Possible polarisation and spin dependent aspects of quantum gravity

We argue that quantum gravity theories that carry a Lie algebraic modification of the Poincare' and Heisenberg algebras inevitably provide inhomogeneities that may serve as seeds for cosmological structure formation. Furthermore, in this class of theories one must expect a strong polarisation and spin dependence of various quantum-gravity effects.

MiniBooNE and a (CP)^2 = -1 sterile neutrino

It has been taken as granted that the observation of two independent mass-squared differences necessarily fixes the number of underlying mass eigenstates as three, and that the addition of a sterile neutrino provides an additional mass-squared difference. The purpose of this Letter is to argue that if one considers a sterile neutrino component that belongs to the (CP)^2 = - 1 sector, then both of the stated claims are false. We also outline how the results reported here, when combined with the forthcoming MiniBooNE data and other experiments, can help settle the issue of the CP properties of the sterile neutrino; if such a component does indeed exist.

Dark matter, and its darkness

Assuming the validity of the general relativistic description of gravitation on astrophysical and cosmological length scales, we analytically infer that the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology with Einsteinian cosmological constant, and a vanishing spatial curvature constant, unambiguously requires significant amount of dark matter. This requirement is consistent with other indications for dark matter. The same spacetime symmetries that underlie the freely falling frames of Einsteinian gravity also provide symmetries, which for the spin one half representation space, furnish a novel construct that carries extremely limited interactions with respect to the terrestrial detectors made of the standard model material. Both the `luminous' and `dark' matter turn out to be residents of the same representation space but they derive their respective `luminosity' and `darkness' from either belonging to the sector with (CPT)^2 = + 1, or to the sector with (CPT)^2 = - 1.

A Reply to a Comment on "Dark matter: A phenomenological existence proof"

In astro-ph/0601489, within the framework of the Einsteinian general relativity, we made the observation that if the universe is described by a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology with Einsteinian cosmological constant then the resulting cosmology predicts a significant dark matter component in the universe. Furthermore, the phenomenologically motivated existence proof refrained from invoking the data on galactic rotational curves and gravitational lensing, but used as input the age of the universe as deciphered from the studies on globular clusters. This claim has been challenged in astro-ph/0603213. Here we show that the raised objection is invalid. It, at best, constitutes a trivial consistency check. As such, we stand by our analysis, and by our conclusions, without reservations.

Dark matter: A phenomenological existence proof

The non-Keplerian galactic rotational curves and the gravitational lensing data strongly indicate a significant dark matter component in the universe. Moreover, these data can be combined to deduce the equation of state of dark matter. Yet, the existence of dark matter has been challenged following the tradition of critical scientific spirit. In the process, the theory of general relativity itself has been questioned and various modified theories of gravitation have been proposed. Within the framework of the Einsteinian general relativity, here I make the observation that if the universe is described by a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology with Einsteinian cosmological constant then the resulting cosmology predicts a significant dark matter component in the universe. The phenomenologically motivated existence proof refrains from invoking the data on galactic rotational curves and gravitational lensing, but uses as input the age of the universe as deciphered from studies on globular clusters.

Minimal spatio-temporal extent of events, neutrinos, and the cosmological constant problem

Chryssomalakos and Okon, through a uniqueness analysis, have strengthened the Vilela Mendes suggestion that the immunity to infinitesimal perturbations in the structure constants of a physically-relevant Lie algebra should be raised to the status of a physical principle. Since the Poincare'-Heisenberg algebra does not carry the indicated immunity it is suggested that the Lie algebra for the interface of the gravitational and quantum realms (IGQR) is its stabilized form. It carries three additional parameters: a length scale pertaining to the Planck/unification scale, a second length scale associated with cosmos, and a new dimensionless constant. Here, I show that the adoption of the stabilized Poincare'-Heisenberg algebra (SPHA) for the IGQR has the immediate implication that `point particle' ceases to be a viable physical notion. It must be replaced by objects which carry a well-defined, representation space dependent, minimal spatio-temporal extent. The ensuing implications have the potential, without spoiling any of the successes of the standard model of particle physics, to resolve the cosmological constant problem while concurrently offering a first-principle hint as to why there exists a coincidence between cosmic vacuum energy density and neutrino masses. The main theses which the essay presents is the following: an extension of the present-day physics to a framework which respects SPHA should be seen as the most natural and systematic path towards gaining a deeper understanding of outstanding questions, if not providing answers to them.

