Electrically driven Rabi dynamics of magnetic-field-induced corner states in a two-dimensional topological insulator

We study coherent electric manipulation of magnetic-field-induced localized states at a double kink of a helical edge in a HgTe/CdHgTe quantum well. An in-plane magnetic field opens a gap in the one-dimensional edge spectrum, while changes in the edge orientation generate localized in-gap states at the kinks. We show that, for suitable geometry and magnetic-field direction, two such states form an effective lithographically defined two-level subsystem. Using an edge-state model that includes both the localized levels and the fully propagating 1D edge states outside the magnetic-field-induced gap, we calculate the electric-dipole matrix elements and solve the time-dependent problem under resonant driving. The resulting dynamics exhibits Rabi oscillations with linear frequencies of $20$--$40$~GHz for realistic parameters. We find that the propagating 1D edge states provide a leakage channel whose strength is strongly controlled by the driving amplitude: reducing the electric field suppresses leakage below the percent level while preserving GHz-scale coherent oscillations. These results establish a route from magnetic-field-induced corner-state physics to electrically driven two-level dynamics in a realistic two-dimensional topological-insulator edge geometry.

Spin flip locking by the tunneling and relaxation in a driven double quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling

Coupled spin evolution and tunneling together with the relaxation and decoherence effects are studied for the double quantum dot formed in a semiconductor nanowire and driven by the periodic electric field. Such system represents a model of the spin and charge qubits interacting via the strong spin-orbit coupling. It is found that at certain regimes the combination of fast relaxation in the coordinate channel with the slower relaxation in the spin channel leads to the promising combination of fast spin manipulation and slow spin relaxation, locking the flipped spin in an excited state in one of the dots for a sufficiently long time. The predicted effect is maintained for a wide range of the relaxation times and the driving amplitude both for the coordinate and the spin channels and is also observed on higher subharmonic which requires lower driving frequencies.

Controllable single spin evolution at sub-harmonics of electric dipole spin resonance enhanced by four-level Landau-Zener-St{ü}ckelberg-Majorana interference

Sub-harmonics of electric dipole spin resonance (EDSR) mediated by Landau-Zener-St{ü}ckelberg-Majorana (LZSM) tunneling transitions are studied numerically and analytically in a Zeeman-split four level system with strong spin-orbit coupling that can be realized, for example, in a GaAs-based double quantum dot in a single-hole regime. The spin qubit is formed in one of the dots and the second dot is used as an auxiliary element to enhance functionality of the spin qubit. In particular, it is found that the spin rotation rate can be essentially enhanced due to the tunnel coupling with the auxiliary dot on both the main EDSR frequency and at its high sub-harmonics allowing the coherent spin $π$-rotations on a 10-ns time scale. Spin manipulation on high sub-harmonics is promising for new time-efficient schemes of the spin control and readout in qubit devices operating at high magnetic fields where the main harmonic is inaccessible due to hardware limitations.

Single spin Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana interferometry of Zeeman-split states with strong spin-orbit interaction in a double quantum dot

Single spin state evolution induced by the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) interference in a Zeeman-spit four level system in a periodically driven double quantum dot is studied theoretically by the Floquet stroboscopic method. An interplay between spin-conserving and spin-flip tunneling processes with the Electric Dipole Spin Resonance (EDSR) that is induced in an individual dot and enhanced by the LZSM multiple level crossings with the neighboring quantum dot is investigated as a function of the microwave (MW) frequency, driving amplitude, interdot detuning, and magnetic field. A number of special points in the parameter space are identified, out of which where all the three features are merged. Under this triple-crossing resonance condition the interdot tunneling is combined with a fast spin evolution in each dot at the EDSR frequency. Harmonics of the EDSR are revealed in the spin-dependent tunneling maps versus variable magnetic field and MW frequency. The results are applicable for both electron and hole systems with strong spin-orbit interaction and may be useful for developing new time-efficient schemes of the spin control and readout in qubit devices.

Formation of bound states from the edge states of 2D topological insulator by macroscopic magnetic barriers

A model of bound state formation from the delocalized edge states of 2D topological insulator is derived by considering the effects of magnetic barriers attached to the edge of the HgTe/CdTe quantum well. The resulting structure has a spatial form of 1D quantum dot with variable number of bound states depending on barrier parameters. The spatial profile of exchange interaction between the edge states and barriers is derived from the interaction with single impurity magnetic moment and is generalized for the barrier bulk structure formed by ensemble of impurities. The resulting Hamiltonian is studied as a function of barrier parameters including their strength and orientation of the magnetic moments. It is shown that for parallel magnetization of two barriers at least two discrete levels are formed regardless of the barrier strength. For antiparallel magnetization at least a single bound state is formed for any strength of the barriers. Our results may help in design of novel types of quantum dots based on topological insulators.

