Access via laboratory experiments to the level mixing effect induced by blackbody radiation and its influence on the cosmological hydrogen recombination problem

An effect of atomic line broadening induced by the blackbody radiation is discussed. The level mixing effect and anti-Stokes Raman scattering are compared. It is shown that the mixing effect gives the most significant contribution to the line broadening and it is indicated how to distinguish these two effects in laboratory experiments. The influence of the level mixing on the recombination history of primordial plasma is also discussed.

QED calculations of three-photon transition probabilities in H-like ions with arbitrary nuclear charge

The quantum electrodynamical theory of the three-photon transitions in hydrogen-like ions is presented. Emission probabilities of various three-photon decay channels for $ 2p_{3/2} $, $ 2p_{1/2} $ and $ 2s_{1/2} $ states are calculated for the nuclear charge $Z$ values $1\leqslant Z \leqslant 95$. The results are given in two different gauges. The fully relativistic three-photon decay rates of hydrogen-like ions with half-integer nuclear spin are given for transitions between fine structure components. The results can be applied to the tests of the Bose-Einstein statistics for the multiphoton systems.

Spin-Statistic Selection Rules for Multiphoton Transitions: Application to Helium Atom

A theoretical investigation of the three-photon transition rates $ 2^1P_1\rightarrow 2^1S_0\;,1^1S_0 $ and $ 2^3P_2\rightarrow 2^1S_0\;,1^1S_0 $ for the helium atom is presented. Photon energy distributions and precise values of the nonrelativistic transition rates are obtained with employment of correlated wave functions of the Hylleraas type. The possible experiments for the tests of the Bose-Einstein statistics for multiphoton systems are discussed.

Spin-Statistic Selection Rules for Multi-Equal-Photon Transitions in Atoms: Extension of the Landau-Yang Theorem to Multiphoton Systems

We establish the existence of spin-statistic selection rules (SSSR) for multi-equal-photon transitions in atomic systems. These selection rules are similar to those for systems of many equivalent electrons in atomic theory. The latter ones are the direct consequence of Pauli exclusion principle. In this sense the SSSR play the role of the exclusion principle for photons: they forbid some particular states for the photon systems. We established several SSSR for few-photon systems. 1) First rule (SSSR-1): two-equivalent photons involved in any atomic transition can have only even values of the total angular momentum J. This selection rule is an extension of the Landau-Yang theorem to the photons involved in atomic transitions. 2) second rule (SSSR-2): three equivalent dipole photons involved in any atomic transition can have only odd values of the total angular momentum J=1,3. 3) third rule (SSSR-3): four equivalent dipole photons involved in any atomic transition can have only even values of the total angular momentum J=0,2,4. We also suggest a method for a possible experimental test of these SSSR by means of laser experiments.

EIT phenomenon for the three-level hydrogen atoms and its application to the era of the cosmological recombination

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon in earlier universe is considered. We evaluated the elementary processes of the single scattering of photon on the hydrogen atom with the purpose of their use in the tasks of the radiation transfer theory. The additional function $f$, which depends on external conditions, is found. This function can be considered as an adjustment of the optical depth that leads to the necessity of modernization of the escape probability $p_{ij}(τ_S)\rightarrow p_{ij}(τ_S(1+f))$. The numerical values of $f$ for the different schemes of atom in three-level approximation are given. It is found that the magnitude of function $f$ could influence significantly on the formation of CMB in some partial cases.

Investigation of the electromagnetically induced transparency in era of cosmological hydrogen recombination

Investigation of the cosmic microwave background formation processes is one of the most actual problem at present time. In this paper we analyze the response of the hydrogen atom to the external photon fields. Field characteristics are defined via conditions corresponding to the recombination era of universe. Approximation of three-level atom is used to describe the "atom - fields" interaction. It is found that the phenomena of the electromagnetically induced transparancy takes place in this case. Consideration of EIT phenomena makes it necessary to update astrophysical description of the processes of the cosmic microwave background formation and, in particular, Sobolev escape probability. Additional terms to the optical depth in definition of Sobolev escape probability on the level about 1% are found.

