Anisotropy of Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence and Polarization of the Spectral Lines of Molecules

The anisotropy of velocities in MHD turbulence is demonstrated explicitly by calculating the velocity gradients as a function of direction in representative simulations of decaying turbulence. It follows that the optical depths of spectral lines are anisotropic when there is MHD turbulence, and that this anisotropy influences the polarization characteristics of the emergent radiation. We calculate the linear polarization that results for the microwave lines of the CO molecule in star-forming gas and show that it is comparable to the polarization that is observed. This and our earlier result--that the anisotropy of MHD turbulence may be the cause for the absence of the Zeeman $π$-components in the spectra of OH mainline masers--are the first demonstrations of the occurrence of anisotropy in the optical depths caused by MHD turbulence. A non-local approximation is developed for the radiative transfer and the results are compared with those from a local (LVG) approximation.

Irregular Magnetic Fields and the Far-Infrared Polarimetry of Dust Emission from Interstellar Clouds

(abridged) The polarized thermal radiation at far infrared and submillimeter wavelengths from dust grains in interstellar clouds with irregular magnetic fields is simulated. We show that the polarization properties of quiescent clouds and of star-forming regions are consistent with Kolmogorov-like turbulent magnetic fields that are comparable in magnitude to the uniform component of the magnetic fields. If the beam size is much smaller than the correlation length $L_{\rm corr}$ of the fields, the calculated percentage polarization $p$ decreases to an asymptotic value when the number of correlation lengths $N_{\rm corr}$ through the cloud exceeds a few tens. For these values of $N_{\rm corr}$, the dispersion in the position angles $σ_α$ is still appreciable--decreasing to only about $20^{\circ}$. However, when the finite size of a telescope beam is taken into account, the asymptotic value of $p$ is reached for fewer correlation lengths (smaller $N_{\rm corr}$) due to averaging over the beam; $σ_α$ becames much smaller and consistent with the observational data. The smoothing of the polarization properties due to the combined effect of the thickness of the cloud and the finite size of the beam can be described by a single variable which we designate as the generalized number of correlation lengths. In addition, we study various factors that may contribute to the decrease in the linear polarization percentage with increasing intensity that is observed at submillimeter and far infrared wavelengths in many, though not in all, dark clouds (the "polarization hole" effect).

On the Influence of Uncertainties in Chemical Reaction Rates on Results of the Astrochemical Modelling

With the chemical reaction rate database UMIST95 (Millar et al. 1997) we analyze how uncertainties in rate constants of gas-phase chemical reactions influence the modelling of molecular abundances in the interstellar medium. Random variations are introduced into the rate constants to estimate the scatter in theoretical abundances. Calculations are performed for dark and translucent molecular clouds where gas phase chemistry is adequate. Similar approach was used by Pineau des Forets & Roueff (2000) for the study of chemical bistability. All the species are divided into 6 sensitivity groups according to the value of the scatter in their model abundances computed with varied rate constants. It is shown that the distribution of species within these groups depends on the number of atoms in a molecule and on the adopted physical conditions. The simple method is suggested which allows to single out reactions that are most important for the evolution of a given species.

A Coupled Dynamical and Chemical Model of Starless Cores of Magnetized Molecular Clouds: I. Formulation and Initial Results

We develop a detailed chemical model for the starless cores of strongly magnetized molecular clouds, with the ambipolar diffusion-driven dynamic evolution of the clouds coupled to the chemistry through ion abundances. We concentrate on two representative model clouds in this initial study, one with magnetic fields and the other without. The model predictions on the peak values and spatial distributions of the column densities of CO, CCS, N$_2$H$^+$ and HCO$^+$ are compared with those observationally inferred for the well-studied starless core L1544, which is thought to be on the verge of star formation. We find that the magnetic model, in which the cloud is magnetically supported for several million years before collapsing dynamically, provides a reasonable overall fit to the available data on L1544; the fit is significantly worse for the non-magnetic model, in which the cloud collapses promptly. The observed large peak column density for N$_2$H$^+$ and clear central depression for CCS favor the magnetically-retarded collapse over the free-fall collapse. A relatively high abundance of CCS is found in the magnetic model, resulting most likely from an interplay of depletion and late-time hydrocarbon chemistry enhanced by CO depletion. These initial results lend some support to the standard picture of dense core formation in strongly magnetized clouds through ambipolar diffusion. They are at variance with those of Aikawa et al. (2001) who considered a set of models somewhat different from ours and preferred one in which the cloud collapses more or less freely for L1544.

