Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project. I. Strategy and Sample

While the reverberation mapping technique is the best available method for measuring black hole mass in active galactic nuclei (AGN) beyond the local volume, this method has been mainly applied to relatively low-to-moderate luminosity AGNs at low redshift. We present the strategy of the Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project, which aims at measuring the time delay of the \Hb\ line emission with respect to AGN continuum, using a sample of relatively high luminosity AGNs out to z $\sim$0.5. We present simulated cross correlation results based on a number of mock light curves, in order to optimally determine monitoring duration and cadence. We describe our campaign strategy based on the simulation results and the availability of observing facilities. We present the sample selection, and the properties of the selected 100 AGNs, including the optical luminosity, expected time lag, black hole mass, and Eddington ratio.

Stability of the Broad Line Region Geometry and Dynamics in Arp 151 Over Seven Years

The Seyfert 1 galaxy Arp 151 was monitored as part of three reverberation mapping campaigns spanning $2008-2015$. We present modeling of these velocity-resolved reverberation mapping datasets using a geometric and dynamical model for the broad line region (BLR). By modeling each of the three datasets independently, we infer the evolution of the BLR structure in Arp 151 over a total of seven years and constrain the systematic uncertainties in non-varying parameters such as the black hole mass. We find that the BLR geometry of a thick disk viewed close to face-on is stable over this time, although the size of the BLR grows by a factor of $\sim 2$. The dynamics of the BLR are dominated by inflow and the inferred black hole mass is consistent for the three datasets, despite the increase in BLR size. Combining the inference for the three datasets yields a black hole mass and statistical uncertainty of $\log_{10}($M$_{\rm BH}/\rm{M}_{\odot})=6.82^{+0.09}_{-0.09}$ with a standard deviation in individual measurements of 0.13 dex.

The Lick AGN Monitoring Project 2011: Reverberation Mapping of Markarian 50

The Lick AGN Monitoring Project 2011 observing campaign was carried out over the course of 11 weeks in Spring 2011. Here we present the first results from this program, a measurement of the broad-line reverberation lag in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 50. Combining our data with supplemental observations obtained prior to the start of the main observing campaign, our dataset covers a total duration of 4.5 months. During this time, Mrk 50 was highly variable, exhibiting a maximum variability amplitude of a factor of 4 in the U-band continuum and a factor of 2 in the H-beta line. Using standard cross-correlation techniques, we find that H-beta and H-gamma lag the V-band continuum by tau_cen = 10.64(-0.93,+0.82) and 8.43(-1.28,+1.30) days, respectively, while the lag of He II 4686 is unresolved. The H-beta line exhibits a symmetric velocity-resolved reverberation signature with shorter lags in the high-velocity wings than in the line core, consistent with an origin in a broad-line region dominated by orbital motion rather than infall or outflow. Assuming a virial normalization factor of f=5.25, the virial estimate of the black hole mass is (3.2+-0.5)*10^7 solar masses. These observations demonstrate that Mrk 50 is among the most promising nearby active galaxies for detailed investigations of broad-line region structure and dynamics.

Higgs bosons of a supersymmetric $U(1)'$ model at the ILC

We study the scalar Higgs sector of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with an extra U(1), which has two Higgs doublets and a Higgs singlet, in the light leptophobic $Z'$ scenario where the extra neutral gauge boson $Z'$ does not couple to charged leptons. In this model, we find that the sum of the squared coupling coefficients of the three neutral scalar Higgs bosons to $ZZ$, normalized by the corresponding SM coupling coefficient is noticeably smaller than unity, due to the effect of the extra U(1), for a reasonable parameter space of the model, whereas it is unity in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model. Thus, these two models may be distinguished if the coupling coefficients of neutral scalar Higgs bosons to $ZZ$ are measured at the future International Linear Collider by producing them via the Higgs-strahlung, $ZZ$ fusion, and $WW$ fusion processes.

