Dynamic Plasma Shape Control with Arbitrary Sensor Subsets

Plasma shape control in tokamaks requires a real-time controller that tracks dynamically changing shape targets while tolerating diagnostic failures. Classical approaches decompose the problem into equilibrium reconstruction followed by a linear controller, and assume a fixed, fully operational sensor set. We present a reinforcement learning agent that addresses both limitations simultaneously. The agent is trained in NSFsim, a high-fidelity tokamak simulator configured for DIII-D, on a curated dataset of 120 experimental plasma shapes. The shape targets are resampled as random step changes every 0.25 s, exposing the agent to diverse transitions across the full shape envelope. At test time the agent zero-shot tracks dynamic shape sequences; on a held-out static configuration in simulation it achieves a mean shape error of 2.01 cm, and dynamic trajectory following is demonstrated qualitatively in simulation and on the physical device. Diagnostic dropout randomly masks 30% of magnetic sensors per episode, yielding a single policy robust to arbitrary sensor subsets without backup controllers or mode-switching logic. An asymmetric actor-critic architecture with privileged equilibrium information improves value estimation under partial observability; an auxiliary shape reconstruction head on the actor enables end-to-end shape reconstruction from raw diagnostics and serves as an interpretability tool for policy analysis. The policy transfers to experimental DIII-D shots, where it directly commands the coil actuators on two dynamic shape maneuvers, and to the independent GSevolve simulator.

TreeDQN: Sample-Efficient Off-Policy Reinforcement Learning for Combinatorial Optimization

A convenient approach to optimally solving combinatorial optimization tasks is the Branch-and-Bound method. Its branching heuristic can be learned to solve a large set of similar tasks. The promising results here are achieved by the recently appeared on-policy reinforcement learning method based on the tree Markov Decision Process. To overcome its main disadvantages, namely, very large training time and unstable training, we propose TreeDQN (Tree Deep Q-Network), a sample-efficient off-policy RL method trained by optimizing the geometric mean of expected return. To theoretically support the training procedure for our method, we prove the contraction property of the Bellman operator for the tree MDP. As a result, our method requires up to 10 times less training data and performs faster than known on-policy methods on synthetic tasks. Moreover, TreeDQN significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art techniques on a challenging practical task from the ML4CO competition.

Higher Forms and Membranes in 4D Supergravities

We review the dynamical generation of coupling constants in 4D supergravity by means of gauge three-form fields. The latter are introduced as components of particular chiral supermultiplets and can be coupled to membranes preserving local supersymmetry. Such a set-up naturally arises from type-II string compactifications on Calabi-Yau manifolds with fluxes. We present generic 4D $\mathcal N=1$ supergravity models with three-form multiplets and study domain wall solutions supported by membranes, which interpolate between vacua with different values of the cosmological constant.

Superconformal structures on the three-sphere

With the motivation to develop superconformal field theory on S^3, we introduce a 2n-extended supersphere S^{3|4n}, with n=1,2,..., as a homogeneous space of the three-dimensional Euclidean superconformal group OSp(2n|2,2) such that its bosonic body is S^3. Supertwistor and bi-supertwistor realizations of S^{3|4n} are derived. We study in detail the n=1 case, which is unique in the sense that the R-symmetry subgroup SO^*(2n) of the superconformal group is compact only for n=1. In particular, we show that the OSp(2|2,2) transformations preserve the chiral subspace of S^{3|4}. Several supercoset realizations of S^{3|4n} are presented. Harmonic/projective extensions of the supersphere by auxiliary bosonic fibre directions are sketched.

Gauge and matter superfield theories on $S^2$

We develop a superfield formulation of gauge and matter field theories on a two-dimensional sphere with rigid N=(2,2) as well as extended supersymmetry. The construction is based on a supercoset SU(2|1)/[U(1) x U(1)] containing $S^2$ as the bosonic subspace. We derive an explicit form of supervielbein and covariant derivatives on this coset, and use them to construct classical superfield actions for gauge and matter supermultiplets in this superbackground. We then apply superfield methods for computing one-loop partition functions of these theories and demonstrate how the localization technique works directly in the superspace.

Superfield theories on $S^3$ and their localization

We consider the superfield formulation of supersymmetric gauge and matter field theories on a three-dimensional sphere with rigid ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry, as well as with ${\cal N}> 2$. The construction is based on a supercoset $SU(2|1)/U(1)$ containing $S^3$ as the bosonic subspace. We derive an explicit form of $SU(2|1)/U(1)$ supervielbein and covariant derivatives, and use them to construct classical superfield actions for gauge and matter supermultiplets in this superbackground. We then apply superfield methods for computing one-loop partition functions of these theories and demonstrate how the localization technique works directly in the superspace.

