Optically Pumped Polarized $^3$He$^{++}$ Ion Source Development for RHIC/EIC

The proposed polarized $^3$He$^{++}$ acceleration in RHIC and the future Electron-Ion Collider will require about $2\times10^{11}$ ions in the source pulse. A new technique had been proposed for production of high intensity polarized $^3$He$^{++}$ ion beams. It is based on ionization and accumulation of the $^3$He gas (polarized by metastability-exchange optical pumping and in the 5 T high magnetic field) in the existing Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS). A novel $^3$He cryogenic purification and storage technique was developed to provide the required gas purity. An original gas refill and polarized $^3$He gas injection to the EBIS long drift tubes, (which serves as the storage cell) were developed to ensure polarization preservation. An infrared laser system for optical pumping and polarization measurements in the high 3--5 T field has been developed. The $^3$He polarization 80--85\% (and sufficiently long $\sim30$ min relaxation time) was obtained in the \lq\lq{open}\rq\rq\ cell configuration with refilling valve tube inlet and isolation valve closed. The development of the spin-rotator and $^3$He $^4$He absolute nuclear polarimeter at 6 MeV $^3$He$^{++}$ beam energy is also presented.

A Storage Ring Experiment to Detect a Proton Electric Dipole Moment

A new experiment is described to detect a permanent electric dipole moment of the proton with a sensitivity of $10^{-29}e\cdot$cm by using polarized "magic" momentum $0.7$~GeV/c protons in an all-electric storage ring. Systematic errors relevant to the experiment are discussed and techniques to address them are presented. The measurement is sensitive to new physics beyond the Standard Model at the scale of 3000~TeV.

A Super-Conducting Linac Injector for the BNL-Ags

This paper reports on the feasibility study of a proton Super-Conducting Linac (SCL) as a new injector to the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) of the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The Linac beam energy is in the range of 1.5 to 2.4 GeV. The Beam intensity is adjusted to provide an average beam power of 4 MW at the top energy of 24 GeV. The repetition rate of the SCL-AGS facility is 5 beam pulses per second.

A Super-Conducting Linac Driver for the HFBR

This paper reports on the feasibility study of a proton Super-Conducting Linac (SCL) as a driver gor the High-Flux Breader Reactor (HFBR) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The Linac operates in Continuos Wave (CW) mode to produce an average 10 MW of beam power. The Linac energy is 1.0 GeV. The average proton beam intensity is 10 mA.

The NSNS High Energy Beam Transport Line

In the National Spallation Neutron Source (NSNS) design, a 180 meter long transport line connects the 1 GeV linac to an accumulator ring. The linac beam has a current of 28 mA, pulse length of 1 ms, and 60 Hz rep rate. The high energy transport line consists of sixteen 60 degrees FODO cells, and accommodates a 90 degrees achromatic bend, an energy compressor, collimators, part of injection system, and enough diagnostic devices to measure the beam quality before injection. To reduce the uncontrolled beam losses, this line has nine beam halo scrapers and very tight tolerances on both transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics under space charge conditions. The design of this line is presented.

The Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART)

Projections of charged particle beam current density (profiles) are frequently used as a measure of beam position and size. In conventional practice only two projections, usually horizontal and vertical, are measured. This puts a severe limit on the detail of information that can be achieved. A third projection provides a significant improvement. The Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART) uses three or more projections to reconstruct 3-dimensional density profiles. At the 200 MeV H- linac, we have used this technique to measure beam density, and it has proved very helpful, especially in helping determine if there is any coupling present in x-y phase space. We will present examples of measurements of current densities using this technique.

Comparisons Between Modeling and Measured Performance of the BNL Linac

Quite good agreement has been achieved between computer modeling and actual performance of the Brookhaven 200 MeV Linac. We will present comparisons between calculated and measured performance for the beam transport through the RFQ, the 6 meter transport from RFQ to the linac and meching and transport through the linac.

RFQ-DRL MATCHING SOLUTIONS FOR DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS

The Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) has a FODO lattice and Drift-Tube-Linacs (DTL) in general also have FODO lattices. Therefore the natural solution for the matching between these is a FODO lattice. For matching in all three planes one then needs sixteen degrees of freedom. However, different requirements, depending on the applications, may change this solution. For example, in the production environment (like medical and industrial applications), one needs fixed current and fixed beam quality. On the other hand, in the research environment one not only needs all degrees of freedom, but may also want to chop of beam pulse. This paper discusses matching solutions for these different requirements.