QED theory of the multiphoton cascade transitions in atoms

QED theory of multiphoton cascade transitions in atoms and ions is developed. This theory allows for the accurate description of the process important for astrophysical studies of the cosmological hydrogen recombination. In particular the $ 3s\rightarrow1s+2γ$, $ 4s\rightarrow1s+2γ$ and $ 3p\rightarrow1s+3γ$ processes are considered and some controversies existing in the literature are resolved.

QED model of the radiation escape from the matter

A simple model based on QED is presented for the estimation of contribution of the excited level few-photon decays to the radiation escape from the matter in the epoch of the cosmological hydrogen recombination. It is shown that apart from the widely studied two-photon decays, some specific 3-photon decays can contribute on the level of 0.1% accuracy, required by the recent astrophysical observations.

Two-photon decays of highly excited states in hydrogen

The relativistic and nonrelativistic approaches for the calculations of the two-photon decay rates of highly excited states in hydrogen are compared. The dependence on the principal quantum number (n) of the ns, nd, and np initial states is investigated up to n = 100 for the nonresonant emissions. For the ns states together with the main E1E1 channel the contributions of higher multipoles (M1M1, E2E2, E1M2) are considered. For the np states the E1M1 and E1E2 channels are evaluated. Moreover, the simple analytical formula for the E1M1 decay is derived in the nonrelativistic limit.

Two-photon approximation in the theory of the electron recombination in hydrogen

A rigorous QED theory of the multiphoton decay of excited states in hydrogen atom is presented. The "two-photon" approximation is formulated which is limited by the one-photon and two-photon transitions including cascades transitions with two-photon links. This may be helpful for the strict description of the recombination process in hydrogen atom and, in principle, for the history of the hydrogen recombination in the early Universe.

Influence of external electric fields on multi-photon transitions between the 2s, 2p and 1s levels for hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms and hydrogen-like ions

One- and two-photon transitions in the hydrogen atom are analytically evaluated in the absence and in the presence of an external electric field. The emission probabilities are different for the hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms due to the existence of contributions, linear in electric field. The magnitude of these contributions is evaluated within the nonrelativistic limit. The Coulomb Green function method is applied. Different nonrelativistic "forms" for the decay probabilities in combination with different gauge choices are considered. The three-photon E1E1E1 2p-1s transition probability is also evaluated and possible applications of the results are discussed.

Two-photon decay of excited levels in hydrogen: the ambiguity of the separation of cascades and pure two-photon emission

The problem of the evaluation of the two-photon decay width of excited states in hydrogen is considered. Two different approaches to the evaluation of the width including cascades channels are employed: the summation of the transition probabilities for various decay channels and the evaluation of the imaginary part of the Lamb shift. As application the decay channels for the 3s level of the hydrogen atom are evaluated, including the cascade transition probability 3s-2p-1s as well as "pure" two-photon decay probability and the interference between both channels. An important role should be assigned to the "pure" two-photon probability in astrophysics context, since processes of this kind provide a possibility for the decoupling of radiation and matter in the early Universe. We demonstrate the ambiguity of separation of the "pure" two-photon contribution and criticize the existing attempts for such a separation.

Theoretical study of the accuracy limits for the optical resonance frequency measurements

The principal limits for the accuracy of the resonance frequency measurements set by the asymmetry of the natural resonance line shape are studied and applied to the recent accurate frequency measurements in the two-photon 1s-2s resonance and in the one-photon 1s-2p resonance in hydrogen atom. This limit for 1s-2s resonance is found to be $\sim 10^{-5}$ Hz compared to the accuracy achieved in experiment $\pm 46$ Hz. In case of deuterium atom the limit is essentially larger: $10^{-2}$ Hz. For 1s-2p resonance the accuracy limit is 0.17 MHz while the uncertainty of the recent frequency measurement is about 6 MHz.

One- and two-photon resonant spectroscopy of hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in external electric fields

The resonant spectra of hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in the presence of an external electric field are compared theoretically. It is shown that nonresonant corrections to the transition frequency contain terms linear in the electric field. The existence of these terms does not violate space and time parity and leads to a difference in the resonant spectroscopic measurements for hydrogen and anti-hydrogen atoms in an external electric field. The one-photon 1s-2p and the two-photon 1s-2s resonances are investigated.
