Dark Matter particles in the galactic halo: results and implications from DAMA/NaI

The DAMA/NaI experiment (about 100 kg highly radiopure NaI(Tl)) was proposed, designed and realised to effectively investigate in a model independent way the presence of a Dark Matter particle component in the galactic halo by exploiting the annual modulation signature. With a total exposure of 107731 kg day, collected over seven annual cycles deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N., it has pointed out -- at 6.3 sigma C.L. -- an effect which satisfies all the peculiarities of the signature and neither systematic effects nor side reactions able to mimic the signature were found. Moreover, several (but still few with respect to the possibilities) corollary model dependent quests for the candidate particle have been carried out. In this paper the obtained results are summarized and some perspectives are discussed at some extent.

DAMA/NaI results

The DAMA/NaI set-up of the DAMA experiment has been operative during seven annual cycles and has investigated several rare processes. In particular, it has been realised in order to investigate the model independent annual modulation signature for Dark Matter particles in the galactic halo. With the total exposure collected in the seven annual cycles (107731 kg day) a model independent evidence for the presence of a Dark Matter particle component in the galactic halo has been pointed out at 6.3 sigma C.L.. Some of the many possible corollary model dependent quests for the candidate particle have been presented as well.

Results from DAMA/NaI and perspectives for DAMA/LIBRA

The about 100 kg highly radiopure NaI(Tl) set-up of the DAMA project (DAMA/NaI) took data over seven annual cycles up to July 2002 and has achieved results on various rare processes. Its main aim has actually been the exploitation of the model independent WIMP annual modulation signature. After this conference the total exposure, collected during the seven annual cycles, was released. This cumulative exposure (107731 kg day) has given a model independent evidence for the presence of a Dark Matter particle component in the galactic halo at 6.3 sigma C.L.; this main result is summarised here. Some of the many possible corollary model dependent quests for the candidate particle are mentioned. At present, after about five years of new developments, a second generation low background set-up (DAMA/LIBRA with a mass of about 250 kg NaI(Tl)) was built and is taking data since March 2003. New R&D efforts toward a possible NaI(Tl) ton set-up, we proposed in 1996, have been funded and started in 2003.

Dark Matter search

Main arguments on the Dark Matter particle direct detection approach are addressed on the basis of the work and of the results of the about 100 kg highly radiopure NaI(Tl) DAMA experiment (DAMA/NaI), which has been operative at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. for more than one decade, including the preparation. The effectiveness of the WIMP model independent annual modulation signature is pointed out by discussing the results obtained over 7 annual cycles (107731 kg day total exposure); the WIMP presence in the galactic halo is strongly supported at 6.3 standard deviation C.L. The complexity of the corollary model dependent quests for a candidate particle is also addressed and several of the many possible scenarios are examined.

DAMA results

DAMA is an observatory for rare processes based on the development and use of various kinds of radiopure scintillators. Several low background set-ups have been realized with passing and many rare processes have been investigated. Main activities are briefly summarized in the following and the main arguments on the results achieved in the investigation of the WIMP annual modulation signature are addressed. Next perspectives are also mentioned.

WIMP Search by DAMA at Gran Sasso

DAMA is searching for rare processes by developing and using several kinds of radiopure scintillators: in particular, NaI(Tl), liquid Xenon and CaF$_2$(Eu). Here only the results released so far on the WIMP annual modulation signature are summarized and compared with results from other experiments, including the recent re-analysis of CDMS-I data. Next perspectives are also shortly addressed.

Extending the DAMA annual-modulation region by inclusion of the uncertainties in the astrophysical velocities

The original annual-modulation region, singled out by the DAMA/NaI experiment for direct detection of WIMPs, is extended by taking into account the uncertainties in the galactic astrophysical velocities. Also the effect due to a possible bulk rotation for the dark matter halo is considered. We find that the range for the WIMP mass becomes 30 GeV < m_chi < 130 GeV at 1-sigma C.L. with a further extension in the upper bound, when a possible bulk rotation of the dark matter halo is taken into account. We show that the DAMA results, when interpreted in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, are consistent with a relic neutralino as a dominant component of cold dark matter (on the average in our universe and in our galactic halo). It is also discussed the discovery potential for the relevant supersymmetric configurations at accelerators of present generation.

WIMPs search by scintillators: possible strategy for annual modulation search with large-mass highly-radiopure NaI(Tl)

The DAMA experiments are running deep underground in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory. Several interesting results have been achieved so far. Here a maximum likelihood method to search for the WIMP annual modulation signature is discussed and applied to a set of preliminary test data collected with large mass highly radiopure NaI(Tl) detectors. Various related technical arguments are briefly addressed.
