Observation of the Decay Xi^0 --> Sigma^+ mu^- nu(bar)

The Xi^0 muon semi-leptonic decay has been observed for the first time with nine identified events using the KTeV beam line and detector at Fermilab. The decay is normalized to the Xi^0 beta decay mode and yields a value for the ratio of decay rates of $(1.8^{+0.7}_{-0.5}(stat.)\pm0.2(syst.))\times 10^{-2}$. This is in agreement with the SU(3) flavor symmetric quark model.

Final Results from the KTeV Experiment on the Decay KL -> pi0 gamma gamma

We report on a new measurement of the branching ratio B(KL->pi0 gamma gamma)using the KTeV detector. We reconstruct 1982 events with an estimated background of 608, that results in B(KL -> pi0 gamma gamma) = (1.29 +/- 0.03(stat) +/- 0.05(syst)) x 10**-6. We also measure the parameter, aV, which characterizes the strength of vector meson exchange terms in this decay. We find aV = -0.31 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.07(syst). These results utilize the full KTeV data set collected from 1997 to 2000 and supersede earlier KTeV measurements of the branching ratio and aV.

Determination of the Parity of the Neutral Pion via the Four-Electron Decay

We present a new determination of the parity of the neutral pion via the double Dalitz decay pi^0 -> e+ e- e+ e-. Our sample, which consists of 30511 candidate decays, was collected from K_L -> pi0 pi0 pi0 decays in flight at the KTeV-E799 experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We confirm the negative pi^0 parity, and place a limit on scalar contributions to the pi^0 -> e+ e- e+ e- decay amplitude of less than 3.3% assuming CPT conservation. The pi^0 gamma* gamma* form factor is well described by a momentum-dependent model with a slope parameter fit to the final state phase space distribution. Additionally, we have measured the branching ratio of this mode to be B(pi^0 -> e+ e- e+ e-) = (3.26 +- 0.18) x 10^(-5).

First Observation of Coherent $π^0$ Production in Neutrino Nucleus Interactions with $E_ν<$ 2 GeV

The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab has amassed the largest sample to date of $π^0$s produced in neutral current (NC) neutrino-nucleus interactions at low energy. This paper reports a measurement of the momentum distribution of $π^0$s produced in mineral oil (CH$_2$) and the first observation of coherent $π^0$ production below 2 GeV. In the forward direction, the yield of events observed above the expectation for resonant production is attributed primarily to coherent production off carbon, but may also include a small contribution from diffractive production on hydrogen. Integrated over the MiniBooNE neutrino flux, the sum of the NC coherent and diffractive modes is found to be (19.5 $\pm$1.1 (stat) $\pm$2.5 (sys))% of all exclusive NC $π^0$ production at MiniBooNE. These measurements are of immediate utility because they quantify an important background to MiniBooNE's search for $ν_μ \to ν_e$ oscillations.

Measurement of the Decay KL -> pi0 e+ e- gamma

We report on a new measurement of the branching ratio B(KL -> pi0 e+ e- gamma) using the KTeV detector. This analysis uses the full KTeV data set collected from 1997 to 2000. We reconstruct 139 events over a background of 14, which results in B(KL -> pi0 e+ e- gamma) = (1.62 +/- 0.14 (stat) +/- 0.09 (syst)) x 10^{-8}. This result supersedes the earlier KTeV measurement of this branching ratio.

Tests of Lorentz violation in muon antineutrino to electron antineutrino oscillations

A recently developed Standard-Model Extension (SME) formalism for neutrino oscillations that includes Lorentz and CPT violation is used to analyze the sidereal time variation of the neutrino event excess measured by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) experiment. The LSND experiment, performed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, observed an excess, consistent with neutrino oscillations, of ${\barν}_e$ in a beam of ${\barν}_μ$. It is determined that the LSND oscillation signal is consistent with no sidereal variation. However, there are several combinations of SME coefficients that describe the LSND data; both with and without sidereal variations. The scale of Lorentz and CPT violation extracted from the LSND data is of order $10^{-19}$ GeV for the SME coefficients $a_L$ and $E \times c_L$. This solution for Lorentz and CPT violating neutrino oscillations may be tested by other short baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, such as the MiniBooNE experiment.

