Supernova Neutrino Scattering Rates Reduced by Nucleon Spin Fluctuations: Perturbative Limit

In a nuclear medium, spin-dependent forces cause the nucleon spins to fluctuate with a rate $Γ_σ$. We have previously shown that as a consequence the effective axial-current neutrino-nucleon scattering cross section is reduced. Here, we calculate this reduction explicitly in the perturbative limit $Γ_σ\ll T$. By virtue of an exact sum rule of the spin-density structure function, we express the modified cross section in terms of the matrix element for neutrino-nucleon scattering in the presence of a spin-dependent nuclear potential. This representation allows for a direct comparison with and confirmation of Sawyer's related perturbative result. In a supernova core with a typical temperature $T=10\,\rm MeV$, the perturbative limit is relevant for densities $ρ\alt10^{13}\,\rm g\,cm^{-3}$ and thus applies around the neutrino sphere. There, the cross-section reduction is of order a few percent and thus not large; however, a new mode of energy transfer between neutrinos and nucleons is enabled which may be important for neutrino spectra formation. We derive an analytic perturbative expression for the rate of energy transfer.

Nucleon Spin Fluctuations and the Supernova Emission of Neutrinos and Axions

In the hot and dense medium of a supernova (SN) core, the nucleon spins fluctuate so fast that the axial-vector neutrino opacity and the axion emissivity are expected to be significantly modified. Axions with $m_a\alt10^{-2}\,{\rm eV}$ are not excluded by SN~1987A. A substantial transfer of energy in neutrino-nucleon ($νN$) collisions is enabled which may alter the spectra of SN neutrinos relative to calculations where energy-conserving $νN$ collisions had been assumed near the neutrinosphere.

Axion Dissipation Through the Mixing of Goldstone Bosons

By coupling axions strongly to a hidden sector, the energy density in coherent axions may be converted to radiative degrees of freedom, alleviating the ``axion energy crisis''. The strong coupling is achieved by mixing the axion and some other Goldstone boson through their kinetic energy terms, in a manner reminiscent of paraphoton models. Even with the strong coupling it proves difficult to relax the axion energy density through particle absorption, due to the derivative nature of Goldstone boson couplings and the effect of back reactions on the evolution of the axion number density. However, the distribution of other particle species in the hidden sector will be driven from equilibrium by the axion field oscillations. Restoration of thermal equilibrium results in energy being transferred from the axions to massless particles, where it can redshift harmlessly without causing any cosmological problems.

Planck Scale Symmetry Breaking and Majoron Physics

Majoron models provide neutrino masses via the spontaneous breaking of a global $U(1)$ symmetry. However, it may be argued that all global symmetries will be explicitly violated by gravitational effects. We show that it is possible to preserve most of the usual features of majoron models by invoking $U(1)_{B-L}$ to be a gauge symmetry and adding a second singlet scalar field. The majoron gets a small model dependent mass. The couplings of majorons to neutrinos may be of ordinary strength or may be made arbitrarily weak. We discuss the cosmological and astrophysical consequences of majoron models in the context of a model dependent majoron mass and neutrino coupling. For an appropriate choice of parameters majorons can play the role of dark matter.
