Far from equilibrium monopole dynamics in spin ice

Condensed matter in the low temperature limit reveals much exotic physics associated with unusual orders and excitations, examples ranging from helium superfluidity to magnetic monopoles in spin ice. The far-from-equilibrium physics of such low temperature states may be even more exotic, yet to access it in the laboratory remains a challenge. Here we demonstrate a simple and robust technique, the 'magnetothermal avalanche quench', and its use in the controlled creation of nonequilibrium populations of magnetic monopoles in spin ice at millikelvin temperatures. These populations are found to exhibit spontaneous dynamical effects that typify far-from-equilibrium systems, yet are captured by simple models. Our method thus opens the door to the study of far-from-equilibrium states in spin ice and other exotic magnets.

Stripe disorder and dynamics in the hole-doped antiferromagnetic insulator La5/3Sr1/3CoO4

We report on an investigation into the dynamics of the stripe phase of La5/3Sr1/3CoO4, a material recently shown to have an hour-glass magnetic excitation spectrum. A combination of magnetic susceptibility, muon-spin relaxation and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements strongly suggest that the physics is determined by a disordered configuration of charge and spin stripes whose frustrated magnetic degrees of freedom are strongly dynamic at high temperature and which freeze out in a glassy manner as the temperature is lowered. Our results broadly confirm a recent theoretical prediction, but show that the charge quenching remains incomplete well below the charge ordering temperature and reveal, in detail, the manner in which the magnetic degrees of freedom are frozen.

Circularly Polarised X-ray Scattering Investigation of Spin-Lattice Coupling in TbMnO$_3$ in Crossed Electric and Magnetic Fields

We present a study of the magnetic and crystallographic structure of TbMnO$_3$ in the presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields using circularly polarised X-ray non-resonant scattering. A comprehensive account is presented of the scattering theory and data analysis methods used in our earlier studies, and in addition we present new high magnetic field data and its analysis. We discuss in detail how polarisation analysis was used to reveal structural information, including the arrangement of Tb moments which we proposed for $H = 0$ T, and how the diffraction data for $H H_C$ as for $H < H_C$. Finally some observations regarding the kinetics and the conservation of domain population at the transition are described.

Crystal field states in a Quantum Spin Ice]{Crystal field states of Pr$^{3+}$ in the candidate quantum spin ice Pr$_{2}$Sn$_{2}$O$_{7}$

Neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy has been employed to study the crystal-field splitting of Pr$^{3+}$ in the pyrochlore stannate Pr$_{2}$Sn$_{2}$O$_{7}$. The crystal field has been parameterized from a profile fit to the observed neutron spectrum. The single-ion ground state is a well isolated non-Kramers doublet of $Γ_3^+$ symmetry with a large Ising-like anisotropy, $χ_{zz} /χ_\perp \approx 60$ at 10 K, but with a significant admixture of terms $| M_J \neq \pm J >$ which can give rise to quantum zero-point fluctuations. This magnetic state satisfies the requirements for quantum spin ice behavior.

Neutron scattering measurements of $dd$ and spin-orbit excitations below the Mott-Hubbard gap in CoO

Neutron scattering is used to investigate the single-ion spin and orbital excitations below the Mott-Hubbard gap in CoO. Three excitations are reported at 0.870 $\pm$ 0.009 eV, 1.84 $\pm$ 0.03, and 2.30 $\pm$ 0.15 eV. These were parameterized within a weak crystal field scheme with an intra-orbital exchange of $J(dd)$=1.3 $\pm$ 0.2 eV and a crystal field splitting 10Dq=0.94 $\pm$ 0.10 eV. A reduced spin-orbit coupling of λ=-0.016 $\pm$ 0.003 eV is derived from dilute samples of Mg$_{0.97}$Co$_{0.03}$O, measured to remove complications due to spin exchange and structural distortion parameters which split the cubic phase degeneracy of the orbital excitations complicating the inelastic spectrum. The 1.84 eV, while reported using resonant x-ray and optical techniques, was absent or weak for non resonant x-ray experiments and overlaps with the expected position of a $^{4}A_{2}$ level. This transition is absent in the dipolar approximation but expected to have a finite quadrupolar matrix element that can be observed with neutron scattering techniques at larger momentum transfers. Our results agree with a crystal field analysis (in terms of Racah parameters and Tanabe-Sugano diagrams) and with previous calculations performed using local-density band theory for Mott insulating transition metal oxides. The results also demonstrate the use of neutron scattering for measuring dipole forbidden transitions in transition metal oxide systems.

Discovery of a Three-dimensional Topological Dirac Semimetal, Na3Bi

Three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) represent a novel state of quantum matter that can be viewed as '3D graphene'. In contrast to two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermions in graphene or on the surface of 3D topological insulators, TDSs possess 3D Dirac fermions in the bulk. The TDS is also an important boundary state mediating numerous novel quantum states, such as topological insulators, Weyl semi-metals, Axion insulators and topological superconductors. By investigating the electronic structure of Na3Bi with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered 3D Dirac fermions with linear dispersions along all momentum directions for the first time. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the 3D Dirac fermions in Na3Bi were protected by the bulk crystal symmetry. Our results establish that Na3Bi is the first model system of 3D TDSs, which can also serve as an ideal platform for the systematic study of quantum phase transitions between rich novel topological quantum states.

