Artificial Intelligence for the Electron Ion Collider (AI4EIC)

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a state-of-the-art facility for studying the strong force, is expected to begin commissioning its first experiments in 2028. This is an opportune time for artificial intelligence (AI) to be included from the start at this facility and in all phases that lead up to the experiments. The second annual workshop organized by the AI4EIC working group, which recently took place, centered on exploring all current and prospective application areas of AI for the EIC. This workshop is not only beneficial for the EIC, but also provides valuable insights for the newly established ePIC collaboration at EIC. This paper summarizes the different activities and R&D projects covered across the sessions of the workshop and provides an overview of the goals, approaches and strategies regarding AI/ML in the EIC community, as well as cutting-edge techniques currently studied in other experiments.

Absence of superconductivity in the Hubbard dimer model for kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2X

In the most studied family of organic superconductors kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2X, the BEDT-TTF molecules that make up the conducting planes are coupled as dimers. For some anions X, an antiferromagnetic insulator is found at low temperatures adjacent to superconductivity. With an average of one hole carrier per dimer, the BEDT-TTF band is effectively 1/2-filled. Numerous theories have suggested that fluctuations of the magnetic order can drive superconducting pairing in these models, even as direct calculations of superconducting pairing in monomer 1/2-filled band models find no superconductivity. Here we present accurate zero-temperature Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations of a dimerized lattice with one hole per dimer. While we do find an antiferromagnetic state in our results, we find no evidence for superconducting pairing. This further demonstrates that magnetic fluctuations in the effective 1/2-filled band approach do not drive superconductivity in these and related materials.

Cooperative enhancement of superconducting correlations by electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in the quarter-filled band

We present the results of Quantum Monte Carlo calculations for a two dimensional frustrated Hubbard model coupled to bond phonons. The model is known to have a d-wave superconducting ground state in the limit of large phonon frequency for sufficiently strong electron-phonon coupling. In the absence of electron-phonon coupling the Hubbard interaction U enhances superconducting pairing in the quarter-filled (density $\rho$ = 0.5) band. We show here that at $\rho$ = 0.5 electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions cooperatively reinforce d-wave pairing, while competing with each other at all other densities. Cooperative degrees of freedom are found in many phase transitions and are essential to understanding superconductivity in strongly correlated materials.

Online Monitoring of the Osiris Reactor with the Nucifer Neutrino Detector

Originally designed as a new nuclear reactor monitoring device, the Nucifer detector has successfully detected its first neutrinos. We provide the second shortest baseline measurement of the reactor neutrino flux. The detection of electron antineutrinos emitted in the decay chains of the fission products, combined with reactor core simulations, provides an new tool to assess both the thermal power and the fissile content of the whole nuclear core and could be used by the Inter- national Agency for Atomic Energy (IAEA) to enhance the Safeguards of civil nuclear reactors. Deployed at only 7.2m away from the compact Osiris research reactor core (70MW) operating at the Saclay research centre of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), the experiment also exhibits a well-suited configuration to search for a new short baseline oscillation. We report the first results of the Nucifer experiment, describing the performances of the 0.85m3 detector remotely operating at a shallow depth equivalent to 12m of water and under intense background radiation conditions. Based on 145 (106) days of data with reactor ON (OFF), leading to the detection of an estimated 40760 electron antineutrinos, the mean number of detected antineutrinos is 281 +- 7(stat) +- 18(syst) electron antineutrinos/day, in agreement with the prediction 277(23) electron antineutrinos/day. Due the the large background no conclusive results on the existence of light sterile neutrinos could be derived, however. As a first societal application we quantify how antineutrinos could be used for the Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement.

Spin noise spectroscopy beyond thermal equilibrium and linear response

Per the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, the information obtained from spin fluctuation studies in thermal equilibrium is necessarily constrained by the system's linear response functions. However, by including weak radiofrequency magnetic fields, we demonstrate that intrinsic and random spin fluctuations even in strictly unpolarized ensembles \emph{can} reveal underlying patterns of correlation and coupling beyond linear response, and can be used to study non-equilibrium and even multiphoton coherent spin phenomena. We demonstrate this capability in a classical vapor of $^{41}$K alkali atoms, where spin fluctuations alone directly reveal Rabi splittings, the formation of Mollow triplets and Autler-Townes doublets, ac Zeeman shifts, and even nonlinear multiphoton coherences.

