Performance analysis of FSO using relays and spatial diversity under log-normal fading channel

The performance analysis of free space optical communication (FSO) system using relays and spatial diversity at the source is studied in this paper. The effect of atmospheric turbulence and attenuation, caused by different weather conditions and geometric losses, has also been considered for analysis. The exact closed-form expressions are presented for bit error rate (BER) of M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) technique for multi-hop multiple-input single-output (MISO) FSO system under log-normal fading channel. Furthermore, the link performance of multi-hop MISO and multi-hop single-input and single-output (SISO) FSO systems are compared to the different systems using on-off keying (OOK), repetition codes (RCs) and M-ary pulse amplitude modulation (M-PAM) techniques. A significant performance enhancement in terms of BER analysis and SNR gains is shown for multi-hop MISO and multi-hop SISO FSO systems with M-QAM over other existing systems with different modulation schemes. Moreover, Monte-Carlo simulations are used to validate the accuracy and consistency of the derived analytical results. Numerical results show that M-QAM modulated multi-hop MISO and multi-hop SISO FSO system with relays and spatial diversity outperforms other systems while having the same spectral efficiency of each system.

Achievable Rate Analysis of Relay Assisted Cooperative NOMA over Rician Fading Channels

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a key to multiple access techniques for the next generation 5G wireless communication networks. In this paper, to improve the performance gain of NOMA system, a cooperative fixed decode-and-forward (DF) relay system model based on NOMA (CRS-NOMA) is studied over Rician fading channels, considering the achievable rate of signals as the performance metric. In this technique, by exploiting the concept of NOMA, unlike the conventional method of cooperative relaying, the second time slot is also utilized for the realization of information sent from the transmitter end. Moreover, as the data symbols are transmitted by nodes with full power, the compulsion of complex power allocation coefficients is precluded. In conventional cooperative relaying systems, the receiver is only able to receive a single bit of information, while the receiver can reliably bring in two data symbols in two-time slots. In this regard, this scheme is able to acquire higher achievable rate performance than existing cooperative relaying schemes for larger channel powers over most of the transmit SNR regime. Furthermore, a mathematical expression is also derived for the total achievable rate of CRS-NOMA. The results are verified through Monte-Carlo simulations which validate accuracy and consistency of the derived analytical results.

An Opportunistic-Non Orthogonal Multiple Access based Cooperative Relaying system over Rician Fading Channels

Non-orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) has become a salient technology for improving the spectral efficiency of the next generation 5G wireless communication networks. In this paper, the achievable average rate of an Opportunistic Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (O-NOMA) based Cooperative Relaying System (CRS) is studied under Rician fading channels with Channel State Information (CSI) available at the source terminal. Based on CSI, for opportunistic transmission, the source immediately chooses either the direct transmission or the cooperative NOMA transmission using the relay, which can provide better achievable average rate performance than the existing Conventional-NOMA (C-NOMA) based CRS with no CSI at the source node. Furthermore, a mathematical expression is also derived for the achievable average rate and the results are compared with C-NOMA based CRS with no CSI at the transmitter end, over a range of increasing power allocation coefficients, transmit Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) and average channel powers. Numerical results show that the CRS using O-NOMA with CSI achieves better spectral efficiency in terms of the achievable average rate than the Conventional-NOMA based CRS without CSI. To check the consistency of the derived analytical results, Monte Carlo simulations are performed which verify that the results are consistent and matched well with the simulation results.

Achievable Rate Analysis of Cooperative Relay Assisted Opportunistic-NOMA under Rician Fading Channels with Channel State Information

The average achievable rate of an Opportunistic Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (O-NOMA) based Cooperative Relaying System (CRS) with Channel State Information (CSI) known at the transmitter end is analyzed under Rician fading channels. For opportunistic transmission of data signals, CSI is used for the source-to-relay and source-to-destination links, which helps the transmitter to select the best out of the cooperative NOMA transmission and the direct transmission of signals, instantaneously. The average achievable rate of the O-NOMA and conventional NOMA (C-NOMA) based CRSs is considered for the performance comparison and the exact and asymptotic analytical expressions of the achievable rates has been provided. Asymptotic results are verified through Monte Carlo simulations for various channel powers and power allocation coefficients. Numerical results verify that the derived analytical results are matched well with the Monte Carlo simulations and shows that O-NOMA-based CRS achieves better rate performance than C-NOMA-based CRS with the increasing power allocation coefficients, transmit Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) and channel powers.

Performance Analysis of FSO System with Spatial Diversity and Relays for M-QAM over Log-Normal Channel

The performance analysis of free space optical communication (FSO) systems using relays and spatial diversity at the transmitter end is presented in this paper. The impact of atmospheric turbulence and attenuation caused by different weather conditions and geometric losses has also been taken into account. The effect of turbulence is modeled over a log-normal probability density function. We present the exact closed form expressions of bit-error rate (BER) for M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM). The FSO system link performance is compared for on-off keying, M-ary pulse amplitude modulation and M-QAM modulation techniques. For relay based free space optical communication systems, M-QAM is proved to be superior than other systems considering the same spectral efficiency for each system. A significant performance enhancement in terms of BER analysis and SNR gains is shown for multi-hop MISO FSO system.

Challenges and potentials for visible light communications: State of the art

Visible Light Communication is the emerging field in the area of Indoor Optical Wireless Communication which uses white light LEDs for transmitting data and light simultaneously. LEDs can be modulated at very high speeds which increases its efficiency and enabling it for the dual purposes of data communication and illumination simultaneously. Radio Frequency have some limitations which is not at par with the current demand of bandwidth but using visible light, it is possible to achieve higher data rates per user. In this paper, we discuss some challenges, potentials and possible future applications for this new technology. Basically, visible light communication is for indoor application capable of multiuser access. We also design a very basic illumination pattern inside a room using uniform power distribution.

Performance analysis of dual-hop optical wireless communication systems over k-distribution turbulence channel with pointing error

In this paper, we investigate the performance of the dual-hop free space optical (FSO) communication systems under the effect of strong atmospheric turbulence together with misalignment effects (pointing error). We consider a relay assisted link using decode and forward (DF) relaying protocol between source and destination with the assumption that Channel State Information is available at both transmitting and receiving terminals. The atmospheric turbulence channels are modeled by k-distribution with pointing error impairment. The exact closed form expression is derived for outage probability and bit error rate and illustrated through numerical plots. Further BER results are compared for the different modulation schemes.
