Testing non-classical theories of electromagnetism with ion interferometry

We discuss using a table-top ion interferometer to search for deviations from Coulomb's inverse-square law. Such deviations would result from non-classical effects such at a non-zero photon rest mass. We discuss the theory behind the proposed measurement, explain which fundamental, experimentally controllable parameters are the relevant figures of merit, and calculate the expected performance of such a device in terms of these parameters. The sensitivity to deviations in the exponent of the inverse-square law is predicted to be a few times $10^{-22}$, an improvement by five orders of magnitude over current experiments. It could measure a non-zero photon rest mass smaller than $9\times10^{-50}$ grams, nearly 100 times smaller than current laboratory experiments.

Long-Term Stability of an Area-Reversible Atom-Interferometer Sagnac Gyroscope

We report on a study of the long-term stability and absolute accuracy of an atom interferometer gyroscope. This study included the implementation of an electro-optical technique to reverse the vector area of the interferometer for reduced systematics and a careful study of systematic phase shifts. Our data strongly suggests that drifts less than 96 $μ$deg/hr are possible after empirically removing shifts due to measured changes in temperature, laser intensity, and several other experimental parameters.

Ultracold neutral plasma expansion in two dimensions

We extend an isothermal thermal model of ultracold neutral plasma expansion to systems without spherical symmetry, and use this model to interpret new fluorescence measurements on these plasmas. By assuming a self-similar expansion, it is possible to solve the fluid equations analytically and to include velocity effects to predict the fluorescence signals. In spite of the simplicity of this approach, the model reproduces the major features of the experimental data.

Fluorescence measurements of expanding strongly-coupled neutral plasmas

We report new detailed density profile measurements in expanding strongly-coupled neutral plasmas. Using laser-induced fluorescence techniques, we determine plasma densities in the range of 10^5 to 10^9/cm^3 with a time resolution limit as small as 7 ns. Strong-coupling in the plasma ions is inferred directly from the fluorescence signals. Evidence for strong-coupling at late times is presented, confirming a recent theoretical result.

Two-photon photo-ionization of the Ca 4s3d 1D2 level in an optical dipole trap

We report an optical dipole trap for calcium. The trap is created by focusing a 488 nm argon-ion laser beam into a calcium magneto-optical trap. The argon-ion laser photo-ionizes atoms in the trap because of a near-resonance with the 4s4f 1F3 level. By measuring the dipole trap decay rate as a function of argon-ion laser intensity, we determine the 1F3 photo-ionization cross section at our wavelength to be approximately 230 Mb.

Surface Excitations in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Surface modes in a Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium atoms have been studied. We observed excitations of standing and rotating quadrupolar and octopolar modes. The modes were excited with high spatial and temporal resolution using the optical dipole force of a rapidly scanning laser beam. This novel technique is very flexible and should be useful for the study of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates and vortices.
