Phase coherence and ``fragmented'' Bose condensates

We show that a ``fragmented Bose condensate'' in which two or more distinct single-particle states are macroscopically occupied by the same species of boson is inherently unstable to the formation of a conventional Bose condensate whose macroscopically occupied state is a linear combination of the ``fragments'' with definite relative phases. A related analysis shows that a reproducible relative phase develops when two initially decoupled condensates are placed in contact.

Trapped Fermi gases

We study the properties of a spin-polarized Fermi gas in a harmonic trap, using the semiclassical (Thomas-Fermi) approximation. Universal forms for the spatial and momentum distributions are calculated, and the results compared with the corresponding properties of a dilute Bose gas.

Metallic screening and correlation effects in superconducting fullerenes

We consider the frequency dependent Coulomb interaction between electrons in a molecular metal in the limit in which the conduction bandwidth is much less than the plasma frequency, which in turn is much less than intramolecular excitation energies. In particular, we compute the effective interactions at the Fermi energy in alkali-doped C$_{60}$, to second order in the screened interactions. The frequency dependence of the screening substantially reduces the effects of the long-range part of the Coulomb interaction, leading to the possibility of an effective attraction between electrons.

Holons in Chiral Spin-Liquids: Statistics and Pairing

We study Gutzwiller-projected variational wavefunctions for charged, spinless holon excitations in chiral spin liquids. We find that these states describe anyons, with a statistical phase $Φ_s$ that is continuously adjustable between $0$ and $π/2$, depending on a variational parameter. The statistical flux attached to each holon is localized to within a lattice constant. By diagonalizing the effective Hamiltonian for charge motion in our variational basis we obtain a two-holon pair state. This two-holon state has large overlap with a two-hole state whose relative wavefunction has $d$-wave symmetry and breaks time-reversal and parity.

Disordered Bosons: Condensate and Excitations

The disordered Bose Hubbard model is studied numerically within the Bogoliubov approximation. First, the spatially varying condensate wavefunction in the presence of disorder is found by solving a nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Using the Bogoliubov approximation to find the excitations above this condensate, we calculate the condensate fraction, superfluid density, and density of states for a two-dimensional disordered system. These results are compared with experiments done with ${}^4{\rm He}$ adsorbed in porous media.
