Nonsingular electrovacuum solutions with dynamically generated cosmological constant

We consider static spherically symmetric configurations in a Palatini extension of General Relativity including $R^2$ and Ricci-squared terms, which is known to replace the central singularity by a wormhole in the electrovacuum case. We modify the matter sector of the theory by adding to the usual Maxwell term a nonlinear electromagnetic extension which is known to implement a confinement mechanism in flat space. One feature of the resulting theory is that the non-linear electric field leads to a dynamically generated cosmological constant. We show that with this matter source the solutions of the model are asymptotically de Sitter and possess a wormhole topology. We discuss in some detail the conditions that guarantee the absence of singularities and of traversable wormholes.

Importance of torsion and invariant volumes in Palatini theories of gravity

We study the field equations of extensions of General Relativity formulated within a metric-affine formalism setting torsion to zero (Palatini approach). We find that different (second-order) dynamical equations arise depending on whether torsion is set to zero i) a priori or ii) a posteriori, i.e., before or after considering variations of the action. Considering a generic family of Ricci-squared theories, we show that in both cases the connection can be decomposed as the sum of a Levi-Civita connection and terms depending on a vector field. However, while in case i) this vector field is related to the symmetric part of the connection, in ii) it comes from the torsion part and, therefore, it vanishes once torsion is completely removed. Moreover, the vanishing of this torsion-related vector field immediately implies the vanishing of the antisymmetric part of the Ricci tensor, which therefore plays no role in the dynamics. Related to this, we find that the Levi-Civita part of the connection is due to the existence of an invariant volume associated to an auxiliary metric $h_{μν}$, which is algebraically related with the physical metric $g_{μν}$.

Thermodynamic analysis of black hole solutions in gravitating nonlinear electrodynamics

We perform a general study of the thermodynamic properties of static electrically charged black hole solutions of nonlinear electrodynamics minimally coupled to gravitation in three space dimensions. The Lagrangian densities governing the dynamics of these models in flat space are defined as arbitrary functions of the gauge field invariants, constrained by some requirements for physical admissibility. The exhaustive classification of these theories in flat space, in terms of the behaviour of the Lagrangian densities in vacuum and on the boundary of their domain of definition, defines twelve families of admissible models. When these models are coupled to gravity, the flat space classification leads to a complete characterization of the associated sets of gravitating electrostatic spherically symmetric solutions by their central and asymptotic behaviours. We focus on nine of these families, which support asymptotically Schwarzschild-like black hole configurations, for which the thermodynamic analysis is possible and pertinent. In this way, the thermodynamic laws are extended to the sets of black hole solutions of these families, for which the generic behaviours of the relevant state variables are classified and thoroughly analyzed in terms of the aforementioned boundary properties of the Lagrangians. Moreover, we find universal scaling laws (which hold and are the same for all the black hole solutions of models belonging to any of the nine families) running the thermodynamic variables with the electric charge and the horizon radius. These scale transformations form a one-parameter multiplicative group, leading to universal "renormalization group"-like first-order differential equations. The beams of characteristics of these equations generate the full set of black hole states associated to any of these gravitating nonlinear electrodynamics...

Semiclassical geons as solitonic black hole remnants

We find that the end state of black hole evaporation could be represented by non-singular and without event horizon stable solitonic remnants with masses of the order the Planck scale and up to 16 units of charge. Though these objects are locally indistinguishable from spherically symmetric, massive electric (or magnetic) charges, they turn out to be sourceless geons containing a wormhole generated by the electromagnetic field. Our results are obtained by interpreting semiclassical corrections to Einstein's theory in the first-order (Palatini) formalism, which yields second-order equations and avoids the instabilities of the usual (metric) formulation of quadratic gravity. We also discuss the potential relevance of these solutions for primordial black holes and the dark matter problem.

