Weakly bound dimers of fermionic atoms

We discuss the behavior of weakly bound bosonic dimers formed in a cold Fermi gas at a large positive scattering length $a$ for the interspecies interaction. We find the exact solution for the dimer-dimer elastic scattering and obtain a strong decrease of their collisional relaxation and decay with increasing $a$. The large ratio of the elastic to inelastic rate is promising for achieving Bose-Einstein condensation of the dimers and cooling the condensed gas to very low temperatures.

Hydrodynamic behavior in expanding thermal clouds of Rb-87

We study hydrodynamic behavior in expanding thermal clouds of Rb-87 released from an elongated trap. At our highest densities the mean free path is smaller than the radial size of the cloud. After release the clouds expand anisotropically. The cloud temperature drops by as much as 30%. This is attributed to isentropic cooling during the early stages of the expansion. We present an analytical model to describe the expansion and to estimate the cooling. Important consequences for time-of-flight thermometry are discussed.

Superfluid transition in quasi2D Fermi gases

We show that atomic Fermi gases in quasi2D geometries are promising for achieving superfluidity. In the regime of BCS pairing for weak attraction, we calculate the critical temperature T_c and analyze possibilities of increasing the ratio of T_c to the Fermi energy. In the opposite limit, where a strong coupling leads to the formation of weakly bound quasi2D dimers, we find that their Bose-Einstein condensate will be stable on a long time scale.

Three-body problem in Fermi gases with short-range interparticle interaction

We discuss 3-body processes in ultracold two-component Fermi gases with short-range intercomponent interaction characterized by a large and positive scattering length $a$. It is found that in most cases the probability of 3-body recombination is a universal function of the mass ratio and $a$, and is independent of short-range physics. We also calculate the scattering length corresponding to the atom-dimer interaction.

Bose-Einstein condensation into non-equilibrium states studied by condensate focusing

We report the formation of Bose-Einstein condensates into non-equilibrium states. Our condensates are much longer than equilibrium condensates with the same number of atoms, show strong phase fluctuations, and have a dynamical evolution similar to that of quadrupole shape oscillations of regular condensates. The condensates emerge in elongated traps as the result of local thermalization when the nucleation time is short compared to the axial oscillation time. We introduce condensate focusing as a powerful method to extract the phase-coherence length of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Critical rotation of a harmonically trapped Bose gas

We study experimentally and theoretically a cold trapped Bose gas under critical rotation, i.e. with a rotation frequency close to the frequency of the radial confinement. We identify two regimes: the regime of explosion where the cloud expands to infinity in one direction, and the regime where the condensate spirals out of the trap as a rigid body. The former is realized for a dilute cloud, and the latter for a Bose-Einstein condensate with the interparticle interaction exceeding a critical value. This constitutes a novel system in which repulsive interactions help in maintaining particles together.

Phase Fluctuations in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We demonstrate the existence of phase fluctuations in elongated Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) and study the dependence of those fluctuations on the system parameters. A strong dependence on temperature, atom number, and trapping geometry is observed. Phase fluctuations directly affect the coherence properties of BECs. In particular, we observe instances where the phase coherence length is significantly smaller than the condensate size. Our method of detecting phase fluctuations is based on their transformation into density modulations after ballistic expansion. An analytic theory describing this transformation is developed.

A cesium gas strongly confined in one dimension : sideband cooling and collisional properties

We study one-dimensional sideband cooling of Cesium atoms strongly confined in a far-detuned optical lattice. The Lamb-Dicke regime is achieved in the lattice direction whereas the transverse confinement is much weaker. The employed sideband cooling method, first studied by Vuletic et al.\cite{Vule98}, uses Raman transitions between Zeeman levels and produces a spin-polarized sample. We present a detailed study of this cooling method and investigate the role of elastic collisions in the system. We accumulate $83(5)%$ of the atoms in the vibrational ground state of the strongly confined motion, and elastic collisions cool the transverse motion to a temperature of $2.8 μ$K=$0.7 \hbarω_{\rm osc}/k_{\rm B}$, where $ω_{\rm osc}$ is the oscillation frequency in the strongly confined direction. The sample then approaches the regime of a quasi-2D cold gas. We analyze the limits of this cooling method and propose a dynamical change of the trapping potential as a mean of cooling the atomic sample to still lower temperatures. Measurements of the rate of thermalization between the weakly and strongly confined degrees of freedom are compatible with the zero energy scattering resonance observed previously in weak 3D traps. For the explored temperature range the measurements agree with recent calculations of quasi-2D collisions\cite{Petr01}. Transparent analytical models reproduce the expected behavior for $k_{\rm B}T \gg \hbar ω_{\rm osc}$ and also for $k_{\rm B}T \ll \hbar ω_{\rm osc}$ where the 2D features are prominent.