Measurements of the Branching Fractions and Decay Distributions for KL->πμνγand KL->πeνγ

We present measurements of R_Kl3rad = Gamma(KL->π\ellνγ; Egcm > 10 MeV)/Gamma(KL->π\ellν), where ell = mu or e, and Egcm is the photon energy in the kaon rest frame. These measurements are based on KL decays collected in 1997 by the KTeV (E832) experiment at Fermilab. With samples of 1385 KL->πμνγand 14221 KL->π\eνγcandidates, we find R_Km3rad = (0.530 +- 0.019)% and R_Ke3rad = (4.942 +- 0.062)%. We also examine distributions of photon energy and lepton-photon angle.

Demonstration of a solid deuterium source of ultra-cold neutrons

Ultra-cold neutrons (UCN), neutrons with energies low enough to be confined by the Fermi potential in material bottles, are playing an increasing role in measurements of fundamental properties of the neutron. The ability to manipulate UCN with material guides and bottles, magnetic fields, and gravity can lead to experiments with lower systematic errors than have been obtained in experiments with cold neutron beams. The UCN densities provided by existing reactor sources limit these experiments. The promise of much higher densities from solid deuterium sources has led to proposed facilities coupled to both reactor and spallation neutron sources. In this paper we report on the performance of a prototype spallation neutron-driven solid deuterium source. This source produced bottled UCN densities of 145 +/-7 UCN/cm3, about three times greater than the largest bottled UCN densities previously reported. These results indicate that a production UCN source with substantially higher densities should be possible.

Nondemolition measurements of a single quantum spin using Josephson oscillations

We consider a Josephson junction containing a single localized spin 1/2 between conventional singlet superconducting electrodes. We study the spin dynamics and measurements when a dc-magnetic field ${\bf B}\parallel z$ acts on the spin and the junction is embedded into a dissipative circuit. We show that when tunneling or a voltage are turned on at time $t=0$ the Josephson current starts to oscillate with an amplitude depending on the initial ($t=0$) value of the spin $z$-component, $S_z= \pm 1/2$. At low temperatures, when effects of quasiparticles may be neglected, this procedure realizes a quantum-non-demolition (QND) measurement of $S_z$.

Search for $π^0 \to ν_μ\barν_μ$ Decay in LSND

We observe a net beam-excess of $8.7 \pm 6.3$ (stat) $\pm 2.4$ (syst) events, above 160 MeV, resulting from the charged-current reaction of $ν_μ$ and/or $\barν_μ$ on C and H in the LSND detector. No beam related muon background is expected in this energy regime. Within an analysis framework of $π^0 \to ν_μ\barν_μ$, we set a direct upper limit for this branching ratio of $Γ(π^0 \to ν_μ\barν_μ) / Γ(π^0 \to all) < 1.6 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% confidence level.

Testing the energy scale of the CELESTE experiment

The uncertainties on the absolute energy scale of the CELESTE experiment affect the constraints CELESTE can impose on > 30 GeV gamma-ray emission models. To date, these uncertainties have been of order 30 %. The optical throughputs of the atmosphere and the detector are key to understanding the energy scale. We are comparing CELESTE photomultiplier anode currents measured for bright stars with predictions from the detector simulation. In these studies we include data from recently installed radiometers, and from the LIDAR operating on the site.

An Apparatus to Control and Monitor the Para-D2 Concentration in a Solid Deuterium, Superthermal Source of Ultra-cold Neutrons

Controlling and measuring the concentration of para-D2 is an essential step toward realizing solid deuterium as an intense ultra-cold neutron (UCN) source. To this end, we implemented an experimental technique to convert para- to ortho-deuterium molecules by flowing D2 gas through a cryogenic cell filled with paramagnetic hydrous ferric oxide granules. This process efficiently reduced the para-D2 concentration from 33.3% to 1.5%. Rotational Raman spectroscopy was applied to measure the residual para-D2 contamination to better than 2 parts in 10^3, and the hydrogen contamination to 1 part in 10^3. We also contrast our optical technique to conventional thermal conductivity measurements of the para-D2 concentration, reporting some of the relevant strengths and weaknesses of our implementation of each technique.

BaBar Web job submission with Globus authentication and AFS access

We present two versions of a grid job submission system produced for the BaBar experiment. Both use globus job submission to process data spread across various sites, producing output which can be combined for analysis. The problems encountered with authorisation and authentication, data location, job submission, and the input and output sandboxes are described, as are the solutions. The total system is still some way short of the aims of enterprises such as the EDG, but represent a significant step along the way.