Grounded Semantic Composition for Visual Scenes

We present a visually-grounded language understanding model based on a study of how people verbally describe objects in scenes. The emphasis of the model is on the combination of individual word meanings to produce meanings for complex referring expressions. The model has been implemented, and it is able to understand a broad range of spatial referring expressions. We describe our implementation of word level visually-grounded semantics and their embedding in a compositional parsing framework. The implemented system selects the correct referents in response to natural language expressions for a large percentage of test cases. In an analysis of the system's successes and failures we reveal how visual context influences the semantics of utterances and propose future extensions to the model that take such context into account.

Photoproduction of $ψ'$ as a Test of Color-Octet Model

We have calculated the cross section of $ψ'$ photoproduction at small-$p_{T}$ regions in polarized $γp$ collisions for testing the color-octet model, which is based on NRQCD factorization formalism. We show that the measurement of the two-spin asymmetry of this process might be effective to constrain the value of NRQCD matrix elements.

The STAR Silicon Strip Detector (SSD)

The STAR Silicon Strip Detector (SSD) completes the three layers of the Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) to make an inner tracking system located inside the Time Projection Chamber (TPC). This additional fourth layer provides two dimensional hit position and energy loss measurements for charged particles, improving the extrapolation of TPC tracks through SVT hits. To match the high multiplicity of central Au+Au collisions at RHIC the double sided silicon strip technology was chosen which makes the SSD a half million channels detector. Dedicated electronics have been designed for both readout and control. Also a novel technique of bonding, the Tape Automated Bonding (TAB), was used to fullfill the large number of bounds to be done. All aspects of the SSD are shortly described here and test performances of produced detection modules as well as simulated results on hit reconstruction are given.

An insulating grid spacer for large-area MICROMEGAS chambers

We present an original design for large area gaseous detectors based on the MICROMEGAS technology. This technology incorporates an insulating grid, sandwiched between the micro-mesh and the anode-pad plane, which provides an uniform 200 $\mu$m amplification gap. The uniformity of the amplification gap thickness has been verified under several experimental conditions. The gain performances of the detector are presented and compared to the values obtained with detectors using cylindrical micro spacers. The new design presents several technical and financial advantages.

Two large-area anode-pad MICROMEGAS chambers as the basic elements of a pre-shower detector

The design of a detector based on MICROMEGAS (MICRO MEsh GAseous Structure) technology is presented. Our detector is characterized by a large active area of 398(\times)281 mm(^{2}), a pad read-out with 20(\times)22 mm(^{2}) segmentation, and an uniform amplification gap obtained by insulating spacers (100 (\mu)m high and 200 (\mu)m in diameter). The performances of several prototypes have been evaluated under irradiation with secondary beams of 2 GeV/c momentum charged pions and electrons. We consider such a detector as the basic element for a pre-shower detector to equip the PHOton Spectrometer (PHOS) of the ALICE experiment. Its assets are modularity, small amount of material, robustness and low cost.

Is there window for "supersoft" Pomeron in $J/ψ$ photoproduction at low energy?

The low energy $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross-section has been studied on the basis of the Pomeron model. To incorporate the discrepancy between experimental data and the predictionns by the conventional models, i.e. the sum of the soft Pomeron with intercept 1.08 and the hard Pomeron with intercept 1.418, a Regge trajectory associated with a scalar meson (f,a) exchange which we call "supersoft" Pomeron, is introduced additionally. To distinguish between the conventional model and this new additional Pomeron, observations related to other polarization observables in upcoming polarized experiments are discussed.

$ψ'$ productions as a test of color-octet mechanism

To test the color-octet model of heavy quarkonium productions, we propose $ψ'$-productions at small-$p_T$ regions in polarized $pp$ collisions for the forthcoming RHIC polarized experiments, whose experimental test at $\sqrt s=50$ GeV might be very promising.

Hard Processes with Spin-Dependent Parton Distributions

To test a possible color-octet contribution of heavy quarkonium productions, we propose $ψ$'-productions for small-$p_T$ regions, where the color-singlet $ψ$' state cannot be produced by the gluon-gluon fusion owing to charge conjugation. We also point out that these processes are very useful to deduce informations of spin-dependent gluon distributions $Δg$.