Superstrings in AdS(2)xS(2)xT(6)

We consider the type IIB Green-Schwarz superstring theory on AdS(2)xS(2)xT(6) supported by homogeneous Ramond-Ramond 5-form flux and its type IIA T-duals. One motivation is to understand the solution of this theory based on integrability. This background is a limit of a 1/4 supersymmetric supergravity solution describing four intersecting D3-branes and represents a consistent embedding of AdS(2)xS(2) into critical superstring theory. Its AdS(2)xS(2) part with corresponding fermions can be described by a classically integrable PSU(1,1|2)/SO(1,1)xU(1) supercoset sigma-model. We point out that since the RR 5-form field has non-zero components along the 6-torus directions one cannot, in general, factorize the 10d superstring theory into the supercoset part plus 6 bosons and 6 additional massless fermions. Still, we demonstrate that the full superstring model (i) is classically integrable, at least to quadratic order in fermions, and (ii) admits a consistent classical truncation to the supercoset part. Following the analogy with other integrable backgrounds and starting with the finite-gap equations of the PSU(1,1|2)/SO(1,1)xU(1) supercoset we propose a set of asymptotic Bethe ansatz equations for a subset of the quantum string states.

Q-instantons

We construct the half-supersymmetric instanton solutions that are electric-magnetically dual to the recently discussed half-supersymmetric Q7-branes. We call these instantons `Q-instantons'. Whereas the D-instanton is most conveniently described using the RR axion χand the dilaton ϕ, the Q-instanton is most conveniently described using a different set of fields χ' and T, where χ' is an axionic scalar. The real part of the Q-instanton on-shell action is a function of T and the imaginary part is linear in χ'. Discrete shifts of the axion χ' correspond to PSL(2,Z) transformations that are of finite order. These are e.g. pure S-duality transformations relating weak and strongly coupled regimes. We argue that near each orbifold point of the quantum axion-dilaton moduli space PSL(2,Z)\PSL(2,R)/SO(2) the higher order R^4 terms in the string effective action contain contributions from an infinite sum of single multiply-charged instantons with the Q-instantons corresponding to the orbifold points τ=i,ρwhere τis the complex axion-dilaton field.

Dynamics of Higher Spin Fields and Tensorial Space

The structure and the dynamics of massless higher spin fields in various dimensions are reviewed with an emphasis on conformally invariant higher spin fields. We show that in D=3,4,6 and 10 dimensional space-time the conformal higher spin fields constitute the quantum spectrum of a twistor-like particle propagating in tensorial spaces of corresponding dimensions. We give a detailed analysis of the field equations of the model and establish their relation with known formulations of free higher spin field theory.

N=4 Superconformal Mechanics and the Potential Structure of AdS Spaces

The dynamics of an N=4 spinning particle in a curved background is described using the N=4 superfield formalism. The $SU(2)_{local}\times SU(2)_{global}$ N=4 superconformal symmetry of the particle action requires the background to be a real "Kähler-like" manifold whose metric is generated by a sigma-model superpotential. The anti-de-Sitter spaces are shown to belong to this class of manifolds.

The M5-brane Hamiltonian

We obtain the Hamiltonian form of the worldvolume action for the M5-brane in a general D=11 supergravity background. We use this result to obtain a new version of the covariant M5-brane Lagrangian in which the tension appears as a dynamical variable, although this Lagrangian has some unsatisfactory features which we trace to peculiarities of the null limit. We also show that the M5-brane action is invariant under all (super)isometries of the background.

NOTE ON MANIFEST LORENTZ AND GENERAL COORDINATE INVARIANCE IN DUALITY SYMMETRIC MODELS.

We consider a generalization of a duality symmetric model proposed by Schwarz and Sen. It is based on enlarging the model with a dynamical vector field being a time-like component of a local Lorentz frame. This allows one to preserve the manifest Lorentz invariance of the model in flat space--time. The presence of this field is regarded as a relic of gravitational interaction which respects the general coordinate invariance in curved space--time but breaks the local Lorentz symmetry in tangent space down to its spatial subgroup.

TWISTOR-LIKE SUPERPARTICLES REVISITED.

We consider a formulation of N=1 D=3,4 and 6 superparticle mechanics, which is manifestly supersymmetric on the worldline and in the target superspace. For the construction of the action we use only geometrical objects that characterize the embedding of the worldline superspace into the target superspace, such as target superspace coordinates of the superparticle and twistor components. The action does not contain the Lagrange multipliers which may cause the problem of infinite reducible symmetries, and, in fact, is a worldline superfield generalization of the supertwistor description of superparticle dynamics.

SUPERSTRINGS AND SUPERMEMBRANES IN THE DOUBLY SUPERSYMMETRIC GEOMETRICAL APPROACH

We perform a generalization of the geometrical approach to describing extended objects for studying the doubly supersymmetric twistor--like formulation of super--p--branes. Some basic features of embedding world supersurface into target superspace specified by a geometrodynamical condition are considered. It is shown that the main attributes of the geometrical approach, such as the second fundamental form and extrinsic torsion of the embedded surface, and the Codazzi, Gauss and Ricci equations, have their doubly supersymmetric counterparts. At the same time the embedding of supersurface into target superspace has its particular features. For instance, the embedding may cause more rigid restrictions on the geometrical properties of the supersurface. This is demonstrated with the examples of an N=1 twistor--like supermembrane in D=11 and type II superstrings in D=10, where the geometrodynamical condition causes the embedded supersurface to be minimal and puts the theories on the mass shell.
