On the role of electron-phonon interaction in the resistance anisotropy of two-dimensional electrons in GaAs heterostructures

A contribution of the electron-phonon interaction into the energy of a unidirectional charge ordered state (stripe phase) of two-dimensional electrons in GaAs heterostructures is analyzed. The dependence of the energy on the direction of the electron density modulation is calculated. It is shown that in electrons layers situated close to the (001) surface the interference between the piezoelectric and the deformation potential interaction causes a preferential orientation of the stripes along the [110] axis.

Piezoelectric mechanism of orientation of a bilayer Wigner crystal in a GaAs matrix

A mechanism for orientation of bilayer classical Wigner crystals in a piezoelectric medium is considered. For the GaAs system the piezoelectric correction to the electrostatic interaction between electrons is calculated. It is shown that taking into account the correction due to the piezoelectric effect leads to a dependence of the total energy of the electron crystal on its orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the surrounding matrix. A generalization of Ewald's method is obtained for calculating the anisotropic interaction between electrons in a Wigner crystal. The method is used to calculate the energy of bilayer Wigner crystals in electron layers parallel to the crystallographic planes (001), (0-11), and (111) as a function of their orientation and the distance between layers, and the energetically most favorable orientation for all types of electron lattices in a bilayer system is found. It is shown that phase transitions between structures with different lattice symmetry in a Wigner crystal can be accompanied by a change of its orientation.

Collective excitations of a two-dimensional interacting Bose gas in anti-trap and linear external potentials

We present a method of finding approximate analytical solutions for the spectra and eigenvectors of collective modes in a two-dimensional system of interacting bosons subjected to a linear external potential or the potential of a special form $u(x,y)=μ-u \cosh^2 x/l$, where $μ$ is the chemical potential. The eigenvalue problem is solved analytically for an artificial model allowing the unbounded density of the particles. The spectra of collective modes are calculated numerically for the stripe, the rare density valley and the edge geometry and compared with the analytical results. It is shown that the energies of the modes localized at the rare density region and at the edge are well approximated by the analytical expressions. We discuss Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the systems under investigations at $T\ne 0$ and find that in case of a finite number of the particles the regime of BEC can be realized, whereas the condensate disappears in the thermodynamic limit.

Piezoelectric mechanism of orientation of stripe structures in two-dimensional electron systems

A piezoelectric mechanism of orientation of stripes in two-dimensional quantum Hall systems in GaAs heterostructures is considered. The anisotropy of the elastic moduli and the boundary of the sample are taken into account. It is found that in the average the stripes line up with the [110] axis. In double layer systems the wave vector of the stripe structure rotates from the [110] to [100] axis if the period of density modulation becomes large than the interlayer distance. From the experimental point of view it means that in double layer systems anisotropic part of resistivity changes its sign under variation of the external magnetic field.

Interaction of nonuniform elastic waves with two-dimensional electrons in AlGaAs-GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructures

An interaction of a double layer electron system realized in an AlGaAs-GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure with nonuniform elastic modes localized in the GaAs layer is considered. The dependence of the coupling constant on the ratio between the thickness of the GaAs layer and the wavelength is calculated for the wave vector directed along the [110] axis, the displacement vector lying in the (1-10) plane and the interface boundaries parallel to the (001) plane. It is shown, that the coupling constant reaches the maximal value at the wavelength which is of order of the thickness of the GaAs layer. The renormalization of the velocity of the elastic modes is found for the case, when the electron system is in the fractional quantum Hall regime. It is shown, that for certain modes the dependence of the velocity shift on the wave vector is modified qualitatively under a transition of the electron system to the state, which corresponds to the Halperin wave function.

Interaction of quantum Hall systems with waveguide elastic modes

An interaction of non-uniform plane elastic modes of the waveguide type with monolayer and double-layer quantum Hall systems is considered. It is shown, that unlike the case of the surface acoustic wave propagation, the restriction on maximal values of the wave vectors for which the velocity shift can be observed experimentally does not take place for the waveguide modes. In case of study of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states the effect can be used for measuring a dependence of the effective magnetic length on the filling factor and for observing phase transitions in double-layer system under the interlayer distance variation

Screening of electrostatic potential in a composite fermion system

Screening of the electric field of a test charge by monolayer and double-layer composite fermion systems is considered. It is shown that the electric field of the test charge is partly screened at distances much large then the magnetic length. The value of screening as a function of the distance depends considerably on the filling factor. The effect of variation of the value of screening in the double-layer system upon a transition to a state described by the Halperin wave function is determined.
