A vertical inertial sensor with interferometric readout

High precision interferometers such as gravitational-wave detectors require complex seismic isolation systems in order to decouple the experiment from unwanted ground motion. Improved inertial sensors for active isolation potentially enhance the sensitivity of existing and future gravitational-wave detectors, especially below 30 Hz, and thereby increase the range of detectable astrophysical signals. This paper presents a vertical inertial sensor which senses the relative motion between an inertial test mass suspended by a blade spring and a seismically isolated platform. An interferometric readout was used which introduces low sensing noise, and preserves a large dynamic range due to fringe-counting. The expected sensitivity is comparable to other state-of-the-art interferometric inertial sensors and reaches values of $10^{-10}\,\text{m}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at 100 mHz and $10^{-12}\,\text{m}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at 1 Hz. The potential sensitivity improvement compared to commercial L-4C geophones is shown to be about two orders of magnitude at 10 mHz and 100 mHz and one order of magnitude at 1 Hz. The noise performance is expected to be limited by thermal noise of the inertial test mass suspension below 10 Hz. Further performance limitations of the sensor, such as tilt-to-vertical coupling from a non-perfect levelling of the test mass and nonlinearities in the interferometric readout, are also quantified and discussed.

First order transition in trigonal structure ${\textbf{Ca}}{\textbf{Mn}}_{2}{\textbf{P}}_{2}$

We report structural and physical properties of the single crystalline ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) results show that ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ adopts the trigonal ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Al}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}$-type structure. Temperature dependent electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ measurements indicate an insulating ground state for ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ with activation energies of 40 meV and 0.64 meV for two distinct regions, respectively. Magnetization measurements show no apparent magnetic phase transition under 400 K. Different from other ${\mathrm{A}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{Pn}}_{2}$ (A = Ca, Sr, and Ba, and Pn = P, As, and Sb) compounds with the same structure, heat capacity $C_{\mathrm{p}}(T)$ and $ρ(T)$ reveal that ${\mathrm{Ca}}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ has a first-order transition at $T$ = 69.5 K and the transition temperature shifts to high temperature upon increasing pressure. The emergence of plenty of new Raman modes below the transition, clearly suggests a change in symmetry accompanying the transition. The combination of the structural, transport, thermal and magnetic measurements, points to an unusual origin of the transition.

Single crystal growth and magnetoresistivity study of topological semimetal CoSi

We report single crystal growth of CoSi, which has recently been recognized as a new type of topological semimetal hosting fourfold and sixfold degenerate nodes. The Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillation (QO) is observed on our crystals. There are two frequencies originating from almost isotropic bulk electron Fermi surfaces, in accordance with band structure calculations. The effective mass, scattering rate, and QO phase difference of the two frequencies are extracted and discussed.

Huddle test measurement of a near Johnson noise limited geophone

In this paper the sensor noise of two geophone configurations (L-22D and L-4C geophones from Sercel with custom built amplifiers) was measured by performing two huddle tests. It is shown that the accuracy of the results can be significantly improved by performing the huddle test in a seismically quiet environment and by using a large number of reference sensors to remove the seismic foreground signal from the data. Using these two techniques, the measured sensor noise of the two geophone configurations matched calculated predictions remarkably well in the bandwidth of interest (0.01 Hz to 100 Hz). Low noise operational amplifiers OPA188 were utilized to amplify the L-4C geophone to give a sensor that was characterized to be near Johnson noise limited in the bandwidth of interest with a noise value of $10^{-11} \text{m}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at 1 Hz.

Anisotropic transport and optical spectroscopy study on antiferromagentic triangular lattice EuCd_2As_2: an interplay between magnetism and charge transport properties

We present anisotropic transport and optical spectroscopy studies on EuCd_2As_2. The measurements reveal that EuCd_2As_2 is a low carrier density semimetal with moderate anisotropic resistivity ratio. The charge carriers experience very strong scattering from Eu magnetic moments, resulting in a Kondo-like increase of resistivity at low temperature. Below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature at $T_N$= 9.5 K, the resistivity drops sharply due to the reduced scattering from the ordered Eu moments. Nevertheless, the anisotropic ratio of $ρ_c/ρ_{ab}$ keeps increasing, suggesting that the antiferromagnetic coupling is along the c-axis. The optical spectroscopy measurement further reveals, besides an overdamped reflectance plasma edge at low energy, a strong coupling between phonon and electronic continuum. Our study suggests that EuCd_2As_2 is a promising candidate displaying intriguing interplay among charge, magnetism and the underlying crystal lattice.

Kondo effect in a novel 5d quasi-skutterudite Yb3Os4Ge13

We report the crystal growth of a new compound, Yb3Os4Ge13, by using a Bi-flux method. X-ray diffraction measurement shows that it crystallizes in the quasi-skutterudite-type caged structure with a cubic space group of Pm-3n (No. 223). Magnetic measurements reveal almost fully localized Yb f-moments above 120 K. The resistivity exhibits a crossover from metallic to insulating behavior with a logarithmic increase below ~ 40 K. The specific heat coefficient shows a rapid upturn below ~5 K and exceeds 2 J mol-1 K-2 at 2 K. Our experimental analysis and electronic band structure calculations demonstrate that Yb3Os4Ge13 exhibits the Kondo effect due to strong hybridization of the localized Yb f-moments with the p-electrons of the surrounding Ge-cages.
