Exciton spin noise in quantum wells

A theory of spin fluctuations of excitons in quantum wells in the presence of non-resonant excitation has been developed. Both bright and dark excitonic states have been taken into account. The effect of a magnetic field applied in a quantum well plane has been analyzed in detail. We demonstrate that in relatively small fields the spin noise spectrum consists of a single peak centered at a zero frequency while an increase of magnetic field results in the formation of the second peak in the spectrum owing to an interplay of the Larmor effect of the magnetic field and the exchange interaction between electrons and holes forming excitons. Experimental possibilities to observe the exciton spin noise are discussed, particularly, by means of ultrafast spin noise spectroscopy. We show that the fluctuation spectra contain, in addition to individual contributions of electrons and holes, an information about correlation of their spins.

Spin noise spectroscopy of a single-quantum-well microcavity

We report on the first experimental observation of spin noise in a single semiconductor quantum well embedded into a microcavity. The great cavity-enhanced sensitivity to fluctuations of optical anisotropy has allowed us to measure the Kerr rotation and ellipticity noise spectra in the strong coupling regime. The spin noise spectra clearly show two resonant features: a conventional magneto-resonant component shifting towards higher frequencies with magnetic field and an unusual "nonmagnetic" component centered at zero frequency and getting suppressed with increasing magnetic field. We attribute the first of them to the Larmor precession of free electron spins, while the second one being presumably due to hyperfine electron-nuclei spin interactions.

Effect of exchange interaction on the spin fluctuations of localized electrons

In this paper a microscopic theory of spin fluctuations in an ensemble of electrons localized on donors in a bulk semiconductor has been developed. Both the hyperfine interaction of the electron spin with spins of lattice nuclei and the exchange interaction between the electrons have been taken into account. We propose a model of clusters to calculate spin noise spectra of the ensemble of localized charge carriers. It has been shown that the electron-electron exchange interaction leads to an effective averaging of random nuclear fields and a shift of the peak in the spin-fluctuation spectrum towards lower frequencies.

Spin coherence generation and detection in spherical nanocrystals

Theoretical description of electron spin orientation and detection by short optical pulses is proposed for the ensembles of the singly charged semiconductor nanocrystals. The complex structure of the valence band in spherical nanocrystals is taken into account. We demonstrate that the direction of electron spin injected by the pump pulse depends on both the pump pulse helicity and the pump pulse power. It is shown that the train of the optical pulses can lead to the complete orientation of the resident electron spin. The microscopic theory of the spin Faraday, Kerr and ellipticity effects is developed and the spectral sensitivity of these signals is discussed. We show that under periodic pumping the pronounced mode-locking of electron spins takes place and manifests itself as significant spin signals at negative delays between pump and probe pulses.