The Hour-Glass Magnetic Spectrum Arising from a Striped, Cluster Spin Glass Ground State in La1.75Sr0.25CoO4

We report inelastic neutron scattering results that reveal an hour-glass magnetic excitation spectrum in La1.75Sr0.25CoO4. The magnetic spectrum is similar to that observed previously in La1.67Sr0.33CoO4, but the spectral features are broader. We show that the spectrum of La1.75Sr0.25CoO4 can be modeled by the spin dynamics of a system with a disordered cluster spin glass ground state. Bulk magnetization measurements are presented which support the proposed glassy ground state. The observations reiterate the importance of quasi-one-dimensional magnetic correlations and disorder for the hour-glass spectrum, and suggest that disordered spin and charge stripes exist at lower doping in La2-xSrxCoO4 than previously thought.

Critical exponents and irreversibility lines of La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$CoO$_3$ single crystal

We have studied the dynamic and static critical behavior of spin glass transition in insulating La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$CoO$_3$ single crystal by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements in the vicinity of its freezing temperature ($T_f$). The dynamic scaling analysis of the frequency dependence of ac susceptibility data yields the characteristic time constant $τ_{0}$=1.6(9)$\times10^{-12}$ s, the dynamic critical exponent $zν$=9.5(2), and a frequency dependence factor $K$=$Δ$$T_{f}/T_{f}$($Δ$$log$$f$)=0.017, indicating that the sample enters into a canonical spin-glass phase below $T_{f}$=34.8(2) K. The scaling analysis of non-linear magnetization in the vicinity of $T_{f}$ through the static scaling hypothesis yields critical exponents $β$=0.89(1) and $γ$=2.9(1), which match well with that observed for well known three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg spin glasses. From the longitudinal component of zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetization measurement we have constructed the $H-T$ phase diagram which represents the field evolution of two characteristic temperatures: the upper one, $T_{w}(H)$, indicates the onset of spin freezing in a uniform external field $H$, while the lower one, $T_{s}(H)$, marks the onset of strong irreversibility of the frozen state. The low field $T_{s}(H)$ follows the critical line suggested by d'Almeida-Thouless model for canonical spin glass, whereas the $T_{w}(H)$ exhibits a reentrant behavior with a maximum in the $T_{w}(H)$ at a nonzero field above which it follows the Gabay-Toulouse (GT) critical line which is a characteristic of Heisenberg spin glass. The re-entrant behavior of the GT line resembles that predicted theoretically for $n$-component vector spin glasses in the presence of a uniaxial anisotropy field.

Development of the Magnetic Excitations of Charge-Stripe Ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) on Doping Towards Checkerboard Charge Order

The magnetic excitation spectrums of charge stripe ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) x = 0.45 and x = 0.4 were studied by inelastic neutron scattering. We found the magnetic excitation spectrum of x = 0.45 from the ordered Ni^2+ S = 1 spins to match that of checkerboard charge ordered La(1.5)Sr(0.5)NiO(4). The distinctive asymmetry in the magnetic excitations above 40 meV was observed for both doping levels, but an additional ferromagnetic mode was observed in x = 0.45 and not in the x = 0.4. We discuss the origin of crossover in the excitation spectrum between x = 0.45 and x = 0.4 with respect to discommensurations in the charge stripe structure.

Ground state in a half-doped manganite distinguished by neutron spectroscopy

We have measured the spin-wave spectrum of the half-doped bilayer manganite Pr(Ca,Sr)2Mn2O7 in its spin, charge, and orbital ordered phase. The measurements, which extend throughout the Brillouin zone and cover the entire one-magnon spectrum, are compared critically with spin-wave calculations for different models of the electronic ground state. The data are described very well by the Goodenough model, which has weakly interacting ferromagnetic zig-zag chains in the CE-type arrangement. A model that allows ferromagnetic dimers to form within the zigzags is inconsistent with the data. The analysis conclusively rules out the strongly bound dimer (Zener polaron) model.

High temperature onset of field-induced transitions in the spin-ice compound Dy2Ti2O7

We have studied the field-dependent ac magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of Dy2Ti2O7 spin ice along the [111] direction in the temperature range 1.8 K - 7 K. Our data reflect the onset of local spin ice order in the appearance of different field regimes. In particular, we observe a prominent feature at approximately 1.0 T that is a precursor of the low-temperature metamagnetic transition out of field-induced kagome ice, below which the kinetic constraints imposed by the ice rules manifest themselves in a substantial frequency-dependence of the susceptibility. Despite the relatively high temperatures, our results are consistent with a monopole picture, and they demonstrate that such a picture can give physical insight to the spin ice systems even outside the low-temperature, low-density limit where monopole excitations are well-defined quasiparticles.

