2-Nucleon 1-Loop Corrections to Pion Double Charge Exchange within Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory

One-loop corrections at the two-nucleon level to Pion Double Charge exchange (DCX) scattering off a nuclear target at threshold, are calculated within the framework of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory (HBChPT). An estimate for the (2-nucleon) 1-loop correction is obtained in the static limit and using an impulse approximation. We find a small (1.6%) increase relative to the leading order tree graphs.

Derivation of the Effective Pion-Nucleon Lagrangian within Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory

We develop a method for constructing the Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory Lagrangian (L_{HBChPT}), to a given chiral order, within HBChPT. We work within SU(2) theory, with only the pion field interacting with the nucleon. The main difficulties, which are solved, are to develop techniques for implementing charge conjugation invariance, and for taking the nucleon on shell, both within the nonrelativistic formalism. We obtain complete lists of independent terms in L_{HBChPT} through O(q^3) for off- shell nucleons. Then, eliminating equation-of-motion (eom) terms at the relativistic and nonrelativistic level (both within HBChPT), we obtain L_{HBCHPT} for on-shell nucleons, through O(q^3). The extension of the method (to obtain on-shell L_{HBChPT} within HBChPT) to higher orders is also discussed.

Inelastic nucleon contributions in $(e,e^\prime)$ nuclear response functions

We estimate the contribution of inelastic nucleon excitations to the $(e,e^\prime)$ inclusive cross section in the CEBAF kinematic range. Calculations are based upon parameterizations of the nucleon structure functions measured at SLAC. Nuclear binding effects are included in a vector-scalar field theory, and are assumed have a minimal effect on the nucleon excitation spectrum. We find that for $q\lsim 1$ GeV the elastic and inelastic nucleon contributions to the nuclear response functions are comparable, and can be separated, but with roughly a factor of two uncertainty in the latter from the extrapolation from data. In contrast, for $q\rsim 2$ GeV this uncertainty is greatly reduced but the elastic nucleon contribution is heavily dominated by the inelastic nucleon background.

Nuclear Binding Effects in Relativistic Coulomb Sum Rules

We extend the formulation of relativistic Coulomb sum rules to account for the average effects of nuclear binding on the initial and final states of ejected nucleons. Relativistic interactions are included by using a Dirac representation adapted from a vector-scalar field theory. The scalar field reduces the effective nucleon mass $M^*$ and increases the relativistic effects of recoil and Fermi motion. We consider two models for the off-shell behavior of the nuclear electromagnetic current, and demonstrate that the sum rule is accurate for applications to data over the interesting range of $M^*$ and three momentum $q$. We further indicate that the form of the sum rule is sufficiently general to accommodate a broad class of off-shell form factor models.

Relativistic Coulomb Sum Rules for $(e,e^\prime)$

A Coulomb sum rule is derived for the response of nuclei to $(e,e^\prime)$ scattering with large three-momentum transfers. Unlike the nonrelativistic formulation, the relativistic Coulomb sum is restricted to spacelike four-momenta for the most direct connection with experiments; an immediate consequence is that excitations involving antinucleons, e.g., $N{\bar N}$ pair production, are approximately eliminated from the sum rule. Relativistic recoil and Fermi motion of target nucleons are correctly incorporated. The sum rule decomposes into one- and two-body parts, with correlation information in the second. The one-body part requires information on the nucleon momentum distribution function, which is incorporated by a moment expansion method. The sum rule given through the second moment (RCSR-II) is tested in the Fermi gas model, and is shown to be sufficiently accurate for applications to data.
