Ir 5$d$-band Derived Superconductivity in LaIr$_3$

We have studied the superconducting properties of LaIr$_3$ with a rhombohedral structure using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. The zero-field cooled and field cooled susceptibility measurements exhibit a superconducting transition below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K. Magnetization measurements indicate bulk type-II superconductivity with upper critical field $μ_0H_{\mathrm{c2}}(0)$ = 3.84 T. Two successive transitions are observed in heat capacity data, one at $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K and a second at 1.2 K below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ whose origin remain unclear. The heat capacity jump reveals $ΔC$/$γT_{\mathrm{C}} \sim$ 1.0 which is lower than 1.43 expected for BCS weak coupling limit. Transverse field-$μ$SR measurements reveal a fully gapped $s-$wave superconductivity with 2$Δ(0)/k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 3.31, which is small compared to BCS value 3.56, suggesting weak coupling superconductivity. Moreover the study of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth estimated using the transverse field-$μ$SR measurements gives a zero temperature value of the magnetic penetration depth $λ_{\mathrm{L}}(0)$ = 386(3) nm, superconducting carrier density $n_{\mathrm{s}}$ = 2.9(1) $\times$10$^{27}$ carriers $m^{-3}$ and the carriers' effective-mass enhancement $m^{*}$ = 1.53(1) $m_{\mathrm{e}}$. Our zero-field-$μ$SR measurements do not reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature, which indicates that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of LaIr$_3$.

Superconductivity in Ru0.55Rh0.45P and Ru0.75Rh0.25As probed by muon spin relaxation and rotation measurements

Superconductivity in the pseudo-binary pnictides Ru0.55Rh0.45P and Ru0.75Rh0.25As is probed by muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements in conjuction with magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements. Powder x-ray diffraction confirmed the MnP-type orthorhombic structure (space group Pnma) and showed a nearly single phase nature with small impurity phase(s) of about 5% for both the samples. The occurence of bulk superconductivity is confirmed with Tc = 3.7 K for Ru0.55Rh0.45P and T = 1.6 K for Ru0.75Rh0.25As. The superconducting state electronic heat capacity data reveal weak-coupling single-band isotropic s-wave gap BCS superconductivity. Various normal and superconducting state parameters are determined which reveal a weak-coupling electron-phonon driven type-II dirty-limit superconductivity for both the compounds. The upper critical field shows a linear temperature dependence down to the lowest measured temperatures which is quite unusual for a single-band superconductor. The muSR data confirm the conventional type-II behavior, and show evidence for a single-band s-wave singlet pairing superconductivity with a preserved time reversal symmetry for both the compounds.

A brief review on muSR studies of unconventional Fe and Cr-based superconductors

Muon spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) is a vital technique for probing the superconducting gap structure, pairing symmetry and time reversal symmetry breaking, enabling an understanding of the mechanisms behind the unconventional superconductivity of cuprates and Fe-based high-temperature superconductors, which remain a puzzle. Very recently double layered Fe-based super-conductors having quasi-2D crystal structures and Cr-based superconductors with a quasi-1D structure have drawn considerable attention. Here we present a brief review of the characteristics of a few selected Fe- and Cr-based superconducting materials and highlight some of the major outstanding problems, with an emphasis on the superconducting pairing symmetries of these materials. We focus on muSR studies of the newly discovered superconductors ACa2Fe4As4F2(A = K, Rb, and Cs), ThFeAsN, and A2Cr3As3(A = K, Cs), which were used to determine the superconducting gap structures, the presence of spin fluctuations, and to search for time reversal symmetry breaking in the superconducting states. We also briefly discuss the results of muSR investigations of the superconductivity in hole and electron doped BaFe2As2.