Observation of Phase Fluctuations in Bose-Einstein Condensates

The occurrence of phase fluctuations due to thermal excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is studied for a variety of temperatures and trap geometries. We observe the statistical nature of the appearence of phase fluctuations and characterize the dependence of their average value on temperature, number of particles and the trapping potential. We find pronounced phase fluctuations for condensates in very elongated traps in a broad temperature range. The results are of great importance for the realization of BEC in quasi 1D geometries, for matter wave interferometry with BECs, as well as for coherence properties of guided atom laser beams.

Phase-fluctuating 3D condensates in elongated traps

We find that in very elongated 3D trapped Bose gases, even at temperatures far below the BEC transition temperature Tc, the equilibrium state will be a 3D condensate with fluctuating phase (quasicondensate). At sufficiently low temperatures the phase fluctuations are suppressed and the quasicondensate turns into a true condensate. The presence of the phase fluctuations allows for extending thermometry of Bose-condensed gases well below those established in current experiments.

Interatomic collisions in a tightly confined Bose gas

We discuss pair interatomic collisions in a Bose gas tightly confined in one (axial) direction and identify two regimes of scattering. In the quasi2D regime, where the confinement frequency $ω_0$ greatly exceeds the gas temperature $T$, the scattering rates exhibit 2D features of the particle motion. At temperatures $T\sim\hbarω_0$ one has a confinement-dominated 3D regime, where the confinement can change the momentum dependence of the scattering amplitudes. We describe the collision-induced energy exchange between the axial and radial degrees of freedom and analyze recent experiments on thermalization and spin relaxation rates in a tightly (axially) confined gas of Cs atoms.

Regimes of quantum degeneracy in trapped 1D gases

We discuss the regimes of quantum degeneracy in a trapped 1D gas and obtain the diagram of states. Three regimes have been identified: the BEC regimes of a true condensate and quasicondensate, and the regime of a trapped gas of Tonks (gas of impenetrable bosons). The presence of a sharp cross-over to the BEC regime requires extremely small interaction between particles. We discuss how to distinguish between true and quasicondensates in phase coherence experiments.

Bose-Einstein condensation in quasi2D trapped gases

We discuss BEC in (quasi)2D trapped gases and find that well below the transition temperature $T_c$ the equilibrium state is a true condensate, whereas at intermediate temperatures $T<T_c$ one has a quasicondensate (condensate with fluctuating phase). The mean-field interaction in a quasi2D gas is sensitive to the frequency $ω_0$ of the (tight) confinement in the "frozen" direction, and one can switch the sign of the interaction by changing $ω_0$. Variation of $ω_0$ can also reduce the rates of inelastic processes, which opens prospects for tunable BEC in trapped quasi2D gases.

Low energy collective excitations in a superfluid trapped Fermi gas

We study low energy collective excitations in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas, that describe slow variations of the phase of the superfluid order parameter. Well below the critical temperature the corresponding eigenfrequencies turn out to be of the order of the trap frequency, and these modes manifest themselves as the eigenmodes of the density fluctuations of the gas sample. The latter could provide an experimental evidence of the presence of the superfluid phase.

Critical temperature and Ginzburg-Landau equation for a trapped Fermi gas

We discuss a superfluid phase transition in a trapped neutral-atom Fermi gas. We consider the case where the critical temperature greatly exceeds the spacing between the trap levels and derive the corresponding Ginzburg-Landau equation. The latter turns out to be analogous to the equation for the condensate wave function in a trapped Bose gas. The analysis of its solution provides us with the value of the critical temperature $T_{c}$ and with the spatial and temperature dependence of the order parameter in the vicinity of the phase transition point.