The 2001 April Burst Activation of SGR 1900+14: Pulse Properties and Torque

We report on observations of SGR 1900+14 made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and BeppoSAX during the April 2001 burst activation of the source. Using these data, we measure the spindown torque on the star and confirm earlier findings that the torque and burst activity are not directly correlated. We compare the X-ray pulse profile to the gamma-ray profile during the April 18 intermediate flare and show that (i) their shapes are similar and (ii) the gamma-ray profile aligns closely in phase with the X-ray pulsations. The good phase alignment of the gamma-ray and X-ray profiles suggests that there was no rapid spindown following this flare of the magnitude inferred for the August 27 giant flare. We discuss how these observations further constrain magnetic field reconfiguration models for the large flares of SGRs.

Weak Lensing Results from the 75 Square Degree CTIO Survey

We measure seeing-corrected ellipticities for 2 x 10^6 galaxies with magnitude R<23 in 12 widely separated fields totalling 75 deg^2 of sky. At angular scales >30\arcmin, ellipticity correlations are detected at high significance and exhibit nearly the pure "E-mode" behavior expected of weak gravitational lensing. Even when smoothed to the full field size of 2.5 degrees, which is ~25h^-1 Mpc at the lens distances, an rms shear variance of <γ^2>^1/2 = 0.0012 +- 0.0003 is detected. At smaller angular scales there is significant "B-mode" power, an indication of residual uncorrected PSF distortions. The >30\arcmin data constrain the power spectrum of matter fluctuations on comoving scales of ~10h^-1 Mpc to have σ_8 (Ω_m/0.3)^{0.57} = 0.71^{+0.12}_{-0.16} (95% CL, \LambdaCDM, Γ=0.21), where the systematic error includes statistical and calibration uncertainties, cosmic variance, and a conservative estimate of systematic contamination based upon the detected B-mode signal. This normalization of the power spectrum is lower than previous weak-lensing results but generally consistent them, is at the lower end of the σ_8 range from various analyses of galaxy cluster abundances, and agrees with recent determinations from CMB and galaxy clustering. The large and dispersed sky coverage of our survey reduces random errors and cosmic variance, while the relatively shallow depth allows us to use existing redshift-survey data to reduce systematic uncertainties in the N(z) distribution to insignificance. Reanalysis of the data with more sophisticated algorithms will hopefully reduce the systematic (B-mode) contamination, and allow more precise, multidimensional constraint of cosmological parameters.

Polarized Magnetic Wire Induced by Tunneling Through a Magnetic Impurity

Using the zero mode method we compute the conductance of a wire consisting of a magnetic impurity coupled to two Luttinger liquid leads characterized by the Luttinger exponent $α(\leq 1)$. We find for resonance conditions, in which the Fermi energy of the leads is close to a single particle energy of the impurity, the conductance as a function of temperature is $G \sim \frac{e^2}{h} (T/T_F)^{2(α-2)}$, whereas for off-resonance conditions the conductance is $G \sim \frac{e^2}{h} (T/T_F)^{2(α-1)}$. By applying a gate voltage and/or a magnetic field, one of the spin components can be in resonance while the other is off-resonance causing a strong asymmetry between the spin-up and spin-down conductances.

Measurements of Charged Current Reactions of $ν_e$ on $^{12}C$

Charged Current reactions of $ν_e$ on $^{12}C$ have been studied using a $μ^+$ decay-at-rest $ν_e$ beam at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The cross section for the exclusive reaction $^{12}C(ν_e,e^-)^{12}N_{g.s.}$ was measured to be $(8.9\pm0.3\pm0.9)\times10^{-42}$ cm$^2$. The observed energy dependence of the cross section and angular distribution of the outgoing electron agree well with theoretical expectations. Measurements are also presented for inclusive transitions to $^{12}N$ excited states, $^{12}C(ν_e,e^-)^{12}N^*$ and compared with theoretical expectations. The measured cross section, $(4.3\pm0.4\pm0.6)\times10^{-42}$ cm$^2$, is somewhat lower than previous measurements and than a continuum random phase approximation calculation. It is in better agreement with a recent shell model calculation.

Measurements of ultracold neutron lifetimes in solid deuterium

We present the first measurements of the survival time of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) in solid deuterium SD2. This critical parameter provides a fundamental limitation to the effectiveness of superthermal UCN sources that utilize solid ortho-deuterium as the source material. Superthermal UCN sources offer orders of magnitude improvement in the available densities of UCNs, and are of great importance to fundamental particle-physics experiments such as searches for a static electric dipole moment and lifetime measurements of the free neutron. These measurements are performed utilizing a SD2 source coupled to a spallation source of neutrons, providing a demonstration of UCN production in this geometry and permitting systematic studies of the influence of thermal up-scatter and contamination with para-deuterium on the UCN survival time.