Evidence of Nodal Line in the Superconducting Gap Symmetry of Noncentrosymmetric ThCoC$_{2}$

The newly discovered noncentrosymmetric superconductor ThCoC$_{2}$ exhibits numerous unconventional behavior in the field dependent heat capacity data. Here we present the first measurement of the gap symmetry of ThCoC$_{2}$ by muon spin rotation/relaxation $(μ$SR) measurements. Temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth measured using the transverse field $μ$SR measurement reveal the evidence of nodal pairing symmetry. To understand these findings, we carry out the calculations of superconducting pairing eigenvalue and eigenfunction symmetry due to the spin-fluctuation mechanism, by directly implemented the {\it ab-initio} band structures. We find that the system possesses a single Fermi surface with considerable three-dimensionality, and hence a strong nesting along the $k_z$-direction. Such a nesting promotes a superconducting pairing with a $\cos{k_z}$-like symmetry with a prominent nodal line on the $k_z=\pmπ/2$ plane. The result agrees well with the experimental data.

Spin dynamics and field-induced magnetic phase transition in the honeycomb Kitaev magnet $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

The layered honeycomb iridate $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ displays an incommensurate magnetic structure with counterrotating moments on nearest-neighbor sites, proposed to be stabilized by strongly-frustrated anisotropic Kitaev interactions between spin-orbit entangled Ir$^{4+}$ magnetic moments. Here we report powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements that observe sharply dispersive low-energy magnetic excitations centered at the magnetic ordering wavevector, attributed to Goldstone excitations of the incommensurate order, as well as an additional intense mode above a gap $Δ\simeq2.3$ meV. Zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements show clear oscillations in the muon polarization below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}\simeq15$ K with a time-dependent profile consistent with bulk incommensurate long-range magnetism. Pulsed field magnetization measurements observe that only about half the saturation magnetization value is reached at the maximum field of 64 T. A clear anomaly near 25 T indicates a transition to a phase with reduced susceptibility. The transition field has a Zeeman energy comparable to the zero-field gapped mode, suggesting gap suppression as a possible mechanism for the field-induced transition.

Spin Waves in Detwinned BaFe$_2$As$_2$

Understanding magnetic interactions in the parent compounds of high-temperature superconductors forms the basis for determining their role for the mechanism of superconductivity. For parent compounds of iron pnictide superconductors such as $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($A=$ Ba, Ca, Sr), although spin excitations have been mapped out throughout the entire Brillouin zone (BZ), measurements were carried out on twinned samples and did not allow for a conclusive determination of the spin dynamics. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to completely map out spin excitations of $\sim$100\% detwinned BaFe$_2$As$_2$. By comparing observed spectra with theoretical calculations, we conclude that the spin excitations can be well described by an itinerant model with important contributions from electronic correlations.

Phonons and Anomalous Thermal Expansion Behaviour of H2O and D2O ice Ih

In order to identify and quantitatively analyze the anharmonicity of phonons relevant to the anomalous thermal expansion in the Ih phase of ice, we performed neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the phonon spectrum as a function of pressure up to 1 kbar at 225 K in deuterated ice (D2O), and as a function of temperature over 10-225 K at ambient pressure in both H2O and D2O ice. We also performed density functional theory calculations of the lattice dynamics. The anomalous expansion is quantitatively reproduced from the analysis of the neutron data as well as from the ab-initio calculations. Further, the ab-initio calculations are used to visualize the nature of anharmonic phonons across a large part of the Brillouin zone. We find that the negative thermal expansion below 60 K in the hexagonal plane is due to anharmonic librational motion of the hexagonal rings of the ice molecules, and that along the hexagonal axis originates from the transverse vibrations of the hexagonal layers.

Multigap Superconductivity in a charge density wave superconductor LaPt2Si2

The superconducting gap structure of a charge density wave (CDW) superconductor LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ ($T_c$ = 1.6~K) having a quasi two dimensional crystal structure has been investigated using muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements carried out in transverse field (TF), zero field (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) geometries. Rigorous analysis of TF-$μ$SR spectra in the superconducting state corroborates that the temperature dependence of the effective penetration depth, $λ_L$, derived from muon spin depolarization, fits to an isotropic $s+s-$wave model suggesting that the Fermi surface contains two gaps of different magnitude rather than an isotropic gap expected for a conventional $s-$wave superconductor. On the other hand, ZF $μ$SR data do not show any significant change in muon spin relaxation rate above and below the superconducting transition indicating the fact that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the system.