Dark matter: A spin one half fermion field with mass dimension one?

We report an unexpected theoretical discovery of a spin one half matter field with mass dimension one. It is based on a complete set of eigenspinors of the charge conjugation operator. Due to its unusual properties with respect to charge conjugation and parity it belongs to a non standard Wigner class. Consequently, the theory exhibits non-locality with (CPT)^2 = - I. Its dominant interaction with known forms of matter is via Higgs, and with gravity. This aspect leads us to contemplate it as a first-principle candidate for dark matter.

Operational indistinguishabilty of doubly special relativities from special relativity

We argue that existing doubly special relativities may not be operationally distinguishable from the special relativity. In the process we point out that some of the phenomenologically motivated modifications of dispersion relations, and arrived conclusions, must be reconsidered. Finally, we reflect on the possible conceptual issues that arise in quest for a theory of spacetime with two invariant scales.

Spin half fermions with mass dimension one: theory, phenomenology, and dark matter

We provide the first details on the unexpected theoretical discovery of a spin-one-half matter field with mass dimension one. It is based upon a complete set of dual-helicity eigenspinors of the charge conjugation operator. Due to its unusual properties with respect to charge conjugation and parity, it belongs to a non-standard Wigner class. Consequently, the theory exhibits non-locality with (CPT)^2 = - I. We briefly discuss its relevance to the cosmological `horizon problem'. Because the introduced fermionic field is endowed with mass dimension one, it can carry a quartic self-interaction. Its dominant interaction with known forms of matter is via Higgs, and with gravity. This aspect leads us to contemplate the new fermion as a prime dark matter candidate. Taking this suggestion seriously we study a supernova-like explosion of a galactic-mass dark matter cloud to set limits on the mass of the new particle and present a calculation on relic abundance to constrain the relevant cross-section. The analysis favours light mass (roughly 20 MeV) and relevant cross-section of about 2 pb. Similarities and differences with the WIMP and mirror matter proposals for dark matter are enumerated. In a critique of the theory we bare a hint on non-commutative aspects of spacetime, and energy-momentum space.

A freely falling frame at the interface of gravitational and quantum realms

I briefly argue for logical necessity to incorporate, besides c, hbar, two fundamental length scales in the symmetries associated with the interface of gravitational and quantum realms. Next, in order to clear the proverbial bush, I discuss the CPT and indistinguishability issue related to recent non-linear deformations of special relativity and suggest why algebraically well-defined extensions of special relativity do not require non-linear deformations. That done, I suggest why the stable Snyder-Yang-Mendes Lie algebra should be considered as a serious candidate for the symmetries underlying freely falling frames at the interface of gravitational and quantum realms; thus echoing, and complementing, arguments recently put forward by Chryssomalakos and Okon. In the process I obtain concrete form of uncertainty relations which involve above-indicated length scales and a new dimensionless constant. I draw attention to the fact that because superconducting quantum interference devices can carry roughly 10^{23} Cooper pairs in a single quantum state, Planck-mass quantum systems already exist in the laboratory. These may be used for possible exploration of the interface of the gravitational and quantum realms.

Charge conjugation and Lense-Thirring Effect: A new Asymmetry

This essay presents a new asymmetry that arises from the interplay of charge conjugation and Lense-Thirring effect. When applied to Majorana neutrinos, the effects predicts nu_e <-> overline{nu}_e oscillations in gravitational environments with rotating sources. Parameters associated with astrophysical environments indicate that the presented effect is presently unobservable for solar neutrinos. But, it will play an important role in supernova explosions, and carries relevance for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe.

