Effective Spin Quantum Phases in Systems of Trapped Ions

A system of trapped ions under the action of off--resonant standing--waves can be used to simulate a variety of quantum spin models. In this work, we describe theoretically quantum phases that can be observed in the simplest realization of this idea: quantum Ising and XY models. Our numerical calculations with the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method show that experiments with ion traps should allow one to access general properties of quantum critical systems. On the other hand, ion trap quantum spin models show a few novel features due to the peculiarities of induced effective spin--spin interactions which lead to interesting effects like long--range quantum correlations and the coexistence of different spin phases.

Renormalization algorithm for the calculation of spectra of interacting quantum systems

We present an algorithm for the calculation of eigenstates with definite linear momentum in quantum lattices. Our method is related to the Density Matrix Renormalization Group, and makes use of the distribution of multipartite entanglement to build variational wave--functions with translational symmetry. Its virtues are shown in the study of bilinear--biquadratic S=1 chains.

Bose-Einstein Condensation and strong-correlation behavior of phonons in ion traps

We show that the dynamics of phonons in a set of trapped ions interacting with lasers is described by a Bose-Hubbard model whose parameters can be externally adjusted. We investigate the possibility of observing several quantum many-body phenomena, including (quasi) Bose-Einstein condensation as well as a superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition.

DMRG and periodic boundary conditions: a quantum information perspective

We introduce a picture to analyze the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) numerical method from a quantum information perspective. This leads us to introduce some modifications for problems with periodic boundary conditions in which the results are dramatically improved. The picture also explains some features of the method in terms of entanglement and teleportation.

Effective quantum spin systems with ion traps

We show that the physical system consisting of trapped ions interacting with lasers may undergo a rich variety of quantum phase transitions. By changing the laser intensities and polarizations the dynamics of the internal states of the ions can be controlled, in such a way that an Ising or Heisenberg-like interaction is induced between effective spins. Our scheme allows us to build an analogue quantum simulator of spin systems with trapped ions, and observe and analyze quantum phase transitions with unprecedent opportunities for the measurement and manipulation of spins.

Dynamics of the excitations of a quantum dot in a microcavity

We study the dynamics of a quantum dot embedded in a three-dimensional microcavity in the strong coupling regime in which the quantum dot exciton has an energy close to the frequency of a confined cavity mode. Under the continuous pumping of the system, confined electron and hole can recombine either by spontaneous emission through a leaky mode or by stimulated emission of a cavity mode that can escape from the cavity. The numerical integration of a master equation including all these effects gives the dynamics of the density matrix. By using the quantum regression theorem, we compute the first and second order coherence functions required to calculate the photon statistics and the spectrum of the emitted light. Our main result is the determination of a range of parameters in which a state of cavity modes with poissonian or sub-poissonian (non-classical) statistics can be built up within the microcavity. Depending on the relative values of pumping and rate of stimulated emission, either one or two peaks close to the excitation energy of the dot and/or to the natural frequency of the cavity are observed in the emission spectrum. The physics behind these results is discussed.

Linewidth of a polariton laser: Theoretical analysis of self-interaction effects

Polaritons in semiconductor microcavities can experience a Bose-Einstein condensation experimentally detectable in the spectrum of the emitted light. Scattering with noncondensed particles as well as self-interaction in the condensate provoke phase-diffusion limiting the coherence of the polariton condensate. We present a theoretical analysis of self-interaction effects on the lineshape of the emission from a polariton laser. Our calculations, for CdTe microcavities, show that there is an optimum pump at which the linewidth of the emitted light is reduced down to 1 $μ$ eV.

Polariton dynamics and Bose-Einstein condensation in semiconductor microcavities

We present a theoretical model that allows us to describe the polariton dynamics in a semiconductor microcavity at large densities, for the case of non-resonant excitation. Exciton-polariton scattering from a thermalized exciton reservoir is identified as the main mechanism for relaxation into the lower polariton states. A maximum in the polariton distribution that shifts towards lower energies with increasing pump-power or temperature is shown, in agreement with recent experiments. Above a critical pump-power, macroscopic occupancies (5 \times 10^4) can be achieved in the lowest energy polariton state. Our model predicts the possibility of Bose-Einstein Condensation of polaritons, driven by exciton-polariton interaction, at densities well below the saturation density for CdTe microcavities.

Fermi-edge singularities in linear and non-linear ultrafast spectroscopy

We discuss Fermi-edge singularity effects on the linear and nonlinear transient response of an electron gas in a doped semiconductor. We use a bosonization scheme to describe the low energy excitations, which allows to compute the time and temperature dependence of the response functions. Coherent control of the energy absorption at resonance is analyzed in the linear regime. It is shown that a phase-shift appears in the coherent control oscillations, which is not present in the excitonic case. The nonlinear response is calculated analytically and used to predict that four wave-mixing experiments would present a Fermi-edge singularity when the exciting energy is varied. A new dephasing mechanism is predicted in doped samples that depends linearly on temperature and is produced by the low-energy bosonic excitations in the conduction band.

Microscopic theory for quantum mirages in quantum corrals

Scanning tunneling microscopy permits to image the Kondo resonance of a single magnetic atom adsorbed on a metallic surface. When the magnetic impurity is placed at the focus of an elliptical quantum corral, a Kondo resonance has been recently observed both on top of the impurity and on top of the focus where no magnetic impurity is present. This projection of the Kondo resonance to a remote point on the surface is referred to as quantum mirage. We present a quantum mechanical theory for the quantum mirage inside an ideal quantum corral and predict that the mirage will occur in corrals with shapes other than elliptical.