Evidence for a dynamical ground state in a frustrated pyrohafnate Tb2Hf2O7

We report the physical properties of Tb2Hf2O7 based on ac magnetic susceptibility χ_ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements combined with muon spin relaxation (\muSR) and neutron powder diffraction measurements. No evidence for long-range magnetic order is found down to 0.1 K. However, χ_ac(T) data present a frequency-dependent broad peak (near 0.9 K at 16 Hz) indicating slow spin dynamics. The slow spin dynamics is further evidenced from the \muSR data (characterized by a stretched exponential behavior) which show persistent spin fluctuations down to 0.3 K. The neutron powder diffraction data collected at 0.1 K show a broad peak of magnetic origin (diffuse scattering) but no magnetic Bragg peaks. The analysis of the diffuse scattering data reveals a dominant antiferromagnetic interaction in agreement with the negative Weiss temperature. The absence of long-range magnetic order and the presence of slow spin dynamics and persistent spin fluctuations together reflect a dynamical ground state in Tb2Hf2O7.

Nodal multigap superconductivity in KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

We find evidence that the newly discovered Fe-based superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ ($T_c~=~33.36(7)$~K) displays multigap superconductivity with line nodes. Transverse field muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements show that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density does not have the expected behavior of a fully-gapped superconductor, due to the lack of saturation at low temperatures. Moreover, the data cannot be well fitted using either single band models or a multiband $s$-wave model, yet are well described by two-gap models with line nodes on either one or both of the gaps. Meanwhile the zero-field $μ$SR results indicate a lack of time reversal symmetry breaking in the superconducting state, but suggest the presence of magnetic fluctuations. These results demonstrate a different route for realizing nodal superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. Here the gap structure is drastically altered upon replacing one of the spacer layers, indicating the need to understand how the pairing state is tuned by changes of the asymmetry between the pnictogens located either side of the Fe planes.

Understanding the magnetism in noncentrosymmetric CeIrGe3: Muon spin relaxation and neutron scattering studies

The magnetic properties of a pressure induced noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrGe$_3$ have been investigated by muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR), powder neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) techniques at ambient pressure. For completeness we have also measured the ac magnetic susceptibility $χ_{\rm ac}(T)$, dc magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, dc isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ and heat capacity $C_{\rm p}(T,H)$ down to 2 K. CeIrGe$_{3}$ is known to exhibit pressure induced superconductivity ($T_{\rm c}\approx 1.5$ K) at a pressure of 20 GPa and antiferromagnetic ordering at 8.7 K, 4.7 K and 0.7 K at ambient pressure. Our $χ_{\rm ac}(T)$ and $χ(T)$ data show an additional anomaly near 6.2 K which is also captured in $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data. From $χ_{\rm ac}(T)$, $χ(T)$ and $C_{\rm p}(T)$ measurements we infer three antiferromagnetic transitions above 2 K at $T_{\rm N1}= 8.5$ K, $T_{\rm N2}= 6.0$ K and $T_{\rm N3}= 4.6$ K. Our $μ$SR study also confirms the presence of three transitions through the observation of one frequency for $T_{\rm N2} < T\leq T_{\rm N1}$, two frequencies for $T_{\rm N3} < T\leq T_{\rm N2}$ and three frequencies for $T\leq T_{\rm N3}$ in the oscillatory asymmetry. The ND data reveal an incommensurate nature of the magnetic ordering at $T=7$ K with the propagation vector k = (0,0,0.688(3)), and a commensurate magnetic structure at $T=1.5$ K with the propagation vector locked to the value k = (0,0,2/3) and magnetic moments oriented along the $c$ axis. The commensurate structure couples a macroscopic ferromagnetic component, resulting in a strong dependence of the lock-in transition temperature on external magnetic field. The INS data show two well defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations arising from the CEF-split Kramers doublet ground state of Ce$^{3+}$.

Muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering investigations of all-in/all-out antiferromagnet Nd2Hf2O7

Nd2Hf2O7, belonging to the family of geometrically frustrated cubic rare earth pyrochlore oxides, was recently identified to order antiferromagnetically below T_N = 0.55 K with an all-in/all-out arrangement of Nd3+ moments, however with a much reduced ordered state moment. Herein we investigate the spin dynamics and crystal field states of Nd2Hf2O7 using muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. Our muSR study confirms the long range magnetic ordering and shows evidence for coexisting persistent dynamic spin fluctuations deep inside the ordered state down to 42 mK. The INS data show the crytal electric field (CEF) excitations due to the transitions both within the ground state multiplet and to the first excited state multiplet. The INS data are analyzed by a model based on CEF and crystal field states are determined. Strong Ising-type anisotropy is inferred from the ground state wavefunction. The CEF parameters indicate the CEF-split Kramers doublet ground state of Nd3+ to be consistent with the dipolar-octupolar character.

Complex nature of magnetic field-induced ferroelectricity in GdCrTiO5

This work shows an unconventional route for spin-driven ferroelectricity originating from a metastable magnetic field-induced canting of chromium sublattice in the presence of gadolinium moments in GdCrTiO5 at low temperatures. Compared to the isostructural neodymium compound, significant differences of magnetism and magnetoelectric effects are seen. We present the results of thorough investigations of temperature and magnetic field dependent magnetization as well as ac and dc magnetic susceptibility. These bulk measurements are complemented by local-probe spectroscopy utilizing electron-spin resonance and muon-spin rotation/relaxation for probing the chromium moments. Ferroelectric order is inferred from pyro- and magnetocurrent measurements. GdCrTiO5 shows a pyrocurrent signal around 10 K, only if the system is cooled in an applied magnetic field exceeding 10 kOe. A distinct spin-driven ferroelectric order is revealed in this state for temperatures below 10 K, which can be switched by changing magnetic-field direction and the polarity of the electric field. But, the magnetic measurements reveal no clear signature of long-range magnetic ordering. The presence of such meta-magnetoelectric-type behaviour in the absence of any meta-magnetic behavior is rare in the literature. Our microscopic spectroscopy results indicate significant changes of the magnetic properties around 10 K. Probably there is an exchange frustration between Gd and Cr moments, which prevents long-range magnetic ordering at further high temperature. Below 10 K, weak magnetic ordering occurs by minimizing frustration due to lattice distortion, which helps in magnetodielectric coupling. However, the non-polar distortion attains appreciable values after application of magnetic fields above 10 kOe to break the spatial inversion symmetry, which creates ferroelectricity.

Zero-Field Ambient-Pressure Quantum Criticality in the Stoichiometric Non-Fermi Liquid System CeRhBi

The strange electronic state of a class of materials which violates the predictions of conventional Fermi-liquid theory of metals remains enigmatic. Proximity to a quantum critical point is a possible origin of this non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior, which is usually accomplished by tuning the ground state with non-thermal control parameters such as chemical composition, magnetic field or pressure. We present the spin dynamics study of a stoichiometric NFL system CeRhBi, using low-energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements. It shows evidence for an energy-temperature (E/T) scaling in the INS dynamic response and a time-field scaling of the muSR asymmetry function indicating a quantum critical behavior in this compound. The E/T scaling reveals a local character of quantum criticality consistent with the power-law divergence of the magnetic susceptibility, logarithmic divergence of the magnetic heat capacity and T-linear resistivity at low temperature. The NFL behavior and local criticality occur over a very wide dynamical range at zero field and ambient pressure without any tuning in this stoichiometric heavy fermion compound is striking, making CeRhBi an exemplary model system amenable to in-depth studies for quantum criticality.

Magnetic excitations from the two-dimensional interpenetrating Cu framework in Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$

We report detailed neutron scattering studies on Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$. The compound consists of two interpenetrating sublattices of Cu, labeled as Cu$_{\rm A}$ and Cu$_{\rm B}$, each of which forms a square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The two sublattices order at different temperatures and effective exchange couplings within the sublattices differ by an order of magnitude. This yields an inelastic neutron spectrum of the Cu$_{\rm A}$ sublattice extending up to 300 meV and a much weaker dispersion of Cu$_{\rm B}$ going up to around 20 meV. Using a single-band Hubbard model we derive an effective spin Hamiltonian. From this, we find that linear spin-wave theory gives a good description to the magnetic spectrum. In addition, a magnetic field of 10 T is found to produce effects on the Cu$_{\rm B}$ dispersion that cannot be explained by conventional spin-wave theory.