Neutrino oscillations and supernovae

In a 1996 JRO Fellowship Research Proposal (Los Alamos), the author suggested that neutrino oscillations may provide a powerful indirect energy transport mechanism to supernovae explosions. The principal aim of this addendum is to present the relevant unedited text of Section 1 of that proposal. We then briefly remind, (a) of an early suggestion of Mazurek on vacuum neutrino oscillations and their relevance to supernovae explosion, and (b) Wolfenstein's result on suppression of the effect by matter effects. We conclude that whether or not neutrino oscillations play a significant role in supernovae explosions shall depend if there are shells/regions of space in stellar collapse where matter effects play no essential role. Should such regions exist in actual astrophysical situations, the final outcome of neutrino oscillations on supernovae explosions shall depend, in part, on whether or not the LNSD signal is confirmed. Importantly, the reader is reminded that neutrino oscillations form a set of flavor-oscillation clocks and these clock suffer gravitational redshift which can be as large as 20 percent. This effect must be incorporated fully into any calculation of supernova explosion.

Special relativity with two invariant scales: Motivation, Fermions, Bosons, Locality, and Critique

We present a Master equation for description of fermions and bosons for special relativities with two invariant scales, SR2, (c and lambda_P). We introduce canonically-conjugate variables (chi^0, chi) to (epsilon, pi) of Judes-Visser. Together, they bring in a formal element of linearity and locality in an otherwise non-linear and non-local theory. Special relativities with two invariant scales provide all corrections, say, to the standard model of the high energy physics, in terms of one fundamental constant, lambda_P. It is emphasized that spacetime of special relativities with two invariant scales carries an intrinsic quantum-gravitational character. In an addenda, we also comment on the physical importance of a phase factor that the whole literature on the subject has missed and present a brief critique of SR2. In addition, we remark that the most natural and physically viable SR2 shall require momentum-space and spacetime to be non-commutative with the non-commutativity determined by the spin content and C, P, and T properties of the examined representation space. Therefore, in a physically successful SR2, the notion of spacetime is expected to be deeply intertwined with specific properties of the test particle.

A theoretical case for negative mass-square for sub-eV particles

Electroweak gauge bosons have masses of the order of 10^2 GeV, while masses of additional bosons involved in gravito-electroweak unification are expected to be still higher. These are at least eleven orders of magnitude higher than sub-eV range indications for neutrino masses. Under these circumstances we suspect that the sub-eV particles are created in a spacetime where gravitational effects of massive gauge bosons may become important. The question that we thus ask is: What is the spacetime group around a gravito-electroweak vertex? Modeling it as de-Sitter we find that sub-eV particles may carry a negative mass square of the order of - (3/8 π^3) (M_unif./M_Planck)^4 M_Planck^2. Neutrino oscillation data then hints at 30-75 TeV scale for M_unif., where M_unif. characterizes gravito-electroweak unification scale.

Particle-Antiparticle Metamorphosis of Massive Majorana Neutrinos and Gauginos

Recent results on neutrinoless double beta decay, as reported by Klapdor-Kleingrothaus et al., take us for the first time into the realm of Majorana spacetime structure. However, this structure has either been treated as an afterthought to the Dirac construct; or, when it has been attended to in its own right, its physical and mathematical content was never fully unearthed. In this Letter,we undertake to remedy the existing situation. We present a detailed formalism required for the description of the non-trivial spacetime structure underlying the "nu-nubar" metamorphosis - where "nu" generically represents a massive Majorana neutrino, or a massive gaugino.

Extended set of Majorana spinors, a new dispersion relation, and a preferred frame

We aspire to fufill Majorana's original goal of bringing full symmetry between the charged and fundamentally neutral particles. We present a description of fundamentally neutral particles without any reliance on Dirac spinors. We show that the extended set Majorana spinors (a) describe a Wigner class of fermions in which the charge conjugation and the parity operators commute, rather than anticommute, and (b) support two type of dispersion relations, the usual E= pm sqrt{p^2+m^2}, and a new E=- 2m \pm sqrt{p^2+m^2}. The latter may be preferred over the former on minimization of energy requirement and offers a natural source for observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. The ensuing physical interpretation requires existence of a preferred frame which may be identified with the cosmic neutrino background.