Deformation method for generalized Abelian Higgs-Chern-Simons models

We present an extension of the deformation method applied to self-dual solutions of generalized Abelian Higgs-Chern-Simons models. Starting from a model defined by a potential $V(| ϕ|)$ and a non-canonical kinetic term $ω(| ϕ|) | D_μϕ|^2$ whose analytical domain wall solutions are known, we show that this method allows to obtain an uncountable number of new analytical solutions of new models defined by other functions $\widetilde{V}$ and $\widetildeω$. We present some examples of deformation functions leading to new families of models and their associated analytic solutions.

Charged black hole solutions of non-linear electrodynamics and generalized gauge field theories

We summarize the main features of a class of \emph{asymptotically anomalous} (asymptotically flat, but non Schwarzschild-like) gravitational configurations in models of gravitating non-linear electrodynamics in three space dimensions, whose Lagrangian densities are defined as arbitrary functions of the two field invariants and constrained by several physical admissibility conditions. This class of models and their associated electrostatic spherically symmetric black hole solutions are characterized by the behaviours of the Lagrangian densities around the vacuum and at the boundary of their domain of definition.

Nonsingular Black Holes in Palatini Extensions of General Relativity

We discuss static, spherically symmetric solutions with an electric field in a quadratic extension of general relativity formulated in the Palatini approach (assuming that metric and connection are independent fields). Unlike the usual metric formulation of this theory, the field equations are second-order and ghost-free. It is found that the resulting black holes present a central core whose area is proportional to the Planck area times the number of charges. Some of these solutions are nonsingular. In this case, the charge-to-mass ratio implies that the core matter density is independent of the specific amounts of charge and mass and of order the Planck density.

Charged black holes in Palatini $f(R)$ theories

In $f(R)$ extensions of General Relativity the Palatini approach provides ghost-free theories with second-order field equations and allows to obtain charged black hole solutions which depart from the standard Reissner-Nordström solution.

Black holes from generalized gauge field theories

We summarize the main results of a broad analysis on electrostatic, spherically symmetric (ESS) solutions of a class of non-linear electrodynamics models minimally coupled to gravitation. Such models are defined as arbitrary functions of the two quadratic field invariants, constrained by several physical admissibility requirements, and split into different families according to the behaviour of these lagrangian density functions in vacuum and on the boundary of their domains of definition. Depending on these behaviours the flat-space energy of the ESS field can be finite or divergent. For each model we qualitatively study the structure of its associated gravitational configurations, which can be asymptotically \emph{Schwarzschild-like} or with an anomalous \emph{non Schwarzschild-like} behaviour at $r \rightarrow \infty$ (but being asymptotically flat and well behaved anyhow). The extension of these results to the non-abelian case is also briefly considered.

Black hole formation from a null fluid in extended Palatini gravity

We study the formation and perturbation of black holes by null fluxes of neutral matter in a quadratic extension of General Relativity formulated a la Palatini. Working in a spherically symmetric space-time, we obtain an exact analytical solution for the metric that extends the usual Vaidya-type solution to this type of theories. We find that the resulting space-time is formally that of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole but with an effective charge term carrying the wrong sign in front of it. This effective charge is directly related to the luminosity function of the radiation stream. When the ingoing flux vanishes, the charge term disappears and the space-time relaxes to that of a Schwarzschild black hole. We provide two examples that illustrate the formation of a black hole from Minkowski space and the perturbation by a finite pulse of radiation of an existing Schwarzschild black hole.

Reissner-Nordström black holes in extended Palatini theories

We study static, spherically symmetric solutions with an electric field in an extension of general relativity (GR) containing a Ricci-squared term and formulated in the Palatini formalism. We find that all the solutions present a central core whose area is proportional to the Planck area times the number of charges. Far from the core, curvature invariants quickly tend to those of the usual Reissner-Nordström solution, though the structure of horizons may be different. In fact, besides the structures found in the Reissner-Nordström solution of GR, we find black hole solutions with just one nondegenerate horizon (Schwarzschild-like), and nonsingular black holes and naked cores. The charge-to-mass ratio of the nonsingular solutions implies that the core matter density is independent of the specific amounts of charge and mass and of order the Planck density. We discuss the physical implications of these results for astrophysical and microscopic black holes, construct the Penrose diagrams of some illustrative cases, and show that the maximal analytical extension of the nonsingular solutions implies a bounce of the radial coordinate.