Quasistationary states in a quantum dot formed at the edge of a topological insulator by magnetic barriers with finite transparency

A model of quasistationary states is constructed for the one-dimensional edge states propagating along the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator based on HgTe/CdTe quantum well in the presence of magnetic barriers with finite transparency. The lifetimes of these quasistationary states are found analytically and numerically via different approaches including the solution of the stationary Schroedinger equation with complex energy and the solution of the transmission problem for a double barrier structure. The results can serve as a guide for determining the parameters of magnetic barriers creating the quantum dots where the lifetimes for the broadened discrete levels are long enough for manipulation with their occupation numbers by external fields.

Spin rotation by resonant electric field in few-level quantum dots: Floquet dynamics and tunneling

We study electric dipole spin resonance caused by sub-terahertz (THz) radiation in a multilevel finite-size quantum dot formed in a nanowire focusing on the range of driving electric fields amplitudes where a strong interplay between the Rabi spin oscillations and tunneling from the dot to continuum states can occur. A strong effect of the tunneling on the spin evolution in this regime occurs due to formation of mixed spin states. As a result, the tunneling strongly limits possible spin manipulations time. We demonstrate a backaction of the spin dynamics on the tunneling and position of the electron. The analysis of the efficiency of the spin manipulation in terms of the system energy shows that tunneling decreases this efficiency. Fourier spectra of the time-dependent expectation value of the electron position show a strong effect of the spin-orbit coupling on their low-frequency components. This results can be applied to operational properties of spin-based nanodevices and extending the range of possible spin resonance frequencies to the THz domain.

Connecting the numerical and analytical ionization times for quantum dots in semiconductor wires driven by alternating field

Recent numerical results for ionization of quantum dots by periodic electric field during the electric dipole spin resonance are compared with known analytical approaches. It is found that in finite-length quantum wires the numerical ionization rate is slower than the analytical one, especially for low driving field when the confinement potential strongly affects the dynamics. Still, the analytically predicted ionization times are in satisfactory correspondence with mean energy threshold times when the energy crosses the border between localized and continuum states.

Electric dipole spin resonance at shallow donors in quantum wires

Electric dipole spin resonance is studied theoretically at a shallow donor formed in a nanowire with spin-orbit coupling in a magnetic field. Such system may represent a donor-based qubit. The single discrete energy level of the donor is accompanied by the set of continuum states, which provide a non-trivial interplay for the picture of electric dipole spin resonance driven by an external monochromatic field. Strongly nonlinear dependencies of spin flip time as well as of the coordinate mean values on the electric field amplitude are observed, demonstrating the significance of coupling to the continuum for spin-based qubits manipulation in nanostructures.

Regular and irregular dynamics of Dirac-Weyl wavepackets in a mesoscopic quantum dot at the edge of topological insulator

The dynamics of Dirac-Weyl spin-polarized wavepackets driven by periodic electric field is considered for the electrons in a mesoscopic quantum dot formed at the edge of two-dimensional HgTe/CdTe topological insulator with Dirac-Weyl massless energy spectra, where the motion of carriers is less sensitive to disorder and impurity potentials. It was observed that the interplay of strongly coupled spin and charge degrees of freedom creates the regimes of irregular dynamics both in coordinate and spin channels. The border between the regular and irregular regimes determined by the strength and frequency of the driving field is found analytically within the quasiclassical approach by means of the Ince-Strutt diagram for Mathieu equation, and is supported by full quantum mechanical simulations of the driven dynamics. The investigation of quasienergy spectrum by Floquet approach reveals the presence of non-Poissonian level statistics which indicates the possibility of chaotic quantum dynamics and corresponds to the areas of parameters for irregular regimes within the quasiclassical approach. We found that the influence of weak disorder leads to partial suppression of the dynamical chaos. Our findings are of interest both for progress in a fundamental field of quantum chaotic dynamics and for further experimental and technological applications of spin-dependent phenomena in nanostructures based on topological insulators.

Shaped electric fields for fast optimal manipulation of electron spin and position in a double quantum dot

We use quantum optimal control theory algorithms to design external electric fields that drive the coupled spin and orbital dynamics of an electron in a double quantum dot, subject to the spin-orbit interaction and Zeeman magnetic fields. We obtain time-profiles of multi-frequency electric pulses which increase the rate of spin-flip transitions by several orders of magnitude in comparison with monochromatic fields, where the spin Rabi oscillations were predicted to be very slow. This precise, with the accuracy higher than $10^{-4}$, and fast, at the timescale of the order of 0.1 ns, simultaneous control of the electron spin orientation and position is achieved while keeping the electron in the four lowest tunneling- and Zeeman-split levels through the duration of the pulse, facilitating high fidelity and suggesting useful applications in spintronics and quantum information devices.

Edge states and topological properties of electrons on the bismuth on silicon surface with giant spin-orbit coupling

We derive a model of localized edge states in the finite width strip for two-dimensional electron gas formed in the hybrid system of bismuth monolayer deposited on the silicon interface and described by the nearly-free electron model with giant spin-orbit splitting. The edge states have the energy dispersion in the bulk energy gap with the Dirac-like linear dependence on the quasimomentum and the spin polarization coupled to the direction of propagation, demonstrating the properties of topological insulator. The topological stability of edge states is confirmed by the calculations of the $Z_2$ invariant taken from the structure of the Pfaffian for the time reversal operator for the filled bulk bands in the surface Brillouin zone which is shown to have a stable number of zeros with the variations of material parameters. The proposed properties of the edge states may support future advances in experimental and technological applications of this new material in nanoelectronics and spintronics.

