Momentum distributions and reaction mechanisms for breakup of two--neutron halos

A theoretical model able to describe fragmentation reactions of three--body halo nuclei on different targets, from light to heavy, is used to compute neutron and core momentum distributions. Both Coulomb and nuclear interactions are simultaneously included. We specify the different reaction mechanisms related to various processes. The method is applied to fragmentation of $^6$He and $^{11}$Li on C and Pb. We find good agreement with the available experimental results.

Coulomb and nuclear breakup of three-body halo nuclei

We investigate dissociation reactions of loosely bound and spatially extended three-body systems. We formulate a practical method for simultaneous treatment of long-range Coulomb and short-range nuclear interactions. We use $^6$He (n+n+$α$) and $^{11}$Li (n+n+$^{9}$Li) as examples and study the two-neutron separation cross sections as functions of target and beam energy. Individual Coulomb and nuclear as well as interference contributions are also extracted.

Cross sections for Coulomb and nuclear breakup of three-body halo nuclei

All possible dissociation cross sections for the loosely bound three-body halo nuclei $^6$He (n+n+$α$) and $^{11}$Li (n+n+$^{9}$Li) are computed as functions of target and beam energy. Both Coulomb and nuclear interactions are included in the same theoretical framework. The measurements agree with the calculations for energies above 100 Mev/nucleon. The largest cross sections correspond to final states with zero or three particles for heavy and with two neutrons for light targets.

Phase equivalent potentials for three-body halos

We compare the properties of three-body systems obtained with two-body potentials with Pauli forbidden states and with the corresponding phase equivalent two-body potentials. In the first case the forbidden states are explicitly excluded in the calculation. Differences arise due to the off-shell properties of these on-shell equivalent potentials. We use the adiabatic hyperspherical method to formulate a practical prescription to exclude Pauli forbidden states in three-body calculations. Schematic as well as realistic potentials are used. Almost indistinguishable results are obtained.

Breakup Reactions of 11Li within a Three-Body Model

We use a three-body model to investigate breakup reactions of 11Li (n+n+9Li) on a light target. The interaction parameters are constrained by known properties of the two-body subsystems, the 11Li binding energy and fragmentation data. The remaining degrees of freedom are discussed. The projectile-target interactions are described by phenomenological optical potentials. The model predicts dependence on beam energy and target, differences between longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions and provides absolute values for all computed differential cross sections. We give an almost complete series of observables and compare with corresponding measurements. Remarkably good agreement is obtained. The relative neutron-9Li p-wave content is about 40%. A p-resonance, consistent with measurements at about 0.5 MeV of width about 0.4 MeV, seems to be necessary. The widths of the momentum distributions are insensitive to target and beam energy with a tendency to increase towards lower energies. The transverse momentum distributions are broader than the longitudinal due to the diffraction process. The absolute values of the cross sections follow the neutron-target cross sections and increase strongly for beam energies decreasing below 100 MeV/u.

How to observe the Efimov effect

We propose to observe the Efimov effect experimentally by applying an external electric field on atomic three-body systems. We first derive the lowest order effective two-body interaction for two spin zero atoms in the field. Then we solve the three-body problem and search for the extreme spatially extended Efimov states. We use helium trimers as an illustrative numerical example and estimate the necessary field strength to be less than 2.7 V/angstrom.

Angular Correlations in Breakup of Three-Body Halo Nuclei

We use the three-body model and the sudden approximation to compute angular correlations in high-energy fragmentation reactions of two-neutron halos on light targets. The contribution from one-neutron absorption by far dominates over that of neutron scattering. We use 6He (n+n+alpha) and 11Li (n+n+9Li) as examples and study the dependence of the predictions of this model on different physical assumptions and parameters. The structure of the atomic helium trimers: Halos and Efimov states

The Faddeev equations for the atomic helium-trimer systems are solved numerically with high accuracy both for the most sophisticated realistic potentials available and for simple phenomenological potentials. An efficient numerical procedure is described. The large-distance asymptotic behavior, crucial for weakly bound three-body systems, is described almost analytically for arbitrary potentials. The Efimov effect is especially considered. The geometric structures of the bound states are quantitatively investigated. The accuracy of the schematic models and previous computations is comparable, i.e. within 20% for the spatially extended states and within 40% for the smaller ^4He-trimer ground state.

Three-body halos. V. Computations of continuum spectra for Borromean nuclei

We solve the coordinate space Faddeev equations in the continuum. We employ hyperspherical coordinates and provide analytical expressions allowing easy computation of the effective potentials at distances much larger than the ranges of the interactions where only s-waves in the different Jacobi coordinates couple. Realistic computations are carried out for the Borromean halo nuclei 6He (n+n+α) for Jπ= 0+-, 1+-, 2+- and 11Li (n+n+9Li) for (1/2)+-, (3/2)+-, (5/2)+-. Ground state properties, strength functions, Coulomb dissociation cross sections, phase shifts, complex S-matrix poles are computed and compared to available experimental data. We find enhancements of the strength functions at low energies and a number of low-lying S-matrix poles.