The Higgs search of the MSSM with explicit CP violation at the LHC and ILC

We study the neutral Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with explicit CP violation at the one-loop level. We take into account the one-loop contributions by the top quark, the stop quarks, the bottom quark, the sbottom quarks, the tau lepton, the stau leptons, the $W$ boson, the charged Higgs boson, the charginos, the $Z$ boson, the neutral Higgs bosons, and the neutralinos. The production cross sections of the neutral Higgs boson are calculated to the leading order. The processes in our consideration are divided in two groups: the Higgs-strahlung and gluon fusion processes accessible at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and the vector boson fusion and Higgs-strahlung processes accessible at the $e^+e^-$ International Linear Collider (ILC). In particular, we investigate the dependence of these processes on the CP phase arising from the U(1) factor of the gaugino mass in the neutralino mass matrix. We show that the cross sections of these processes vary by the range of 3% $-$ 19 % as the CP phase changes from zero to $π$.

Higgs bosons of the NMSSM with explicit CP violation at the ILC

We study the Higgs sector of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) with explicit CP violation at the one-loop level, where the radiative corrections due to the quarks and squarks of the third generation are taken into account. We expect that, within a reasonable region of the parameter space of the present model, at least one of five neutral Higgs bosons may be produced at the future $e^+ e^-$ International Linear Collider (ILC) with $\sqrt{s} = 500$ GeV, with cross section larger than 12 fb, 15 fb, and 1.5 fb, respectively, via the Higgs-strahlung process, the $WW$ fusion process, and the $ZZ$ fusion process. We find that the effect of the CP phase in the present model yields significant influences upon the production cross sections of the five neutral Higgs bosons. We also study the decay modes of the five neutral Higgs bosons to find that their decay widths are similarly affected by the CP phase. Some of the decay modes in the present model behave differently from those of the Standard Model.

Time resolution of Burle 85001 micro-channel plate photo-multipliers in comparison with Hamamatsu R2083

The CLAS detector will require improvements in its particle identification system to take advantage of the higher energies provided by the Jefferson Laboratory accelerator upgrade to 12 GeV. To this end, we have studied the timing characteristics of the micro-channel plate photo-multiplier 85001 from Burle, which can be operated in a high magnetic field environment. For reference and comparison, measurements were also made using the standard PMT R2083 from Hamamatsu using two timing methods. The cosmic ray method, which utilizes three identical scintillating counters 2cmx3cmx50cm with PMs at the ends, yields 59.1(0.7)ps. The location method of particles from radiative source with known coordiantes has been used to compare timing resolutions of R2083 and Burle-85001.This ``coordinate method'' requires only one counter instrumented with two PMs and it yields 59.5(0.7)ps. For the micro-channel plate photomultiplier from Burle with an external amplification of 10 to the signals, the coordinate method yields 130(4)ps. This method also makes it possible to estimate the number of primary photo-electrons.

Electroweak phase transition in the MSSM with four generations

By assuming the existence of the sequential fourth generation to the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), we study the possibility of a strongly first-order electroweak phase transition. We find that there is a parameter region of the MSSM where the electroweak phase transition is strongly first order. In that parameter region, the mass of the lighter scalar Higgs boson is calculated to be above the experimental lower bound, and the scalar quarks of the third and the fourth generations are heavier than the corresponding quarks.

Electroweak phase transition in a nonminimal supersymmetric model

The Higgs potential of the minimal nonminimal supersymmetric standard model (MNMSSM) is investigated within the context of electroweak phase transition. We investigate the allowed parameter space yielding correct electroweak phase transitoin employing a high temperature approximation. We devote to phenomenological consequences for the Higgs sector of the MNMSSM for electron-positron colliders. It is observed that a future $e^+ e^-$ linear collider with $\sqrt{s} = 1000$ GeV will be able to test the model with regard to electroweak baryogenesis.

The neutral Higgs boson masses of MSSM at one-loop level in explicit CP violation scenario

The neutral Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) in explicit CP violation scenario is investigated at the one-loop level. Within the context of the effective potential formalism, the masses of the neutral Higgs bosons are calculated at the one-loop level by taking into account the contributions of the following loops of ordinary particles and superpartners: top quark, the scalar top quarks, bottom quark, the scalar bottom quarks, tau lepton, the scalar tau leptons, $W$ boson, the charged Higgs boson, the charginos, $Z$ boson, the scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs bosons, and the neutralinos. Our calculation is an improvement in the sense that both the terms which are quartic in the electroweak coupling constants into account, and the pseudoscalar Higgs loop contribution are explicitly included.