Spin Chaos Manifestation in a Driven Quantum Billiard with Spin-Orbit Coupling

The coupling of orbital and spin degrees of freedom is the source of many interesting phenomena. Here, we study the electron dynamics in a quantum billiard --a mesoscopic rectangular quantum dot-- with spin-orbit coupling driven by a periodic electric field. We find that both the spatial and temporal profiles of the observables demonstrate the transition to chaotic dynamics with qualitative modifications of the power spectra and patterns of probability and spin density. The time dependence of the wavefunctions and spin density distributions indicates spin-charge separation {seen in the decay of the spin-charge density correlators}. This new spin chaos effect can be experimentally verified leading to a better understanding of the interplay between spin and spatial degrees of freedom, relevant to fundamental and applied quantum physics.

Spin dynamics in a strongly driven system: very slow Rabi oscillations

We consider joint effects of tunneling and spin-orbit coupling on driven by electric field spin dynamics in a double quantum dot with a multi-level resonance scenario. We demonstrate that tunneling plays the crucial role in the formation of the Rabi-like spin-flip transitions. In contrast to the linear behavior for weak electric fields, the spin flip rate becomes much smaller than expected for the two-level model and shows oscillating dependence on the driving field amplitude in stronger fields. In addition, the full spin flip is very difficult to achieve in a multi-level resonant system. These two effects have a similarity with the Zeno effect of slowing down the dynamics of an observable by its measurement. As a result, spin manipulation by electric field becomes much less efficient than expected.

Quantum states and linear response in dc and electromagnetic fields for charge current and spin polarization of electrons at Bi/Si interface with giant spin-orbit coupling

An expansion of the nearly free-electron model constructed by Frantzeskakis, Pons and Grioni [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 82}, 085440 (2010)] describing quantum states at Bi/Si(111) interface with giant spin-orbit coupling is developed and applied for the band structure and spin polarization calculation, as well as for the linear response analysis for charge current and induced spin caused by dc field and by electromagnetic radiation. It is found that the large spin-orbit coupling in this system may allow resolving the spin-dependent properties even at room temperature and at realistic collision rate. The geometry of the atomic lattice combined with spin-orbit coupling leads to an anisotropic response both for current and spin components related to the orientation of the external field. The in-plane dc electric field produces only the in-plane components of spin in the sample while both the in-plane and out-of-plane spin components can be excited by normally propagating electromagnetic wave with different polarizations.

Terahertz radiation-induced conductivity, Kerr and Faraday angles, and spin textures in a two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling subjected to a high magnetic field and periodic potential

The terahertz radiation-induced conductivity and dielectric polarization tensors as well as the Faraday and Kerr rotation angles and the non-equilibrium spin textures are studied for two-dimensional electron gas with strong spin-orbit coupling subjected to high magnetic field and to tunable periodic potential of a two-dimensional gated superlattice. It is found that both real and imaginary parts of the frequency-dependent induced conductivity approach maximum values with sharp and detectable peaks at frequencies corresponding to the inter-subband transitions between spin-split magnetic subbands. The observed properties of the conductivity tensor frequency dependence are applied for the description of the Kerr and Faraday rotation angles which can be used as another experimental tool for describing the electron gas in periodic structures with significant spin-orbit coupling. The formation of radiation-induced spin textures is predicted having both in-plane and out-of-plane components with space distribution scale comparable to the superlattice cell size which can be observed experimentally.

Pulse-pumped double quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling

We consider the full driven quantum dynamics of a qubit realized as spin of electron in a one-dimensional double quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling. The driving perturbation is taken in the form of a single half-period pulse of electric field. Spin-orbit coupling leads to a nontrivial evolution in the spin and charge densities making the dynamics in both quantities irregular. As a result, the charge density distribution becomes strongly spin-dependent. The transition from the field-induced tunneling to the strong coupling regime is clearly seen in the charge and spin channels. These results can be important for the understanding of the techniques for the spin manipulation in nanostructures.

Nonlinear Spin-Charge Dynamics in a Driven Double Quantum Dot

The coupled nonlinear coordinate and spin dynamics of an electron in a double quantum dot with spin-orbit interaction is studied semiclassically. The system is driven by an electric field with the frequency matching the orbital or the Zeeman resonance in magnetic field. Calculated evolution of the spin state is crucially sensitive to the irregularities in the spatial motion and the geometry of the host nanostructure. The resulting spin-flip Rabi frequency has an unusual dependence on the field amplitude, demonstrating approach to the chaotic spin motion. In turn, the orbital dynamics depends strongly on the spin evolution due to the spin-dependent term in the electron velocity.
