Gate-tunable nonlocal Josephson effect through magnetic van der Waals bilayers

It is well-known that the proximity effect at superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) interfaces produces damped oscillatory behavior of the Cooper pair wave function within the ferromagnetic regions, which is analogous to the inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconductivity. It is often called the mesoscopic FFLO state and gives rise to $0-π$-transitions in S/F/S Josephson junctions. This paper offers an analysis of the proximity effect at interfaces between superconductors and magnetic van der Waals (vdW) bilayers. The specific feature of the proximity effect in the vdW bilayer systems is the presence of non-local Cooper pairs. We predict that the mesoscopic FFLO state formed by such pairs is sensitive to the difference between on-site energies of the monolayers composing the bilayer and, thus, can be controlled by applying a gating potential to one of the monolayers. This opens the possibility of implementing gate-controlled $0-π$ transitions in Josephson junctions through the magnetic vdW bilayer weak links.

Chiral pair density wave states generated by spin supercurrents

We report that spin supercurrents in magnetic superconductors and superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator bilayers can induce the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which strength is proportional to the superconducting order parameter amplitude. This effect leads to the existence of inhomogeneous parity-breaking ground states combining the chiral magnetic helix and the pair density wave orders. The formation of such states takes place via the penetration of chiral domain walls at the threshold temperature below the superconducting transition. We find regimes with both the single and the re-entrant transitions into the inhomogeneous states with decreasing temperature. The predicted hybrid chiral states can be found in the existing structures with realistic parameters and materials combinations.

Electrical response of S-F-TI-S junctions on magnetic texture dynamics

We consider a hybrid structure consisting of superconducting or normal leads with a combined ferromagnet-3D topological insulator interlayer. We compare responses of a Josephson junction and a normal junction to magnetic texture dynamics. In both cases the electromotive force resulting from the magnetization dynamics generates a voltage between the junction leads. For an open circuit this voltage is the same for normal and superconducting leads and allows for electrical detection of magnetization dynamics and a structure of a given magnetic texture. However, under the applied current the electrical response of the Josephson junction is essentially different due to the strong dependence of the critical Josephson current on the magnetization direction and can be used for experimental probing of this dependence. We propose a setup, which is able to detect a defect motion and to provide detailed information about the structure of magnetic inhomogeneity. The discussed effect could be of interest for spintronics applications.

Resistive state of SFS Josephson junctions in the presence of moving domain walls

We describe resistive states of the system combining two types of orderings - superconducting and ferromagnetic one. It is shown that in the presence of magnetization dynamics such systems become inherently dissipative and in principle cannot sustain any amount of the superconducting current because of the voltage generated by the magnetization dynamics. We calculate generic current-voltage characteristics of a superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor Josephson junction with an unpinned domain wall and find the low-current resistance associated with the domain wall motion. We suggest the finite slope of Shapiro steps as the characteristic feature of the regime with domain wall oscillations driven by the ac external current flowing through the junction.

Anomalous phase shift in a Josephson junction via an antiferromagnetic interlayer

The anomalous ground state phase shift in S/AF/S Josephson junctions in the presence of the Rashba SO-coupling is predicted and numerically investigated. It is found to be a consequence of the uncompensated magnetic moment at the S/AF interfaces. The anomalous phase shift exhibits a strong dependence on the value of the SO-coupling and the sublattice magnetization with the simultaneous existence of stable and metastable branches. It depends strongly on the orientation of the Neel vector with respect to the S/AF interfaces via the dependence on the orientation of the interface uncompensated magnetic moment, what opens a way to control the Neel vector by supercurrent in Josephson systems.

Magnetoelectric effects in superconductor/ferromagnet bilayers

We demonstrate that the hybrid structures consisting of a superconducting layer with an adjacent spin-textured ferromagnet demonstrate the variety of equilibrium magnetoelectric effects originating from coupling between the conduction electron spin and superconducting current. By deriving and solving the generalized Usadel equation which takes into account the spin-filtering effect we find that a supercurrent generates spin polarization in the superconducting film which is non-coplanar with the local ferromagnetic moment. The inverse magnetoelectric effect in such structures is shown to result in the spontaneous phase difference across the magnetic topological defects such as a domain wall and helical spin texture. The possibilities to obtain dissipationless spin torques and detect domain wall motion through the superconducting phase difference are discussed.

Chirality selective spin interactions mediated by the superconducting current

We show that superconducting correlations in the presence of non-zero condensate velocity can mediate the peculiar interaction between localized spins that breaks the global inversion symmetry of magnetic moments. The proposed interaction mechanism is capable of removing fundamental degeneracies between topologically distinct magnetic textures. For the generic system of three magnetic impurities in the current-carrying superconductor we find the energy term proportional to spin chirality. In realistic superconductor/ferromagnetic/superconductor setups we reveal significant energy differences between various magnetic textures with opposite chiralities. We calculate Josephson energies of junctions through left and right-handed magnetic helices as well as through the magnetic skyrmions with opposite topological charges. Relative energy shifts between otherwise degenerate magnetic textures in these setups are regulated by the externally controlled Josephson phase difference. The suggested low-dissipative manipulation with the skyrmion position in a racetrack geometry can be used for the advanced spintronics applications.
