Probabilistic central Bell polynomials

Let Y be a random variable whose moment generating function exists in a neighborhood of the origin. In this paper, we study the probabilistic central Bell polynomials associated with random variable Y, as probabilistic extension of the central Bell polynomials. In addition, we investigate the probabilistic central factorial numbers of the second kind associated with Y and the probabilistic central Fubini polynomials associated with Y. The aim of this paper is to derive some properties, explicit expressions, certain identities and recurrence relations for those polynomials and numbers.

Diffuse Inelastic Neutron Scattering from Anharmonic Vibrations in Cuprite

Atomic vibrational dynamics in cuprite, Cu2O, was studied by inelastic neutron scattering and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations from 10 K to 900 K. Above 300 K, a diffuse inelastic intensity (DII) appeared, obscuring the high-energy phonon modes. Classical MD simulations with a machine learning interatomic potential reproduced general features of the DII, especially with a Langevin thermostat. The DII originates from random phase shifts of vibrating O-atoms that have anharmonic interactions with neighboring Cu-atoms.

Threading the spindle: a geometric study of chiral liquid crystal polymer microparticles

Polymeric particles are strong candidates for designing artificial materials capable of emulating the complex twisting-based functionality observed in biological systems. In this letter, we provide the first detailed investigation of the swelling behavior of bipolar polymer liquid crystalline microparticles. Deswelling from the spherical bipolar configuration causes the microparticle to contract anisotropically and twist in the process, resulting in a twisted spindle shaped structure. We propose a model to describe the observed spiral patterns and twisting behavior.

A nuclear quantum effect with pure anharmonicity and the anomalous thermal expansion of silicon

Despite the widespread use of silicon in modern technology, its peculiar thermal expansion is not well-understood. Adapting harmonic phonons to the specific volume at temperature, the quasiharmonic approximation, has become accepted for simulating the thermal expansion, but has given ambiguous interpretations for microscopic mechanisms. To test atomistic mechanisms, we performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments from 100-1500K on a single-crystal of silicon to measure the changes in phonon frequencies. Our state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, which fully account for phonon anharmonicity and nuclear quantum effects, reproduced the measured shifts of individual phonons with temperature, whereas quasiharmonic shifts were mostly of the wrong sign. Surprisingly, the accepted quasiharmonic model was found to predict the thermal expansion owing to a fortuitous cancellation of contributions from individual phonons.

Identities of symmetry for higher-order generalized q-Euler polyonmials

In this paper, we investigate the properties of symmetry in two variables related to multiple Euler q-l-function which interpolates higher-order q-Euler polynomials at negative integers. From our investigation, we can derive many interesting identities of symmetry in two variables related to generalized higher-order q-Euler polynomials and alternating generalized q-power sums.

Electromagnetic Spin-Orbit Interactions via Scattering

The longitudinal components of orthogonal-circularly polarized fields carry a phase singularity that changes sign depending on the polarization handedness. The addition of orbital angular momentum adds to or cancels this singularity and results in polarization-dependent scattering through round and square apertures, which we demonstrate analytically, numerically, and experimentally. By preparing the incident polarization and arranging the configuration of sub-wavelength apertures, we produce shadow-side scattered fields with arbitrary phase vorticity.

Optical studies of carrier and phonon dynamics in Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}As

We present a time-resolved optical study of the dynamics of carriers and phonons in Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}As layers for a series of Mn and hole concentrations. While band filling is the dominant effect in transient optical absorption in low-temperature-grown (LT) GaAs, band gap renormalization effects become important with increasing Mn concentration in Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}As, as inferred from the sign of the absorption change. We also report direct observation on lattice vibrations in Ga1-xMnxAs layers via reflective electro-optic sampling technique. The data show increasingly fast dephasing of LO phonon oscillations for samples with increasing Mn and hole concentration, which can be understood in term of phonon scattering by the holes.

Ultrafast spectroscopy of propagating coherent acoustic phonons in GaN/InGaN heterostructures

We show that large amplitude, coherent acoustic phonon wavepackets can be generated and detected in In$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N/GaN epilayers and heterostructures in femtosecond pump-probe differential reflectivity experiments. The amplitude of the coherent phonon increases with increasing Indium fraction $x$ and unlike other coherent phonon oscillations, both \textit{amplitude} and \textit{period} are strong functions of the laser probe energy. The amplitude of the oscillation is substantially and almost instantaneously reduced when the wavepacket reaches a GaN-sapphire interface below the surface indicating that the phonon wavepackets are useful for imaging below the surface. A theoretical model is proposed which fits the experiments well and helps to deduce the strength of the phonon wavepackets. Our model shows that localized coherent phonon wavepackets are generated by the femtosecond pump laser in the epilayer near the surface. The wavepackets then propagate through a GaN layer changing the local index of refraction, primarily through the Franz-Keldysh effect, and as a result, modulate the reflectivity of the probe beam. Our model correctly predicts the experimental dependence on probe-wavelength as well as epilayer thickness.

Exceptionally Slow Rise in Differential Reflectivity Spectra of Excitons in GaN: Effect of Excitation-induced Dephasing

Femtosecond pump-probe (PP) differential reflectivity spectroscopy (DRS) and four-wave mixing (FWM) experiments were performed simultaneously to study the initial temporal dynamics of the exciton line-shapes in GaN epilayers. Beats between the A-B excitons were found \textit{only for positive time delay} in both PP and FWM experiments. The rise time at negative time delay for the differential reflection spectra was much slower than the FWM signal or PP differential transmission spectroscopy (DTS) at the exciton resonance. A numerical solution of a six band semiconductor Bloch equation model including nonlinearities at the Hartree-Fock level shows that this slow rise in the DRS results from excitation induced dephasing (EID), that is, the strong density dependence of the dephasing time which changes with the laser excitation energy.

Spin-Landau Orbit Coupling in Units of the Flux Quantum Observed from Zeeman Splitting of a Quantum Wire Array

In Zeeman spectra of a GaAs-AlGaAs quantum wire array with superlattice period lp, the zero-field shift is found to increase in steps of (2 pi hbar/ e)lp^{-2} at the cyclotron radius Rc ~lp, lp/2, and lp/3. This shift, caused by spin-Landau orbit coupling and quantized in units of the flux quantum 2 pi hbar /e,is a manifestation of the gauge invariance, and the first observation of the flux quantization in a non-superconducting material. The quantum interference associated with the phase difference in the quantum barrier scattering is also reported.