Nonsingular black holes in quadratic Palatini gravity

We find that if general relativity is modified at the Planck scale by a Ricci-squared term, electrically charged black holes may be nonsingular. These objects concentrate their mass in a microscopic sphere of radius $r_{core}\approx N_q^{1/2}l_P/3$, where $l_P$ is the Planck length and $N_q$ is the number of electric charges. The singularity is avoided if the mass of the object satisfies the condition $M_0^2\approx m_P^2 α_{em}^{3/2} N_q^3/2$, where $m_P$ is the Planck mass and $α_{em}$ is the fine-structure constant. For astrophysical black holes this amount of charge is so small that their external horizon almost coincides with their Schwarzschild radius. We work within a first-order (Palatini) approach.

Deforming solitons in generalized Abelian Higgs models

This work deals with several aspects of the extension to Abelian Higgs models of the deformation method originally developed for scalar field models. We present several examples allowing to transform self-dual solutions of different generalized Abelian Higgs models into scalar field models with or without a gauge field component. This is done through a parametrization of the soliton orbit in terms of the sine-Gordon static kink. We extend these ideas to a nonAbelian Higgs model.

Compact vortex in a generalized Born-Infeld model

We study vortexlike solutions in a generalized Born-Infeld model. The model is driven by two distinct parameters, one which deals with the Born-Infeld term, and the other, which controls the presence of high-order power term in the covariant derivative of the Higgs field. We numerically solve the equations of motion and depict the main vortex features, for several values of the two parameters of the model. The results indicate the presence of compact vortex, when the parameter responsible for the high-order power in the derivative increases to sufficiently large values.

Palatini $f(R)$ Black Holes in Nonlinear Electrodynamics

The electrically charged Born-Infeld black holes in the Palatini formalism for $f(R)$ theories are analyzed. Specifically we study those supported by a theory $f(R)=R\pm R^2/R_P$, where $R_P$ is Planck's curvature. These black holes only differ from their General Relativity counterparts very close to the center, but may give rise to different geometrical structures in terms of inner horizons. The nature and strength of the central singularities are also significantly affected. In particular, for the model $f(R)=R - R^2/R_P$ the singularity is shifted to a finite radius, $r_+$, and the Kretschmann scalar diverges only as $1/(r-r_+)^{2}$.

Generalized sine-Gordon solitons

In this paper we construct analytical self-dual soliton solutions in (1+1) dimensions for two families of models which can be seen as generalizations of the sine-Gordon system but where the kinetic term is non-canonical. For that purpose we use a projection method applied to the Sine-Gordon soliton. We focus our attention on the wall and lump-like soliton solutions of these k-field models. These solutions and their potentials reduce to those of the Klein-Gordon kink and the standard lump for the case of canonical kinetic term. As we increase the non-linearity on the kinetic term the corresponding potentials get modified and the nature of the soliton may change, in particular, undergoing a topology modification. The procedure constructed here is shown to be a sort of generalization of the deformation method for a specific class of k-field models.

Asymptotically anomalous black hole configurations in gravitating nonlinear electrodynamics

We analyze the class of non-linear electrodynamics minimally coupled to gravitation supporting asymptotically flat \textit{non Schwarzschild-like} elementary solutions. The Lagrangian densities governing the dynamics of these models in flat space are defined and fully characterized as a subclass of the set of functions of the two standard field invariants, restricted by requirements of regularity, parity invariance and positivity of the energy, which are necessary conditions for the theories to be physically admissible. Such requirements allow for a complete characterization and classification of the geometrical structures of the elementary solutions for the corresponding gravity-coupled models. In particular, an immediate consequence of the requirement of positivity of the energy is the asymptotic flatness of gravitating elementary solutions for any admissible model. The present analysis, together with the (already published) one concerning the full class of admissible gravitating non-linear electrodynamics supporting asymptotically flat \textit{Schwarzschild-like} elementary solutions, completes and exhausts the study of the gravitating point-like charge problem for this kind of models.
