Constancy of the bilayer splitting as a function of doping in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$

Using high energy resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we have resolved the bilayer splitting effect in a wide range of dopings of the bilayer cuprate $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$. This bilayer splitting is due to a nonvanishing intracell coupling $t_{\perp}$, and contrary to expectations, it is not reduced in the underdoped materials. This has implications for understanding the increased c-axis confinement in underdoped materials.

Fermi Surface Nesting and Nanoscale Fluctuating Charge/Orbital Ordering in Colossal Magnetoresistive Oxides

We used high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to reveal the Fermi surface and key transport parameters of the metallic state of the layered Colossal Magnetoresistive (CMR) oxide La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7. With these parameters the calculated in-plane conductivity is nearly one order of magnitude larger than the measured DC conductivity. This discrepancy can be accounted for by including the pseudogap which removes at least 90% of the spectral weight at the Fermi energy. Key to the pseudogap and many other properties are the parallel straight Fermi surface sections which are highly susceptible to nesting instabilities. These nesting instabilities produce nanoscale fluctuating charge/orbital modulations which cooperate with Jahn-Teller distortions and compete with the electron itinerancy favored by double exchange.

Doubling of the bands in overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-probable evidence for c-axis bilayer coupling

We present high resolution ARPES data of the bilayer superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) showing a clear doubling of the near EF bands. This splitting approaches zero along the (0,0)-(pi,pi) nodal line and is not observed in single layer Bi2Sr2CuO6 (Bi2201), suggesting that the splitting is due to the long sought after bilayer splitting effect. The splitting has a magnitude of approximately 75 meV near the middle of the zone, extrapolating to about 100 meV near the (pi,0) point

Fermi Surface Topology of Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+d} at hν=33eV: hole or electron-like?

We present new results from Angle-Resolved Photoemission experiments (ARPES) on overdoped Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+d} (BSCCO) crystals. With greatly improved energy and momentum resolution, we clearly identify the existence of electron-like portions of the Fermi Surface (FS) near \bar{M} at hν=33eV. This is consistent with previously reported data and is robust against various FS crossing criteria. It is not due to an artifact induced from \vec{k}-dependent matrix element effects. We also present evidence for a breakage in the FS pointing to the possible existence of two types of electronic components.

Temperature-Dependent Pseudogaps in Colossal Magnetoresistive Oxides

Direct electronic structure measurements of a variety of the colossal magnetoresistive oxides show the presence of a pseudogap at the Fermi energy E_F which drastically suppresses the electron spectral function at E_F. The pseudogap is a strong function of the layer number of the samples (sample dimensionality) and is strongly temperature dependent, with the changes beginning at the ferromagnetic transition temperature T_c. These trends are consistent with the major transport trends of the CMR oxides, implying a direct relationship between the pseudogap and transport, including the "colossal" conductivity changes which occur across T_c. The k-dependence of the temperature-dependent effects indicate that the pseudogap observed in these compounds is not due to the extrinsic effects proposed by Joynt.

A re-examination of the electronic structure of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+d} and Bi_2Sr_2Cu_1O_{6+d} - An electron-like Fermi Surface and the absence of flat bands at $E_F$

We present a re-examination of the electronic structure and Fermi Surface (FS) of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) as obtained from angle-resolved photoemission experiments. By applying a stricter set of FS crossing criteria as well as by varying the incident photon energy outside the usual range, we have found very different behavior from that previously observed. In particular we have found an electron-like FS centered around the Gamma point, and the flat bands at E_F near the M point of the zone are absent. These results are robust over a large range of dopings and from single to double layer samples.

Measurement of an Anisotropic Energy Gap in Single Plane Bi_2Sr_(2-x)La_xCuO_(6+d)

We report angle-resolved photoemission spectra both above and below T_c in the single-plane cuprate superconductor Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+d}. The superconducting state measurements show a highly anisotropic excitation gap with a maximum magnitude smaller than that of the bilayer compound Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 by a factor of 3. For a range of doping, the gap persists well above T_c, behavior previously associated with underdoped bilayer cuprates. The anisotropy and magnitude of the normal-state gap are very similar to the superconducting state gap, indicating that the two gaps may have a common origin in a pairing interaction.