Pr-magnetism in the quasi-skutterudite compound PrFe$_2$Al$_8$

The intermetallic compound \PFA\ that possesses a three-dimensional network structure of Al polyhedra centered at the transition metal element Fe and the rare earth Pr is investigated through neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering in order to elucidate the magnetic ground state of Pr and Fe and the crystal field effects of Pr. Our neutron diffraction study confirms long-range magnetic order of Pr below $T_N $ = 4.5~K in this compound. Subsequent magnetic structure estimation reveals a magnetic propagation vector $k$ = ($\frac{1}{2}$~0~$\frac{1}{2}$) with a magnetic moment value of 2.5~$μ_\mathrm{B}$/Pr along the orthorhombic $c$-axis and evidence the lack of ordering in the Fe sublattice. The inelastic neutron scattering study reveals one crystalline electric field excitation near 19~meV at 5~K in \PFA. The energy-integrated intensity of the 19~meV excitation as a function of |$Q$| $(A^{-1})$ follows the square of the magnetic form factor of Pr$^{3+}$ thereby confirming that the inelastic excitation belongs to the Pr sublattice. The second sum rule applied to the dynamic structure factor indicates only 1.6(2)~$μ_\mathrm{B}$ evolving at the 19~meV peak compared to the 3.58~$μ_\mathrm{B}$ for free Pr$^{3+}$, indicating that the crystal field ground state is magnetic and the missing moment is associated with the resolution limited quasi-elastic line. The magnetic order occurring in Pr in \PFA\ is counter-intuitive to the symmetry-allowed crystal field level scheme, hence, is suggestive of exchange-mediated mechanisms of ordering stemming from the magnetic ground state of the crystal field levels.

Nodal superconducting gap structure in the quasi-one-dimensional Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ investigated using $μ$SR measurements

The superconducting ground state of the newly discovered superconductor Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure ($T_{\bf c}\sim$ 2.1(1) K) has been investigated using magnetization and muon-spin relaxation or rotation ($μ$SR), both zero-field (ZF) and transverse-field (TF), measurements. Our ZF $μ$SR measurements reveal the presence of spin fluctuations below 4 K and the ZF relaxation rate ($λ$) shows enhancement below $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 2.1 K, which might indicate that the superconducting state is unconventional. This observation suggests that the electrons are paired via unconventional channels such as spin fluctuations, as proposed on the basis of theoretical models. Our analysis of the TF $μ$SR results shows that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is fitted better with a nodal gap structure than an isotropic s-wave model for the superconducting gap. The observation of a nodal gap in Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ is consistent with that observed in the isostructural K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ compound through TF $μ$SR measurements. Furthermore, from our TF $μ$SR study we have estimated the magnetic penetration depth $λ_{\mathrm{L}}$$(0)$ = 954 nm, superconducting carrier density $n_s = 4.98 \times 10^{26}~ $m$^{-3}$, and carrier's effective-mass enhancement $m^*$ = 1.61m$_{e}$.

Incarnation of Majorana Fermions in Kitaev Quantum Spin Lattice

Kitaev quantum spin liquid is a topological magnetic quantum state characterized by Majorana fermions of fractionalized spin excitations, which are identical to their own antiparticles. Here, we demonstrate emergence of Majorana fermions thermally fractionalized in the Kitaev honeycomb spin lattice α-RuCl3. The specific heat data unveil the characteristic two-stage release of magnetic entropy involving localized and itinerant Majorana fermions. The inelastic neutron scattering results further corroborate these two distinct fermions by exhibiting quasielastic excitations at low energies around the Brillouin zone center and Y-shaped magnetic continuum at high energies, which are evident for the ferromagnetic Kitaev model. Our results provide an opportunity to build a unified conceptual framework of fractionalized excitations, applicable also for the quantum Hall states, superconductors, and frustrated magnets.
