive region.

Sensitive neutron detection method using delayed coincidence transitions in existing iodine-containing detectors

This letter explains a new, highly sensitive method for the detection of neutrons, which uses the T$_{1/2}=845$ ns delay in the decay of $^{128}$I at the 137.8 keV energy level, resulting from the capture of thermal neutrons by iodine nuclei in NaI and CsI scintillation detectors. The use of delayed coincidence techniques with a several $μ{\rm s}$ time frame for delayed events allows for the highly effective discrimination of neutron events from any existing background signals. A comparison of ambient neutron measurements between those identified through the suggested method from a cylindrical, ø$\, 63 \, {\rm mm}\times 63\, {\rm mm}$ NaI(Tl) scintillator and those from a low-background proportional $^3$He counter experimentally demonstrates the efficacy of this neutron detection method. For an isotropic, $4π$, thermal neutron flux of 1 ${\rm n}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$, the absolute sensitivity of the NaI detector was found to be $6.5 \pm 1\, {\rm counts}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$ with a background of $0.8\, {\rm events}\, {\rm day}^{-1}$ and a delay time frame of $Δ{\rm t}=1\, μ$s. The proposed method can provide low-background experiments, using NaI or CsI, with measurements of the rate and stability of incoming neutron flux to a greater accuracy than 10$^{-8}\, {\rm n}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$.

Characterisation of Medipix3 Silicon Detectors in a Charged-Particle Beam

While designed primarily for X-ray imaging applications, the Medipix3 ASIC can also be used for charged-particle tracking. In this work, results from a beam test at the CERN SPS with irradiated and non-irradiated sensors are presented and shown to be in agreement with simulation, demonstrating the suitability of the Medipix3 ASIC as a tool for characterising pixel sensors.
