Advantages of gated silicon single photon detectors

We present a gated silicon single photon detector based on a commercially available avalanche photodiode. Our detector achieves a photon detection efficiency of 45\pm5% at 808 nm with 2x 10^-6 dark count per ns at -30V of excess bias and -30°C. We compare gated and free-running detectors and show that this mode of operation has significant advantages in two representative experimental scenarios: detecting a single photon either hidden in faint continuous light or after a strong pulse. We also explore, at different temperatures and incident light intensities, the "charge persistence" effect, whereby a detector clicks some time after having been illuminated.

Long term performance of the SwissQuantum quantum key distribution network in a field environment

In this paper, we report on the performance of the SwissQuantum quantum key distribution (QKD) network. The network was installed in the Geneva metropolitan area and run for more than one and a half years, from the end of March 2009 to the beginning of January 2011. The main goal of this experiment was to test the reliability of the quantum layer over a long period of time in a production environment. A key management layer has been developed to manage the key between the three nodes of the network. This QKD-secure network was used by end-users through an application layer.

Free-running InGaAs/InP Avalanche Photodiode with Active Quenching for Single Photon Counting at Telecom Wavelengths

We present an InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiode with an active quenching circuit on an ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) that is capable of operating in both gated and free-running modes. The 1.6mm2 ASIC chip is fabricated using CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) technology guaranteeing long-term stability, reliability and compactness. In the free-running mode we find a single photon detection efficiency of 10% with <2kHz of noise.

Quantum Key Distribution over 67 km with a plug & play system

We present a fibre-optical quantum key distribution system. It works at 1550nm and is based on the plug & play setup. We tested the stability under field conditions using aerial and terrestrial cables and performed a key exchange over 67 km between Geneva and Lausanne.