Spectra of Maser Radiation from a Turbulent, Circumnuclear Accretion Disk. III. Circular polarization

Calculations are performed for the circular polarization of maser radiation from a turbulent, Keplerian disk that is intended to represent the sub-parsec disk at the nucleus of the galaxy NGC4258. The polarization in the calculations is a result of the Zeeman effect in the regime in which the Zeeman splitting is much less than the spectral linebreadth. Plausible configurations for turbulent magnetic and velocity fields in the disk are created by statistical methods. This turbulence, along with the Keplerian velocity gradients and the blending of the three hyperfine components to form the $6_{16} - 5_{23}$ masing transition of water, are key ingredients in determining the appearance of the polarized spectra that are calculated. These spectra are quite different from the polarized spectra that would be expected for a two-level transition where there is no hyperfine structure. The effect of the hyperfine structure on the polarization is most striking in the calculations for the maser emission that represents the central (or systemic) features of NGC4258. Information about magnetic fields is inferred from observations for polarized maser radiation and bears on the structure of accretion disks.

Irregular Magnetic Fields in Interstellar Clouds and the Linear Polarization of Starlight

Calculations are performed for the linear polarization of starlight due to extinction by aligned dust grains when the starlight traverses a medium with irregular magnetic fields. This medium is intended to represent the optically thick components of interstellar clouds which are observed to make little, if any, contribution to the polarization of starlight. In agreement with the observations, we find that the polarization properties of the starlight---the average fractional polarization and the dispersion in position angles---can be essentially unchanged. For this, the rms of the irregular component must be greater than the average magnetic field, which in turn tends to imply that the turbulent velocities in these interstellar clouds are super-Alfvenic.

Irregular Magnetic Fields in Interstellar Clouds and Variations in the Observed Circular Polarization of Spectral Lines

The strengths of magnetic fields in interstellar gas clouds are obtained through observations of the circular polarization of spectral line radiation. Irregularities in this magnetic field may be present due to turbulence, waves or perhaps other causes, and may play an essential role in the structure and evolution of the gas clouds. To infer information about these irregularities from the observational data, we develop statistical relationships between the rms values of the irregular component of the magnetic field and spatial variations in the circular polarization of the spectral line radiation. The irregularities are characterized in analogy with descriptions of turbulence---by a sum of Fourier waves having a power spectrum with a slope similar to that of Kolmogorov turbulence. For comparison, we also perform computations in which turbulent magnetic and velocity fields from representative MHD simulations by others are utilized. Although the effects of the variations about the mean value of the magnetic field along the path of a ray tend to cancel, a significant residual effect in the polarization of the emergent radiation remains for typical values of the relevant parameters. A map of observed spectra of the 21 cm line toward Orion A is analyzed and the results are compared with our calculations in order to infer the strength of the irregular component of the magnetic field. The rms of the irregular component is found to be comparable in magnitude to the mean magnetic field within the cloud. Hence, the turbulent and Alfven velocities should also be comparable.

Role of disk galaxies in the chemical enrichment of the intracluster medium

Elliptical galaxies are often assumed to be the primary source of heavy elements in the intracluster medium (ICM), with the contribution of other morphological types being negligible. In this paper we argue that a role of spiral galaxies in the chemical evolution of the ICM is also important. This statement rests upon our recent calculations of the heavy element loss from a disk galaxy through the hot steady-state galactic wind and dust grains expulsion by stellar radiation pressure. We show that a typical disk galaxy is nearly as effective in enriching the ICM as an elliptical galaxy of the same mass. Having estimated the oxygen and iron loss from a single galaxy, we integrate them over the galactic mass spectrum. We show that the "effective" loss (per unit luminosity) from spiral galaxies is comparable to the loss from ellipticals. The dominant role of early-type galaxies in rich clusters is caused by that they outnumber spirals.

A Non-Zeeman Interpretation for Polarized Maser Radiation and the Magnetic Field at the Atmospheres of Late-Type Giants

The linear polarization that is observed, together with likely changes in the orientation of the magnetic field along the line of sight and hence of the optical axes of the medium, can lead to the circular polarization that is observed in the radiation of the circumstellar SiO masers. A magnetic field greater than only about 30 mG is required, in contrast to 10-100 G that would be implied by the Zeeman interpretation. To assess quantitatively the likely changes in orientation of the magnetic field, calculations are performed with representative field configurations that are created by statistical sampling using a Kolmogorov-like power spectrum.