Two-neutron removal reactions of 6He treated as a three-body halo

We formulate a method to compute breakup processes of three-body halo systems reacting with a target. The reaction between one of the particles and the target as well as the corresponding pairwise final state interactions are carefully treated. Both absorption and diffraction processes are included. Detailed differential and total cross sections are calculated for two-neutron (2n) removal from 6He by fragmentation on 12C. Effects due to the core shadowing are taken into account. Good agreement with available experimental data is obtained.

Comment on "New modes of halo excitations in the 6He nucleus"

We try to explain the differences in the 6He dipole strength function in refs. [1] and [2]. We perform the full basis calculation of the strength function with the same renormalized interaction as in [1] and show that the size of the basis, needed for converged calculations of the 6He continuum spectrum, is much larger than that for the discrete spectrum. The renormalized interaction of [1] therefore cannot be used for the continuum spectrum calculations with the same basis as for the ground state.

Computations of Three-Body Continuum Spectra

We formulate a method to solve the coordinate space Faddeev equations for positive energies. The method employs hyperspherical coordinates and analytical expressions for the effective potentials at large distances. Realistic computations of the parameters of the resonances and the strength functions are carried out for the Borromean halo nucleus 6He (n+n+alpha) for J = 0+, 0-, 1+, 1-, 2+,2-. The Continuum Structure of the Borromean Halo Nucleus 11Li

We solve the Faddeev equations for 11Li (n+n+9Li) using hyperspherical coordinates and analytical expressions for distances much larger than the effective ranges of the interactions. The lowest resonances are found at 0.65 MeV (1/2+, 3/2+, 5/2+) and 0.89 MeV (3/2+, 3/2-) with widths of about 0.35 MeV. A number of higher-lying broader resonances are also obtained and related to the Efimov effect. The dipole strength function and the Coulomb dissociation cross section are also calculated. Three-Body Halos in Two Dimensions

A method to study weakly bound three-body quantum systems in two dimensions is formulated in coordinate space for short-range potentials. Occurrences of spatially extended structures (halos) are investigated. Borromean systems are shown to exist in two dimensions for a certain class of potentials. An extensive numerical investigation shows that a weakly bound two-body state gives rise to two weakly bound three-body states, a reminiscence of the Efimov effect in three dimensions. The properties of these two states in the weak binding limit turn out to be universal. PACS number(s): 03.65.Ge, 21.45.+v, 31.15.Ja, 02.60Nm

The simplest ``strange'' three-body halo

The recently developed method to solve the Faddeev equations in coordinate space is used to study the weakly bound halo nucleus, the hypertriton (Lambda + n + p). The long distances are treated carefully to achieve convergence and high accuracy. We use several sets of two-body interactions which reproduce the deuteron properties and provide the low-energy Lambda-nucleon scattering data close to that of two of Nijmegen potentials. We show that the details of the potentials are unimportant unless the accuracy of the hypertriton binding energy is required to be better than 50 keV. We find that the most significant parameter of the Lambda-nucleon interaction, the singlet s-wave scattering length, must be within 10% of 1.85 fm, when the Lambda-separation energy from the deuteron is about 130 keV. Other details of the Lambda-nucleon interaction are less important for the hypertriton structure. The scattering length and effective range are computed for scattering of a Lambda-particle on a deuteron. The folding model reducing the three-body problem to a two-body problem is investigated in this context and found to be inadequate.

The Three-Body Continuum Coulomb Problem and the 3$α$ Structure of $^{12}$C

We introduce an approach, based on the coordinate space Faddeev equations, to solve the quantum mechanical three-body Coulomb problem in the continuum. We apply the approach to compute measured properties of the first two $0^+$ levels in $^{12}$C, including the width of the excited level, in a 3$α$-particle model. We use the two-body interaction which reproduces the low energy $α$-$α$ scattering data and add a three-body force to account for the compound state admixture.

New Observables in Break-up Reactions of Three-body Halos

Momentum distributions of particles from fast three-body halo fragmentation reactions with polarized beams and outgoing fragments are analyzed by use of the sudden approximation. The final state interaction between the two non-disturbed particles is considered. We first give a general and detailed description of the method. We introduce observable quantities that emphasize the two-body correlations in the initial three-body structure as well as in the final two-body system. Using neutron removal from 11Li as an example we investigate the dependence of the polarization observables on the properties of the low-lying resonances and virtual states of the 10Li subsystem. These observables are very sensitive to the l > 0-waves in the wave functions, and they provide detailed information on the resonance structure of the neutron-core subsystem.

Square-well solution to the three-body problem

The angular part of the Faddeev equations is solved analytically for s-states for two-body square-well potentials. The results are, still analytically, generalized to arbitrary short-range potentials for both small and large distances. We consider systems with three identical bosons, three non-identical particles and two identical spin-1/2 fermions plus a third particle with arbitrary spin. The angular wave functions are in general linear combinations of trigonometric and exponential functions. The Efimov conditions are obtained at large distances. General properties and applications to arbitrary potentials are discussed. Gaussian potentials are used for illustrations. The results are useful for numerical calculations, where for example large distances can be treated analytically and matched to the numerical solutions at smaller distances. The saving is substantial.