An ionization chamber for (n,z) reaction cross section measurements on gaseous targets

An ionization chamber with gaseous samples has been designed. It has been tested on the beam of the pulsed reactor IBR-30 of FLNP, JINR-Dubna. The experiment has been carried out with resonance neutrons. The exposed gas volume serves as a target for neutron beam. We have compared the chamber to samples on substrates, the background component due to Li and B microimpurities in this case is totally absent. It has been tested also the recovery capability of the chamber after the reactor power pulse using the protons from the 3He(n,p)3H reaction, alpha-particles from a U-source and a pulsed precision generator. Moreover the energy resolution of the chamber with its equipment has been carried out.

Possibility of spontaneous CP violation in the nonminimal supersymmetric standard model with two neutral Higgs singlets

A supersymmetric standard model with two Higgs doublets and two Higgs singlets is investigated if it can accommodate the possibility of spontaneous CP violation. Assuming the degeneracy of the scalar quark masses of the third generation, we find that spontaneous CP violation in the Higgs sector is viable in our model. In the case of spontaneous CP violation, the masses of the lightest two neutral Higgs bosons are estimated to be 80 and 125 GeV for some parameter values in our model, which, are consistent with LEP2 data.

Charged Higgs boson in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with explicit CP violation

The phenomenology of the explicit CP violation in the Higgs sector of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) is investigated, with emphasis on the charged Higgs boson. The radiative corrections due to both quarks and scalar-quarks of the third generation are taken into account, and the negative result of the search for the Higgs bosons at CERN LEP2, with the discovery limit of 0.1 pb, is imposed as a constraint. It is found that there are parameter regions of the NMSSM where the lightest neutral Higgs boson may even be massless, without being detected at LEP2. This implies that the LEP2 data do not contradict the existence of a massless neutral Higgs boson in the NMSSM. For the charged Higgs boson, the radiative corrections to its mass may be negative in some parameter regions of the NMSSM. The phenomenological lower bound on the radiatively corrected mass of the charged Higgs boson is increased as the CP violation becomes maximal, i.e., as the CP violating phase becomes $π/2$. At the maximal CP violation, its lower bound is about 110 GeV for 5 $\leqslant \tan β\leqslant$ 40. The vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the neutral Higgs singlet is shown to be no smaller than 16 GeV for any parameter values of the NMSSM with explicit CP violation. This value of the lower limit is found to increase up to about 45 GeV as the ratio ($\tan β$) of the VEVs of the two Higgs doublets decreases to smaller values ($\sim$ 2). The discovery limit of the Higgs boson search at LEP2 is found to cover about a half of the kinematically allowed part of the whole parameter space of the NMSSM, and the portion is roughly stable against the CP violating phase.

Neutral Higgs sector of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with explicit CP violation

The neutral Higgs sector of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) with explicit CP violation is investigated at the 1-loop level, using the effective potential method; not only the loops involving the third generation of quarks and scalar quarks, but also the loops involving $W$ boson, charged Higgs boson, and chargino are taken into account. It is found that for some parameter values of the NMSSM the contributions from the $W$ boson, charged Higgs boson, and chargino loops may modify the masses of the neutral Higgs bosons and the mixings among them significantly, depending on the CP phase. In $e^+e^-$ collisions, the prospects for discovering neutral Higgs bosons are investigated within the context of the NMSSM with explicit CP violation when the dominant component of the lightest neutral Higgs boson is the Higgs singlet field of the NMSSM.

The ZEUS Forward Plug Calorimeter with Lead-Scintillator Plates and WLS Fiber Readout

A Forward Plug Calorimeter (FPC) for the ZEUS detector at HERA has been built as a shashlik lead-scintillator calorimeter with wave length shifter fiber readout. Before installation it was tested and calibrated using the X5 test beam facility of the SPS accelerator at CERN. Electron, muon and pion beams in the momentum range of 10 to 100 GeV/c were used. Results of these measurements are presented as well as a calibration monitoring system based on a $^{60}$Co source.