Strongly momentum-dependent screening dynamics in La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ observed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report strongly momentum-dependent local charge screening dynamics in CE-type charge, orbital, and spin ordered La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$, based on Mn K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering data. Through a comparison with theoretical calculations, we show that the observed momentum dependence reflects highly localized, nearest neighbor screening of the transient local charge perturbation in this compound with an exciton-like screening cloud, rather than delocalized screening. The size of the screening cloud is estmated to be about 0.4-0.5 interatomic distances.

Brownian Motion and Quantum Dynamics of Magnetic Monopoles in Spin Ice

Spin ice illustrates many unusual magnetic properties, including zero point entropy, emergent monopoles and a quasi liquid-gas transition. To reveal the quantum spin dynamics that underpin these phenomena is an experimental challenge. Here we show how crucial information is contained in the frequency dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and in its high frequency or adiabatic limit. These measures indicate that monopole diffusion is strictly Brownian but is underpinned by spin tunnelling and is influenced by collective monopole interactions. We also find evidence of driven monopole plasma oscillations in weak applied field, and unconventional critical behaviour in strong applied field. Our results resolve contradictions in the present understanding of spin ice, reveal unexpected physics and establish adiabatic susceptibility as a revealing characteristic of exotic spin systems.

The J_{eff}=1/2 insulator Sr3Ir2O7 studied by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The low-energy electronic structure of the J_{eff}=1/2 spin-orbit insulator Sr3Ir2O7 has been studied by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A comparison of the results for bilayer Sr3Ir2O7 with available literature data for the related single-layer compound Sr2IrO4 reveals qualitative similarities and similar J_{eff}=1/2 bandwidths for the two materials, but also pronounced differences in the distribution of the spectral weight. In particuar, photoemission from the J_{eff}=1/2 states appears to be suppressed. Yet, it is found that the Sr3Ir2O7 data are in overall better agreement with band-structure calculations than the data for Sr2IrO4.

An x-ray diffraction study of the temperature-induced structural phase transitions in SmVO3

Through powder x-ray diffraction we have investigated the structural behavior of SmVO3, in which orbital and magnetic degrees of freedom are believed to be closely coupled to the crystal lattice. We have found, contrary to previous reports, that SmVO3 exists in a single, monoclinic, phase below 200 K. The associated crystallographic distortion is then stabilized through the magnetostriction that occurs below 134 K. The crystal structure has been refined using synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction data measured throughout the structural phase diagram, showing a substantial Jahn-Teller distortion of the VO6 octahedra in the monoclinic phase, compatible with the expected G-type orbital order. Changes in the vanadium ion crystal field due to the structural and magnetic transitions have then been probed by resonant x-ray diffraction.

Persistent dynamics in the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional chain compound Rb4Cu(MoO4)3 probed with muon-spin relaxation

We report the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements on the low-dimensional antiferromagnet Rb4Cu(MoO4)3. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to 50 mK implying a ratio T_N/J<0.005 (where J is the principal exchange strength along the spin chains) and an effective ratio of interchain to intrachain exchange of |J_perp/J|<2 x 10^-3, making the material an excellent realization of a one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We probe the persistent spin excitations at low temperatures and find that ballistic spin transport dominates the excitations detected below 0.3 K.

Electric field control of chiral magnetic domains in the high-temperature multiferroic CuO

We have studied the high temperature multiferroic cupric oxide using polarized neutron diffraction as a function of temperature and applied electric field. We find that the chiral domain population can be varied using an external electric field applied along the b axis. Using representation analysis we derive the incommensurate magnetic structure in the multiferroic phase. The origin of the magnetoelectric coupling is consistent with models based on the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, but is different from the simple cycloidal mechanism.

Antiferromagnetic order and domains in Sr3Ir2O7 probed by x-ray resonant scattering

This article reports a detailed x-ray resonant scattering study of the bilayer iridate compound, Sr3Ir2O7, at the Ir L2 and L3 edges. Resonant scattering at the Ir L3 edge has been used to determine that Sr3Ir2O7 is a long-range ordered antiferromagnet below TN 230K with an ordering wavevector, q=(1/2,1/2,0). The energy resonance at the L3 edge was found to be a factor of ~30 times larger than that at the L2. This remarkable effect has been seen in the single layer compound Sr2IrO4 and has been linked to the observation of a Jeff=1/2 spin-orbit insulator. Our result shows that despite the modified electronic structure of the bilayer compound, caused by the larger bandwidth, the effect of strong spin-orbit coupling on the resonant magnetic scattering persists. Using the programme SARAh, we have determined that the magnetic order consists of two domains with propagation vectors k1=(1/2,1/2,0) and k2=(1/2,-1/2,0), respectively. A raster measurement of a focussed x-ray beam across the surface of the sample yielded images of domains of the order of 100 microns size, with odd and even L components, respectively. Fully relativistic, monoelectronic calculations (FDMNES), using the Green's function technique for a muffin-tin potential have been employed to calculate the relative intensities of the L2,3 edge resonances, comparing the effects of including spin-orbit coupling and the Hubbard, U, term. A large L3 to L2 edge intensity ratio (~5) was found for calculations including spin-orbit coupling. Adding the Hubbard, U, term resulted in changes to the intensity ratio <5%.
